(CNN) Fifty migrants are believed to have died after they and others were found in sweltering conditions in a semitruck in San Antonio, a federal law enforcement official said Tuesday, in a scene the mayor called a "horrific human tragedy."
The death toll, which the city's fire chief set Monday at 46, includes migrants believed to be mostly from Mexico, as well as Guatemala & Honduras. Their discovery Monday comes as US federal authorities have launched an "unprecedented" operation to disrupt human smuggling networks amid an influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border.
"An alleged human smuggling event" was alerted by San Antonio police to the US Department of Homeland Security's investigation unit, which is leading the probe, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson said Monday. The incident appears to be among the most deadly in recent years for migrants near the southern border.
3 people are in police custody, though their connection to the situation is unclear.
Authorities were alerted to the scene just before 6 p.m., when a worker in a nearby building heard a cry for help. The worker found a trailer with doors partially opened & saw people deceased inside.
48 people died on the scene & 2 died at hospitals, the federal law enforcement official told CNN on Tuesday, noting the toll is preliminary.
16 people -- 12 adults & 4 children -- were taken alive & conscious to medical facilities.
Patients were hot to the touch & suffering from heat stroke & exhaustion. There was no sign of water in the refrigerated semitractor-trailer & no visible working air conditioning unit.

MOSCOW (AP) — Shackled & looking wary, WNBA star Brittney Griner was ordered to stand trial Friday by a court near Moscow on cannabis possession charges, about 4 1/2 months after her arrest at an airport while returning to play for a Russian team.
The Phoenix Mercury center & 2-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist also was ordered to remain in custody for the duration of her criminal trial. Griner could face 10 years in prison if convicted on charges of large-scale transportation of drugs. Fewer than 1% of defendants in Russian criminal cases are acquitted & unlike in the U.S., acquittals can be overturned.
At Monday’s closed-door preliminary hearing at the court in the Moscow suburb of Khimki, Griner’s detention was extended for another six months.
Her detention & trial come at an extraordinarily low point in Moscow-Washington relations. She was arrested at Sheremetyevo Airport less than a week before Russia sent troops into Ukraine, which aggravated already-high tensions with sweeping sanctions by the U.S. and Russia’s denunciation of U.S. weapon supplies to Ukraine.
Amid the tensions, Griner’s supporters had taken a low profile in hopes of a quiet resolution, until May, when the State Department reclassified her as wrongfully detained & shifted oversight of her case to its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs — effectively the U.S. government’s chief negotiator.
Griner’s wife, Cherelle, urged President Joe Biden in May to secure her release, calling her “a political pawn.”
Her supporters have encouraged a prisoner swap like the one in April that brought home Marine veteran Trevor Reed in exchange for a Russian pilot convicted of drug trafficking conspiracy.
Russian news media have repeatedly raised speculation that she could be swapped for Russian arms trader Viktor Bout, nicknamed “The Merchant of Death,” who is serving a 25-year sentence on conviction of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens & providing aid to a terrorist organization.
Russia has agitated for Bout’s release for years. But the discrepancy between Griner’s case — she allegedly was found in possession of vape cartridges containing cannabis oil & Bout’s global dealings in deadly weapons could make such a swap unpalatable to the U.S.
Others have suggested that she could be traded in tandem with Paul Whelan, a former Marine and security director serving a 16-year sentence on an espionage conviction that the U.S. has repeatedly described as a set-up.

While YNW Melly is currently in jail awaiting trial for the 2019 alleged fatal shooting of longtime friends Anthony Williams aka YNW Sakchaser,21, and Christopher Thomas Jr. aka YNW Juvy,19, The 23 year-old Florida rapper is also being accused of other misdeeds.
No Jumper's Instagram page posted a document on Sunday, June 26, detailing additional allegations, including prosecutor's claims that the 23-year old, born Jamell Maurice Demons, authorized a hit on his own mother.
Melly quickly responded.
“LIES. FALSE AGENDA. INNOCENT," his team wrote on his Instagram story.
Melly’s brother YNW BSlime also reacted on IG. “This is pure desperation,” he said with the cap emoji.
The "Murder on My Mind" rapper faces two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Juvy and Sakchaser. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty if he's convicted.
YNW Bortlen is a co-defendant in the case. Prosecutors claim he and Melly staged the shootings to look like a drive-by.

A father attacked his son's accused killer in a Cincinnati courtroom on Thursday.
Antonio Hughes lunged at defendant Desean Brown and punched him repeatedly. Officers subdued Hughes, but he attacked again once he was on his feet.
He was removed from court, charged with contempt, and ordered to serve seven days in jail.
Hughes was the father of 3-year-old Nylo Lattimore.
Prosecutors say in 2020 Brown murdered Nylo's mother, Nyteisha and put Nylo into the Ohio River while he was still alive. The boy's body was never found.
Nyteisha Lattimore was Brown's girlfriend at the time.
Brown faces charges including two counts of murder.

The arrival of the compact disc nearly killed off record albums, with vinyl pressing machines sold, scrapped and dismantled by major record labels.
Four decades later, with resuscitated record album sales producing double-digit annual growth, manufacturers are rapidly rebuilding an industry to keep pace with sales that reached $1 billion last year.
Dozens of record-pressing factories have been built to try to meet demand in North America — and it’s still not enough.
The industry “has found a new gear, and is accelerating at a new pace,” said Mark Michaels, CEO and chairman of United Record Pressing, the nation’s largest record producer, in Nashville, Tennessee.
Demand for vinyl records has been growing in double-digits for more than a decade and mass merchandisers like Target were bolstering their selection of albums just as the pandemic provided a surprising jolt. With music tours canceled, and people stuck at home, music lovers began snapping up record albums at an even faster pace.
Record album sales revenue grew a whopping 61% in 2021 — and reached $1 billion for the first time since the 1980s — far outpacing growth rates for paid music subscriptions and streaming services like Spotify and Pandora, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
Record albums nearly spun into oblivion with sales overtaken by cassettes before the compact discs brushed both aside. Then came digital downloads and online piracy, Apple iPods and 99-cent downloads. Streaming services are now ubiquitous.
But nostalgic baby boomers who missed thumbing through record albums in their local record stores helped to fuel a vinyl resurgence that started about 15 years ago.

COLOMA, Mich. (WNDU) - A home health nurse is facing murder and drug charges after police claim she’s responsible for the death of a 3-year-old in Coloma Township.
Coloma police responded to 6209 Brecht Road around 2:30 AM on Monday.
That’s where they found the parents of an unresponsive 3-year-old performing life-saving measures on their child who was missing their breathing tube & already dealing with several medical conditions.
Police also found the woman hired to monitor the child that night in no state to help out.
“Through an investigation, the officers found out that was the registered nurse that was supposed to care for the child throughout the night. After the investigation was completed, we determined that she was high on methamphetamines & should not have been in care of that child,” said Police Chief Wes Smigielski.
That nurse is 42-year-old Judith Sobol who now faces a charge of second-degree murder & possession of meth.
She not only had meth on her person when police arrived at the scene, but she also admitted to using it.
According to the probable cause document, Sobol told police she shot up meth the same day she was scheduled to care for the victim. She also admitted to shooting up meth four days straight that same week before heading to work.
The report says she admitted she was “not in the right state of mind to be at work & should have never come to work at all.”
Police found a small container in Sobol’s purse with meth & 2 pipes inside.
Sobol is being held on a $500,000 bond at the Berrien County Jail.
Her next hearing is set for June 29th.

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) - A Paulding County mother has been arrested after two young children died & several others were injured in a house fire Friday night.
A neighbor called 911 just before 9:30 p.m. Friday after seeing smoke and flames billowing out of the windows of a home located on Woodwind Drive.
Police said 7 children were inside the home when the fire initially started.
When firefighters went inside the home, they discovered 2 young children unresponsive. Police said an infant & another child in the age range of 3-5 years old were found with burns at the top of the stairs inside the home.
A third child in the age range of 5-6 years old was flown to Grady Hospital with 75% burns. A fourth child in the age range of 7-8 years old was taken to Wellstar Cobb Hospital.
Police said 3 other kids between the ages of 14 & 16 years old jumped out of a second-floor window. One child suffered an ankle injury & the other 2 were not injured.
The mother of the children was arrested after sheriff deputies found her in the backyard of the home uninjured. Her name has not been released yet.
The incident is under investigation.

TAMPA, Fla. (Fox13) - A suspect accused of killing a man in his 70s outside a Tampa convenience store early Friday morning has been arrested.
According to the Tampa Police Department, officers were called to the 7-Eleven located at 4943 E. Busch Blvd. around 1:20 a.m. for reports of a person stomping on an unconscious man.
Once on scene, police found the victim unresponsive on the ground. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
After reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses, detectives say they identified Taron Criner, 39, as the suspect.
Shortly after 7 a.m. TPD says officers saw Criner, who appeared to be wearing the same clothing as seen in the surveillance video, walking near the roadway of E. Busch Blvd in front of the 7-Eleven. His clothing also appeared to have blood spatter on it, according to TPD.
Criner was positively identified and arrested for murder.

Prosecutors want Nicki Minaj’s husband to do serious jail time -- not home confinement -- for failing to register as a sex offender in California ... TMZ Hip Hop has learned.
According to new legal docs, federal prosecutors don't think 6 months behind bars followed by supervised release is sufficient punishment for Kenneth Petty, who pled guilty to the offense. They specifically note any home confinement ordered as part of his supervised release would be spent in a huge Calabasas home where he & Nicki live.
The feds point out it's in a "gated affluent community" & includes a pool, Nicki’s music studio & their beautifully landscaped backyard -- amenities not in line with their idea of crime & punishment.
In fact, the U.S. Attorney's Office seems to think that lap of luxury is what led Petty down the wrong path. In the docs, prosecutors say Petty kept up with his sex offender registry paperwork for nearly 20 years ... until he met Nicki in 2019 & moved to Cali. As they describe it, "Defendant began dating his wife, quit his job, moved to Los Angeles & adopted an affluent lifestyle."
Petty told the court he didn't know the specific requirements to register upon leaving NY state, but prosecutors say he was well aware of the rules after getting annual warnings for 2 decades. As we've reported ... Petty had to register as a sex offender after a 1995 attempted rape conviction in NY.
Now, federal prosecutors in CA are recommending he serve 15 months of prison time, 5 years supervised release & pay $55K in retribution. The judge will have final say when sentencing goes down July 6.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Friday’s outcome is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.
The decision, unthinkable just a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by an emboldened right side of the court that has been fortified by 3 appointees of former President Donald Trump.
The ruling came more than a month after the stunning leak of a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito indicating the court was prepared to take this momentous step.
It puts the court at odds with a majority of Americans who favored preserving Roe, according to opinion polls.
Alito, in the final opinion issued Friday, wrote that Roe & Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the 1992 decision that reaffirmed the right to abortion, were wrong the day they were decided & must be overturned.
“We therefore hold that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Roe & Casey must be overruled & the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives,” Alito wrote.
Authority to regulate abortion rests with the political branches, not the courts, Alito wrote.
Joining Alito were Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh & Amy Coney Barrett. The latter three justices are Trump appointees. Thomas first voted to overrule Roe 30 years ago.
Chief Justice John Roberts would have stopped short of ending the abortion right, noting that he would have upheld the Mississippi law at the heart of the case, a ban on abortion after 15 weeks & said no more.
Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor & Elena Kagan — the diminished liberal wing of the court — were in dissent.
