A New York jury on Tuesday found former President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s, but not liable for her alleged rape.

The jury awarded her $5 million in damages for her battery & defamation claims.

Asked on their verdict sheet if Carroll, 79, had proven “by a preponderance of the evidence” that “Mr. Trump raped Ms. Carroll,” the 9-person jury checked the box that said “no.” Asked if Carroll had proven “by a preponderance of the evidence” that “Mr. Trump sexually abused Ms. Carroll,” the jury checked the box that said “yes.” Both allegations were elements of Carroll’s battery claim.

The 6 men & 3 women also found Trump had defamed her by calling her claims a “hoax” and “a con job.”

Carroll sued Trump accusing him of battery & defamation in Manhattan federal court last year, alleging he raped her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman department store near his Fifth Avenue home in 1995 or 1996.

Trump, first as president & then as a private citizen, called her account a fiction that she concocted to boost book sales & has said the writer is “not my type.” He did not testify in the case, but portions of his videotaped deposition from October were played for the jury.

The verdict was required to be unanimous.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has been sued by 4 more women who accuse him of sexual assault & harassment.

The lawsuits were filed Thursday night, hours after the NFL said it was investigating earlier allegations by 3 massage therapists who said the quarterback sexually assaulted them during massages.

The claims in the 4 new suits, which were filed in a Harris County state district court, mirror those in the 3 earlier cases. Each woman who sued Thursday worked in a spa or giving massages & claims that Watson exposed himself, touched them with his penis or kissed them against their will.

None of the 7 women, who have sued separately but are all represented by Houston lawyer Tony Buzbee, are identified by name in the lawsuits. They are each seeking compensatory & punitive damages, as well as court costs.

Watson, 25, has broadly denied that he acted inappropriately & said in a Tuesday statement that he looks forward to clearing his name. In a statement Friday, an attorney for Watson, Rusty Hardin, called the allegations “meritless.”

At a Friday news conference, Buzbee said he expects to file more lawsuits & his firm is vetting additional claims from women, including 1 involving an incident this month. None of his clients had filed police reports, he said, “but that is our next step.”

Buzbee said some of the massage therapists who came forward work at spas, some work from their homes, some work at deluxe hotels. All but one, who was flown in from Atlanta, were from the Houston area.

“These are, for the most part, licensed professionals. These are people that, many of them, are single mothers, either own their own shop or work in a spa,” while 3 clients are married and 1 is engaged, he said.

Hardin’s statement said he is “extremely proud to represent Deshaun Watson and wholly stand behind him.”

Watson is 1 of the league’s top quarterbacks & led the NFL in yards passing last season. He signed a 4-year, $156 million contract extension with the Texans last offseason, but he became unhappy with the direction of the team as Houston sunk to 4-12 & he requested a trade in January.

On the one year anniversary of his death, the mother of Ahmaud Arbery has filed a lawsuit, alleging there was a conspiracy to protect those responsible for her son's death.

Wanda Cooper filed the civil lawsuit Tuesday in the Southern District of Georgia against the three men charged with murder -- Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael & William Bryan -- as well as more than a dozen law enforcement officers, Glynn County, former Glynn County District Attorney Jackie Johnson & Ware County District Attorney George Barnhill.

Cooper is seeking more than $1 million in damages.

The lawsuit alleges that, following repeated trespasses by various people at a construction site, Glynn County law enforcement authorized the McMichaels, Bryan & others to act as law enforcement within the community.

It also cites a 2019 memorandum from Glynn County Manager Alan Ours which stated the Glynn County Police Department had a culture of "cronyism, outdated policies, lack of appropriate training & loss of State certification." And that there is "an ongoing culture of cover-up, failure to supervise, abuse of power & lack of accountability."

The lawsuit states that the elder McMichael once worked as an investigator for Johnson's office & she personally intervened to try to keep him on the police force after he repeatedly failed to complete state-mandated officer training.

"Johnson instructed law enforcement not to arrest her former colleague, his son or Bryan," the lawsuit states.

Johnson gave the case to neighboring Ware County. But Barnhill also had a prior relationship with Gregory McMichael.

"When this connection was discovered, Barnhill, too, was forced to recuse himself, but not before issuing a letter intended to justify the murder of Ahmaud as "perfectly legal," based on a multitude of demonstrably false statements," the lawsuit reads.

(WBAL) The jury has ruled in favor of the family of Korryn Gaines in their wrongful death civil trial in Baltimore County.

After deliberating for about three hours, jurors ruled that Baltimore County police Officer Royce Ruby did not act reasonably in the fatal shooting of Gaines and the wounding of her son, Kodi, in August 2016.

The jury awarded the family more than $36 million, including actual medical and funeral expenses and non-economic damages (pain and suffering). No punitive damages were awarded.

The jury awarded $32 million to Kodi, $300,000 to Korryn Gaines' father, $300,000 to Korryn Gaines' mother, $300,000 to Korryn Gaines' estate, and $4.5 million to Karsyn Courtney, Korryn Gaines' daughter.

Gaines' family was crying and hugging in the courtroom after the jury verdict was read. Ruby did not flinch as the verdict and damages were read.

"I don't know how anyone can just extinguish a life, then hide behind a badge," Korryn Gaines' mother, Rhanda Dormeus, said. "I can't even get out of bed to do my activities of daily life. I was a registered nurse, a psychiatric nurse. This has ripped me apart. I am not mad with Officer Ruby. I don't have any space to be mad because my heart is too broken."

"For Kodi, it means a lot. Now he's going to be able to get the help he needs. It's a sad situation what happened, and I'm very glad the jury came back and saw what was going on in that courtroom was't right, and what happened Aug. 1 wasn't right either," Korryn Gaines' father, Corey Cunningham, said.

"This is a great day. This is a great statement on behalf of many who have been victimized by police officers -- too many in our community. This is a great day," said Ken Ravenell, attorney for Kodi Gaines.

"Korryn is smiling today. She got her day in court," said J. Wyndal Gordon, the attorney for the Gaines family.

Baltimore County Attorney Mike Field issued a statement, saying, "A mother died, a child was unintentionally injured, and police officers were placed in mortal danger. By any account, this was a tragic situation. The county is disappointed with the verdict and is reviewing all of its options, including an appeal."

In September 2016, Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger said no criminal charges would be filed against the officers involved. Ruby was promoted after the shooting.

"I hope that Shellenberger is now second-guessing his decision. I have no degree of faith that he would reconsider it," Gordon said.

"This guy knowingly assassinated my daughter and injured my grandson to, I believe, beyond repair with post-traumatic stress," Dormeus said. "This win is for all of my sisters in the movement who have lost their children to police violence. Some of them have never received justice, either criminally or civil. I just want to tell them that this win is for them."

"He needs to pay for it more than just out of pocket because, actually the citizens are going to pay for this, he's not even going to pay. He's going home to his family. My family has been destroyed," said Kareem Courtney, Karsyn's father.
