AP) — Carey Wooten spent nearly 7 weeks hunting for safe drinking water for herself, her 2 children & 3 dogs, so Gov. Tate Reeves’ announcement that the water is clean again in Mississippi’s capital came as welcome news.
But the crisis in the city of Jackson isn’t over.
“The water that’s coming out of my kitchen sink smells like fresh sewage ... as soon as you turn it on, it hits you right in the face. It’s horrible,” Wooten said. “I’ve tried to give 1 of my dogs the water, but when she smells it she won’t even touch it.”
How did this happen? Residents, politicians, experts & activists say systemic racism is the root cause.
Jackson’s population has declined since 1980, a decade after the city’s schools began integrating. Many white families left for the suburbs, leaving less revenue to maintain the infrastructure. Middle class Black people then moved out to escape urban decay & rising crime. State & federal spending never made up the difference.
When it comes to water scarcity & contamination, they say working-class communities of color are most vulnerable. Jackson’s population is more than 80% Black & the poverty level is 24.5%. Majority-Black Flint, Michigan, has struggled to remove lead from its water since 2014. Other areas where large poor or nonwhite populations lack reliably safe drinking water include major cities like Baltimore & Honolulu as well as smaller municipalities like Las Vegas, New Mexico & Benton Harbor, Michigan.
“I want to be hopeful & optimistic,” Karla McCullough said. “In my lifetime, I may not see the infrastructure fixed & it restored to a point where there are not any water issues. But my hope is that my son & his children won’t have to deal with this.”

Some rich person just coughed up an unprecedented amount of money to cop a rare Michael Jordan jersey -- unloading over $10 MILLION to acquire some of His Airness' former threads!!
The MJ jersey -- one that the Chicago Bulls legend wore during Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals -- went up for auction on Sept. 6 ... and TMZ Sports has learned the gavel officially came down on the sale on Wednesday for a staggering $10,091,000.
The number is shocking -- considering experts at Sotheby's, which hosted the auction, initially predicted it would sell for around $3 million.
The eight-figure price tag, according to Sotheby's, set multiple records -- including most ever for a basketball jersey at auction, most ever for any game-worn sports memorabilia, and most ever paid for an MJ item.
The jersey -- while expensive -- is pretty incredible ... Jordan wore it when he scored 33 points against the Utah Jazz. And, while MJ lost the contest in the uni, he and the Bulls went on to win the series, giving Jordan his sixth NBA championship.
No word yet on who the buyer is -- but something tells us they've got some deep pockets to put their new jersey in.

ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) — A woman outfitted with a tiny microphone & hidden camera walked up to a dilapidated drug house on a chilly afternoon last year looking to buy meth from a dealer known on the streets as “Mississippi.”
But as the informant disappeared inside with a career criminal with a rap sheet spanning 3 decades, her cop handlers left her undercover on her own — unprotected & unmonitored in real time. And the devices she carried passively recorded a crime far more horrific than any drug buy.
The dealer forced the woman to perform oral sex on him, twice & paused at one point to conduct a separate drug deal.
“It was one of the worst depictions of sexual abuse I have ever seen,” said an official who saw the footage. "Just the audio from it is enough to turn your stomach. It’s a female being sexually brutalized while she’s crying and whimpering.”
Even as the woman cried and her assailant threatened to put her “in the hospital,” narcotics deputies remained down the block in the blighted neighborhood, unaware of what was going on.
Antonio D. Jones, 48, was charged with second-degree rape, false imprisonment & distribution of meth after cops recovered 5 grams.
“We’ve always done it this way,” said Lt. Mark Parker. “She was an addict and we just used her as an informant like we’ve done a million times before.”
3 weeks after her recorded assault the woman was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia stemming from an arrest that happened about a month before the sting & she’s been booked on possession charges at least twice since then.

A teenage human trafficking victim who was initially charged with first-degree murder after she stabbed her accused rapist to death was sentenced Tuesday in an Iowa court to 5 years of closely supervised probation & ordered to pay $150,000 restitution to the man’s family.
Pieper Lewis, 17, was sentenced Tuesday after she pleaded last year to involuntary manslaughter & willful injury in the June 2020 killing of 37-year-old Zachary Brooks of Des Moines. Both charges were punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
A judge deferred those prison sentences, meaning that if Lewis violates any portion of her probation, she could be sent to prison to serve that 20-year term.
As for being required to pay the estate of her rapist, “this court is presented with no other option,” Porter said, noting the restitution is mandatory under Iowa law that has been upheld by the Iowa Supreme Court.
Lewis was 15 when she stabbed Brooks more than 30 times in a Des Moines apartment. Officials have said Lewis was a runaway who was seeking to escape an abusive life with her adopted mother & was sleeping in the hallways of a Des Moines apartment building when a 28-year-old man took her in before forcibly trafficking her to other men for sex.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- An internal review is underway after a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy got sick Wednesday morning at a substation. Sources told ABC13 the deputy took drugs, which had been recovered at a crime scene, because he thought they were candy.
It happened at the Cypresswood substation in northwest Harris County. The drugs were colorful in nature & divided into clear plastic baggies & packed in a box. The deputy said he mistook it for candy.
"A deputy fell ill while at the station, was transported to the hospital and was released and (Wednesday) morning," according to a text from Dep. Thomas Gilliland. "We're not sure what exactly caused his illness & we're reviewing the situation."
The drugs were recovered Tuesday at an apartment on Spring Cypress, sources said. Around lunchtime, the resident called the sheriff's office for help when he thought someone had broken in. But a safety sweep yielded no intruder. Instead, deputies found large bags of marijuana & boxes of edibles and mushrooms. One of those boxes, sources said, was left unattended at the substation.
"Evidence cannot be sat anywhere when it is not secure," retired Texas Rangers Chief Tony Leal said. "Once you remove evidence, then it's got to be in the custody of someone or in a place that cannot be tampered with, period."
