SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Prosecutors have formally dismissed an involuntary manslaughter charge against Alec Baldwin in the fatal 2021 shooting of a cinematographer on the set of the film “Rust, ” citing new evidence & the need for more time to investigate.

In a stunning turnaround for the 65-year-old A-list actor, special prosecutors Kari Morrissey & Jason Lewis filed the notice to dismiss the only remaining criminal allegation against Baldwin on Friday in state District Court in Santa Fe. Prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing.

An involuntary manslaughter charge against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the weapons supervisor on the film, is unchanged.

An online status hearing was scheduled for Friday afternoon in state District Court in the case against Gutierrez-Reed. Baldwin’s involvement in the hearing was called off with no charge pending against him.

Friday’s court filing echoed early statements from prosecutors that new facts had been revealed in the investigation that demand further investigation & forensic analysis, with little time left before evidentiary hearings scheduled to start on May 3.

On Thursday, the special prosecutors said that the “decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability & charges may be refiled.”

Baldwin was pointing a pistol at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal when it went off, killing her & wounding director Joel Souza.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — 5 months after a deadlocked jury led to a mistrial for actor Danny Masterson, the former star of “That ’70s Show” is about to be retried in a Los Angeles court. Masterson is accused of raping 3 women between 2001 & 2003. He could get 45 years in prison if convicted.

Here’s the key element key elements, characters and issues that will factor into the retrial. Opening statements are set to begin on Monday.

The Church of Scientology loomed large at Masterson’s trial. It could loom larger still in his retrial, with Judge Charlaine Olmedo allowing expert testimony on Scientology that she denied the first time.

Masterson is a prominent member of the church. All 3 of his accusers are former members who grew disillusioned with the institution in the aftermath of their alleged assaults, saying that the institution & its policies protected Masterson while they found themselves harassed & discouraged from going to authorities. The church has said neither is true.

The 2 opposing experts set to testify embody the stark cultural divides the church sometimes creates. The prosecution’s expert, Claire Headley, is a former official in Scientology’s leadership group, known as the Sea Org, who became a staunch church foe, suing it in 2009 over her experience. The defense’s expert is Hugh Martin Whitt, a current high-level Scientologist who is Headley’s estranged stepfather.

THE DEFENDANT

Masterson, 47, an actor since childhood, got his major break when he was cast as Stephen Hyde on the retro sitcom “That ’70s Show,” which also starred Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis & Topher Grace & would run on Fox from 1998 until 2006. At the time of the alleged assaults, his career was at its peak & his house near Hollywood with a backyard pool & Jacuzzi was a social hub. It was also, according to prosecutors, the scene of all 3 crimes.

5 people, including 3 teenagers, have been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting at a birthday party in Alabama over the weekend where 4 victims were killed & 32 others were injured.

The most recent arrest was 19-year-old Willie George Brown Jr. on Thursday. He's been charged with 4 counts of reckless murder.

Ty Reik McCullough, 17 & Travis McCullough, 16, were each charged as adults with 4 counts of reckless murder on Tuesday.

Wilson LaMar Hill Jr., 20, was arrested on Wednesday & also charged with 4 counts of reckless murder. Johnny Letron Brown, 20, was arrested & formally charged with & counts of reckless murder on Thursday.

4 victims are still in the hospital in critical condition.

The shooting took place at a crowded birthday party in the small town of Dadeville.

Officials said they are still in the early stages of the investigation & more charges will be coming. 

Officials did not reveal whether they have identified a motive for the shooting.

1 of the victims killed in the shooting -- 18-year-old Philstavious Dowdell -- was attending his sister's 16th birthday party.

In addition to Dowdell, the 3 others killed in the shooting were identified as 23-year-old Corbin Dahmontrey Holston, 19-year-old Marsiah Emmanuel Collins & 17-year-old Shaunkivia Nicole Smith.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Fox and Dominion Voting Systems reached a settlement Tuesday in the voting machine company’s defamation lawsuit, averting a trial in a case that exposed how the top-rated network chased viewers by promoting lies about the 2020 presidential election.

An attorney for Dominion said the settlement was for $787.5 million.

“The truth matters. Lies have consequences,” said Dominion lawyer Justin Nelson in a news conference outside the courthouse after the announcement.

Dominion had asked for $1.6 billion in arguing that Fox had damaged its reputation by helping peddle phony conspiracy theories about its equipment switching votes from former President Donald Trump to Democrat Joe Biden. Fox said the amount greatly overstated the value of the Colorado-based company.

STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — A Martin County sheriff's deputy is accused of stealing baby clothes and groceries in Port St. Lucie.

The sheriff's office said Port St. Lucie police arrested Nelson Garcia on multiple petit theft charges.

Investigators said he stole items from a Walmart store on 4 separate occasions, beginning on March 1.

Garcia would walk up to the self-checkout area with a cart full of items & grab 2 a time, scan the first & pretend to scan the second.

Police said he paid $114.97 for $278.72 worth of merchandise on that trip.

Garcia made a second trip to that same Walmart on March 15 where investigators say he paid $97.91 for grocery items & walked out with $128.17 worth of merchandise that he didn't pay for.

He made another shoplifting run on March 25. Police said he paid for $85.60 worth of merchandise & failed to pay for another $71 worth of items.

On April. 1, Garcia paid $35.72 for groceries & walked out with $76.76 worth of un-scanned merchandise.

When investigators confronted Garcia with video of the transactions, the deputy said, "yea, that's me and if I didn't pay, I can go back and pay Walmart back but really for eggs that cost two bucks?" According to the arrest report, Nelson told investigators, "I wouldn't do that. Do you know what I do?" while pointing at his patrol car several times.

The sheriff's office says Garcia is on unpaid administrative leaving pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. He'll face an internal investigation by the sheriff's office as well.

Garcia has been with the sheriff's office for about 3 years. He's being held at the St. Lucie County Jail.

New Delhi (CBS News) — An Indian couple has allegedly died by suicide by using a guillotine-like mechanism to decapitate themselves in a sacrificial ritual, police said Sunday.

Hemubhai Makwana, 38, & his wife Hansaben, 35, both died by decapitation after using a homemade bladed mechanism in a hut on their farm in the western state of Gujarat.

"The couple first prepared a fire altar before putting their heads under a guillotine-like mechanism held by a rope," Indrajeetsinh Jadeja, a police sub-inspectorsaid. "As soon as they released the rope, an iron blade fell on them, severing their heads, which rolled into the fire."

Fire is considered sacred in Hinduism and it plays a significant role in several worship rituals. The couple apparently designed the device used in their beheading in such a way that their heads would roll into the fire altar, completing their sacrificial ritual.

Police, who said they had found a suicide note addressed to family members, have launched an investigation. The couple is survived by two children & their parents.
