Actress/Singer Bette Midler Says Women Should Stop Having Sex With Men To Protest The Anti-Abortion Ban In Texas

Bette Midler says women everywhere should sing a new tune in the bedroom to protest new, strict anti-abortion laws like the one in Texas.

“I suggest that all women refuse to have sex with men until they are guaranteed the right to choose by Congress,” the famed actress and singer tweeted Thursday.

The idea, though, might not be original with Midler.

Nancy Sinatra told Midler on Twitter that, “My dad actually suggested that decades ago.”

One commenter told Midler, “Did you know you’re my Shero?”

Actress Rosanna Arquette, however, was not so upbeat about Midler’s not so modest proposal.

“but then again men with angry Guns and rape not being a much of a crime in Texas .watch this space,” [sic] she tweeted back to Midler.

The US Supreme Court voted 5-4 on Wednesday denying an emergency appeal filed by abortion providers in an attempt to block a Texas abortion bill that went into effect the same day.

Signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in May, the new law prohibits women from getting an abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, roughly around six weeks and before most women know they are pregnant.

The law lets private citizens sue anyone who assisted in terminating the pregnancy, including those who drive a woman to an abortion appointment.

Eye For An Eye: Judge Requests Doctors Injure Criminal's Spine Exactly Like He Did To Victim

A Saudi judge has asked several hospitals if they are willing to damage a man's spinal cord as punishment for a cleaver attack that left a 22-year-old paralysed. The victim, Abdul-Aziz al Mutairi, became paralysed and subsequently lost a foot after a fight more than two years ago. An unnamed man was sentenced to 14 months in prison for the assault, but released after serving only half that time. The shortened jail time has reportedly enraged Mr Mutairi's family. His 27-year-old brother Khaled said they want an equivalent punishment for the attacker and have appealed to a judge in northwestern Tabuk province. "We are asking for our legal right under Islamic law," the brother said. "There is no better word than God's word - an eye for an eye." The judge has since asked several hospitals if medical paralysis was possible and would they perform the operation. Local newspapers reported a facility in the capital Riyadh had declined, saying it could not inflict such harm. Saudi Arabia enforces strict Islamic law and occasionally hands out punishments based on the ancient legal code. Amnesty International has expressed concerns over the reports and said it was contacting Saudi authorities for details. "We are very concerned and we will appeal to the authorities not to carry out such a punishment," said Lamri Chirouf, the group's researcher on Saudi Arabia. He added this was the first time Amnesty had heard of a punishment involving the damaging of a spinal cord. "It's hard to follow details of the Saudi justice system. Fantasia Barrino Finally Speaks Out On Suicide Attempt "I Wanted Out". Her VH1 Special Airs Same Day New CD Drops. Was It All A Publicity Stunt?

There's no way to know for sure if Fantasia Barrino's suicide attempt was real or a publicity stunt. But her actions following her release from the hospital call into question her true motives. Just one day after getting out of the hospital for an aspirin overdose, the singer is seen with the married man she is accused of having an affair with. A camera crew was with them. It's believed they were being filmed for a segment on Fantasia's VH1 Behind The Music special, which happens to air on the same day her new album, 'Back To Me' is being released. Fantasia insists the suicide attempt was real. She's quoted in a story that appears today on PEOPLE.com as saying: "I didn't have any fight in me. I didn't care about anything. I just wanted out. At that moment, I wanted out. I wanted it to be over with – all of it, all of that [expletive]. I just sat in the closet and looked at the mirror and took all the pills in the bottle. I wanted to go to sleep and just be at peace. I knew exactly what I was doing. You can't accidentally take a whole bottle of pills. I was tired of people doing me wrong, constantly, over and over again, dealing with my family – my father, dealing with men and their [expletive] – I was tired. My head was hurting me. I was over it." Maybe Fantasia's head was hurting because she is facing a possible lawsuit from Paula Cook. The wife of Antwaun Cook, the man who's been breaking Barrino's back for a hot minute now. "[Paula Cook] has threatened via her lawyers to me to sue Fantasia," the singer's lawyer, Gena Morris, told PEOPLE. North Carolina is one of seven states that allows the "other man" or "other woman" to be sued for alienation of affection and criminal conversation. In March a woman named Anne Lunquist was ordered to pay $9 millions dollars to Cynthia Shackelford of North Carolina for breaking up her marriage under that very law.

Fantasia and Antwuan Cook With Camera Crew One Day After Her Release From Hospital For "Overdose" So if Fantasia wasn't faking a suicide attempt, it could be the possibility of losing everything she has motivated her to end it all or at least seek sympathy. "I remember waking up in the hospital [and thinking], 'It didn't work, I'm still here in this hellhole. Still here with all this drama going on,'" she now says. Fantasia better hope Paula Cook decides to take it easy on her or that "hellhole" she thinks she's been living in is going to get a whole lot hotter.

Actress and AIDS activist Rosie Perez claims she was injured back in Sept. 2009 on the set of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Now, ET talks to the Emmy-nominated actress to find out why she is wearing a neck brace and why she was scared for her career.

"I have two slipped discs, one bulge, three sprained ligaments, and a pinched nerve, which resulted in minor nerve damage," Rosie tells ET.

She says the problem began during a stunt, which she says resulted in shaken baby syndrome, but she says she was initially misdiagnosed, and, as a result, she waited a long time to get a correct diagnosis.

"Then, when the problem was diagnosed correctly, I didn't listen to the doctors because I wanted to try alternative methods to heal. Then, I finally had to relent and give in to surgery," she says.

NBC was contacted but declined to comment on the story.

ET caught up with Rosie, a member of the Presidential Advisory Council for HIV/AIDS (PACHA), shortly after she returned from Washington, D.C., where she met President Barack Obama, neck brace and all.

"I have been an AIDS activist for 23 years," Rosie says. "AIDS has been in our lives for 30 years and there has never been a national AIDS strategy ever in the United States of America. This was the first time that it has occurred."

Naturally, she didn't want to miss the occasion, so Rosie, who had surgery just a few weeks ago, talked to her doctor, who gave her permission to go only if she followed his instructions to the letter: Go to the White House, do her thing and leave. No parties.

"We got to have a private moment with the president," she continues. "I sat in a chair and I did not want to have the picture taken with the neck brace on, so I had my scarf to rap around it. I could not stand at attention. [When] the Commander and Chief walks in the room, you stand at attention.

So, he is shaking everyone's hands and he gets to me and he says, 'Rosie, what did you do to yourself?' I said, 'I injured myself on set.' He said, 'What were you doing -- a stunt? And everyone said, 'Yeah,' and he goes, 'Didn't they tell you that they have professionals to do that?' It was really funny."

Despite her injury, Rosie, who says she hadn't worked since September, managed to film a Lifetime TV movie, "Lies in Plain Sight," again under strict doctor's orders.

She says, "I went to my doctor and I said, 'I really want to do this project.' He said, 'All you can do is dialogue, you can't do any action.' So, I had a spinal injection and they extracted spinal fluid and they injected this other thing in my neck and in my spine. I was only able to work for, I think, five days, or six or seven days. But, then, towards the end of the shoot, I was in so much pain that we had to really, really take it easy."

Rosie says she has gotten through all this with the help of loved ones and by staying positive. She is so positive, in fact, that she has more work lined up for when the doctor gives her the green light to resume her career.

Controversial New Arizona Immigration Law Draws Furor {Video]

PHOENIX — The furor over Arizona’s new law cracking down on illegal immigrants grew Monday as opponents used refried beans to smear swastikas on the state Capitol, civil rights leaders demanded a boycott of the state and the Obama administration weighed a possible legal challenge.

Activists are planning a challenge of their own, hoping to block the law from taking effect by arguing that it encroaches on the federal government’s authority to regulate immigration and violates people’s constitutional rights by giving police too much power.

The measure — set to take effect in late July or early August — would make it a crime under state law to be in the U.S. illegally. It directs state and local police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal.

"If you look or sound foreign, you are going to be subjected to never-ending requests for police to confirm your identity and to confirm your citizenship," said Alessandra Soler Meetze, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, which is exploring legal action.

Employees at the Capitol came to work Monday to find that vandals had smeared swastikas on the windows. And protesters gathered for a second straight day to speak out against a law they say will lead to rampant racial profiling of anyone who looks Hispanic.

The White House would not rule out the possibility that the administration would take legal action against Arizona. President Barack Obama, who warned last week that the measure could lead to police abuses, asked the Justice Department to complete a review of the law’s implications before deciding how to proceed.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said the law is discriminatory and warned that trade and political ties with Arizona will be seriously strained by the crackdown.

Currently, many U.S. police departments do not ask about people’s immigration status unless they have run afoul of the law in some other way. Many departments say stopping and questioning people will only discourage immigrants from cooperating to solve crimes.

Under the new Arizona law, immigrants unable to produce documents showing they are allowed to be in the U.S. could be arrested, jailed for up to six months and fined $2,500. That is a significant escalation of the typical federal punishment for being here illegally — deportation.

People arrested by Arizona police would be turned over to federal immigration officers. Opponents said the federal government could thwart the law by refusing to accept them.

Supporters of the law said it is necessary to protect Arizonans from crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Arizona is home to an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants and is the nation’s busiest gateway for people slipping into the country.

Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, who signed the bill on Friday, said Arizona must act because Washington has failed to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs from Mexico. Brewer has ordered state officials to develop a training course for officers to learn what constitutes reasonable suspicion that someone is in the U.S. illegally.

The crux of opponents’ arguments is that only the federal government has the authority to regulate immigration.

"If every state had its own laws, we wouldn’t be one country; we’d be 50 different countries," said Thomas Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Kevin Johnson, dean of the law school at the University of California-Davis and an immigration law professor, said such a lawsuit would have a very good chance of success. He said the state law gets into legal trouble by giving local law enforcement officers the authority to enforce immigration laws.

"States can’t give them that power," Johnson said. "The federal government could if it wanted to, but it hasn’t."

However, Gerald Neuman, a Harvard Law School professor, said Arizona could make a compelling legal argument that it has overlapping authority to protect its residents.

Johnson said opponents could also argue that the law could violate their Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure because it gives police officers broad authority to determine who should be questioned.

Kris Kobach, a University of Missouri-Kansas City law professor who helped write the Arizona legislation, said he anticipated legal challenges and carefully drafted the language. He said the state law is only prohibiting conduct already illegal under federal law.

In a statement Friday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the state’s new law would probably hinder law enforcement in dealing with more serious crimes. Napolitano vetoed similar proposals when she was Arizona governor.

"They would have diverted critical law enforcement resources from the most serious threats to public safety and undermined the vital trust between local jurisdictions and the communities they serve," she said.

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera urged policymakers in the city to stop dealing with Arizona and Arizona businesses. Leaders in Mexico and California also demanded a boycott, as did civil rights leader Al Sharpton.

The law has strong public support in Arizona, where passions have been running high since a rancher was killed close to the Mexican border last month, apparently by drug smugglers from across the border.

It is the ultimate alchemy to transform all such negatives into advantages and power. 4. Keep Moving - Calculated Momentum In the present there is constant change and so much we cannot control. If you try to micromanage it all, you lose even greater control in the long run. The answer is to let go and move with the chaos that presents itself to you - from within it, you will find endless opportunities that elude most people. don’t give others the chance to pin you down; keep moving and changing your appearances to fit the environment. if you encounter walls or boundaries, slip around them. do not let anything disrupt your flow. 5. Know When to Be Bad - Aggression You will always find yourself among the aggressive and the passive aggressive who seek to harm you in some way. You must get over any general fears you have of confronting people or you will find it extremely difficult to assert yourself in the face of those who are more cunning and ruthless. Before it is too late you must master the art of knowing when and how to be bad - using deception, manipulation, and outright force at the appropriate moments. Everyone operates with a flexible morality when it comes to their self-interest—you are simply making this more conscious and effective. 6. Lead from the Front - Authority In any group, the person on top consciously or unconsciously sets the tone. If leaders are fearful, hesitant to take any risks, or overly concerned for their ego and reputation, then this invariably filters its way through the entire group and makes effective action impossible. Complaining and haranguing people to work harder has a counterproductive effect. You must adopt the opposite style: imbue your troops with the proper spirit through your actions, not words. They see you working harder than anyone, holding yourself to the highest standards, taking risks with confidence, and making tough decisions. This inspires and binds the group together. In these democratic times, you must practice what you preach. 7. Know Your Environment from the Inside Out - Connection Most people think first of what they want to express or make, then find the audience for their idea. You must work the opposite angle, thinking first of the public. You need to keep your focus on their changing needs, the trends that are washing through them. Beginning with their demand, you create the appropriate supply. Do not be afraid of people’s criticisms - without such feedback your work will be too personal and delusional. You must maintain as close a relationship to your environment as possible, getting an inside “feel” for what is happening around you. Never lose touch with your base. 8. Respect the Process - Mastery The fools in life want things fast and easy — money, success, attention. Boredom is their great enemy and fear. Whatever they manage to get slips through their hands as fast as it comes in. You, on the other hand, want to outlast your rivals. You are building the foundation for something that can continue to expand. To make this happen, you will have to serve an apprenticeship. You must learn early on to endure the hours of practice and drudgery, knowing that in the end all of that time will translate into a higher pleasure—mastery of a craft and of yourself. Your goal is to reach the ultimate skill level—an intuitive feel for what must come next. 9. Push Beyond Your Limits - Self-Belief Your sense of who you are will determine your actions and what you end up getting in life. If you see your reach as limited, that you are mostly helpless in the face of so many difficulties, that it is best to keep your ambitions low, then you will receive the little that you expect. Knowing this dynamic, you must train yourself for the opposite—ask for more, aim high, and believe that you are destined for something great. Your sense of self-worth comes from you alone—never the opinion of others. With a rising confidence in your abilities, you will take risks that will increase your chances of success. People follow those who know where they are going, so cultivate an air of certainty and boldness. 10. Confront Your Mortality - The Sublime In the face of our inevitable mortality we can do one of two things. We can attempt to avoid the thought at all costs, clinging to the illusion that we have all the time in the world. Or we can confront this reality, accept and even embrace it, converting our consciousness of death into something positive and active. In adopting such a fearless philosophy, we gain a sense of proportion, become able to separate what is petty from what is truly important. Knowing our days to be numbered, we have a sense of urgency and mission. We can appreciate life all the more for its impermanence.
