"Don't make a wrong move," the officer said as he pinned the struggling subject to the ground. "Period."
The officer tightened the handcuffs around the subject's thin wrists.
"Ow, ow, ow, it really hurts," the subject exclaimed.
The officer pressed his weight into the subject's small body while school staff watched it all unfold. The person he was restraining was 7 years old.
"If you, my friend, are not acquainted with the juvenile justice system, you will be very shortly," the officer told the child.
Earlier that day, the child allegedly spit at a teacher. Now, he was in handcuffs & a police officer was saying he could end up in jail.
That child — a 2nd grader with autism at a North Carolina school — was ultimately pinned on the floor for 38 minutes. At one point the officer put his knee in the child's back.
In 2018, a 10-year-old with autism was pinned face down and cuffed in Denton, Texas.
Another boy with autism, just 11 years old, was handcuffed & dragged out of school & forced into a sheriff's deputy's car in Colorado in 2021.
That same year, officers handcuffed & screamed at a 5-year-old who had wandered away from school.
More than 700 children were arrested in U.S. elementary schools during the 2017-2018 school year alone.
Children with documented disabilities were 4 times more likely to be arrested at school.
Black students are even more disproportionately affected. They made up nearly half of all arrests at elementary schools. But they accounted for just 15% of the student population in those schools.
Anyone working with children with disabilities must understand how to respond when a child with an emotional or behavioral disorder acts out, according to Dr. Sonya Mathies-Dinizulu.
In a crisis, children need someone to "be there to help the kid start to de-escalate & help soothe," she said.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (11Alive) — A contentious divorce case led to homicide and arson at the law offices of one of the divorce attorneys late Wednesday afternoon, according to court documents and police files.
Popular, beloved Lawrenceville Attorney Doug Lewis was shot inside his own law offices, and his offices were set on fire.
It turns out one of Lewis's clients was a woman who had filed for divorce early last year, and police said it was the woman’s husband who went after Lewis Wednesday.
Lewis’s law offices, in an old, converted house along Stone Mountain Street in Lawrenceville, were set on fire and severely damaged at about 5:00 p.m. Wednesday. Then, inside, firefighters found Lewis’s body.
“It’s pretty brazen. It’s kind of out of the blue," Lawrenceville Police Lt. Jake Parker said Thursday.
Lt. Parker said Lewis was in his law offices by himself when a man named Allen Tayeh walked in and shot Lewis. Then, Parker said, investigators believe Tayeh poured gasoline inside the offices and started the fire.
Tayeh is initially being charged with two felonies, malice murder and arson.
Tom Pasquarello’s phone started buzzing around 7 a.m. on Thursday.
“Did you hear the news?” a friend asked.
“What news?” Pasquarello responded.
The news turned out to be the undoing of one of Pasquarello’s proudest achievements from his tenure as a regional director with the Drug Enforcement Administration. The U.S. had released the notorious Russian arms trafficker who Pasquarello helped take down 14 years ago.
Viktor Bout, the so-called “Merchant of Death” is who Russia received back from the U.S. on Thursday in a prisoner swap for WNBA star Brittney Griner. Bout, 55, was serving a 25-year sentence in an Illinois federal prison on charges of providing weapons to terrorists & conspiring to kill Americans.
“I’m kind of in disbelief that someone with the potential to orchestrate arms deals that can kill Americans anywhere in the world would be traded for a prisoner,” Pasquarello said. “I think this sends a terrible message that the U.S. will negotiate, that the U.S. will make concessions & that, if an American is held overseas, there’s always the potential that the U.S. will acquiesce to the demands of people like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin & bail them out.”

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana’s attorney general has sued Chinese-owned social media app TikTok, claiming the video-sharing platform misleads its users, particularly children, about the level of inappropriate content & security of consumer information.
Todd Rokita claimed in a complaint filed Wednesday that while the social video app says it is safe for users 13 years & older, the app contains “salacious & inappropriate content” available to young users “for unlimited periods of time, day & night, in an effort to line TikTok’s pockets with billions of dollars from U.S. consumers.”
A separate complaint from Rokita argues the app has users’ sensitive & personal information but deceives consumers into believing that information is secure.
TikTok is owned by ByteDance. The app has been targeted by Republicans who say the Chinese government could access its user data like browsing history & location. U.S. armed forces also have prohibited the app on military devices.
TikTok said its “top priority” is “the safety, privacy & security of our community.”
However, they've struggled to detect ads that contain blatant misinformation about U.S. elections
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday banned the use of TikTok & certain China & Russia-based platforms in the state’s executive branch of government, a measure to address cybersecurity risks presented by the platforms.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem banned state employees & contractors from accessing TikTok on state-owned devices, citing the app’s ties to China. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, on Monday asked the state’s Department of Administration to ban TikTok from all state government devices it manages. Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts blocked TikTok on state electronic devices.
