LOS ANGELES (AP) — California investigators have arrested and charged a man in connection with the shooting of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies earlier this month as they sat in their squad car, authorities said Wednesday.
Attempted murder charges were filed against Deonte Lee Murray, 36, District Attorney Jackie Lacey told reporters.
Murray was arrested two weeks ago in connection with a separate carjacking. He pleaded not guilty to charges in both cases during his arraignment Wednesday. He is being held in jail on $6.15 million bail and is due back in court in November.
Murray’s attorney, Jack Brennan, declined to comment. Murray faces life in state prison if he is convicted.
Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau Capt. Kent Wegener, who provided details about the investigation, did not suggest a specific motive for the attack “other than the fact that he obviously hates policemen and he wants them dead.”
Lacey described the shooting as “premeditated,” but she declined to say what led investigators to believe that.
The deputies suffered head wounds in the Sept. 12 ambush and have since been released from the hospital and are recovering. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said, however, that they face further reconstructive surgeries and that their recoveries will be a long process.
“We saw the worst of humanity” in the shooting, Villanueva said.
Surveillance video showed a person walking toward the patrol car, which was parked at a Metro rail station in the city of Compton, and firing a handgun through the passenger-side window. The deputies radioed for help despite their wounds.
The deputies, a 31-year-old woman and 24-year-old man graduated together from the sheriff’s academy 14 months ago.
Investigators determined that the suspect fled in a black Mercedes Benz sedan and learned that type of vehicle was stolen in a Sept. 1 carjacking in which the driver was shot. A suspect was identified in the carjacking and photographs were compared to images from the ambush, strengthening a connection to the shooting of the deputies, Wegener said.
On Sept. 15, an investigator spotted the suspect driving another vehicle and attempted to stop him. A gun was thrown out before the suspect abandoned the car in the city of Lynwood. He ran off and was ultimately captured. The black Mercedes was found nearby.
That day, Villanueva told reporters the carjacking suspect was not related to the ambush case. He defended his actions that misled reporters, and the public, on Wednesday.
“We’re not going to tell you everything we suspect,” the sheriff said, to protect the investigation.
Ballistics testing of the gun — a so-called ghost gun that is homemade and unregistered — discarded during the pursuit showed it was the one used in the attack on the deputies, Wegener said. He also noted that the gun held eight rounds, five short of its capacity, and that five rounds had been fired at the deputies.
Authorities said Murray, a Compton resident, has a criminal history including convictions for sales and possession of narcotics, firearm possession, receiving stolen property, burglary and terrorist threats. Wednesday’s criminal complaint includes allegations that he associates with gangs.
The Los Angeles Times first reported Murray’s arrest ahead of the news conference.
Compton is among communities near South Los Angeles, an area with a large Black population that has long been a flashpoint for racial tension and mistrust of police.
In recent weeks, demonstrators have marched to protest fatal shootings in the area, where deputies killed a Black man on Aug. 31 and a Black teenager in 2018.
After the ambush, a handful of protesters gathered outside the hospital where the deputies were treated and tried to block the emergency room entrance. Videos from the scene recorded protesters shouting expletives at police and at least one yelling “I hope they ... die.”
Wednesday’s announcement of the arrest in the shooting of the deputies followed a separate, seemingly unprovoked assault on another law enforcement officer in Southern California.
A Los Angeles police officer was attacked Saturday night inside the Harbor Community police station in San Pedro.
The assailant was recorded on surveillance video as he knocked the officer to the ground inside the station, pistol-whipped him with his own gun and pointed it at his chest. The officer is recovering from his injuries.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron now admits he never recommended the grand jury indict either of the 2 officers for shooting and killing Breonna Taylor.
Instead, Cameron says the case he presented to the grand jury is that the officers were fully justified in firing their weapons because Breonna's boyfriend had fired first at them. Cameron revealed some of his strategy in an interview with WDRB in Louisville ... saying, "Our recommendation is that [officers] Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove were justified in their acts and their conduct."
Cameron also said he told the grand jury that the single witness who says he heard the police announce themselves before the raid ... changed his story. WDRB did not ask Cameron if he also told the grand jury that 12 other witnesses said they did NOT hear the police announce themselves -- and that's a huge point.
If the police didn't identify themselves ... Kenneth Walker, Breonna's boyfriend, would be justified in firing his legally owned firearm at people he believed to be intruders in her apartment.
One other thing ... Cameron said nothing about recommending a manslaughter charge to the grand jury. He says wanton endangerment was the only thing he felt he could prove beyond a reasonable doubt. However, police allegedly didn't provide medical assistance to Breonna for 20 minutes ... which would seem to put manslaughter -- legally defined as reckless disregard for human life -- on the table.
Fired officer Brett Hankison is the only indicted officer ... for firing his weapon into a neighboring apartment.

The governor of California has signed a new "Kobe Bryant Law" -- which makes it a crime for first responders to take unauthorized pictures of a dead person at an accident scene.
The measure -- which takes effect on January 1st -- was triggered by the aftermath of the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash ... when 8 local deputies were accused of taking or sharing death pics for unofficial business.
In fact, at least one deputy was accused of using a Kobe death photo to try and pick up a woman at a bar.
But, on Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill which will make it a misdemeanor for a first responder to take or share pics from an accident or crime scene for any purpose outside official law enforcement or genuine public interest.
Kobe's widow, Vanessa Bryant, has already filed a lawsuit against the L.A. County Sheriff's Office over the alleged accident photo scandal. She's suing for negligence, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Kobe, along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and 7 other people, was killed in the January 26 incident when their chopper crashed in Calabasas on an extremely foggy day.

(CNN) A Louisiana police officer who claimed he was shot while on duty had instead shot himself in the leg, Deputy Chief Darrell B. Basco of the Pineville Police Department Administrative Bureau told CNN.
John Michael Goulart Jr., 25, was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of criminal mischief and one count of malfeasance in office after falsely claiming he'd been shot, according to Basco.
"The investigation led to a determination that the officer shot himself, concealed and altered the facts," according to a statement from Basco.
Around 11:50 p.m. Sunday night, Goulart, who was on duty, reported that he had been shot, according to Basco. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
Two rounds were fired, according to Basco. One hit Goulart in the leg and the other hit the door of his vehicle. "Everything shows it was an accidental discharge," Basco said.
However, he added that accidental discharge incidents require a review by the chief of police and raise the possibility of disciplinary action.
Goulart was booked at the Rapides Parish Detention Center, according to jail records. Basco told CNN that the charges Goulart faces are brought when an individual allegedly files a false police report. Goulart posted a $10,500 bond less than an hour after he was booked and remains on administrative leave.

Across the glorious and chequered pages of hip-hop history, instigators have always played a crucial role. Born of both purposeful actions and seemingly meaningless remarks that’d be blown out of proportion, the genre operates with an inherently short fuse. Nowadays, within a hip-hop media realm that requires sensationalised news to come churning off the assembly line, troublemakers are god-sends. Meaning that, whether it’s Soulja Boy, Tekashi 6ix9ine’s trolling sprees, Kodak Black’s unchecked disrespect, or 50 Cent acting as a cultural debt collector, these artists never fail to leave headlines in their wake. But when it comes to hip-hop figures that excels in manufacturing chaos, few have come close to DJ Vlad.

Over the last year, many have expressed concerns for former NBA player Delonte West's well-being. The latest is Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Cuban picked up the now homeless West at a gas station this week and offered to pay for treatment at a drug rehabilitation facility, according to ESPN.
On Tuesday, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported that West took Cuban up on that offer and has checked into a rehab facility in Florida.
Cuban has been trying to reach West, 37, by phone for days, and when he finally was able to connect with him, West agreed to a meeting. Cuban's call to assist West came after TMZ published a photo of West panhandling in Dallas on Sept. 24. After seeing the photo, the Mavericks owner reached out to West's mother, Delphina Addison, according to The Athletic. She told Cuban the best course of action was to find West. Once Cuban was with West, he waited with the former NBA player in a Texas hotel until Addison arrived.
West was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2008 and has publicly struggled financially in recent years. Countless former and current NBA players, as well as people from around the sports world, asked the public not to mock West after a video of him getting handcuffed by police in Washington, D.C., went viral in January.
During his time in the NBA, West was open about his bipolar disorder diagnosis. While with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2008, West got into a heated argument with a referee during a preseason scrimmage. So heated that afterward, West admitted he "needed help" and agreed to go see a therapist.
"In a sense, you feel like a weaker man, because you have to raise your hand and ask for help," he said after being diagnosed by that therapist, according to Slate. "But I found out over the last week that it made me a stronger person. I came back focused, and with the help of some medicine and talking with people on a regular basis, I'm back in good spirits."
West last played in the NBA in 2012. He has two sons with his wife Caressa Madden.

Dr. Dre is firing back at the request of his estranged wife's demand for nearly $2 mil a month in temporary spousal support, claiming he's already footing the bill for her every need and, according to the legal docs, her lawyers have already made more money off the 2-month old divorce than most Los Angelenos make in a year.
Dre says he's letting Nicole stay in HIS Malibu mansion, which he claims is worth $20 mil to $25 mil. It's interesting he describes the home as his and his alone. As we reported, the biggest bone of contention is the prenup, which could explain why he says the mansion is his.
Dre says his security brings Nicole meals prepared by his private chefs 3 to 5 times a week.
Dre also says all of Nicole's expenses are already covered by him, noting his business manager pays her AmEx Centurion Black Card, and those bills range from $150,000 a month to $350,000 per month.
Dre. says aside from what he calls "unauthorized charges for [Nicole's] attorney's fees," all of her expenses have been paid. As we reported, her lawyers are seeking $5 mil in fees.
Dre. says, "This all seems like the wrath of an angry person being exacerbated by opportunistic lawyers."
Dre also grouses that he has offered to pay her lawyers an additional $350,000 through the end of the year, but then learned she took nearly $400,000 out of his record company's business account. He says, nevertheless, he's willing to pay her fees."
