(ESPNNew Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was fatally shot after breaking down the door to a Dallas apartment early Saturday, authorities said.

Dejean-Jones' agent, Scott Nichols, said his client died after a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

According to Dallas police, officers responded to a call about a shooting at Camden Belmont Apartments around 3:20 a.m. Saturday morning. The resident of an apartment there said an individual had kicked open his front door and entered. The resident, who had been asleep, retrieved a handgun and called out to the individual but did not receive an answer. The individual kicked the bedroom door and the resident fired his gun through the door, striking him.

Officers who responded found Dejean-Jones collapsed in an outdoor passageway, and he later died at a hospital. Police at that point identified him as Dejean-Jones. He was 23.

According to an email that the apartment complex sent to its residents Saturday morning, the individual was "believed to be breaking into the apartment of an estranged acquaintance [but] inadvertently broke into the wrong apartment."

Dejean-Jones was visiting his girlfriend in Dallas for his daughter's first birthday, which was Saturday, according to Nichols. He said the girlfriend returned to the apartment first while Dejean-Jones went for a walk after they had gone out.

"He went to the wrong apartment unfortunately and I think he thought his girlfriend locked him out, so he was knocking on the door, banging on the door, it's locked,'' Nichols told the Associated Press. "So one thing led to another.''

Sources told ESPN that Dejean-Jones was involved in an argument with the child's mother before the shooting.

According to a report from the NBA's senior vice president and chief security officer that was sent to teams and obtained by ESPN, no charges have been filed against the apartment resident. Under Texas law, a person is allowed to use deadly force to defend themselves in their home. It also says a person using force cannot provoke the attacker or be involved in criminal activity at the time.

The NBA report obtained by ESPN also noted that a toxicology report is "a couple weeks" away, but it is "unknown at this time if a substance played a part in the incident." An update from the Dallas PD is expected Tuesday.

Dejean-Jones signed a three-year contract with the Pelicans in February after joining the team on consecutive 10-day contracts. He started 11 of 14 games before undergoing surgery for a broken right wrist and missing the rest of the season.

"It is with deep sadness that the Pelicans organization acknowledges the sudden passing of Bryce Dejean-Jones," the team said in a statement. "We are devastated at the loss of this young man's life who had such a promising future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce's family during this difficult time."

A native of Los Angeles, Dejean-Jones averaged 5.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 19.9 minutes over the 14 games last season.

"Bryce overcame a lot of obstacles to get to this point in his career," Nichols told ESPN's Justin Verrier. "He was a joy to be around, a talent just turning the corner in his career."

DALLAS (AP) — New Orleans Pelicans rookie Bryce Dejean-Jones was fatally shot after breaking down the door to a Dallas apartment, authorities said Saturday.

Officers were called early Saturday and found the 23-year-old player collapsed in an outdoor passageway, Senior Cpl. DeMarquis Black said in a statement. Dejean-Jones was taken to a hospital where he died.

A person living at the apartment was sleeping when he heard his front door kicked open, Black said. The man retrieved a handgun and fired when Dejean-Jones began kicking the bedroom door.

Dejean-Jones was from Los Angeles and it wasn't immediately clear why he was in Dallas.

"We are devastated at the loss of this young man's life (and) who had such a promising future ahead of him," the Pelicans said in a statement.

In his only NBA season, which ended in February because of a broken right wrist, the 6-foot-6 guard started 11 of 14 games and averaged 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds.

He was part of the 2014-15 Iowa State team that went 25-9, captured a Big 12 title and made a fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. He was fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.5 points in 33 games. He shot a career-best 47.6 percent in his lone season as a Cyclone. He also played at Southern California and UNLV.

"This is a very, very sad and tragic day for everyone that's a part of the Cyclone basketball family," Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said.

Former Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg added in a statement that Dejean-Jones was a "passionate and talented player that lived out his dream of playing in the NBA through hard work and perseverance."

Video After The Jump

Adrien Broner spoke exclusively to VladTV about his ongoing feud with Floyd Mayweather, and the famed boxer said that he was man enough to admit that he started their most recent beef by "saying some bullshit at a press conference. He then stated, "If I don't sell myself who the fuck is going to do it? You ain't going to do it."

During the conversation Adrien addressed the outcome of what he thinks would happen during a match-up between him and Floyd, and the Cincinnati native says he thinks the fight would be bigger than Mayweather's fight with Pacquiao. While Adrien says he's ready to fight Floyd, he says the retired boxer would never go through with it, because he claims Mayweather doesn't want to see him get paid.

To hear more of what Broner had to say, including how he felt when Floyd called him an alcoholic, hit the clip below.

Video After The Jump

There are times where rappers make it big and still return to their starting ground, and on the other hand, there are some rappers who decide to leave their hood to protect themselves from lingering problems. In this case, Boosie Badazz decided to leave Baton Rouge due to his legal issues with public officials, fear of getting set up by the police, and former friends who became envious of his success and—which he claims—are "hypnotized with hatred."

In this interview, Boosie explains how Louisiana pushed out some of their biggest stars like, Lil Wayne, Birdman, and Master P and explains his final decision to relocate in Atlanta.

From what started out as a hobby in the basement of his house to gaining a following and credible potential to make it big. it shows that all it takes is determination and smart plays.

At the age of 15 and up hitting up events and networking his brand (even if it meant going alone.) From getting turn down ....to a few others reaching back out and seeing the potential he had at such a young age (and that was from a beats stand point) He's gained a track record in the unsigned community of New York. He always had to ability to rap but felt it wasn't the right time to make that extra step. Now he feels it's the perfect time to show the world the full potential of his talent.
