CNN — Nine US servicemembers were killed after two helicopters with the 101st Airborne Division crashed in southwestern Kentucky on Wednesday, according to a US Army official. The source said there were no survivors.

The two HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters crashed around 10 p.m. Wednesday in Trigg County near the Tennessee border, officials at nearby Fort Campbell previously said.

Fort Campbell is expected to have a news conference at 10 a.m. ET.

Crewmembers were flying “during a routine training mission when the incident occurred,” the base said in a statement on Facebook.

Gov. Andy Beshear will travel to Fort Campbell to “support our troops and their families,” he said in a Thursday morning tweet.

Kentucky State Police got the call around 10:15 p.m. and rushed to an area with a field and woods, State Police Post 1 spokesperson Trooper Sarah Burgess said, adding “numerous agencies” were assisting.

No residential areas are affected, she said.

Fort Campbell personnel are “focused on caring for the servicemembers and their families,” its statement said.

“I am devastated to learn about the Army helicopter accident over Kentucky involving our brave 101st Airborne,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said in a statement on Twitter. “My team is in contact with the Army and authorities on the ground. Please pray for our servicemembers and their families as we learn more.”

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — A 16-month-old boy was fatally shot by his 5-year-old sibling at a northwestern Indiana apartment, authorities said.

The older sibling accessed a handgun inside the Lafayette apartment on Tuesday afternoon and fatally shot the boy, who was identified as Isiah Johnson, police said late Tuesday.

Lafayette police Lt. Matt Gard said someone outside of the apartment called 911 after the shooting to report that a child was not breathing.

“There was one adult and two children inside the apartment,” Gard told the Journal & Courier.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday to determine the child’s cause and manner of death.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning and the case remains under investigation, police said.

When the investigation is completed, officials said the case will be sent to the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office for review to determine if charges might be filed.

Lafayette is located about 60 miles north of Indianapolis

(CNN) — Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been arrested in Russia on suspicion of espionage, the first time a US journalist has been detained on accusations by Moscow of spying since the Cold War.

“The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation has stopped the illegal activities of US citizen Evan Gershkovich, born in 1991, a correspondent of the Moscow bureau of the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal,” Russia’s Federal Security Service, or FSB, said in a statement Thursday.

The FSB said Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg, on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains & claimed he was “trying to obtain secret information” relating to “the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.”

The FSB said the reporter, who is accredited by Russia’s foreign ministry, was “acting on the instructions of the American side” & “trying to obtain secret information.”

In a statement, the Wall Street Journal said it “vehemently denies the allegations from the FSB & seeks the immediate release of our trusted & dedicated reporter, Evan Gershkovich.”

His arrest marks a significant escalation of Russia’s campaign against Western media.

In a move by the United States last week, the Justice Department announced criminal charges against Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov, a Russian national who allegedly entered America under a fake identity & gathered intelligence ahead of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Black Californians are owed upward of $800 billion due to decades of discriminatory and racist practices that set back generations -- so say experts in a formal suggestion.

Gov. Gavin Newsom spearheaded efforts, starting in 2020, to determine what African-Americans might stand to receive if Cali decides to pay reparations & this astronomical number is what a group of economists is spitting out.

There's a whole task force dedicated to this issue, BTW ... consisting of state lawmakers focused on 5 key areas -- the taking of property by the government, devaluation of Black-owned businesses, housing discrimination, mass incarceration/over-policing & general health.

Mind you, the economists here considered only 3 of these categories in coming up with the $800B figure -- leaving out property taken and the devaluation of businesses for now -- which means the final estimate could be much higher. In any case, the task force will hear this new total Wednesday and take it under consideration in a scheduled meeting.

Considering there are about 2,537,000 Black residents in California -- based on 2022 U.S. Census numbers -- that would translate to each getting about $315k, more or less. That number could be different, however, based on criteria for who receives reparations.

Those would include being a certain age (18), being a resident of CA for a certain amount of time & being a descendant of an enslaved person and/or freed Black people in the U.S. as of the 19th century ... among other benchmarks, the state of California could set.

Of course, opponents would cite the obvious in pushing back on this -- namely, California was never a slave state. Also, they say taxpayers shouldn't have to foot this kind of bill for practices that were in place a long time ago ... even though Newsom & co. say otherwise.

Now, whether the reparations suggested are actually enacted is a whole other ball game. The task force would need to agree on a final number & then send it over to the state legislature ... where it would have to be drafted into a bill & passed in both chambers. After that, Newsom himself would have to sign it.

Another thing to consider ... this is separate from what SF is mulling -- its own proposed reparations package, which would see Black city residents get as much as $5 mil each.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is warning the American public of a sharp increase in the trafficking of fentanyl mixed with xylazine. Xylazine, also known as “Tranq,” is a powerful sedative that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved for veterinary use.

“Xylazine is making the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced, fentanyl, even deadlier,” said Administrator Milgram. “DEA has seized xylazine and fentanyl mixtures in 48 of 50 States. The DEA Laboratory System is reporting that in 2022 approximately 23% of fentanyl powder & 7% of fentanyl pills seized by the DEA contained xylazine.”

Xylazine & fentanyl drug mixtures place users at a higher risk of suffering a fatal drug poisoning. Because xylazine is not an opioid, Narcan does not reverse its effects. People who inject drug mixtures containing xylazine also can develop severe wounds, including necrosis—the rotting of human tissue—that may lead to amputation.

According to the CDC, 107,735 Americans died between August 2021 & August 2022 from drug poisonings, with 66 percent of those deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl. The Sinaloa Cartel & Jalisco Cartel in Mexico, using chemicals largely sourced from China, are primarily responsible for the vast majority of the fentanyl that is being trafficked in communities across the U.S.

Brittney Taylor of "Love & Hip Hop: New York" fame has been arrested ... after allegedly assaulting her kids' father with a baseball bat.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Brittney got into a physical altercation earlier this month with Afeez, father of her 2-year-old & 8-month-old. She turned herself in last week after a warrant was issued for her arrest.

The alleged beating came after Afeez flew to NY to see his kids, although he'd been keeping his distance due to some bad blood between him & Brittney.

As he & his mom were leaving the apartment with the kids, Brittney allegedly said something to him which he ignored & we're told that set her off.

Afeez told cops Brittney then punched him in the face while his kids were present. Afeez then left the residence, but cops say Brittney followed him out with the bat, hitting him & leaving him with a laceration & significant facial bleeding.

Docs say Afeez ended up going to the hospital, getting stitches for a cut above his eye. She's now been charged with 2 counts of assault, 1 count of endangering the welfare of a child & 1 count of criminal possession of a weapon.

Afeez recently made some claims on social media about getting assaulted, which got fans wondering if Brittney was involved. It sounds like this incident may be what he was referring to in the posts.

As we reported, Brittney's "LHH" costar Remy Ma was arrested & quickly bailed out back in 2019 for allegedly punching Brittney at a concert, but those charges were dropped. Now it appears the tables have turned, with Brittney accused of being the aggressor.

The Nashville shooter had an art page for their works, including one that's now giving people pause ... a rendition that highlights 'The Shining,' including 1 of its haunting refrains.

28-year-old Audrey Hale -- who identified as a man with he/him pronouns & who apparently started using the name Aiden of late -- was a graphic artist & illustrator & Hale's AH Illustrations website is now being pored over in the wake of the massacre.

Authorities ID'd Hale as the person who killed 6 people Monday, including 3 kids & 3 adults with an AR-15-style gun. A motive is unknown & Hale is dead now too.

Because of the inexplicable carnage ... folks are looking for answers anywhere they can -- including in Hale's artwork, which has gone under a microscope in the wake of the tragedy. One piece, in particular, has made some feel like Hale was telegraphing sinister intentions.

It's a digital drawing of Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance from Stanley Kubrick's famed 1980 horror flick ... the shot of him looking crazed as he stares out the window, specifically.

There's more to the disturbing creation, including the notorious phrase "REDRUM" ... which is "MURDER" spelled backward & which was heavily featured in the film. That phrase is prominently displayed in Hale's art, as are other quotes & phrases from 'The Shining.'

Video of Hale entering the school by shooting out a glass door, then roaming the halls weapon in hand, has since been released & it's clear Hale was on a mission to kill that day.

Jury selection in the federal trial of former Fugees rapper Pras Michel began Monday.

The rapper is accused of making 2012 campaign donations to groups backing then-President Barack Obama without disclosing that the money came from Malaysian billionaire Jho Low. Prosecutors allege that Low funneled more than $21 million to Michel, who in turn used straw donors to make the campaign donations to pro-Obama groups.

Prosecutors allege that the scheme continued into the Trump administration & that Michel used some of the money Low sent to fund a campaign aimed at stopping a DOJ investigation into Low’s alleged role in embezzling billions of dollars from a Malaysian wealth fund, 1MDB.

Attorneys read a list of more than 40 individuals who could be called to testify in the case.

The list also includes Trump allies such as Rudy Giuliani, Steve Bannon and Republican megadonor Steve Wynn as well as ex-government officials like former Attorney General Jeff Sessions & former national security adviser H.R. McMaster.

Defense lawyers listed individuals & companies that could be referred to in the trial, including celebrities Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Britney Spears, Martin Scorsese & Mark Wahlberg, activist Jesse Jackson, as well as a former prime minister of Malaysia, his wife & Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The possible witnesses listed above are not accused of wrongdoing.

Several people tied to the alleged plot have pleaded guilty to federal charges, including former Justice Department employee George Higginbotham, Republican fundraiser Elliott Broidy & Broidy’s business associate Nickie Lum Davis. Former President Donald Trump pardoned Broidy just before leaving office in January 2021.

If convicted, Michel could face decades in prison. Low, who was also indicted, remains at large & is believed to be in China.
