Video After The Jump (CBS) Girls fighting girls on tape is nothing new to the Internet. But, as CBS News Correspondent Jeff Glor reports, one video, of a particularly ugly fight, is grabbing lots of attention: The mother of one of the two teen battlers allegedly encouraged her daughter, and is facing criminal charges. The local sheriff says April Newcomb, 39, should instead have been trying to stop or prevent the fight, and she's been formally accused of child abuse.

The brutal brawl between 16-year-olds, in Palmetto, Fla., was apparently over a boy. Their names are being withheld due to their ages. Many in the cheering crowd came with cell phones, eager , Glor says, to post the video on the Web. Authorities say Newcomb can be seen in the background, and she can be heard trying to lend her daughter support. A spokesman for the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, Dave Bristow, said, "We're basically in shock (that) a parent can sit there and watch their child and not intervene. … It's pretty obvious this is child abuse." Police quote Newcomb as admitting in an interview that she was "wrong, and I understand where y'all are coming from. I think unfortunately it was going to happen no matter what." It appears Newcomb knew about the fight before it even began. She apparently can be seen walking to the scene with her daughter to confront the other girl. The fight lasted about three minutes.

If convicted, Newcomb faces up to five years in prison. She's free on $15,000 bail. Police say nobody was seriously hurt in the melee. Psychologist Dr. Jeff Gardere, a contributor to HealthGuru.com, told "Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez Newcomb's alleged behavior was "criminal. It was atrocious. It was absolutely stupid. And I think, at this point, she realizes what she did was wrong. She got caught up in the moment. "Good parenting does not dictate that you egg your child on. You work with your child on and teach them conflict resolution skills. "And, I have to point out, she was afraid her daughter might get hurt in the back of the head, because she had a previous head injury, and … she (was) being hit with rabbit punches in the back of the head several times. So this is absolutely horrific. " … The parenting was non-existent here. We've seen this before, where parents get caught up; they're living vicariously through their children. So I guess she wants her daughter to win because, in her own way, she's helping her daughter with her self-esteem. But it's absolutely the wrong thing. Maybe she wants herself to win to say she's got a champion on her hands. But it is absolutely atrocious." He was also sharply critical of the girls' school, Palmetto High School, for failing to take action after the fight. Source: CBS twitter-5d.gif

PHOENIX — The furor over Arizona’s new law cracking down on illegal immigrants grew Monday as opponents used refried beans to smear swastikas on the state Capitol, civil rights leaders demanded a boycott of the state and the Obama administration weighed a possible legal challenge.

Activists are planning a challenge of their own, hoping to block the law from taking effect by arguing that it encroaches on the federal government’s authority to regulate immigration and violates people’s constitutional rights by giving police too much power.

The measure — set to take effect in late July or early August — would make it a crime under state law to be in the U.S. illegally. It directs state and local police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal.

"If you look or sound foreign, you are going to be subjected to never-ending requests for police to confirm your identity and to confirm your citizenship," said Alessandra Soler Meetze, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, which is exploring legal action.

Employees at the Capitol came to work Monday to find that vandals had smeared swastikas on the windows. And protesters gathered for a second straight day to speak out against a law they say will lead to rampant racial profiling of anyone who looks Hispanic.

The White House would not rule out the possibility that the administration would take legal action against Arizona. President Barack Obama, who warned last week that the measure could lead to police abuses, asked the Justice Department to complete a review of the law’s implications before deciding how to proceed.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said the law is discriminatory and warned that trade and political ties with Arizona will be seriously strained by the crackdown.

Currently, many U.S. police departments do not ask about people’s immigration status unless they have run afoul of the law in some other way. Many departments say stopping and questioning people will only discourage immigrants from cooperating to solve crimes.

Under the new Arizona law, immigrants unable to produce documents showing they are allowed to be in the U.S. could be arrested, jailed for up to six months and fined $2,500. That is a significant escalation of the typical federal punishment for being here illegally — deportation.

People arrested by Arizona police would be turned over to federal immigration officers. Opponents said the federal government could thwart the law by refusing to accept them.

Supporters of the law said it is necessary to protect Arizonans from crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Arizona is home to an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants and is the nation’s busiest gateway for people slipping into the country.

Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, who signed the bill on Friday, said Arizona must act because Washington has failed to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs from Mexico. Brewer has ordered state officials to develop a training course for officers to learn what constitutes reasonable suspicion that someone is in the U.S. illegally.

The crux of opponents’ arguments is that only the federal government has the authority to regulate immigration.

"If every state had its own laws, we wouldn’t be one country; we’d be 50 different countries," said Thomas Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Kevin Johnson, dean of the law school at the University of California-Davis and an immigration law professor, said such a lawsuit would have a very good chance of success. He said the state law gets into legal trouble by giving local law enforcement officers the authority to enforce immigration laws.

"States can’t give them that power," Johnson said. "The federal government could if it wanted to, but it hasn’t."

However, Gerald Neuman, a Harvard Law School professor, said Arizona could make a compelling legal argument that it has overlapping authority to protect its residents.

Johnson said opponents could also argue that the law could violate their Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure because it gives police officers broad authority to determine who should be questioned.

Kris Kobach, a University of Missouri-Kansas City law professor who helped write the Arizona legislation, said he anticipated legal challenges and carefully drafted the language. He said the state law is only prohibiting conduct already illegal under federal law.

In a statement Friday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the state’s new law would probably hinder law enforcement in dealing with more serious crimes. Napolitano vetoed similar proposals when she was Arizona governor.

"They would have diverted critical law enforcement resources from the most serious threats to public safety and undermined the vital trust between local jurisdictions and the communities they serve," she said.

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera urged policymakers in the city to stop dealing with Arizona and Arizona businesses. Leaders in Mexico and California also demanded a boycott, as did civil rights leader Al Sharpton.

The law has strong public support in Arizona, where passions have been running high since a rancher was killed close to the Mexican border last month, apparently by drug smugglers from across the border.

NY Daily News Reports Sam Jones III will need a lot more help than Superman can offer him. The "Smallville" star, who played Clark Kent's best friend on the CW show, was arrested Wednesday morning in a federal drug sting, TMZ.com reported. The Drug Enforcement Agency said Jones was accused of being a "co-conspirator" in several major drug deals last year. According to court documents, the actor and several others devised a plan to purchase and distribute more than 10,000 oxycodone pills. Jones was reportedly taken into custody by DEA agents who described him as the "Hollywood connection" to the plot. The 26-year-old actor has been charged with conspiracy to possess illegal drugs with the intent to distribute. If convicted, Jones faces up to 20 years in federal prison.

The Lying Down Game: players try to outdo each other by lying down in the most original locations Times Online Reports Seven staff from a hospital’s accident and emergency unit have been suspended after taking part in an internet craze known as the “Lying Down Game". Participants have to post photographs of themselves lying face down arms by their sides in unlikely situations. The doctors and nurses who were working an overnight shift on August 14 and August 15 took turns to be photographed on resuscitation trolleys, ward floors and the hospital’s heli-pad. The photographs were put on a Facebook page set up by A&E staff at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, Wiltshire. They were suspended after management were alerted to the prank and now fear they could lose their jobs.

The Lying Down Game described as “parkour for those who can’t be arsed” became an international craze earlier this summer when pictures were published of participants lying on ironing boards, cars, mountain tops and even a life size statue of a grizzly bear. An employee at the Great Western Hospital today described the suspensions as a ”nightmare” for those involved. He said: ”The person who started it is really worried. It reflects badly on the department and some people may lose their jobs. “It was just some nurses and doctors on nights having fun, but photos got onto Facebook and management found out. Someone in the department leaked the group, but no-one knows who. Health and safety and infection control issues have all been broken. “I think it’ll be serious for the one who set up the Facebook group and took the photos and I’m really glad I didn’t get involved.” The stunt involved a total of 18 A&E and Acute Assessment Unit staff. Seven of the group have been suspended on full pay and will now face formal disciplinary hearings. The photographs were posted on Facebook by a group calling itself the Secret Swindon Emergency Department Group. It has since been removed by the website. A spokesman for GWH confirmed that health and safety and infection control regulations had been broken as well as the NHS and Trust code of conduct.

He refused to rule out sackings and said: ”The disciplinary hearings are yet to take place and we cannot predict the outcome.” Dr Alf Troughton, medical director for Great Western Hospital NHS Trust, confirmed the suspensions but said that patient care had not been affected. He said: ”A number of staff were suspended following allegations of unprofessional conduct while on night shift duty in the hospital during a weekend in August. “This did not involve patients and we are satisfied that at no time was patient care compromised. “The Great Western Hospital sets high standards for staff behaviour at all times and therefore takes any such breaches extremely seriously. “It is important to reassure patients and our workforce that this was an isolated incident and staff cover was maintained at all times. “The allegations have been thoroughly investigated and seven members of staff remain suspended pending formal disciplinary hearings.” The Facebook page for the Lying Down Game claims to have more than 54,000 members worldwide. It describes itself as a group for all those who “enjoy the sport of lying down in random public places to confuse people”.

It adds: “The originators of the Lying Down Game cannot be held liable for any accidents, injuries or criminal proceedings resulting from participating in the Game.” Simon Newell, a spokesman for the union UNISON represents nearly 250,000 nurses, yesterday urged the Swindon health trust to ”consider past service” before dismissing any of the staff involved. He said: ”We wouldn’t condone unprofessional conduct in any work place environment, although we do acknowledge that staff in hospitals constantly work under a great deal of pressure and scrutiny. “This sort of incident is unfortunate but rare. We are led to believe that a number of codes may have been breached, although we also understand that at no time patients’ safety or healthcare was directly compromised. “That being the case, we would urge the Trust, when deciding upon the future of these highly skilled staff, to consider recent events within the context of the good services these staff have provided in the past.”
