MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A southern Minnesota school district is expected to vote Monday on a $1.1 million state grant meant to help curb drug use among students of color after a pair of board members delayed accepting the money by arguing it could discriminate against white students.

At least 5 members of the 7-person Faribault school board say they will vote in favor of accepting the funding when it comes to a vote Monday evening. In November, 4 of the board’s members had been deadlocked in a vote after 2 members argued that programs specifically for students of color were unfair to white students.

“Would we ever go after a grant that only targeted whites with hopes that it would trickle down to our BIPOC community? Would we do the opposite? And I don’t think we would,” Board Member LeeAnn Lechtenberg said at the meeting.

She, along with Board Member Richard Olson voted against the program.

The district serves Faribault, a city of 24,000 people. About 73% of the city is white, but it also has significant Latino & Black populations, including a Somali American community. More than 60% of the school district’s students are people of color.

A mother from the Somali community approached the school board last summer with concerns about drug use among youth in her community & the district applied for a $1.1 million grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services to curb drug use among Black, Indigenous & other students of color.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kyrie Irving is making sure WNBA players can sit out the season and not stress about a paycheck.

The Brooklyn Nets star is committing $1.5 million to supplement the income of players who choose not to play this season, whether it be because of coronavirus concerns or social justice reasons.

The funds will come from the KAI Empowerment Initiative that Irving launched Monday. It will also provide players with a financial literacy program created by UBS.

Irving said that with the help of WNBA players Natasha Cloud — who chose to sit out — and Jewell Loyd, he connected with several WNBA players who discussed with him the challenges they faced in deciding whether to play. The season began Saturday and will be played entirely at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

He decided to help with the financial burden in a league where the top annual salary is a little more than $200,000.

“Whether a person decided to fight for social justice, play basketball, focus on physical or mental health, or simply connect with their families, this initiative can hopefully support their priorities and decisions,” Irving said in a statement.

Players such as Cloud and Atlanta’s Renee Montgomery opted against playing for social reform reasons, though it’s unclear how many will qualify for Irving’s program.

To be eligible, players must provide insight into the circumstances surrounding their decision and not be receiving salary support from any other entity. An opt-out for medical reasons must be connected to the coronavirus pandemic.

Players can get information at www.kaiempowermentinitiative.com. They need to apply by Aug. 11 and recipients will be notified on Aug. 24.

Irving is not with the Nets for the restart of the NBA season as he recovers from shoulder surgery. He has been outspoken about social justice issues and recently produced a TV special calling for action in the death of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old Black emergency medical technician who was shot eight times in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 13 by plainclothes officers serving a narcotics search warrant without knocking at her apartment. No drugs were found.

WNBA players wore Taylor’s name on their jerseys during opening weekend.

Taboshous decided to do something for herself. She started a book Called LET IT OUT then I decided to do something better to bring it out in Song since I love to sing with little help from a producer to bring the song out more his name is Antwan Pixley From Heroic Magazine and the song is called let It Out. “It's my story.” but it's just not my story it's anyone’s story who are afraid to speak out about sexual abuse it took me awhile to finish the song because it was so real for me living it all over again but I got through it. The producers believed in me and said you can do it and I finished it and I'm so proud of myself my accomplishment and there's more to come also I will be working with Trouble Funk the pioneers of go-go Out of Washington DC in the near future so I want people to know there's more to Taboshous Rochester.

FAST FACTS:
*Approximately 90 students at Frayser High School are pregnant or have recently given birth

*The startling numbers fall in line with high teen pregnancy rates in the entire Frayser community

*A new initiative to help combat the problem will soon be introduced

About 90 students at a Memphis High School are either pregnant, or have been recently.

The startling news was confirmed by a high ranking city official and comes as the community plans to roll out a new initiative to help combat the problem.

However, one Frayser High School graduate says teen pregnancy is not a new problem for the school.

"When we would come back from summer break, there would be a thousand people pregnant. We were like, what's going on?" joked Alicia Williamson, who graduated from Frayser in 2004.

"There were a whole lot of bellies. You had to watch out so you didn't bump into them. Being 2011, I thought a lot of them would have thought this is not the right way to go, having babies during school time," she added.

The organization, Girls, Inc. teaches girls about preventing pregnancy.

Deborah Hester Harrison, who heads the organization, says Memphis' teen pregnancy rate stands at between 15 and 20 percent, almost twice the national average.

In the Frayser zip code, the rate is about 26 percent. Harrison partly blames the media.

"So much of our society is sexually oriented. As adults we can look at that and it doesn't impact us, but kids are different," Harrison said.

It's why Girls, Inc. offers classes where teenage girls "care for" computerized babies to give them a feel for what teenage parenthood is like.

The organization will also be part of a new initiative tentatively scheduled to be introduced next week.
