Video After The Jump Philadelphia's legendary Roots band and R&B crooner, John Legend have teamed up to drop a new album titled "Wake Up". This is the second video off of the project, following "Wake Up Everybody" which features Common and Melanie Fiona. At first I thought this would be a remake of Dr Dre's "Lil Ghetto Boy", and although John does borrow a line from that classic, he and The Roots have created something altogether different. Something very jazzy and soulful. Their project drops September 21.

Video After The Jump On the evening of Sept. 7, 1996, Mike Tyson, the WBC heavyweight champion, attempted to take Bruce Seldon’s WBA title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. At this point in his career, Tyson’s fights had become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, where the ever present hype of the professional boxing scene would come face to face with the worlds of big business, Hollywood, and hip hop. Sitting ringside was controversial rapper Tupac Shakur. Shakur and Tyson were friends, a feeling of kinship linked them as each rose to stardom from poverty only to be thrown in prison. Following Tyson’s victory, Shakur and “Iron Mike” were to celebrate at an after party, but the rap star never arrived. Shakur was brutally gunned down later that night, and the scene in Las Vegas quickly turned from would-be celebratory revelry to ill fated and inopportune tragedy. Director Reggie Bythewood, with the full cooperation of Mike Tyson, will tell not only the story of that infamous night but of the remarkable friendship between Tyson and Tupac ESPN twitter-5d.gif

Jay-Z has topped a list of the world's richest rappers, beating Sean 'Diddy' Combs in a list from US magazine Forbes. The Empire State Of Mind rapper made $63 million (£40 million) in personal income between June 2009 and June 2010. Diddy made less than half that with $30 million (£19 million). Akon came third followed by Lil Wayne and Dr Dre. Big income Jay-Z's income was no doubt boosted by the release of his album The Blueprint III and a number of high profile live gigs including headline slots at Isle Of Wight and Wireless in the UK. Lil Wayne - real name Dwayne Carter - still managed to earn $20 (£13 million) despite beginning a jail sentence in March for weapons charges. Forbes noted that all the highest earning names on the list had "diverse" business interests outside of music - including alcohol sponsorships, clothing lines and film appearances. Perhaps most surprisingly Eminem came joint 14th in the list despite his most recent album Recovery selling 741,000 copies in its first week. The Detroit rapper earned $8 million (£5 million). Zack O'Malley Greenburg, the writer who compiled the list, said: "It's pretty shocking to see him so low down on the list. Compared to his peers, he doesn't really do much outside of music." The full list of the list's top 20 is as follows: 1. Jay-Z – $63 million 2. Diddy – $30 million 3. Akon – $21 million 4. Lil Wayne – $20 million 5. Dr. Dre – $17 million 6. Ludacris – $16 million 7. Snoop Dogg – $15 million 8. Timbaland – $14 million 9. Pharrell – $13 million 10. Kanye West – $12 million 11. Drake – $9 million 11. T.I. – $ 9 million 12. Swizz Beatz – $9 million 14. Eminem – $8 million 14.50 Cent – $8 million 14. Young Jeezy – $8 million 17. Common – $7 million 18. Soulja Boy – $7 million 18. T-Pain – $7 million 20. Lil Jon – $5 million 20. Gucci Mane – $5 million 20. Rick Ross – $5 million Source: BBC twitter-2a.png

Don't expect rapper Joe Budden and NBA player Glen "Big Baby" Davis to hang out with each other anytime soon. The two went at it on Twitter yesterday (August 17), with Budden practically calling Davis every foul name in the book because of his youtube video, where he does a feminine version of the "Teach Me How To Dougie" dance. It all started with Joe talking about the video and posting a link to it. "lets revisit the Glen Davis shit, mind u, he's home ALONE !!!! smmfh .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIz80L9eJhA." "can any Celtic fan or NBA player defend this buffoonery ??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIz80L9eJhA." Davis caught wind of Joe's dissing him and started to fire back. "Tell Joe burdens !!! I don't play with trash , I take it outside !!! Plus he's broke has hell!! I think his fans forgot about him!!" "Plus when the last time he made a hit cd or song !! Come on homes you Got to do better!!! Ayo baby ps don't worry about me, just do you." From there, they start going back and forth. Big Baby tries to fire some comebacks, but Budden was on a roll. BUDDEN "hey @iambigbaby11 , shut your faggot ass up ... ol' "i love boxing niggaz out" ass nigga" "hey @iambigbaby11 keep it 100 .... u asked 4 your championship ring in pink, right ??" It only takes one listen to Eminem's latest album, to see that the 37 year old mc is at a good place in his life. He's kicked a lot of old bad habits and it shows in his music. 'Recovery' just reached double platinum status and it probably has a lot to do with two things. He has a very loyal fan base and also because his subject material is not rehashed from past albums. Em doesn't take his normal shots at annoying pop stars like Britney Spears on this disc. One diva in particular he chose to ignore has been a thorn in his side for a while, but Slim tells Vibe he's off that now. There won't be any more Mariah Carey disses coming. "You know what? I got to be honest. I really don’t want to talk about her anymore only just because it’s kind of like the last thing I said about her was on “Cold Wind Blows.” I made the comment. (9) I don’t want to keep beating a dead horse. I’m not even going to comment about it. I’m done with that whole situation. I said what I had to say. I’m done." twitter-2a.png

Kanye West is know for making bold statements. Just the other say he said he thought Nicki Minaj could wind up being the #2 rapper of all time behind Eminem. Since throwing that one out there, Yeezy decided today to make another bold statement. This time he is proclaiming Swizz Beatz to be the best rap producer of all time via his Twitter account. "Listening to "Fancy" ... This is a big statement but Swizz Beats may be the best rap producer of all time... fuck that... he is" "He's original... He's modern... he lives this shit for real... he is rap... Yall gone see though... This Swizz year... Yall gone see"

First of all, no disrespect to Swizzy, dude makes great music and has been for a long time. And no disrespect to Kanye, because the man is entitled to his own opinon and there's no question he knows great music. But the best rap producer of all time? What about Dr Dre, Timbaland, RZA, DJ Premier, J Dilla, anybody? Follow Me @ChasinMoPaper

Video After The Jump

The 2010 'Paid Dues' Festival was a success by all accounts and of course being in San Bernardino, CA had quite a few West Coast artists on the bill.

One noticeable absence was Watts rapper, Jay Rock.

Rapper Murs, who put together the festival along with Guerilla Union talked to Shade 45's Angela Yee about Jay Rock's absence.

"There was some fear on the part of other rappers that there might be something [beef] happening," Murs tells Angela. "When certain artists [Ice Cube] come and you have to provide a certain amount of security for them [and] they are already in fear of what's gonna happen and you invite the person [Jay Rock] they may be in fear of, then he might not perform and I can't have that."

"I don't know Cube, I respect him, he's not a friend, but I know [Jay Rock's} Top Dawg [Entertainment] and that was hard. I had to make a businessman decision. It was mainly my business partner that kept pushing me in that direction cause I was like 'f*ck it I don't give a.....'. But then for somebody [Ice Cube] to get on stage and talk sh*t about the New West. I'm like why would you do that? We're young kids who respect you. I'm paying you to come out, but maybe he wasn't talking to me, maybe he wasn't talking to Jay Rock."

For those that might not be familiar with the Ice Cube vs Jay Rock situation let me break it down. A lot of of the younger West Coast artists like Glasses Malone, Bishop Lamont and several others have alluded to the fact that they feel like older, more established artists out West weren't giving them a helping hand.

Although, he didn't name anyone specifically, Ice Cube sent a message out to the New West via his blog.

"They're just mad cause I don't fuck with they wack-ass. They ain't on my level, why should I waste my time. I don't even remember ever meeting these clowns or even being in the same room with any of 'em. They can't make a name for themselves so they need help from the O/G's. I refuse the throw'em a life line. Fuck'em. It ain't my job to make nobody famous. And for the record, I ain't scared of no nigga. Especially, no rappers....seriously people."

Jay Rock read that, and being a new West Coast artist felt some type of way and spoke on it saying Cube should say names.

Since that point there's been kind of a beef bubbling underneath the surface. Which I guess culminated with Cube not wanting Jay Rock at the Paid Dues festival.

Murs also added that the New West just needs to keep doing their own thing. "If Dre won't put us on Detox, so f*cking what."

Personally, I think the West should try to unify. A lot of great music could come from that. But if they beef, keep it on wax and out of the streets.
