FORT HOOD (CBSDFW.COM) – “We were told sexual harassment isn’t illegal. Well guess what — we have a dead person because of sexual harassment.”

Powerful words spoken by Attorney Natalie Kahwam on behalf of the family of missing Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillén laid the ground work for an emotional outcry for justice in the nation’s capital.

While the medical examiner still has not confirmed that partial human remains found near the Leon River in Bell County are Army Pfc. Guillén, her sisters say “everything points to it being her.”

The 20-year-old’s family drove to Washington, D.C. from Texas to demand a Congressional investigation into her disappearance and their assertion that she was sexually assaulted, and ultimately killed by her superior.

That man, fatally shot himself when authorities approached him this week. One of Guillén’s sisters spoke to him before his death, and said he was dismissive and “laughed in her face.”

“They lied to our faces every single day that passed for more than two months. My sister was sexually harassed and no one cared. My sister is a human too. If this can happen to my sister it can happen to anyone else. She deserves justice!” said Vanessa’s sister, Lupe.

The family also alleges the base is covering up for the other two suspects, both of which are currently in custody.

“They falsely accounted for her at 3 p.m. the day she disappeared,” said Kahwam. “What is the cover up for? She was a soldier. Why aren’t they transparent with the family? This was mishandled from the start. It has to be investigated.”

Calling command at Fort Hood evasive and even making claims that human trafficking has happened on base, Kahwam said one of the men involved walked in and watched Guillén while she was taking a shower.

“Imagine you lose your daughter and you’re finding out information from the media? The command doesn’t feel they owe this family anything. They’re savages! They’re dishonorable,” said Kahwam.

The Aurora police department says it’s “ashamed” of photos showing three officers mocking the death of Elijah McClain. Two officers in the photos were fired, the third resigned and a fourth officer was fired after responding “haha” to the pictures in a group text.

Jaron Jones, in the center of the photos, resigned before he was fired. His record will show that he was going to be terminated and he will not be allowed to be a police officer anywhere in the state of Colorado. He was pictured with Erica Marrero and Kyle Dittrich.

According to APD's internal review, Dittrich shared the photos via text message to two officers. One officer received them and had no response. The other, Jason Rosenblatt responded with "HaHa."

Rosenblatt was also fired Friday. He was involved in the initial encounter with Elijah McClain in August.

"He’s being fired for his lack and utter inability to do the right thing here," Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson said. "To say 'ha ha' when he was engaged in the incident with Elijah McClain is absolutely unacceptable.”

The interim chief says the photos were taken on October 20, 2019 at the site of a memorial for McClain. The 23-year-old was stopped by officers while walking home from a convenience store months before. He was not armed and did not stop when officers told him to. The officers used a chokehold on him and paramedics injected him with a sedative. McClain died several days after the encounter.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville’s mayor said Friday that one of three police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor will be fired.

Mayor Greg Fischer said interim Louisville police Chief Robert Schroeder has started termination proceedings for Officer Brett Hankison. Two other officers remain on administrative reassignment while the shooting is investigated.

Fischer said officials could not answer questions about the firing because of state law. He referred all questions to the Jefferson County attorney’s office.

Taylor, who was black, was shot eight times by officers who burst into her Louisville home using a no-knock warrant during a March 13 narcotics investigation. No drugs were found at her home.

A letter the chief sent to Hankison said the officer violated standard operating procedures when he “wantonly and blindly fired 10 rounds into the apartment of Breonna Taylor.”

The letter says he fired the rounds “without supporting facts” that the deadly force was directed at a person posing an immediate threat.

“In fact, the 10 rounds you fired were into a patio door and window which were covered with material that completely prevented you from verifying any person as an immediate threat or more importantly any innocent persons present,” the letter states.

“I find your conduct a shock to the conscience,” Schroeder said in the letter. “Your actions have brought discredit upon yourself and the Department.”

Sam Aguiar, an attorney for Taylor’s family said the move was overdue.

“It’s about damn time. It should have happened a long time ago, but thankfully it’s at least happening now,” Aguiar said.

(CNN) One of the four former Minneapolis police officers awaiting trial in the death of George Floyd has been released on $750,000 bond.

Thomas Lane, 37, was released Wednesday afternoon from the Hennepin County jail, the facility's website reads.

Lane was one of four officers involved in arresting Floyd on Memorial Day on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill. The arrest led to Floyd's death, which has sparked global protests against racial injustice and police misconduct.

Bystander video shows then-Officer Derek Chauvin pressing his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes as Floyd was on the ground outside a police vehicle.

Lane and another officer held down other parts of Floyd's body, next to Chauvin, authorities said in a probable cause statement.

Floyd, after repeatedly saying he couldn't breathe, became unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder. Lane and the two other officers on the scene -- Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng -- have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
Lane's attorney has said Lane, while Chauvin was pressing on Floyd's neck, suggested more than once that they roll the Floyd to his side, but Chauvin declined.

"I am worried about excited delirium or whatever," Lane said, according to authorities' probable cause statement. "That's why we have him on his stomach," Chauvin replied, according to the document.

Lane had been on the police force for four days when Floyd died and was "doing everything he thought he was supposed to do as a four-day police officer," his attorney, Earl Gray, told CNN this week.

The Hennepin County medical examiner's office concluded the manner of Floyd's death was homicide and that the cause was "cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression." Cardiopulmonary arrest means Floyd's heart failed.

A different autopsy, conducted by experts hired by Floyd's family, concluded Floyd died of "asphyxiation from sustained pressure" when his neck and back were compressed. The pressure cut off blood flow to his brain, that autopsy determined.

Video After The Jump

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Fires burned and looters struck Thursday after violent protests over the death of a black man in police custody rocked Minneapolis for a second straight night, with damage stretching for miles across the city.

Amid the violence, a man was found fatally shot Wednesday night near a pawn shop. Asked to confirm reports that he had been shot by a store owner, police spokesman John Elder said that was “one of the theories.”

Protesters began gathering in the early afternoon Wednesday near the city’s 3rd Precinct station, in the southern part of the city where 46-year-old George Floyd died on Memorial Day after an officer knelt on his neck until he became unresponsive. Protesters skirmished with officers, who fired rubber bullets and tear gas in a repeat of Tuesday night’s confrontation.

On Thursday morning, smoke hung over Minneapolis and looters carried merchandise from a damaged Target store with no interference by police. Video of the store’s interior showed empty clothing racks and shelves and debris strewn about. Obscenities were spray painted on the exterior of the store.

Protests spread to other U.S. cities. In California, hundreds of people protesting Floyd’s death blocked a Los Angeles freeway and shattered windows of California Highway Patrol cruisers on Wednesday.

It was the second night of violent protest in Minneapolis since the death of Floyd, whom police were seeking to arrest outside a Minneapolis grocery store on a report of a counterfeit bill being passed. A bystander’s cellphone video showed an officer kneeling on Floyd ’s neck for almost eight minutes as he eventually became unresponsive.

Mayor Jacob Frey tweeted for calm early Thursday. “Please, Minneapolis, we cannot let tragedy beget more tragedy,” he said on Twitter. He also asked for the public’s help in keeping the peace.

The officer and three others were fired Tuesday, and on Wednesday, Frey called for him to be criminally charged.

Frey asked Gov. Tim Walz to activate the National Guard, a spokesman confirmed Thursday. The governor’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Walz tweeted for calm Wednesday night, calling the violence “an extremely dangerous situation” and urging people to leave the scene.

On Wednesday night, officers responding to a reported stabbing near the protests found a man lying on the sidewalk with what turned out to be a bullet wound, Elder said. The man was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Elder said a suspect was in custody but said the facts leading up to the shooting were “still being sorted out.”

The Atlanta police officers involved in the violent arrest and tasing of 2 black college students who were in their vehicle during protests this weekend are now facing charges ... on the heels of 2 of them losing their jobs.

The Fulton County DA has charged 6 cops for using excessive force during the incident with Messiah Young and Taniyah Pilgrim Saturday night.

Four of the cops have been charged with aggravated assault -- Mark Gardner, for tasing Pilgrim; Ivory Streeter, for tasing Young and pointing a gun at him; Lonnie Hood for using a Taser on Pilgrim and Young; and Willie Sauls for pointing a Taser.

Another officer, Armond Jones, has been charged with aggravated battery for forcefully throwing Young down on the street and pointing a gun at him. The sixth officer, Roland Claud, is charged with criminal damage to property ... the couples' car.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms fired both Gardner and Streeter almost immediately after learning of the incident, and the other 4 were placed on desk duty.

The students claim they were out getting food when they got caught in traffic and the chaos around them. They later spoke about the scary ordeal, saying they felt lucky to be alive ... and demanded change so similar incidents stop happening.
