SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia judge denied bond Friday for the father and son charged with murder in the slaying of Ahmaud Arbery, saying he’s concerned the white men took the law into their own hands and endangered neighbors when they pursued and shot the Black man on a residential street.
Travis McMichael and his father, Gregory McMichael, have been jailed since their arrests in May, more than two months after Arbery was slain. The McMichaels armed themselves and chased 25-year-old Arbery in a truck after they spotted him running in their neighborhood.
During two days of courtroom testimony and legal arguments, Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley heard conflicting accounts of the Feb. 23 shooting just outside the port city of Brunswick, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) south of Savannah.
Defense attorneys for the McMichaels argued that they were legally justified to go after Arbery because they suspected he was a burglar. They also contended Travis McMichael was defending himself when he blasted Arbery three times with a shotgun.
Cellphone video of the shooting shows Arbery trying to run around the McMichaels’ pickup truck. Arbery comes face-to-face with Travis McMichael in front of the truck. The video shows Arbery punching him and grappling for the gun in between gunshots. Arbery finally staggers and falls after the third gunshot hits him at point-blank range.
Prosecutors say Arbery was no criminal but merely out jogging and the McMichaels acted as “vigilantes” motived by racist views. They showed the judge photos of a home near the shooting scene that was damaged by gunfire.
“You can interpret the video in a number of different ways,” Walmsley said Friday from the courthouse in Brunswick as the hearing was streamed live online. “But the video tells me there’s a significant risk and danger to the community.”
The judge also agreed with prosecutors that Gregory McMichael not only appeared “willing to place the law in his own hands” by chasing Arbery without first calling 911, but also seemed to try to influence investigators who arrived after the shooting.
Police body camera video played in court showed Gregory McMichael, 64, telling police he’s a former law enforcement officer and “I know what you guys do.” He also tells them Arbery is suspected of break-ins during ”frequent trips to the neighborhood.”
“Possibly it’s one of the reasons this case took so long to get where it is right now,” Walmsley said, apparently referring to the two-month delay between the shooting and the McMichaels’ arrests.
Questions about whether racism played a role in the killing sharpened during a June hearing when an investigator testified that a third defendant, a neighbor who joined the pursuit and took the cellphone video, told authorities he heard Travis McMichael, 34, utter a racial slur after shooting Arbery.
In court Thursday, prosecutor Jesse Evans read a message Travis McMichael posted on Facebook that used an offensive term for Asians, as well as a text message he sent last year to a friend that used a slur for Black people when referring to a “crackhead ... with gold teeth.”

Kobe Bryant is still a titan of industry -- even in death -- so says Forbes which just ranked him #6 on its "Highest-Paid Dead Celebrities of 2020" list.
The NBA legend passed away on Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash -- but in the months that followed, his estate pulled in an estimated $20 million in earnings, Forbes says.
The main source of income is from shoes and apparel -- with Nike reportedly raking in around $250 mil annually from Mamba items.
In addition to sneakers, Kobe's 2018 autobiography, "The Mamba Mentality: How I Play" sold more than 300,000 copies this year --TEN TIMES the number of copies it did in 2019, Forbes says.
There's more ... after the Lakers won the NBA championship in October, Bryant's jersey was the #2 seller for the organization, behind Finals MVP LeBron James.
As for the rest of the Forbes list ... Michael Jackson is still #1 with $48 mil in earnings in 2020. Dr. Seuss is #2 with $33 mil. Peanuts creator Charles Schulz is #3 with $32.5. Arnold Palmer is #4 with $25 million. And #5 is Elvis with $23 mil.
Elvis' estate has lost a ton of money this year because of the COVID pandemic -- tourism at his legendary home Graceland is a big moneymaker, but it's been hit hard by the shutdowns.
Unfortunately, there's another newcomer to the "Dead Celebs" list -- rapper Juice WRLD, who died back in Dec. 2019 at only 21. Forbes says his music sales spiked after his death, helping the estate bring in $15 mil.

"They put that money up, hell yeah I'll go over there and fight him!"
That's boxing superstar Terence Crawford -- arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world -- telling TMZ Sports he would seriously consider an MMA match with Conor McGregor.
So, why would the undefeated welterweight champ cross over into Conor's sport? Easy ...
Turns out, Crawford comes from a family of wrestlers and has some legit wrestling experience himself. He's very confident in his skills.
Plus, he doesn't think Conor's that big of a threat on the ground anyway!
"To keep it real, Conor's not a real good wrestler. He may kick the sh*t out of you. You gotta worry about them kicks to the head and them elbows more than him grabbing you."
"It'd be other things that you'd be having to worry about other than wrestling you."
Of course, if Conor wanted to stand up and turn it into a fistfight, the undefeated Crawford believes it would be a slaughter.
There's been talk about a possible Crawford vs. McGregor match for a while -- but Terence says he's seriously open to it.
"Conor is a big talent in the octagon and I'm a big talent in the boxing ring. Money talks. They put that money up, hell yeah I'll go over there and fight him!"
In the meantime, Crawford has a big fight coming up on Saturday -- taking on former champ Kell Brook in a WBO welterweight title bout.
Crawford is a huge favorite -- but we spoke with Kell, and he ain't about to roll over.
34-year-old Brook is 39 and 2 as a pro -- with a win over Shawn Porter in 2014.
In fact, his only 2 losses were to some pretty great fighters -- Gennady Golovkin and Errol Spence.

J.Maurice drops the sexiest and hottest video of 2020 titled "You Got It". Check it out below and follow him on social media for his latest releases.
AP - With a COVID-19 vaccine drawing closer, public health officials across the country are gearing up for the biggest vaccination effort in U.S. history — a monumental undertaking that must distribute hundreds of millions of doses, prioritize who’s first in line and ensure that people who get the initial shot return for the necessary second one.
The push could begin as early as next month, when federal officials say the first vaccine may be authorized for emergency use and immediately deployed to high-risk groups, such as health care workers.
“The cavalry is coming,” Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He said he hopes shots will be available to all Americans in April, May and June.
Pfizer also boosted hopes this week, saying early data suggests its vaccine is 90% effective. But the good news came in one of the grimmest weeks of the pandemic so far. Deaths, hospitalizations and new infections are surging across the U.S. — and turning up the pressure to get the vaccine effort right.
In Philadelphia, the health department is counting how many health care workers and others would be among the first in line. In Louisiana, officials are planning a remote exercise this week to play out different scenarios exploring how the process might unfold.
“If you get 10,000 doses, what are you going to do, versus 100,000 doses?” said Dr. Frank Welch, director of Louisiana’s immunization program.
State and local officials are also planning for the likelihood that the first shipments will not be enough to cover everyone in high-priority groups.
Similar preparations are happening at the federal level. Welch listened in last week on a “war gaming” session by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
For the vaccination effort to get off the ground, state officials have been readying systems to track supplies and who has been vaccinated. That information will be fed into a national network and will be critical in giving federal health officials an up-to-date picture of vaccinations around the country.
Providers such as pharmacies and doctors’ offices will also need to be able to look up records, so people do not have to return to the same place for their second shot. More than one vaccine could also become available, and doses cannot be mixed and matched.
“We not only have to bring people back for a second dose, but need to make sure that we have very good records of which vaccine they received the first time,” said Dr. Jinlene Chan of Maryland’s health department.

Kayla B, King Von’s sister, accused an employee of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s mortuary of leaking a photo of her brother’s autopsy.
King Von, whose real name was Dayvon Daquan Bennett, was shot outside of an Atlanta nightclub at 3:20 a.m. on November 6. Investigators believe that the shooting was the result of an argument between two groups of men. The shooting involved police officers. King Von was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was 26 years old.
Kayla B made the Instagram post on the morning of November 12. The True Boutique owner said in the post:
"This sick mfer that posted my brother pictures!!! He work at the airport mortuary. His whole job know he did the shit but they trna protect him!!! We need him fired now!!!!"
Heavy has reached out to Kayla B and to the man mentioned in her Instagram post for further comment on the allegations. Kayla B did not say in her post how she identified the person responsible. Among those who commented on the post was King Von’s cousin, professional basketball player Jerome Randle, who said, “Goofy ass.” The man named by Kayla B refers to himself as “Your fav funeral professional” on his Instagram page. The man has not updated that page since 2019. At the time of writing, his Facebook page has been removed.
Among those outraged by the leaking of King Von’s autopsy photos was Love & Hip Hop star Masika Kalysha. Kalysha tweeted about the leak saying, “What an evil sick fk u have to be to take autopsy photos of a deceased man…then to actually post them…that man got a family! How disrespectful. Smfh I hope they throw yo a** in jail and lock away the key. Smh I’m so sick of people.”
On November 7, a man named Timothy Leeks, 22, was arrested in relation to King Von’s murder. Numerous blogs have named Leeks as an associate of rapper Quando Rondo, whose real name is Tyquian Terrel Bowman 21, of Savannah, Georgia. ABC News reports that Lees was also wounded during the incident.
