CANARSIE, Brooklyn (WABC) -- An off-duty NYPD officer shot a man who allegedly tried to carjack him at gunpoint in Brooklyn, according to police.
Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison said the officer had left work and was on his way home when the 26-year-old suspect tapped on his window with a gun at Foster Avenue and East 87th Street in Canarsie around 2 a.m.
The officer pulled ahead to a safe distance and exited his vehicle, and that's when Harrison said the man fired one gunshot at him.
"Our member of the service then pulled out his firearm, shooting several times at our perpetrator, striking him in the chest," Harrison said.
He said two guns, one that appeared to be wrapped in latex gloves, and a knife were found on the suspect, who was taken to Brookdale University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The officer was not injured but was taken to Beth Israel Hospital to be treated for tinnitus.
Harrison said at this point, authorities do not believe the officer had been followed, nor do they think he was aware his intended victim was an off-duty officer.
The investigation is active and ongoing, and several blocks are shut down in the area where the shooting took place.
Police say the suspect in the case has seven prior arrests, and despite not having a license, he was charged in 2017 with causing a Belt Parkway hit and run that claimed the life of a 59-year-old woman.
He was allegedly driving a stolen Mercedes SUV eastbound on the Belt at a high rate of speed with no headlights on when he rear-ended a Mitsubishi Outlander carrying four people and then hit a Honda Civic with a woman and three young children inside.
The driver of the Civic, Johanna Taylor, remained hospitalized until her death on April 22, 2018.
Police say the suspect then flipped the stolen SUV on its side and fled from the crashed car but was not caught until April 16, 2019, when he was charged with vehicular manslaughter.
Kodak Black is staying productive while in prison. The Florida rapper just released a new album titled "Bill Israel." Features include Gucci Mane, Tory Lanez, Jackboy, Lil Yachty and more. Stream it up top.
Kodak Black's not letting imprisonment stop him from putting food on the table for thousands of folks in Florida this Thanksgiving.
The rapper dropped $15k to provide more than 1,000 frozen turkeys for families in Pompano Beach ... according to his attorney, Bradford Cohen.
We're told Kodak arranged for the birds to be sent to the E. Pat Larkins Community Center on Wednesday, where hundreds of people waited in a long line of cars to get their free food -- including a bag of chips and sodas -- courtesy of the incarcerated rapper.
As you can see ... Kodak's team members were at the community center to safely place the frozen turkeys in recipients' trunks before they drove off. We're told KB's giveaway lasted from 11 AM to 1 PM, and his people were responsible for the huge turnout by putting up flyers in local neighborhoods.
Cohen tells us another community leader who focuses on feeding the needy also helped spread the word for Kodak. We're told the rapper's working with the man on future outreach projects.
Kodak himself will be spending Thanksgiving in his new prison cell at USP Thomson, a high-security prison in Illinois. As we first told you ... he got transferred there last month from the Kentucky prison where he claimed he was being tortured.
Despite serving his time on a weapons charge until August 2022, he's remained very busy. Along with his turkey giveaway, he just dropped a new album titled "Bill Israel" ... featuring artists like Gucci Mane, Lil Yachty and Tory Lanez.

As the Houston Rockets navigate an offseason of major change, a new challenge is emerging for the franchise -- the uncertainty of former MVP guards James Harden and Russell Westbrook on their futures with the team, sources told ESPN.
In the wake of the departures of head coach Mike D'Antoni and general manager Daryl Morey, Harden and Westbrook have expressed concern about the direction of the franchise through direct conversations or discussions with their representatives and the Rockets' front office, sources said.
Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta, recently promoted general manager Rafael Stone and recently hired head coach Stephen Silas have emphasized that the franchise remains committed to fielding a contender while featuring the two perennial All-Stars in their primes. However, the concerns expressed by Harden and Westbrook that Houston's window as a contender could be closing has left the organization fearful that the superstars' commitment to remaining with the Rockets could be wavering.
Harden, 31, has been an All-Star in all eight seasons since arriving in Houston, winning MVP in 2017-18 and finishing among the top three in voting four other times in the past six years, and claiming the NBA's past three scoring titles. He is owed $131.5 million over the three seasons remaining on his maximum contract, including a $46.9 million player option in 2022-23.
Westbrook, who will turn 32 on Thursday, is also owed $131.5 million over the next three seasons and has a $46.7 million player option in 2022-23. He won the 2016-17 MVP and made his ninth All-Star appearance last season, which ended with Westbrook playing through rust and injury after rushing back from a strained right quadriceps during the first round of the playoffs.
Both stars were consulted during the Rockets' coaching search and were on board with hiring Silas, sources said.
Harden, who has said publicly several times that he hopes to play the remainder of his career in Houston, has expressed similar urgency in the past several offseasons about improving the Rockets' chances to win a championship. He remains engaged in discussions with Houston's front office about potential personnel moves this offseason, sources said.
The only officer to be charged in the Breonna Taylor case is just now accused of sexual assault -- something the alleged victim claims his bosses knew about, but did nothing to correct.
Margo Borders is suing Brett Hankison, claiming he sexually assaulted her in 2018 after a night out at a bar where he worked security. She says she was drunk around closing time, and Hankison offered her a ride home.
According to the docs, obtained by TMZ, Borders alleges Hankison invited himself into her home and plopped down on the couch, while she went into her bedroom to change.
Borders says she passed out, but claims Hankison came into her room, got naked and sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious. When she finally woke up, she claims she screamed for him to get off her, and Hankison grabbed his uniform and left.
The next day, Borders claims Hankison contacted her, insisting they'd engaged in consensual relations. She also claims more than 10 other anonymous women have come forward to make statements about Hankison's alleged misconduct with them.
She's also suing several of his co-workers and supervisors -- on the police force and at the bar -- claiming they were aware of his alleged abuse but never took action to stop it.
It doesn't sound like Borders herself filed a police report, but she claims several of the other women made police reports that never got pursued.
As you know, Hankison was charged with wanton endangerment in the Breonna Taylor case ... for allegedly shooting into a neighboring apartment, but not for shooting and killing Breonna.
He's pled not guilty, and has been fired from LMPD.
An NYPD police officer and four others were arrested on federal charges of conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine, federal prosecutors said Monday.
Over the course of almost five years, Amaury Abreu, 34, was an alleged member of a multinational drug trafficking operation and used his position within the NYPD to "protect his co-conspirators," the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York announced in a press release.
Dating back to Jan. 2016, prosecutors allege Abreu provided law enforcement information to others in the trafficking operation to conceal their actions and checked warrants on its members. In at least one instance, feds said, he distributed cocaine.
"Today I’m going to find out the thing I couldn’t yesterday because there were too many people at the office," Abreu said in one message to the traffickers, according to court records.
Officials from the FBI arrested Abreu, who was assigned to the 113th Precinct, at his Long Island home Monday morning, the district attorney's office said. He entered a plea of not guilty Monday afternoon in federal court and was released on a $1 million bond with home detention.
“There is no place for corruption in the NYPD and it will always be prosecuted fully. We commend our IAB investigators and law enforcement partners in this case,” a statement from NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea read.
Abreu was charged with conspiring to import and distribute cocaine. He did not yet have a defense attorney who could comment on the charges. He has been with the NYPD nine years and is suspended without pay, the Police Department said.
Seth DuCharme, the Brooklyn U.S. attorney, said in a statement that Abreu “disgraced his NYPD badge and betrayed the public trust as well as fellow members of law enforcement who put their lives on the line to interdict drugs that endanger our communities.”
Federal prosecutors also charged two high-ranking members of the New York-based group and the owner of a Long Island produce company accused of receiving cocaine concealed in cardboard tomato boxes.
Authorities said the ring also relied on help from a corrupt U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer to escort drug shipments through customs and baggage claim at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
“Officer Abreu and his co-conspirators served as a direct pipeline for the importation and distribution of cocaine in our city, as we allege today. While Abreu’s principal role in the DTO was more behind the scenes than out on the street, his double-dealing method of providing information and guidance to those who were on the front line of the illegal enterprise put the lives and safety of both the citizens of this city and his fellow NYPD officers at risk,” FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge Sweeney said.
