LOS ANGELES (AP) — A day after Donald Trump's election to the presidency, campaign divisions appeared to widen as many thousands of demonstrators — some with signs with messages declaring "NOT MY PRESIDENT" — flooded streets across the country to protest his surprise triumph.
From New England to heartland cities like Kansas City and along the West Coast, demonstrators bore flags and effigies of the president-elect, disrupting traffic and declaring that they refused to accept Trump's victory.
Flames lit up the night sky in California cities Wednesday as thousands of protesters burned a giant papier-mache Trump head in Los Angeles and started fires in Oakland intersections.
Los Angeles demonstrators also beat a Trump piñata and sprayed the Los Angeles Times building and news vans with anti-Trump profanity. One protester outside LA City Hall read a sign that simply said "this is very bad."
Late in the evening several hundred people blocked one of the city's busiest freeways, U.S. 101 between downtown and Hollywood.
City News Service reported that 13 people were arrested as officers in full riot gear walked the protesters off the freeway.
By 1:30 a.m., the freeway was clear of demonstrators but lanes remained closed for cleanup.
In Oakland, several thousand people gathered in Frank Ogawa Palaza, police said, clogging intersections and freeway on-ramps.
In Chicago, where thousands had recently poured into the streets to celebrate the Chicago Cubs' first World Series victory in over a century, several thousand people marched through the Loop. They gathered outside Trump Tower, chanting "Not my president!"
Chicago resident Michael Burke said he believes the president-elect will "divide the country and stir up hatred." He added there was a constitutional duty not to accept that outcome.
Police said that an estimated 1,800 to 2,000 people participated in the Chicago protests. Police reported five arrests, including two for obstructing traffic, but said there were no major incidents.
A similar protest in Manhattan drew about 1,000 people. Outside Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in midtown, police installed barricades to keep the demonstrators at bay.
Hundreds of protesters gathered near Philadelphia's City Hall despite chilly, wet weather. Participants — who included both supporters of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who lost to Clinton in the primary — expressed anger at both Republicans and Democrats over the election's outcome.
In Boston, thousands of anti-Trump protesters streamed through downtown, chanting "Trump's a racist" and carrying signs that said "Impeach Trump" and "Abolish Electoral College." Clinton appears to be on pace to win the popular vote, despite losing the electoral count that decides the presidential race.
The protesters gathered on Boston Common before marching toward the Massachusetts Statehouse, with beefed-up security including extra police officers.
A protest that began at the Minnesota State Capitol Tuesday night with about 100 people swelled at is moved into downtown St. Paul, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. Protesters blocked downtown streets and traveled west on University Avenue where they shouted expletives about Trump in English and Spanish.
There were other Midwest protest marches in Omaha, Nebraska, and Kansas City, Missouri.
Marchers protesting Trump's election chanted and carried signs in front of the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Media outlets broadcast video Wednesday night showing a peaceful crowd in front of the new downtown hotel. Many chanted "No racist USA, no Trump, no KKK."
Another group stood outside the White House. They held candles, listened to speeches and sang songs.
Dallas activists gathered by the dozens outside the city's sports arena, the American Airlines Center.
In Oregon, dozens of people blocked traffic in downtown Portland, burned American flags and forced a delay for trains on two light-rail lines.
Hundreds massed in downtown Seattle streets.
Many held anti-Trump and Black Lives Matter signs and chanted slogans, including "Misogyny has to go," and "The people united, will never be defeated."
Five people were shot and injured in an area near the protest, but police said the shootings and the demonstration were unrelated.
Back in New York, several groups of protesters caused massive gridlock as police mobilized to contain them under a light rain.
They held signs that read "Trump Makes America Hate" and chanted "hey, hey, ho, ho Donald Trump has got to go." and "Impeach Trump."

A full day after Republican Donald Trump was elected to be America's 45th president, feelings for many Hillary Clinton supporters were still raw.
There have been protests across the country in Houston, Los Angeles, Oakland, New York, Minnesota, Boston and other major cities.
Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr didn't mince words about Trump's election during a press conference prior to his team's game against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, November 9th.
"Maybe we should have seen it coming over the last ten years. You look at society and you look at what's popular. People are getting paid millions of dollars to go on TV and scream at each other," Kerr said. "Whether it's in sports or politics. I guess it was only a matter of time before it spilled into politics. All of a sudden you're faced with reality. The man who is going to lead you is routinely racist, misogynist, insulting words. That's a tough one."
"I wish him well. Hope he's a good president. I have no idea what kind of president he will be because he hasn't said anything about what he's going to do. We don't know. But it's tough when you want there to be some respect and dignity ... and there hasn't been any.. And then you walk into a room with your daughter and your wie, who’ve basically been insulted by his comments, and they’re distraught. And you walk in and you see the faces of your players, most of them who have been insulted directly as minorities, it’s sort of shocking. It really is. We talked about it as a team this morning. I don’t know what else to say.”

America has spoken, electing Republican Donald Trump as it's 45th president. Today, he has a lot of fences to mend if he's going to bring the country together.
Trump seemed to be made of Teflon during his divisive campaign. No matter what vitriolic rhetoric that came out his mouth, his supporters stuck by him and carried the business mogul to victory.
During a January rally in Iowa Trump said, "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters."
Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was by far the most qualified candidate, but she shot herself in the foot. The controversy surrounding her use of a private email server during her tenure as United States Secretary of State, led to an FBI investigation.
Although she was eventually cleared, that dark cloud hung over her head throughout the race and eroded a lot of voter's trust in her.
Nevertheless, Trump's victory was shocking, especially to those he offended on his climb to the White House.
As it started to become clear that Trump would win the election, CNN political contributor, Van Jones, got emotional while talking about outcome and what it meant to those who were hurt by the next president's comments on the campaign trail.
"People have talked about a miracle. I'm hearing about a nightmare," Jones said. "You tell your kids: Don't be a bully... don't be a bigot.. do your homework and be prepared. And then you have this outcome. You have people putting children to bed tonight, and they're afraid of breakfast. They're afraid of 'How do I explain this to my children?' I have Muslim friends who are texting me tonight, 'Should I leave the country?' I have families of immigrants that are terrified tonight.”
"This was a rebellion against the elites, true, it was a create reinvention of politics... but it was also something else,” he continued. "We haven't talked about race. This was a 'white-lash' against a changing country ... against a black president in part. And that's the part where the pain comes. Donald Trump has a responsibility tonight to come and reassure people that he is going to be the president of all the people who he insulted and offended and brushed aside."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump claimed his place Wednesday as America's 45th president, an astonishing victory for the celebrity businessman and political novice who capitalized on voters' economic anxieties, took advantage of racial tensions and overcame a string of sexual assault allegations on his way to the White House.
Trump's triumph over Hillary Clinton, not declared until well after midnight, will end eight years of Democratic dominance of the White House. He'll govern with Congress fully under Republican control and lead a country deeply divided by his rancorous campaign against Clinton. He faces fractures within his own party, too, given the numerous Republicans who either tepidly supported his nomination or never backed him at all.
As he claimed victory, Trump urged Americans to "come together as one united people."
Clinton, who hoped to become the nation's first female president, called her Republican rival to concede but did not plan to speak publicly until Wednesday morning.
President Barack Obama invited Trump to meet with him at the White House on Thursday to discuss transition, and the White House said the president planned to address the election results in a statement Wednesday. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama called Trump to congratulate him and also called Clinton to convey his admiration for the "strong campaign she waged throughout the country."
Trump, who spent much of the campaign urging his supporters on as they chanted "lock her up," said the nation owed Clinton "a major debt of gratitude" for her years of public service. Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said Obama and Trump had "a very nice talk" when the president called to congratulate him in the early hours Wednesday.

The Republican blasted through Democrats' longstanding firewall, carrying Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, states that hadn't voted for a GOP presidential candidate since the 1980s. He needed to win nearly all of the competitive battleground states, and he did just that, including Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and others.
Global stock markets and U.S. stock futures plunged, but later recovered somewhat, reflecting investor concern over what a Trump presidency might mean.
A New York real estate developer who lives in a sparkling Manhattan high-rise, Trump forged a striking connection with white, working class Americans who feel left behind in a changing economy and diversifying country. He cast immigration, both from Latin America and the Middle East, as the root of the problems plaguing many Americans and tapped into fears of terrorism emanating at home and abroad.
GOP Senate candidates fended off Democratic challengers in key states, including North Carolina, Indiana and Wisconsin. Republicans also maintained their grip on the House.
Senate control means Trump will have great leeway in appointing Supreme Court justices, which could mean a shift to the right that would last for decades.
Trump has pledged to usher in sweeping changes to U.S. foreign policy, including building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and suspending immigration from countries with terrorism ties. He's also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and spoken of building a better relationship with Moscow, worrying some in his own party who fear he'll go easy on Putin's provocations.
Putin sent him a telegram of congratulations early Wednesday.
Trump upended years of political convention on his way to the White House, leveling harshly personal insults against his rivals, deeming Mexican immigrants rapists and murderers, and vowing to temporarily suspend Muslim immigration to the U.S. He never released his tax returns, breaking with decades of campaign tradition, and eschewed the kind of robust data and field efforts that helped Obama win two terms in the White House, relying instead on his large, free-wheeling rallies to energize supporters. His campaign was frequently in chaos, and he cycled through three campaign managers.
Conway, his final campaign manager, touted the team's accomplishments as the final results rolled in, writing on Twitter that "rally crowds matter" and "we expanded the map."
Clinton spent months warning voters that Trump was unfit and unqualified to be president. But the former senator and secretary of state struggled to articulate a clear rationale for her own candidacy.
She faced persistent questions about her honesty and trustworthiness. Those troubles flared anew late in the race, when FBI Director James Comey announced a review of new emails from her tenure at the State Department. On Sunday, just two days before Election Day, Comey said there was nothing in the material to warrant criminal charges against Clinton.
Trump will inherit an anxious nation, deeply divided by economic and educational opportunities, race and culture.
Exit polls underscored the fractures: Women nationwide supported Clinton by a double-digit margin, while men were significantly more likely to back Trump. More than half of white voters backed the Republican, while nearly 9 in 10 blacks and two-thirds of Hispanics voted for the Democrat.
Doug Ratliff, a 67-year-old businessman from Richlands, Virginia, said Trump's election was one of the happiest days of his life.
"This county has had no hope," said Ratliff, who owns strip malls in an area badly beaten by the collapse of the coal industry. "Things will change. I know he's not going to be perfect. But he's got a heart. And he gives people hope."
The Republican Party's tortured relationship with its nominee was evident right to the end. Former President George W. Bush and wife Laura Bush declined to back Trump, instead selecting "none of the above" when they voted for president, according to spokesman Freddy Ford.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, a reluctant Trump supporter, called the businessman earlier in the evening to congratulate him, according to a Ryan spokeswoman. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the American people "have chosen a new direction for our nation."

2016 XXL Freshman rapper Lil Yachty says and does things his own way. The 19-year old has built a solid base of fans that probably weren't yet born when hip hop icons, The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, were on top of the game.
That might explain why they didn't raise much of a fuss when in August Yachty told Billboard he couldn't name 5 songs from either of them.
"But if I'm doing this my way and making all this money," he reasoned at the time. "Why should I do it how everybody says it's supposed to be done?"
Lil Boat did receive criticism from Biggie and 2Pac fans, but that obviously didn't bother him because during his recent appearance on Pitchfork's "Over/Under" he said The Notorious was overrated.

Rick Ross has probably been screaming at his accountants since finding out he's $5.7 million in the hole with the Internal Revenue Service.
TMZ reports that the Miami rapper owes $4.6 million for the year 2012 and roughly $570,000 each for 2013 and 2014.
The federal government has slapped Ross with a tax lien. If he doesn't cough up the funds they'll start hauling off his valuables to settle the debt.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Stephen Curry let it fly from the top of the arc, backpedaled as his record-breaking 3-ball dropped and then wildly began bobbing his head and shuffling his feet with the swagger of a two-time reigning MVP.
Add another remarkable achievement to a long list of them for Curry: most 3-pointers in one game.
The star guard sank 13 to set an NBA mark — one game after missing all his 3-point tries for the first time in two years — and the Golden State Warriors beat the winless New Orleans Pelicans 116-106 on Monday.
"This was a special night," Curry said.
He finished with 46 points, three days after his league-record streak of 157 games with at least one 3 was snapped when he went 0 for 10 on 3-point tries in a 117-97 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
"I was hard on myself in practice the last two days. I had pretty good shooting sessions," he said. "I don't overreact to games like that whether I go 0 for 10 or 2 for 12 or whatever it is. My process is the same, but I had another level of focus the last two days trying to get my rhythm back and see the ball go in."

Curry shot 13 of 17 from beyond the arc in his seventh career game with double-digit 3s. He broke the mark with 2:23 to go and bobbed his head in delight as the crowd roared.
Curry shared the previous 3-point record of 12 with Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall.
"Nothing you can do about it. He was being Steph," Pelicans star Anthony Davis said.
Grabbing back the spotlight from new Golden State star Kevin Durant, Curry raised his right arm and pumped his chest all night, howling and pointing as one shot fell after another. He went 16 for 26 overall in his first 40-point performance after leading the NBA with 13 last season.
Warriors fans enjoyed every minute of it, chanting "M-V-P! M-V-P!"
"That was quite a show. Not at all surprising the way Steph bounces back from bad nights," Golden State coach Steve Kerr said.
Klay Thompson had 24 points with two 3s as the Splash Brothers looked far more in sync from long range at last. Durant added 22 for the Warriors.
Davis had 33 points and 13 rebounds for New Orleans (0-7), which along with the 76ers (0-6) are the NBA's lone teams still without a victory. Davis gave the Pelicans a 73-72 lead on a turnaround hook shot with 4:14 left in the third quarter.
Davis had 45 points, 17 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in the teams' initial matchup on Oct. 28.
Draymond Green had his second double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 assists for the Warriors, who were back at Oracle Arena after they embarrassed the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-96 there in Durant's first game against his former team last Thursday.
Thompson — 2 for 10 against the Lakers from 3-point range, a combined 0 of 13 vs. Phoenix and Portland and 9 of 46 overall (19.6 percent) this season coming in — missed his first three attempts before hitting from the baseline late in the second quarter as the sellout crowd went crazy.
Curry knocked down his first 3-point attempt at the 7:29 mark of the first quarter. He received a technical with 1:45 left in the third for arguing he was fouled by Davis on a 3-point attempt.
