FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. (WESH) — A Flagler County mother has been arrested after deputies say she is accused of helping to hold another child down while he was being beaten.
On Sept. 8, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Indian Trails Middle School Resource deputy was approached by a female motorist who said her son was in a fight at the sports complex.
The motorist allegedly stated her son was jumped by two male juveniles & that one of the boys' mothers also assaulted her son during the altercation.
The reporting party stated the unknown mother exited her vehicle & grabbed her son by the hair & arm while the two juveniles continued to beat him.
School Resource Deputy Cooper met with the juvenile suspects & the victim. The victim stated he was, "sitting with his friends when two kids approached him. He said one of them started hitting him & he got up and pushed him to the ground & then other boys started hitting him & that’s when his friends started coming over to help him."
The victim also allegedly stated that sometime during the fight, he believes one of the boys' mothers grabbed him & held him while the boys beat him.
FSCO deputies made contact with the parents of the juvenile suspects and it was determined that one of the parents was unaware of the incident.
They said the other parent, who allegedly held the child, was identified as Ashley Ruffin. The Flagler County Sheriff's Office attempted to contact Ruffin & informed her husband of the altercation & advised she may be facing criminal charges.
Ruffin’s husband became irate, the report said, & he allegedly stated he was going to call the FCSO to, “file a report about the fight.” He stated he would not allow his wife & son to speak with FCSO.
Other juvenile witnesses confirmed the victim was jumped by the suspected juveniles. All the witnesses also stated that an adult female grabbed the victim & allowed the other boys to continue to hit him. She also displayed a Taser during the altercation, officials said. The female was identified as Ashley Ruffin.
Ruffin was arrested & transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. She’s being charged with battery & child abuse.
Battery charges have been submitted to the State Attorney’s Office for the other juveniles involved in the altercation.
“There is zero excuse for an adult, especially a parent, to be physically involved in a juvenile dispute,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Kids need to have leadership from their parents & taught how to handle disputes properly. I doubt she will receive a mother of the year award.”

Mercury is crucial to small-scale gold mining in South America but increasing scrutiny of its health and environmental impact in the Amazon is leading to its prohibition throughout the continent.
This investigation delves into the underworld of mercury, following its path from Guyana to neighboring Suriname, exploring the health and environmental consequences, and what the prohibition of mercury would mean for the livelihoods of miners and communities across the Amazon.
‘MERCURY’ is a film by Tom Laffay, produced by InfoAmazonia, a data journalism initiative which reports on the Amazon. It forms part of a wider investigation called ‘Mercury - Chasing the Quicksilver’ led by journalist Bram Ebus. Read more here: https://mercurio.infoamazonia.org/en/

LOWVILLE, New York (WWNY) - Lewis County General Hospital will stop delivering babies after September 24 because too many maternity unit workers have resigned over COVID vaccination mandates.
That’s according to Lewis County Health System Chief Executive Officer Gerald Cayer, who held a news conference Friday in Lowville.
He said 6 employees in the maternity unit resigned rather than get a COVID shot and another 7 are undecided.
According to Cayer, the hospital will be unable to safely staff the unit and will pause delivering babies after September 24.
He said he hopes this is a temporary situation and will work with the state Department of Health to make sure the unit won’t permanently close.
“If we can pause the service and now focus on recruiting nurses who are vaccinated, we will be able to reengage in delivering babies here in Lewis County,” said Cayer.
Cayer said 165 hospital employees have yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19; that’s 27 percent of the workforce.
The other 464 workers, or 73 percent of employees, have gotten their shots, he said.
In August, the state announced all health care workers at hospitals and long-term care facilities across New York would be required to have gotten at least their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination by September 27.
Cayer said the announcement prompted 30 workers to get vaccinated, while another 30 resigned.
“Our hope is as we get closer (to the deadline), the numbers will increase of individuals who are vaccinated, fewer individuals will leave and maybe, with a little luck, some of those who have resigned will reconsider,” he said. “We are not alone. There are thousands of positions that are open north of the Thruway and now we have a challenge to work through, you know, with the vaccination mandate.”
He added that Lewis County, as a whole, has the state’s highest 7-day average percentage of positive COVID test results reported over the last 3 days.

The MTV Video Music Awards — a night full of music, camera flashes and fans screaming for their favorite artist — got off to a rocky start, as Conor McGregor and Machine Gun Kelly getting into a heated exchange on the red carpet before the show even started.
McGregor spoke with ET backstage and described the interaction as "absolutely nothing."
"Nothing happened with me, I only fight real fighters, people that actually fight, you know what I mean," he continued. "I certainly don't fight little vanilla boy rappers. I don't even know the guy. I don't know anything about him, except that he's with Megan Fox."

An eyewitness told ET that McGregor and MGK "exchanged some words" and then McGregor lunged at the musician. MGK and Megan Fox then left the red carpet and threatened not to pose for photos. However, according to eyewitnesses, the pair returned once McGregor left.
McGregor was seen throughout the night walking with a cane due to the fractured leg he suffered in his last fight. The MMA fighter later presented the award for Artist of the Year while Machine Gun Kelly performed his song "Papercuts" near the end of the show.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP/WSVN) — A chance encounter with a former Marine beset by delusions of child sex trafficking ultimately led to the massacre of four members of a Florida family, including a mother holding her baby boy, a sheriff said Thursday.
Bryan Riley, who faces murder and other charges in Sunday’s killings, stopped by the slain family’s Lakeland home briefly the day before after going to a nearby friend’s house to pick up a first aid kit, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said at a news conference.
Riley had told acquaintances he was headed for Hurricane Ida relief work and the friend offered the kit for the purported trip. A short distance away, Riley saw Justice Gleason mowing his lawn with his 11-year-old daughter in the yard, Judd said.
That provided the trigger that led to the slayings, Judd said: Riley saw the girl, believing she was an imaginary child named Amber who was suicidal and being held by a supposed sex trafficking ring that God had told him to confront. In fact, no one named Amber lived at the home and Gleason repeatedly told Riley that before asking him to leave their initial encounter.
“This was all fiction, all made up by him,” Judd said. “There were no victims of sex trafficking in that house.”
Judd provided numerous new details about Sunday’s slayings, including that Riley, wearing body armor, had three weapons with him and fired at least 100 shots in the main home and a smaller one in back where Catherine Delgado, 62, was the first to be killed.
Law enforcement officers fired about 60 shots in a gun battle that left Riley with a gunshot wound to the abdomen that is not life-threatening, Judd said. Riley surrendered after that.
“He was a coward. An absolute coward. He looks like a man, but he’s not a man. He’s a sniveling coward,” Judd told reporters.
The 11-year-old girl survived the attack despite being shot multiple times and has undergone four surgeries so far, Judd said.
She told investigators that her family huddled in a bathroom after Riley shot his way into the home, killed their dog and then attacked everyone hiding there. Riley repeatedly asked about Amber and then counted down — three, two, one — before shooting her and eventually leaving her for dead, she told authorities.

Judd said the girl played dead and was able to survive despite wounds to her legs, hand and abdomen.
“That’s the reason she’s alive today,” the sheriff said.
The victims are Gleason, 40; his 33-year-old girlfriend, Theresa Lanham; their baby boy, Jody, who was born in May; and Delgado, who was Lanham’s mother and owned the property. They possessed no weapons.
Riley, 33, served as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan and was working as a security guard in the Lakeland area, including at a church. After that recent job, his girlfriend of four years told investigators, Riley began talking about communication with God but not about violence.
“No one has told us they knew anything about violence,” Judd said.
Riley is recovering from his gunshot wound and is being held without bond on murder, attempted murder and other charges. An Oct. 12 arraignment date is set for him to enter a plea. Judd said he has already confessed to the crimes, which could bring the death penalty.
Investigators also have not yet verified Riley’s post-arrest statement to officers that he was high on methamphetamines at the time of the shooting. No evidence of that drug has been found, although Judd said illegal steroids where found at Riley’s home in Brandon and hospital blood tests could reveal more.
“This investigation is not near over. This is going to go on for weeks and weeks and weeks,” the sheriff said. “This mass murder is exceptionally horrible.”

(CNN) Former world champion boxer Evander Holyfield stepped back in the ring for the first time in over a decade, but it didn't go quite to plan for the 58-year-old.
Holyfield, who is best known for his two victories over Mike Tyson -- including the infamous fight in which Tyson bit his ear -- suffered a first-round technical knockout to former UFC fighter Vitor Belfort on Saturday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Florida.
Belfort, 44, who was a UFC light heavyweight champion, attacked Holyfield with a succession of quick punches early on, pinning him against the ropes.
And, having not landed a punch of his own, Holyfield was knocked to the canvas twice before the referee called an end to the fight in the first round.
He returned to boxing with just over a week's notice to replace Oscar De La Hoya, who contracted Covid-19.
Belfort called it a "legendary" moment given the tough season everyone is going through.
"I remember I was fighting two guys on the same night and Holyfield was fighting Mike Tyson for $30 million," he told the media after. "It's been a privilege."
While the two former combat sports competitors did battle in the ring, former US President Donald Trump and his son, Don Jr., provided their input from the commentary booth.
The Trumps were part of the commentary team for the event, alongside rapper 50 Cent.
Trump has long been a fan of boxing and mixed martial arts.
He hosted several of Tyson's early fights at his Atlantic City property. Trump was a sponsor of one of Tyson's most famous knockouts -- his destruction of Michael Spinks in just 91 seconds.

The Sioux Falls Police Department arrested a man after they found him afterhours at a bar with a beer in hand.
A 53-year-old man from Sioux Falls was arrested at about 5:30 a.m. Friday at the 300 block of North Cherapa Place, according to police spokesman Sam Clemens. The man was charged with first degree burglary and booked into the Minnehaha County Jail.
A burglary alarm notified police of a possible occupant at the bar. Once police arrived, they found a man who was walking around the establishment drinking a beer, Clemens said.
Police were unsure how the 53-year-old made his way into the bar. Forced entry was not a factor in the man getting into the bar, Clemens said.

Pop Smoke's gravesite was found utterly destroyed this weekend -- this after apparent vandals smashed his crypt & apparently tried dragging his casket out.
We're told Pop Smoke's spot on the outer wall of a mausoleum within the grounds seemed to be singled out & horribly vandalized ... with his marble plaque cracked & broken through, almost completely. You can see his full name displayed ... Bashar Barakah Jackson.
There was other debris left scattered on the ground ... including what we're told looked like burned & discarded joints, as well as flowers.
The worst part is that there seems to be drag marks left on the ground ... & another shot of what we're told was right across from the mausoleum appears to indicate the perps might've actually gotten into Pop Smoke's tomb ... either pulling something out, or trying to.
The eyewitness tells us this door-looking thing seemed to be a concrete slab that would presumably sit over PS's casket, separating his body from another right above him. The black rectangular object, we're told, also looked to be part of Pop Smoke's wall enclosure.
It's unclear if the casket was still inside or intact ... but we're told the person who found this notified security, who were supposedly unaware of any such vandalism until being told. The eyewitness also tells us that when they returned to the site some hours later ... Pop Smoke's plaque had been replaced with a blank slab & there was caution tape around the area. Some of the debris had also been cleaned up -- but it was still quite apparent something terrible had happened.

Rayshard Brooks' widow wants someone to pay for his shooting death ... so she's suing the City of Atlanta & the 2 police officers involved in the incident that killed him.
Tomika Miller just filed a lawsuit on behalf of Rayshard's estate ... claiming her late husband's shooting death in a Wendy's parking lot on June 12, 2020, was "senseless and unjustified."
According to the lawsuit, Tomika claims Rayshard remained "calm, polite, cordial & cooperative" with cops during a 41-minute interaction until officer Garrett Rolfe began handcuffing Brooks to arrest him & threw him to the ground.
In the suit, Tomika claims the other cop, Devin Brosnan, then threatened Rayshard with a Taser while he was on the ground ... even though she claims Brosnan had not completed the police department's mandatory Taser certification course.
Tomika claims Rayshard stood up while being threatened & gained control of Brosnan's Taser & that's when Rolfe grabbed his own Taser & shot Rayshard with the Taser darts.
In the docs, Tomika claims Rayshard turned his back on the cops & started running away after being tased, with Rolfe chasing after him & firing 3 bullets from his gun, 2 of which struck Brooks in the back & caused him to crumple to the ground.
Tomika claims the cops didn't give Rayshard medical aid after shooting him, & instead, Rolfe went over & kicked Brooks.
In her suit, Tomika claims Rolfe acted with actual malice & an intent to injure Rayshard by using deadly & excessive force.
Rayshard's widow claims the officers acted with deliberate indifference by not rendering medical aid after shooting him.
In the docs, Tomika's also blaming the City of Atlanta, claiming its police department failed to adequately train and supervise its officers & she's going after all of them for unspecified damages.

ATLANTA (11 Alive) — Atlanta Police are investigating a deadly shooting in a shopping plaza where they said the victim was defending himself as others attempted to break into his car.
Officers said the shooting happened around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon at the Peachtree Battle Shopping Plaza, in Buckhead. According to police, a man was walking out of the Publix in the plaza when he noticed two men breaking into his car.
At that moment, he decided to confront the men & when the situation escalated, "the victim chose to take his weapon & defend himself against the people that were breaking into the vehicle," according to APD Deputy Chief Timothy Peek.
The first suspect was found dead inside of a car.
Police said the other man ran off toward Peachtree Hills firing a gun. Shots were fired back & forth, with the second suspect being wounded on his wrist.
"Because of the quick response, units were able to get into the area, set up a perimeter, and locate a second person a short distance away," Peek said.
After being located by officers, the second man was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
"What we do know is the victim's vehicle was entered. We do know some of the victim's property was recovered on the scene but not inside the vehicle where it was originally left, " Peek added.
11Alive SkyTracker flew over the Peachtree Road scene where multiple officers were seen in the parking lot. An ambulance was there as well. People were standing outside one of the stores as officers conducted their investigation.
A few witnesses who spoke to 11Alive said they were in a nearby tavern & ducked under the tables after hearing multiple gunshots.
"It appears to be this was a group of people who decided to come out & commit crimes & unfortunately it led to the death of someone," Peek said.
Investigators are also checking to see if the suspects are connected to any other crimes. The investigation is ongoing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former NFL players Clinton Portis, Tamarick Vanover & Robert McCune pleaded guilty for their roles in a nationwide health care fraud scheme & could face years in prison, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.
Portis, Vanover & McCune admitted to defrauding an NFL program set up to reimburse medical expenses not covered by insurance for retired players & their families.
McCune could be facing life in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud & health care fraud, 13 counts of health care fraud, 11 counts of wire fraud & three counts of aggravated identity theft. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 19.
The DOJ said McCune orchestrated the scheme that resulted in approximately $2.9 million worth of false & fraudulent claims being filed & $2.5 million paid out between June 2017 & April 2018.
Portis & Vanover each pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and could face up to 10 years in prison. According to court documents, Portis was responsible for just under $100,000 & Vanover just under $160,000 in benefits for expensive medical equipment that were not provided.
They agreed to pay back that money. Portis is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 6 & Vanover on Jan. 22.
The league established the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan after the 2006 collective bargaining agreement to provide tax-free reimbursement of medical expenses up to $350,000 per player.
Portis, Vanover & McCune were originally indicted in the Eastern District of Kentucky in December 2019. Twelve other retired players had previously been charged & pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud, including former Chiefs & Saints receiver Joe Horn & longtime defensive back Carlos Rogers.
The FBI investigated the case across the U.S.
McCune, 42, was a 2005 fifth-round draft pick who played eight NFL games at linebacker with Washington & Baltimore.
Vanover, 47, was taken in the third round of the 1995 draft by Kansas City & played 77 games at receiver for the Chiefs & Chargers.
Portis, 40, was a second-round pick of the Broncos in 2002 & won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year honors that year. The running back played 113 games with Denver & Washington from 2002-2010.
