Last week, Kevin Gough, a lawyer representing one of the three white men accused of killing Arbery, a Black man who was jogging in Brunswick, Ga. in February 2020, objected to Reverend Al Sharpton attending the trial.
“Obviously there's only so many pastors they can have, and the fact that their pastor’s Al Sharpton right now, that's fine, but then that's it. We don't want any more black pastors coming in here, or other, Jesse Jackson, whoever was in here earlier this week sitting with the victim's family trying to influence a jury in this case,” Gough said.
Judge Timothy Walmsley called Gough's comments last week "reprehensible."
Gough raised the same objection today when Jesse Jackson actually did appear in the courtroom.
"There is no reason for these prominent icons in the civil rights movement to be here," the attorney said to the judge.
Walmsley said he was not aware Jackson was there until Gough pointed it out.
"At this point, it's almost as if you’re just trying to continue this for purposes other than just bringing it to the court’s attention and I find that objectionable," Walmsley said.
"I’m done talking about it, Mr. Gough," he continued.
