NEW YORK (AP) — Whoopi Goldberg was suspended for two weeks Tuesday as co-host of “The View” because of what the head of ABC News called her “wrong and hurtful comments” about Jews and the Holocaust.
“While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities,” ABC News President Kim Godwin said in a statement.
The suspension came a day after Goldberg’s comment during a discussion on “The View” that race was not a factor in the Holocaust. Goldberg apologized hours later and again on Tuesday’s morning episode, but the original remark drew condemnation from several prominent Jewish leaders.
“My words upset so many people, which was never my intention,” she said Tuesday morning. “I understand why now and for that I am deeply, deeply grateful because the information I got was really helpful and helped me understand some different things.”
Goldberg made her original comments during a discussion on the show Monday about a Tennessee school board’s banning of “Maus,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Nazi death camps during World War II. She said the Holocaust was “not about race ... it’s about man’s inhumanity to other man.”
“I misspoke,” Goldberg said at the opening of Tuesday’s show.
The flare-up over Goldberg’s remarks this week highlighted the enduring complexity of some race-related issues, including the widespread but strongly contested notion that only people of color can be victims of racism.
“Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments,” Godwin said in her statement.
“The View” brought on Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League and author of “It Could Happen Here,” on Tuesday to discuss why her words had been hurtful.
“Jewish people at the moment are feeling besieged,” Greenblatt said.

Brian Flores is going scorched earth on the NFL and New York Giants ... filing an explosive lawsuit where the former Dolphins head coach alleges the team's hiring practices were rooted in racism, and he claims a text from Bill Belichick proves it.
The 40-year-old coach filed the class action lawsuit through attorneys Douglas H. Wigdor, Michael J. Willemin, David E. Gottlieb in district court in New York on Tuesday ... and it's shocking.
Flores says he received a text from his former boss and Patriots head coach days before he interviewed with the Giants. During the conversation, Flores says BB congratulated him on landing the new gig.
BF was confused by the comment because he had yet to go in for his scheduled interview, and asked Bill if he had an inside track to their decision.
Belichick eventually admits he misread the information he received ... and tells Flores it was actually a different Brian -- Brian Daboll -- who landed the Giants job.
Flores insists this is proof he was only brought in for an interview to satisfy the Rooney Rule -- which requires teams to interview a minority candidate when a head coaching job opens up.
FYI, Flores and Daboll both worked together under Belichick in New England.
BF claims he was then "forced to sit through a dinner" with new Giants GM Joe Schoen despite "knowing that the Giants had already selected Mr. Daboll."
And Flores says this wasn't the first time he's been subjected to a "sham interview that was held only in an effort to comply with the Rooney Rule."
The fired coach says he interviewed with then-Broncos general manager John Elway and other Denver execs in 2019 ... however, Brian says "it was clear from the substance of the interview that Mr. Flores was interviewed only because of the Rooney Rule."
Flores also claims Elway and the other Broncos execs showed up an hour late for the interview and "looked completely disheveled, and it was obvious that they had drinking heavily the night before."
Brian -- who points out there's only 1 Black head coach (Mike Tomlin) and 6 GMs -- is suing on the behalf of all prospective Black coaches and front office employees.
Flores is asking the court to fix the NFL's alleged discriminatory hiring practices, in addition to damages.
There's more ... Flores also accuses Dolphins owner Stephen Ross of offering to pay him $100K per loss -- in an effort to tank the season and get a better draft pick.
Flores says when he refused to play ball, he was labeled as being difficult to work with, and ultimately fired.
"This is reflective of an all too familiar 'angry Black man' stigma that is often casted upon Black men who are strong in their morals and convictions while white men are coined as passionate for those very same attributes," the lawsuit reads.
Flores -- who is currently without a coaching gig -- understands the lawsuit could possibly prevent him from landing a job in the future.
"God has gifted me with a special talent to coach the game of football, but the need for change is bigger than my personal goals," Flores said in a statement released by his lawyers.
Brian continued ... "In making the decision to file the class action complaint today, I understand that I may be risking coaching the game that I love and that has done so much for my family and me. My sincere hope is that by standing up against systemic racism in the NFL, others will join me to ensure that positive change is made for generations to come."

"Friday" star Anthony Johnson is getting a fancy tombstone on his grave ... designed by the guy who honored Eazy-E and Nate Dogg with awesome grave markers.
Cemetery Tim, the man behind the cool celeb gravestones, tells TMZ ... he got in touch with Anthony's family after the actor/comedian died back in September. The goal was to create and install the headstone for what would have been Anthony's 56th birthday.
The gravestone chronicles Anthony's career with images ... showing him as Ezal on "Friday," and another image of Anthony as E.Z.E. in "House Party." The inscription reads, "Don't cry for me, I lived and made your ass laugh ... tell me I'm lying!"
Cemetery Tim says Anthony's widow, Lexis Jones Mason, worked with him on the design ... which also includes the late actor's signature.
TMZ broke the story ... Anthony was found lifeless in an L.A. store and his family was scrambling to pay for his funeral before a bunch of celebs picked up the tab.
Cemetery Tim says all of his work on Anthony's gravestone was done free of charge.
Fitting tribute.

A Florida man was arrested after he allegedly opened fire during a road-rage shooting in June & authorities from Miami-Dade released chilling new dashcam footage of the incident.
The June 21 incident occurred on I-95 in northwest Miami-Dade after it is believed Eric Popper, the man arrested, cut off another driver. The other driver, who was not identified, tailgated Popper, & hand gestures between the 2 were exchanged.
State troopers and Popper's lawyer disagree on what happened next.
Robert Gershman, the 30-year-old's lawyer, says the video is proof that his client was shot at first & he returned fire in self-defense.
"On the video, you can hear & see the other driver shoot his car," Gershman said, pointing out that his client heard the sound prior to shooting.
The driver of the Camry did not have a gun in his vehicle but admitted to throwing a water bottle at Popper’s SUV, investigators said. Popper fired the gun 11 times at the other driver, through his own window & windshield.
Popper pulled off the highway and called law enforcement. He later turned himself in to the Florida Highway Patrol, provided the dashcam video & resigned from his job as a civilian fire inspector with Miami Beach Fire Rescue.

Nas Blixky was reportedly shot and is currently in critical condition, multiple outlets and social media posts claim. Tweets about the Brooklyn drill rapper fighting for his life emerged online Monday night (Jan. 31) and into Tuesday morning (Feb. 1), though his camp has not confirmed any details about the alleged shooting.
According to HipHopDX, several posts allege that the up-and-coming artist was shot in the head after previewing an upcoming diss track on his social media. Earlier this week, Blixky posted a snippet from the song’s video on Instagram, writing, “WHEN SHOULD I DROP PG16 FUCK ALL EM DEAD N****S 5OK DROPPING ASAP. #IMBACK.”
Online, fans of the rapper shared theories about the alleged shooting.
“Nas Blixky was shot because he dissed another artist PG-16 and likened the possible assassination to rapper FBG Duck’s untimely demise,” one person tweeted. “Rapper FBG Duck dropped diss track ‘Dead B***hes’ slating slain gang rivals weeks before he was killed in Chicago. Rapper Nas Blixky only previewed and didn’t even get to drop his diss PG-16 and got hit with a friend…”
On Twitter, fans also shared “Rest in Peace” messages and tribute posts for Blixky, though his current condition has not been confirmed. According to The Source, police are investigating the incident.
Less than two years ago, Nick Blixky; Nas Blixky’s groupmate and an active member of the Brooklyn drill scene; was shot and killed in New York. At the time, the NYPD said the 21-year-old was found unconscious and unresponsive with “gunshot wounds to his torso and buttocks.”
Police discovered Nick Blixky after receiving a 911 call about a possible shooting in Brooklyn’s Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood. The rapper was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

Two police detectives in Connecticut’s largest city have been suspended amid investigations into allegations of insensitivity in their handling of separate cases in which Black women were found dead in their apartments.
In each of the two cases in Bridgeport, the families said police did not notify them of the deaths in a timely manner.
The city’s Democratic mayor, Joe Ganim, released a video statement Sunday saying he directed the Bridgeport Police Department’s deputy chief to place the officers on administrative leave. Ganim said both are subjects of an internal investigation, while a supervisory officer involved in the cases has retired.
Ganim apologized to the families of Lauren Smith-Fields, 23, and Brenda Lee Rawls, 53, calling it an “unacceptable failure” if police department policies involving the death of a family member were not followed.
“I am extremely disappointed with the leadership of the Bridgeport Police Department and found the actions taken up until this point with regards to these two cases unacceptable,” Ganim said in his statement. “I want to be clear to members of the public and the department that insensitivity, disrespect in action, or deviation from policy will not be tolerated by me or others in this administration.”
Both cases remain under investigation and have been assigned to other officers, he said.
The family of Smith-Fields has complained that authorities were not giving the investigation enough attention because she was African American.
Smith-Fields, a college student, was found dead after a man she had met recently online called police Dec. 12 to say he awoke to find her unresponsive. The medical examiner’s office said Smith-Fields died from the combined effects of alcohol, fentanyl and antihistamines.
Smith-Field’s family said police never notified them of her death, which they learned about more than a day later through a note left on her apartment door by her landlord. A detective eventually asked them to stop calling, they said.
The family of Rawls, who was also found dead Dec. 12 in her Bridgeport apartment after a man she was with called police to say he had awoken to find her unresponsive, told News 12 Connecticut they were never notified of the woman’s death and were told nobody could help them when they went to the police department seeking answers about the case.
A spokesperson for the Bridgeport Police Department said Monday that there were no physical signs of trauma or foul play that played a role in Rawls’ “untimely passing” and that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will ultimately determine her cause of death. The medical examiner’s office said the case is “pending further studies.”
Darnell Crosland, an attorney for Smith-Fields’ family, said on Twitter that Ganim’s statement was a step in the right direction.
“The city is liable for the behavior of its police department and its officers. I am pleased that the mayor has accepted that liability publicly and has apologized to this family for the suffering they have endured,” he wrote.
Ganim said the two officers will be placed on administrative leave until the internal investigation has been completed. A message was left seeking comment with a representative of the Bridgeport Police Union.

Feb. 1 (Yahoo News) —The charge against a former Sarcoxie High School teacher for having alleged sexual contact with a student has been dismissed in light of their subsequent marriage and its impact on prosecution of the case.
Baylee A. Turner, 26, was charged in February 2019 with having sexual contact with one of her male students after an investigation by the Jasper County Sheriff's Department.
Turner was in the middle of her first year of teaching English at Sarcoxie High School when a case arose that she'd had sexual intercourse with a student the week of Jan. 14-21, 2019, and she resigned from her position. She had taught at the district's middle school for two years before taking the position at the high school.
The Sarcoxie School Board subsequently voted to petition the state to have her teaching license revoked.
Nate Dally, an assistant prosecutor in the case, told the Globe that the charge against her was being dismissed in light of the defendant having married the student in question. Dally said that because marital or spousal privilege now applies, her former student can no longer be compelled to testify against her, making the state's case exceedingly difficult to prove in court.
Dally said that Turner has surrendered her state teaching license, which has been a primary concern of the prosecutor's office in the case.
The probable-cause affidavit filed in the case did not provide the student's age. State law prohibits sexual contact with a student by a school district employee, volunteer or official, either elected or appointed, regardless of whether the student is a minor or of age for consensual sex.
Turner is one of six young educators in Southwest Missouri to be accused in recent years of having sexual relations with a student. The charge also has been filed against teachers or student teachers in Joplin, Webb City, Monett, Diamond and McDonald County schools.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — The son & father convicted of murdering Ahmaud Arbery have reached a plea agreement that could avoid their trial on federal hate crime charges. Arbery’s parents denounced the deal as a betrayal & called on the judge to reject it.
The proposed plea agreements with Travis & Greg McMichael were filed late Sunday by prosecutors for the U.S. Justice Department. There was no mention of a deal with the 3rd defendant in the case, William “Roddie” Bryan.
No details were disclosed about the federal deals, which would not affect their state murder convictions in Arbery’s killing. All 3 men were sentenced to life in prison on Jan. 7 after a trial last fall.
Lee Merritt, an attorney for Arbery’s mother Wanda Cooper-Jones, said the deals would allow the McMichaels to serve their first 30 years in federal custody, avoiding harsher conditions in Georgia prisons. “This proposed plea is a huge accommodation to the men who hunted down & murdered Ahmaud Arbery.”
“Wanda Cooper Jones kept her promise to Ahmaud Arbery to get her son justice. Today the DOJ is attempting to ‘snatch defeat from the jaws of victory’. We will not allow it,” Merritt tweeted.
Merritt also shared a comment by Cooper-Jones: “The DOJ has gone behind my back to offer the men who murdered my son a deal to make their time in prison easier to serve,” she said. “I have been completely betrayed by the DOJ lawyers.”
Plea agreements would require the approval of U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood. She had scheduled a hearing Monday morning to address any remaining pretrial issues ahead of jury selection beginning Feb. 7.
The federal hate crime charges accuse McMichaels & Bryan of violating the 25-year-old Black man’s civil rights by chasing him through their neighborhood in coastal Georgia on Feb. 23, 2020. The McMichaels armed themselves & pursued Arbery in one pickup truck while Bryan joined the chase in another and recorded video of Travis McMichael blasting Arbery with a shotgun.
A national outcry erupted when the graphic video leaked online two months later. Georgia was one of just four U.S. states without a hate crimes law at the time. Legislators quickly approved one, but it came too late for state hate crime charges in Arbery’s killing.
During the state trial in Glynn County Superior Court, the defense argued that the white men had authority to chase Arbery because they reasonably suspected he had been committing crimes in their neighborhood. Travis McMichael testified he opened fire only after Arbery attacked him with fists & tried to grab his shotgun.
The federal judge ordered that a jury pool be chosen from throughout the Southern District of Georgia, which covers 43 counties, to improve odds of seating a fair & unbiased jury.

Rihanna has babies on the brain!
The "Diamonds" singer and fashion mogul, 33, is pregnant, expecting her first baby with rapper A$AP Rocky.
The couple was photographed out in New York City over the weekend, where Rihanna debuted her baby bump while wearing a long pink jacket. Her oversized outerwear was unbuttoned at the bottom to reveal her growing bump adorned in a gold cross with colorful jewels.
In one of the sweet photos, which were snapped in Harlem, where A$AP Rocky grew up, the rapper kisses the soon-to-be mom on her forehead as they enjoy a snowy walk outdoors.
Back in May, A$AP Rocky told GQ about his romance with Rihanna, calling her the "love of my life." When asked what it felt like to be in a relationship, he said, "So much better. So much better when you got 'the One.' She amounts to probably, like, a million of the other ones. I think when you know, you know. She's the One."
In regards to fatherhood, A$AP Rocky, 33, said starting a family is "in my destiny, absolutely." As he put it at the time, "I think I'd be an incredible, remarkably overall amazing dad. I would have a very fly child. Very."

A criminal complaint filed in 2019 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, which is now unsealed, alleges that Allison Fluke-Ekren, a U.S. citizen, organized & led an all-female military battalion on behalf of the Islamic State of Iraq & al-Sham (ISIS), & charges Fluke-Ekren with providing & conspiring to provide material support to ISIS, a designated foreign terrorist organization.
Fluke-Ekren was previously apprehended in Syria & transferred into the custody of the FBI yesterday, at which point she was first brought to the Eastern District of Virginia. She is expected to have her initial appearance at the federal courthouse in Alexandria on Monday at 2:00 p.m.
Allison Elizabeth Fluke-Ekren, aka “Allison Elizabeth Brooks,” aka “Allison Ekren,” aka “Umm Mohammed al-Amriki,” aka “Umm Mohammed,” & aka “Umm Jabril,” 42, a former resident of Kansas, traveled to Syria several years ago for the purpose of committing or supporting terrorism. Since her departure from the U.S., Fluke-Ekren has allegedly been involved with a number of terrorism-related activities on behalf of ISIS from at least 2014. These activities allegedly include, but are not limited to, planning & recruiting operatives for a potential future attack on a college campus inside the U.S. & serving as the appointed leader & organizer of an ISIS military battalion, known as the Khatiba Nusaybah, in order to train women on the use of automatic firing AK-47 assault rifles, grenades & suicide belts. Additionally, Fluke-Ekren allegedly provided ISIS & ISIS members with services, which included providing lodging, translating speeches made by ISIS leaders, training children on the use of AK-47 assault rifles & suicide belts & teaching extremist ISIS doctrine.
The complaint details the eyewitness observations of 6 separate individuals who collectively observed Fluke-Ekren’s alleged terrorist conduct from at least 2014 through approximately 2017. For example, Fluke-Ekren allegedly told a witness about her desire to conduct an attack in the U.S.. To conduct the attack, Fluke-Ekren allegedly explained that she could go to a shopping mall in the U.S., park a vehicle full of explosives in the basement or parking garage level of the structure, & detonate the explosives in the vehicle with a cell phone triggering device. Fluke-Ekren allegedly considered any attack that did not kill a large number of individuals to be a waste of resources. As alleged by the same witness, Fluke-Ekren would hear about external attacks taking place in countries outside the U.S. & would comment that she wished the attack occurred on U.S. soil instead.
The complaint further describes Fluke-Ekren’s alleged leadership role in the Khatiba Nusaybah. According to a witness, in or about late 2016, the “Wali” (or ISIS-appointed mayor) of Raqqa, Syria, allegedly permitted the opening of the “Khatiba Nusaybah,” which was a military battalion comprised solely of female ISIS members who were married to male ISIS fighters. Shortly thereafter, Fluke-Ekren allegedly became the leader & organizer of the battalion. Fluke-Ekren’s alleged main objective in this role was to teach the women of ISIS how to defend themselves against ISIS’ enemies. According to another witness, ISIS allegedly mandated women who were staying in Raqqa during the 2017 siege to attend the training. The siege was launched by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) against ISIS with an aim to seize Raqqa, the former de facto capital of ISIS in Syria. The battle began on or about June 6, 2017 and concluded on or about Oct. 17, 2017, at which point the SDF regained controlled of Raqqa.
The members of Khatiba Nusaybah were allegedly instructed on physical training, medical training, Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) driving courses, religious classes and how to pack and prep a “go bag” with rifles and other military supplies. According to eyewitness accounts, some of these classes were allegedly taught by Fluke-Ekren. One witness in particular allegedly observed that the leaders of ISIS and the other members of the military battalion were proud to have an American instructor. Fluke-Ekren also allegedly trained children on the use of automatic firing AK-47 assault rifles, grenades and suicide belts.
Fluke-Ekren is charged with providing and conspiring to provide material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization. If convicted, she faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

NEW YORK (AP) — Cheslie Kryst, the 2019 winner of the Miss USA pageant and a correspondent for the entertainment news program “Extra,” has died at age 30.
Police said Kryst jumped from a Manhattan apartment building and was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday morning. Her family confirmed her death in a statement.
“In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie. Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength,” her family said.
“Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA and as a host on EXTRA. But most importantly, as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor and colleague – we know her impact will live on,” her family said.
Kryst, a former Division I athlete and North Carolina attorney, won the Miss USA pageant in May, 2019, and competed in the Miss Universe pageant that year.
When Kryst was crowned, it marked more than a personal triumph: It meant that for the first time, three Black women were the reigning Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America.
In a statement Sunday, the nationally syndicated program “Extra” described Kryst as “not just a vital part of our show, she was a beloved part of our Extra family and touched the entire staff. Our deepest condolences to all her family and friends.”
Kryst provided commentary at last month’s Miss Universe pageant, which called her “one of the brightest, warmest, and most kind people we have ever had the privilege of knowing. Our entire community mourns her loss.”
University of South Carolina praised the former student-athlete, calling her “a woman of many talents.” Kryst also held an MBA from Wake Forest University.
According to police, Kryst’s body was found at approximately 7 a.m. Sunday in front of the Orion building, a high-rise on West 42nd Street in midtown Manhattan.
