NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The man arrested Friday in the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old who confessed to killing a high school student last year is apparently the slain teen’s father.
Bokio B. Johnson, 46, was arrested in connection with the shooting that killed Hollis Carter & wounded a woman Wednesday, New Orleans police said.
An obituary published in 2021 named Johnson as the father of Caleb Johnson, who was 18 when he was killed.
Defense attorney John Fuller has said Carter was killed & his mother critically wounded on the way to a pretrial hearing in the deaths of Caleb Johnson & his 25-year-old stepsister, Breyiana Brown on March 28, 2021.
Bokio Johnson was booked Friday on charges of second-degree murder, which carries an automatic life sentence & attempted second-degree murder — the same charges that Carter had faced.
Fuller told The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate that he had planned to argue in court that Carter’s confession was false & was made because he was afraid of the actual killer.
Carter, free on $375,000 bond, had been due in court for a status hearing on two counts of second-degree murder & one count of attempted second-degree murder.
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - Cellphone video captured the rough arrest of a man in Southwest Miami-Dade.
The rough arrest took place outside United Beauty Supply at around midnight, Friday. Officers could be seen throwing punches at the man as he laid on the ground.
“The officer kept hitting them on the head, hitting him on the ribs, the face. The officer on the other side hitting in the ribs and the face,” said Priscella MacKey, the mother of Javaris Jarrelle Swanson and Quinton Price Charles.
They ultimately arrested four men, Swanson, Charles, Ramzi Wadi & Ahmed Wadi. Police said Swanson & Charles resisted arrest after pulling them over for driving erratically.
The arrest report states Swanson “began to actively resist arrest by tensing his arms underneath his body, not allowing officers to place handcuffs on him … Mr. Swanson was given multiple commands to release his arms to which he refused.”
Officers said, after a lengthy struggle, Swanson was ultimately taken into custody. In addition to the arrests, police also seized 3 firearms.
“He has every right to feel threatened, beat by five or 10 officers on his back as one person unarmed. It’s unacceptable,” said Normekia Bourne, a sister-in-law.
In 2021 an arrest warrant was issued for Swanson after he ran off from another traffic stop and altercation with police.
Court records revealed Swanson was previously convicted of attempted murder & armed robbery.
The MDPD released a statement reading in part, “In our continued efforts of full transparency, we immediately initiated an internal affairs investigation into the matter with our Professional Compliance Bureau. The officers involved have been reassigned to administrative duties. We will continually evaluate this case, as the internal affairs process continues.”
Swanson remains in jail, charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting arrest & reckless driving.
Charles was charged with possession by a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting against an officer with violence, possession of cannabis.
He has since bonded out.
Ramzi Ahmed Wadi & Ahmed Wadi both were charged with resisting arrest & aggravated battery.
A Chicago Transit Authority employee who allegedly shot a man at a Red Line station on Saturday morning is now facing charges of attempted murder in connection with the incident.
53-year-old Sylvester Adams is facing two felony charges, including one for attempted murder, in connection with the shooting, which took place at approximately 2 a.m.
Police say that Adams, a CTA customer assistant, got into an argument and then a physical altercation with Jeremy Begay.
During that altercation, Adams opened fire, striking Begay three times. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he is still being treated for his injuries.
Video of the incident has begun circulating on social media & Begay’s family says that they want answers as to why the altercation escalated so quickly.
“My brother clearly in the video shows him trying to talk off,” Begay’s sister Francena Bischoff said. “But he (Adams) is pursuing & then my brother walks off & (he) follows him when he’s already down the escalator.”
The CTA employee told police he confronted Begay because he was disturbing customers at the station, but no official determination has been made.
“The behavior of this one employee is not at all reflective of the thousands of hardworking, dedicated men and women who take pride in their work and responsibly perform their duties each day,” the CTA said in a statement.
The CTA says that employees are not permitted to carry guns during working hours.

US President Joe Biden declared forcefully Saturday that Russian President Vladimir Putin "cannot remain in power," but the White House said afterward that it was not a call for regime change.
"For God's sake, this man cannot remain in power," Biden announced at the very conclusion of a capstone address delivered at the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
“The President’s point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region. He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia, or regime change," a White House official said.
Biden's line that Putin "cannot remain in power" was not in his prepared remarks, a White House official said.
US officials had said previously said removing Putin from power was not their goal.
"For us, it's not about regime change. The Russian people have to decide who they want to lead them," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier this month.
The Kremlin's response: “This is not to be decided by Mr. Biden," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. "It should only be a choice of the people of the Russian Federation.”

Four family members died & one seriously injured in an apparent "group jump" from a seventh-floor apartment balcony.
Police identified the French family as a 40-year-old man, his wife, 41, her twin sister and the couple's daughter, 8, who all died. The couple's son, 15, was seriously injured & rushed to the hospital. The police investigation is ongoing.
Two police officers visited the family's apartment in the Swiss resort town of Montreux to execute a search warrant for the father in connection with homeschooling the teenage son. Blick. Police carry out annual checks to see if homeschooling guidelines are being followed. The parents allegedly failed to respond to letters, police said, so officers visited the family.
Officers knocked on the door & heard a voice asking them who was there. After announcing themselves, they didn't hear anything else coming from the apartment.
At the time, "an intrusion into the apartment by the police was not justified," said a media spokesman for the cantonal police in Vaud.
"The officers were unable to enter the apartment & it appears that at that moment, the decision was made by this family to throw themselves off the balcony," Jean Christophe Sauterel, spokesman for the Vaud cantonal police, said.
The bodies were found at the foot of the building, all without shoes, by a passerby. Neighbors told police they heard a loud thud simultaneously, leading police to describe the incident as a "group jump."

The wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas reportedly urged former President Donald Trump's top aide to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
CBS and the Washington Post report that toward the end of the Trump administration, Ginni Thomas exchanged text messages over several weeks with Mark Meadows, who was White House chief of staff at the time.
The text messages were obtained by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Robert Costa, CBS News' chief election and campaign correspondent, told NPR that Ginni Thomas reached out to Meadows days after the election, when "President Trump was already eyeing a potential hearing at the U.S. Supreme Court.
"It was the beginning of a 29 text message-exchange between November 2020 and January 2021," Costa said. NPR has not independently confirmed the reporting.
It is not the first time Ginni Thomas has been the center of controversy.
Earlier this month, Thomas tried to rebut claims that there was a conflict of interest between her conservatives activism and her husband's work on the highest court. In an interview with the conservative website the Washington Free Beacon, she said that while she did attend the Jan. 6 rally that preceded the violence at the Capitol, she left before Trump spoke at noon and before the rioters breached the Capitol complex.
It is not clear whether Justice Thomas was aware of his wife's correspondence with Meadows.
