A jury has reached a verdict in the murder trial for a woman accused of killing her stepfather, a Solana Beach butterfly keeper, after coming across nude photos of herself on his computer.

Jade Sasha Janks was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder in the death of Thomas Merriman, the co-founder of the Encinitas Butterfly Farms, a nonprofit organization focused on the conservation & study of native butterflies. She faces life in prison.

Prosecutors say Janks drugged, suffocated & ultimately choked Merriman on New Year's Eve in 2020 at a home in Solana Beach. Janks was arrested the next day.

During the trial, the prosecution argued Janks, Merriman's stepdaughter, was cleaning his apartment while he was in the hospital & came across nude photos of herself on his computer. She then came up with a plan to drug her stepfather after the upsetting discovery, prosecutor Jorge Del Portillo said.

CNN— 8 teenage girls were charged with murder Tuesday in the stabbing death of a 59-year-old Toronto man in what police are calling a “swarming” attack.

The man was found stabbed Sunday shortly after 12 a.m., following a report of an assault. The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. Authorities did not release the man’s name pending family notification.

The 8 girls were found shortly after the attack & taken into custody & charged with second-degree murder, Detective Sgt. Terry Browne of the Toronto Police Service Homicide Unit said.

3 of the girls are 13, 3 of them are 14, & 2 of them are 16, according to a news release from the Toronto Police Service.

The group of teenagers “met each other through social media. They come from varying parts of the city.”

“We don’t know how or why they met on that evening & why that destination was downtown Toronto,” Browne said, adding police believe the group may have been involved in an “altercation” earlier in the evening before the stabbing.

Browne said he would not call the group of girls a “gang” but noted they participated in a behavior known as “swarming,” in which multiple attackers target a victim simultaneously. A number of weapons were also found with the girls.

3 of the girls have had “prior contact” with police, Browne said.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Franco Harris, the Hall of Fame running back whose heads-up thinking authored “The Immaculate Reception,” considered the most iconic play in NFL history, has died. He was 72.

Harris’ son Dok told The Associated Press his father passed away overnight. No cause of death was given.

Harris ran for 12,120 yards & won 4 Super Bowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s.

Harris, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound workhorse from Penn State, 8 times topped 1,000 yards rushing in a season, including 5 times while playing a 14-game schedule. He piled up another 1,556 yards rushing & 16 rushing touchdowns in the playoffs, both second all-time behind Emmitt Smith.

Harris signed with Seattle, running for just 170 yards in eight games before being released in midseason. He retired as the NFL’s third all-time leading rusher behind Walter Payton and Jim Brown.

“I don’t even think about that (anymore),” Harris said in 2006. “I’m still black & gold.”

Harris is survived by his wife Dana Dokmanovich and his son, Dok.

COCOA, Fla. (Fox35) - A 17-year-old boy accused of first-degree attempted murder beat his mother with a frying & and stabbed her repeatedly with a pocket knife because she was "constantly on his case about cleaning his room," according to the probable cause affidavit.

The teen – identified as Tobias "Toby" Jacob Brewer was arrested & booked into juvenile detention on Nov. 30 after allegedly attacking his mother & then leading authorities on a pursuit. FOX 35 has decided to name the suspect as his case has been transferred to adult court.

On Monday, the arrest report was released, which shared new details on the alleged attack.

Brewer told detectives that he stabbed his mom multiple times with a pocket knife & hit her in the head with a frying pan "until the handle of the frying pan broke." He told detectives that he was "upset" because his mom was "constantly on his case about cleaning his room."

"The suspect advised that he does not like cleaning his room and was tired of the victim (his mom) constantly harping about it," the report stated. Brewer told detectives that he then took both of his mom's car keys & took money out of her purse "so that he can have money once he left the area."

He also reportedly admitted to sending a text to his friend about the attack and asked him to bring a gun to "shoot the victim," according to the report. The friend said he would not bring a gun, but would bring a knife. The report notes that the friend has autism.

The suspect led authorities – with 2 of his friends & his girlfriend – on a pursuit through multiple counties. The pursuit ended after the vehicle crashed into a wooded area & the people inside ran. Brewer was detained shorty after.

The mom is listed in critical condition. When authorities found her, she took a breath & told deputies, "Toby did this."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumer banking giant Wells Fargo was ordered to pay $3.7 billion in fines & refunds to customers by U.S. government regulators, the largest fine to date against the bank, which has spent years trying to rehabilitate itself after a series of scandals tied to its sales practices.

The amount is nearly quadruple the previous $1 billion penalty that Wells Fargo paid in 2018 to cover widespread consumer law violations.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Tuesday ordered Wells to repay $2 billion to consumers & enacted a $1.7 billion penalty against the bank. The bureau spelled out a laundry list of consumer financial law violations, from illegal fees & interest on auto loans & mortgages, as well as incorrectly applied overdraft fees against savings & checking accounts.

The bureau says the bad behavior by the bank impacted more than 16 million customers.

Wells Fargo has been repeatedly sanctioned by U.S. regulators for violations of consumer protections law going back to 2016, when Wells employees were found to have opened millions of accounts illegally in order to meet unrealistic sales goals. Since then, Wells has spent its time saying it’s cleaning up its act, only to be repeatedly fined for additional violations of consumer protection law.

The bank remains under a Federal Reserve order forbidding it from growing any larger until the Fed deems that its corporate culture problems are resolved. That order, originally enacted in 2018, was expected to last only a year or 2.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After a month-long trial & 9 days of deliberations, Los Angeles jurors on Monday found Harvey Weinstein guilty of the rape & sexual assault of just 1 of the 4 accusers he was charged with abusing.

But the 3 guilty counts involving an Italian actor & model known at the trial as Jane Doe 1 still struck a major blow against the disgraced movie mogul, and provided another #MeToo moment of reckoning, 5 years after he became a magnet for the movement.

Weinstein, 70, who is 2 years into a 23-year sentence for a rape & sexual assault conviction in New York that is under appeal, could get up to 24 years in prison in California when he’s sentenced.

He was found guilty of rape, forced oral copulation & another sexual misconduct count involving the woman who said he appeared uninvited at her hotel room door during a Los Angeles film festival in 2013.

“Harvey Weinstein forever destroyed a part of me that night in 2013 & I will never get that back. The criminal trial was brutal & Weinstein’s lawyers put me through hell on the witness stand, but I knew I had to see this through to the end, & I did,” the woman said in a statement after the verdict. “I hope Weinstein never sees the outside of a prison cell during his lifetime.”

BROOKLYN (WABC) -- A Brooklyn bishop whose robbery during a church service was captured on a live stream was arrested Monday for fraud, extortion & false statements.

Federal prosecutors accuse Lamor Whitehead of defrauding one of his parishioners out of part of her retirement savings, attempting to extort & defraud a businessman & lying to the FBI.

"Whitehead carried out several duplicitous schemes in order to receive funds from his victims.

Additionally, when speaking with authorities, Whitehead consciously chose to mislead and lie to them," FBI Assistant Director Michael J. Driscoll said.

The filing claims Whitehead convinced a woman to invest approximately $90,000 of her retirement savings with him but he instead spent the money on himself, including purchasing luxury goods.

Prosecutors also allege that Whitehead extorted a businessman for $5,000, then attempted to convince the same businessman to lend him $500,000 & cut him in on real estate deals.

Additionally, FBI investigators say Whitehead told agents he had just 1 cellphone when he in fact had a 2nd phone which he used regularly.

Whitehead faces potentially decades in prison.

His attorney, Dawn Florio, denied the charges saying, "Bishop Whitehead denies these allegations & we are going to fight them vigorously."

Back in July, Whitehead was leading a live-streamed church service at Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in Canarsie when three armed men stormed in.

He told investigators they stole hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from him & his wife.

2 suspects in the robbery were arrested.

Prosecutors say the charges against Whitehead predate that crime.

Drake has lost some big money after placing a bet on Argentina to win over France in the World Cup.

The Canadian rapper's $1 million bet on Argentina in the final FIFA match failed on Sunday, after the game saw an even score of 3-3, with a final score of 4-2.

While Argentina eventually topped France in a shootout, the "Rich Flex" artist bet in a market where extra time isn't counted & the result is determined based on the score after 90 minutes of play, according to Vulture.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, Drake showed users that he made the bet on Stakes & he would've earned $2.75 million if he had won.

Footage of Drake confirming his support for Argentina also appeared on social media, where 1 clip with a friend showed him saying "I'll take Argentina, he'll take France," while wearing Napoli gear.

By now, the Toronto-native rapper is likely used to losing bets in the sporting world, where some have even blamed game losses on the "Drake curse."

As of recent, Drake has struck out on large amounts of cash after betting on other matches.

Earlier this year, he lost a $2 million wager on a UFC fight after middleweight champion Israel Adesanya was defeated by Alex Pereira during UFC 281 on Nov. 12 in New York.

Drake also lost more than $200,000 in May after putting his money on Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc to win the Spanish Grand Prix.

Canadian sports fans also quipped at the rapper & his "curse" on social media after Team Canada was eliminated from this year's World Cup.

Ahead of the final 2022 World Cup match, Twitter users joked after learning Drake had placed his bet on Argentina, with some fearing his wager would jinx the team from winning.
