Chauncey Hawkins, the Harlem-based former Bad Boy Records rapper—aka Loon—was released from Florida’s FCI Coleman Low on June 29 after serving nearly nine years on a drug conspiracy charge.
Although a series of letters and petitions signed by celebrities and musicians had circulated over these past nine years, the real force behind Loon’s release came from a former prisoner himself, Weldon Angelos, who had served 13 years of a 55-year sentence for selling less than an ounce of weed.
Angelos, who set up the Weldon Project after his own release in 2016, had collected letters of support for Loon signed by entertainers such as Grammy Award-winning singer Faith Evans, former NBA champion Kevin Garnett, Roc Nation rapper Freeway, rapper Baby Bash, and others in the music and entertainment industries that eventually included Snoop Dogg and Kim Kardashian West.
But the breakthrough came when Angelos personally wrote and filed Loon’s 34-page court motion for compassionate release under the First Step Act after the COVID-19 outbreak in the prison system.
US District Judge Terrence Boyle apparently agreed that the coronavirus was an “extraordinary and compelling” reason to release a man who was not a danger to society. Judge Boyle converted Loon’s sentence to time served.
Loon was a member of Diddy’s Bad Boy camp. He was best known for his hit singles with P. Diddy entitled “I Need A Girl” featuring Usher and “I Need A Girl Part 2” featuring Ginuwine.
While incarcerated, Loon converted to Islam and changed his name to Amir Junaid Muhadith.

Breonna Taylor's mother knew in advance her daughter would become the first person other than Oprah to appear solo on the cover of O magazine ... because O told her herself.
Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ ... Oprah's team reached out to one of Breonna's family attorneys, Ben Crump, several weeks ago to see if she could get in touch directly with her mom, Tamika Palmer.
We're told there was no hesitation on the part of Breonna's family ... Oprah got Tamika's number and gave her a call in early June ... shortly after O posted a birthday tribute to Breonna on Instagram.
We're told it was the first time the two women had spoken, and it was just them on the call. That's when Oprah revealed her plan to Tamika to feature Breonna on the cover and ask for her blessing.
Our sources say Tamika was "in complete awe" of Oprah's gesture -- calling it an unbelievable moment -- and of course, she's honored O's doing something she's never done before as a tribute to Breonna.
As we reported ... Breonna's cover is historical, as it's the only time Oprah has not been on it. She stepped aside for one of her final print editions and dedicated it to Taylor by declaring, "If you turn a blind eye to racism, you become an accomplice to it." Emblazoned on the cover are the words ... "HER LIFE MATTERS."
Breonna was killed by Louisville police on March 13 in her own home in a botched raid over a "no-knock" warrant. So far, her death has resulted in no arrests, which sparked countless protests ... along with the death of George Floyd.
In an interview with "CBS This Morning," Oprah expressed her desire to protest as well, saying ... "if it were not for COVID I would be marching in the streets."
Fortunately, she found another impactful way to do her part.
Oprah Winfrey has penned a powerful column demanding justice for Breonna Taylor and honoring her memory in the September edition of O, the Oprah Magazine, which features Taylor on the cover.
On Thursday, O published Winfrey’s essay explaining the decision not to feature Winfrey on the cover of her magazine for the first time in 20 years. The moving piece also quotes Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, as she continues to seek consequences for the police officers involved in her daughter’s shooting.
“I think about Breonna Taylor often,” Winfrey wrote. “She was the same age as the two daughter-girls from my school in South Africa who’ve been quarantining with Stedman and me since March. In all their conversations I feel the promise of possibilities.
“Their whole lives shine with the light of hopefulness. That was taken away from Breonna in such a horrifying manner.”
Winfrey is one of several entertainment luminaries — including Beyoncé, Solange, Gabrielle Union, Lena Waithe, Kerry Washington and many more — who have used their elevated platforms to call for action after Taylor was shot and killed in her apartment by officers using a “no-knock” search warrant.
No-knock warrants have since been banned in Taylor’s hometown of Louisville, Ky., but the officers involved in her shooting — Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison and Myles Cosgrove — have not been arrested.

During her emotional visit to Wyoming to see husband Kanye West earlier this week, Kim Kardashian West asked him to abandon his unlikely presidential campaign and "focus on his mental health instead," a source tells PEOPLE.
"Kim urged Kanye to not move forward with running for president, but he won't listen," the source says.
Indeed, on Monday — the same day Kim, 39, was in Cody at their family's ranch to reunite with Kanye — his team filed paperwork trying to get him on the ballot as an independent candidate in Missouri and New Jersey ahead of the November election. (He has also filed in Illinois and Oklahoma, though he faces significant hurdles in qualifying across the country.)
On Saturday Kanye, 43, tweeted boastfully in all caps that "I CAN BEAT" former Vice President Joe Biden through write-in votes alone.
In a Forbes interview this month about his politics, Kanye criticized vaccination and Black History Month and said he would run the White House like a fictional country from Black Panther, though he noted “I don’t have all of the pieces in the puzzle.”
"God just gave me the clarity and said it’s time," he told Forbes of his run. "You know I was out there, ended up in the hospital, people were calling me crazy. I'm not crazy."

Moscow (CNN) Mikhail Khachaturyan's body was found on a staircase in a Moscow apartment block in July 2018, with dozens of knife wounds to his chest & neck.
A few hours before his death, he had returned from a psychiatric clinic, lined up his 3 daughters to chastise them for the messy apartment and pepper-sprayed their faces, according to investigators and the sisters' lawyers. His eldest daughter Krestina, who has asthma, fainted.
That was the night that the Khachaturyan sisters -- Krestina, 19, Angelina, 18, and Maria, 17 -- decided to kill their father. They attacked him with a hammer, a knife & the same can of pepper spray he had turned on them earlier.
Interrogation transcripts leaked to the press, and verified to CNN by a lawyer for one of the sisters, show that the women tried to inflict wounds on themselves to make it seem as if their father, who was sleeping at the start of the attack, had struck them with a knife first. Then they called the police & an ambulance.
The next day the 3 were arrested & confessed to the killing, saying they had endured years of sexual, physical & emotional abuse from their father.
Last summer the sisters were indicted on charges of premeditated murder, sparking an uproar among activists in Russia, which is grappling with a far-reaching domestic abuse problem.
After a long and tangled pre-trial investigation, their trial opens Friday in a Moscow courtroom. The 2 elder sisters, Krestina & Angelina, will stand trial together. Maria, who was a minor at the time of the killing but indicted after she turned 18, has also been deemed mentally unfit to commit a murder & will be tried separately on a murder charge.
Domestic violence experts, along with the sisters' defense team, say that in the absence of adequate protective mechanisms within law enforcement & the court system, their only choice was to defend themselves or eventually die at their father's hands.
In text conversations obtained from their father's phone and published on Facebook by Liptser, Mikhail Khachaturyan appeared to have threatened to kill them & sexually abuse them & their mother.
"I will beat you up for everything, I will kill you," says one text from April 2018, accusing them of having sexual relations with a male friend. "You are prostitutes & you will die as prostitutes."
The interrogation transcripts also painted a chilling picture of mental, physical and sexual abuse dating at least four years prior to the killing.
