RICHMOND, Va. -- An extremely bad case of flu will forever alter the life of a young Virginia man.
Deante Ross, 20, is connected to a ventilator at VCU Medical Center. He has been at the hospital since December 27 because of the virus.
His family first thought Ross had a cold, but his symptoms got worse.
"I had no idea that the flu could cause anything like this," his stepmother Diesha Ross said. "It hit him out of nowhere. He woke up, he was having extremely bad back pain and he was having trouble breathing."
Ross was rushed to Urgent Care where doctors delivered the troubling diagnosis.
"The flu led to pneumonia, then pneumonia led to a massive infection," Diesha Ross said.
Deante was flown to the hospital where he spent three days in a coma.
When he awoke, doctors told him they would have to amputate his fingers and legs.
"He's been so strong through all of this," Diesha Ross said.
Ross' family created a GoFundMePage to help cover medical bills and Deante's costs after he's released from the hospital.
"He's going to need prosthetics, eventually, for his fingers and his legs," Diesha said. "We want him to be able to live as normal a life as possible."
The family has asked the community to keep Deante in their thoughts.
"It's a long road to recovery. We're just taking it day by day," Diesha said. "Pray for us. Pray for our family. Pray for him."

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio — Police found marijuana in a car driven by Browns running back Kareem Hunt on Tuesday afternoon; he was cited for a traffic violation after he was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 90 in Rocky River.
According to the report, Rocky River police officers pulled the star player over on Jan. 21 for speeding. When officers approached the car, they smelled marijuana emanating from the vehicle.
Hunt was placed in the back of a police cruiser while authorities searched his car. Inside the vehicle, police found small amounts of marijuana in three different spots, the report stated.
Hunt was cited for speeding.
According to Rocky River Municipal Court, no charges have been filed with the court.
Although some communities have decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana, possession of less than 200 grams of marijuana is still a minor misdemeanor in Rocky River, according to the city's code of ordinances.
Hunt joined the Browns after being cut by the Kansas City Chiefs after he was caught on camera pushing and kicking a woman at a Cleveland hotel.

Antonio Brown was granted bail by a Broward County judge at a hearing Friday.
Brown's bond was set at $100,000 for the felony burglary with battery charge, with the total bond for the three charges being $110,000. He will also be required to be monitored by GPS, release his passport and guns, go through drug and alcohol testing, and get a mental health evaluation.
Brown is facing charges of felony burglary with battery, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and criminal mischief stemming from an alleged assault of a moving truck driver earlier this week. He turned himself in on Thursday to Broward County Jail, where he spent the night, according to his lawyer, Eric Schwartzreich.
Brown's lawyers said that he was "overcharged" and they believe that when they return to court again the charges will be very different.
Brown is accused of throwing a rock at the driver's moving truck before the alleged battery outside of Brown's home Tuesday, according to court documents obtained by TMZ.
The documents allege Brown later forced his way into the driver's side of the main cabin of the truck and began to physically strike the driver after a disagreement over payment escalated. Brown was then restrained by his associates.
Brown's trainer, Glenn Holt, was arrested Tuesday on a felony burglary with battery charge stemming from the incident. He was released Wednesday after posting a $20,000 bond.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A worker with anti-government views fatally stabbed his Trump-supporting boss at a highway construction site and placed an American flag next to the body after they got into a political argument, deputies in Florida said Tuesday.
Mason Toney, 28, was charged with first-degree murder for the killing of William Knight on Monday, according to an arrest affidavit from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Co-workers told investigators that Toney and Knight were friends outside of work despite their political differences. Knight was an “outspoken American” who was “pro-Donald Trump,” while co-workers described Toney as “anti-government and very outspoken in his beliefs that the government is bad and out to get him,” according to the arrest affidavit.
Workers at the Florida Turnpike construction site in metro Orlando told detectives that Knight had picked up Toney for work and they had been driving to different job sites when they began arguing. After arriving at the Turnpike site, the workers heard Knight yelling for help by an excavator. They ran over and saw Toney standing over Knight, stabbing him with a trowel, according to the arrest affidavit.
The other workers said they tried to stop Toney by throwing items at him, but he moved towards them with what they thought was a knife. He then jumped into a truck and took off. As he drove away, he called his co-workers terrorists, according to the affidavit.
Next to Knight’s body, the co-workers found an American flag and the flag’s packaging, the affidavit said.
Deputies in a neighboring county apprehended Toney several hours later.
Online court records did not list an attorney who could comment on Toney’s behalf. No bond was set and he remained at the Orange County Jail.

MIAMI (AP) — The mother of rapper Kodak Black and a group of lawyers called a news conference to discuss what they claim is his mistreatment in a federal prison in Miami. But they discovered that just an hour earlier, the rapper had been put on a prison bus to federal facility in Kentucky, a thousand miles away.
Attorneys Benjamin Crump, Devon Jacob and Sue-Ann Robinson said they haven’t been able to see the rapper in weeks. Jacobs said he had emailed and called the Bureau of Prisons to tell them they were coming to the detention center Wednesday.
“They knew we were coming out here, they knew we were doing this today,” Jacob said. “Their refusal to let him see his counsel is, in and of itself, a constitutional violation.”
The 22-year-old rapper, whose real name is Bill Kapri, was sentenced in November to more than three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to weapons charges. He was arrested just before a scheduled concert performance in May.
The rapper admitted in August that he falsified information on federal forms to buy four guns from a Miami-area gun shop on two separate occasions. He also faces drug, weapons and sexual assault charges in other states, and has had several previous arrests.
In a mid-December posting on Black’s Instagram account, he went public with allegations that he had been abused at the Federal Detention Center.
The Miami Herald reported that his mother, Marcelene Simmons, said that when she tried to see him before Christmas, she was falsely accused by prison officials of having contraband.
“They don’t want my son happy,” Simmons said. “That’s why they won’t let me see him.”
Black’s Instagram post offers his side of what happened before, during and after guards intervened in a fight between him and another inmate in October. Black claimed he was “laced with an unknown substance.” After an out-of-body experience and feeling like being possessed, he said, he went to the corrections officers’ office for help, but was denied medical attention. Shortly after, he got into a fight with an inmate.
The Herald reported that the Federal Bureau of Prisons and employees at the detention center declined to comment, but an assistant U.S. attorney and an FBI agent told the newspaper that Black fought with a corrections officer, got pepper-sprayed, and squeezed the guard’s testicles to the point where his abdomen and intestinal wall were breached.
The attorneys say any civil rights lawsuit remains on hold until they can see their client.
His mother wailed during the news conference.
“I want to make sure my son is OK!,” she said. “I don’t want my son to die. If they kill my son, I’ll kill myself, too. Please someone help me.”

Michelle Carter walked out of prison Thursday, more than three months before the end of her 15-month sentence for involuntary manslaughter after encouraging her teen boyfriend’s 2014 suicide through texts and phone calls.
Carter — whose original release date would have been May 5 — shortened her stay in the Bristol County House of Corrections through what is called “good time” credit, which awards up to 10 days per month to inmates who display exemplary behavior by attending programs and classes as well as working inside the jail, sheriff’s office spokesman Jonathan Darling previously told PEOPLE.
She began serving her sentence in February 2019, and ultimately served 11 months and 12 days. She now will begin a five-year period of probation, reports WCVB.
Carter’s conviction followed her role in the death of 18-year-old Conrad Roy III, who was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in his pickup truck on July 13, 2014, in the parking lot of a Kmart in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
In hundreds of texts and statements that came to light afterward, Carter, who was 17 at the time, was revealed to have pressured Roy to go through with his suicide.
