CHICAGO -- A federal judge has denied a request by singer R. Kelly to be released from jail on bail due to the coronavirus pandemic
Kelly, 53, is in jail at the Metropolitan Correctional Facility in Chicago and faces charges in Illinois, Minnesota and New York stemming from alleged sexual abuses of underage girls.
Last month, the singer's attorneys filed a motion calling to be granted his release because of COVID-19.
In her ruling Tuesday morning, Eastern District of New York Judge Ann Donnelly ruled that Kelly, "has not established compelling reasons warranting his release. At present, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the MCC in Chicago."
Kelly was arrested in July on sex charges. He denies abusing anyone.
The federal charges in Chicago accuse Kelly of filming himself having sex with underage girls and of paying off potential witnesses in his 2008 trial - at which he was acquitted - to get them to change their stories.
In December, he pleaded not guilty via a video feed to added charges in New York that he schemed to pay for a fake ID for an unnamed female a day before he married R&B singer Aaliyah, then 15, in a secret ceremony in 1994.

Rio Rancho, New Mexico – He was an Albuquerque Police officer, but now he’s behind bars, accused of beating up his girlfriend. Newly released police video shows the moment the former officer found himself in handcuffs.
Jeffrey Wharton resigned shortly after he was arrested last month. Rio Rancho police video shows officers arresting the 31-year-old while he was still on duty.
“Right now, we do have a warrant for your arrest. It’s for aggravated battery against a household member, two counts of that. Kidnapping and interference with communication” said a Rio Rancho detective.
According to the criminal complaint, Wharton beat his girlfriend so badly, she had several gashes on her head and face. Police say her injuries were so severe, she had to be taken to the hospital where she was diagnosed with a brain bleed.
Police say a part of the beating was also caught on the couple’s Ring camera and shows Wharton, at one point, dragging her with a chokehold. After police cuffed the former officer, lapel video shows Rio Rancho officers cutting off Wharton’s Albuquerque Police uniform while he’s cuffed.
Officers even tried to get Wharton to tell his side of the story, but he didn’t have much to say after his charges were read to him.
Detective: I do want to give you the opportunity to talk to us and tell us your side of the story. Do you want to take that opportunity?
Wharton: Not after hearing that, no.
Detective: Okay.
Wharton was taken to the Sandoval County Detention Center. Police video shows he still did not have anything to say, but he clearly looked distraught while waiting to be processed in the jail. Earlier this month, a judge decided to keep him locked up until trial.
At the moment, Wharton’s attorney is asking a judge to release him, citing coronavirus concerns. Prosecutors, however, argue his release would not ensure the safety of the community or the victim. A judge is set to hear that motion next month.
APD says Wharton had been with the department since November 2010. He was a senior officer with the department.

Carrollton police are looking for a woman they say claims to have COVID-19 and is "willfully spreading it."
Police will charge 18-year-old Lorraine Maradiaga with making a terroristic threat, according to a tweet from the department.
"We have no confirmation Maradiaga is actually a threat to public health," the tweet said. "We are, however, taking her social media actions very seriously."
The Snapchat video circulating on social media shows the woman going to what appears to be a drive-thru testing site.
In the video, a nurse is heard telling the person behind the steering wheel that they need to go home while they wait for results.
In a series of videos later, the woman, who police say is Maradiaga, shows herself shopping at what she claims to be Walmart.
"I'm here at Walmart about to infest every (expletive), because if I'm going down, all you (expletive) are going down," she says in the Snapchat video.
The video later shows the woman in her car, coughing into the camera.
"If you want to get the coronavirus and (expletive) die, call me," the person in the video says.
She continues, "I'll meet you up and (cough, cough) and I will shorten your life."
A spokesperson for the Carrollton Police Department said officers went to Maradiaga's home on Sunday, but she was not there.
Police said her family was cooperating with them and hoped the 18-year-old surrenders.

YNW Melly is begging a judge to let him out of prison ... because he says he's on the verge of dying from COVID-19.
The rapper's lawyer, Bradford Cohen, filed legal docs, obtained by TMZ, claiming the rapper -- in prison awaiting his murder trial -- is suffering from severe chills, heavy labored breathing, headaches and body aches since he tested positive for the coronavirus.
Cohen says Melly weighs 114 pounds and has NOT been monitored by medical personnel every hour like they're supposed to. And, there's this ... Cohen claims Melly's been holed up in a cell with another inmate who also has COVID-19 ... and there's fear "if the virus can be mutated or passed reoccurring between individuals."
Cohen claims the there's a lack of preparedness by the jail for this type of epidemic ... as "they have not given them masks, or cleaning supplies that would be beneficial regarding his recovery. This is against all recommendations of the Surgeon General and CDC."
Melly's asking the judge if he can get out of prison and be placed on house arrest and treated at a medical facility at his own expense. Melly, of course, has been sitting in a Florida jail for more than a year after being arrested and charged in the double murder of two of his friends.

Shenzhen, in southeastern China, has become the first city in the country to ban the consumption of cats and dogs, the government announced Thursday.
Under new rules which will come into effect May 1, the government said it will be illegal to eat animals raised as pets.
In February, following the coronavirus outbreak, China passed a law to ban the consumption of wild animals.
Now Shenzhen will prohibit the consumption of state-protected wild animals and other terrestrial wild animals taken from the wild, as well as captive-bred and farmed terrestrial wild species.
In addition, the consumption of animals raised as pets, such as cats and dogs will also be banned.
Animals that can be consumed include pig, cattle, sheep, donkey, rabbit, chicken, duck, goose, pigeon, quail, as well as aquatic animals who are not banned by other laws or regulations.
"If convicted, they will be subjected to a fine of 30 times of the wild animal's value, if the animal is above the value of 10,000CNY [$1400 USD]," announced authorities.
The coronavirus outbreak is thought to have started at a wildlife market in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and authorities have acknowledged they need to bring the lucrative wildlife industry under control if it is to prevent another outbreak.
However ending the trade will be hard. The cultural roots of China's use of wild animals run deep, not just for food but also for traditional medicine, clothing, ornaments and even pets.
This isn't the first time Chinese officials have tried to contain the trade. In 2003, civets -- mongoose-type creatures -- were banned and culled in large numbers after it was discovered they likely transferred the SARS virus to humans. The selling of snakes was also briefly banned in Guangzhou after the SARS outbreak.
But today dishes using the animals are still eaten in parts of China.
