TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Washington state prison inmate was sentenced to another 24 years in prison on top of his current sentence after he killed his cellmate, the man who raped his younger sister.

KHQ reported Shane Goldsby, 26, beat 70-year-old Robert Munger to death in July 2020 at the Airway Heights Correction Center in Airway Heights, Washington.

Goldsby attacked Munger from behind and struck him in the face 14 times. He was captured on video stomping on his head at least four times before walking away, court documents say.

According to reports, Munger had molested a number of victims, including Goldsby’s sister, and was serving a 43-year prison sentence for child sex crimes.

In a July 2020 interview, Goldsby told KHQ Munger had taunted him with details about the abuse, which happened years before the attack.

“He kept… giving me details about what happened and what he did. About the photos and videos of him doing this stuff, and it was building up,” Goldsby said.

“You put me in the same cell as this dude,” he added. “I feel set up. I’m the victim.”

According to his lawyer, Goldsby was abused by his drug-addicted mother and went through 10 different foster homes. He eventually reconnected with his mother and the two began using drugs together, the Spokesman reported.

Goldsby had been imprisoned for stealing a police vehicle and leading multiple agencies on a police chase that ended when he rammed into a patrol vehicle, injuring a trooper inside.

The Washington Department of Corrections said an investigation into the incident found all protocols had been followed in the events leading up to the attack, and there was little staff could have done to prevent the murder. It also found there was no reason to suspect that Goldsby and Munger knew each other when they were assigned to the same cell.

Vanessa Bryant has settled a lawsuit filed by her mother, TMZ Sports has learned.

Sofia Laine had claimed she worked as a nanny for Vanessa and Kobe for nearly 20 years and said she was owed $200,000 ... computed at a rate of $96 an hour.

She also claimed Kobe promised to take care of her for the rest of her life. She says after Kobe died, Vanessa kicked her out of the home Kobe had allegedly bought for her.

Vanessa called the lawsuit "frivolous, disgraceful and unimaginably hurtful." She went on ... "My husband never promised my mother anything, and he would be so disappointed in her behavior and lack of empathy."

As for getting money for working as a nanny, Vanessa said, "I have supported her for nearly 20 years, and was never my or Kobe's personal assistant, nor was she a nanny."

Vanessa went on ... "In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers," adding, "As of ten years ago, our kids were full-time students and athletes and I didn't have another child until 2016."

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but the case is over.

NEW YORK (AP) — Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, a founding member of the long-running soul-funk band Kool & the Gang known for such hits as “Celebration” and “Get Down On It,” has died. He was 70.

He died peacefully in his sleep Saturday in New Jersey, where he was a resident of Montclair, according to a statement from his representative.

Thomas was the alto sax player, flutist and percussionist. He served as master of ceremonies at the band’s shows. His last appearance with the group was July Fourth at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Born Feb. 9, 1951, in Orlando, Florida, Thomas was known for his prologue on the band’s 1971 hit, “Who’s Gonna Take the Weight.” Known for his hip clothes and hats, he was also the group’s wardrobe stylist. In the early days, he served as their “budget hawk,” carrying their earnings in a paper bag stuffed into the bell of his horn, the statement said.

In 1964, seven teen friends created the group’s unique bland of jazz, soul and funk, at first calling themselves the Jazziacs. They went through several iterations before settling on Kool & the Gang in 1969. The group’s other founders are brothers Ronald and Robert Bell, Spike Mickens, Ricky Westfield, George Brown and Charles Smith.

Ronald Bell died Sept. 9, 2020, at home in the U.S. Virgin Islands at age 68.

The band has earned two Grammy Awards and seven American Music Awards. They were honored in 2014 with a Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award. Their music is heavily sampled and featured on film sound tracks, including those for “Rocky,” “Saturday Night Fever” and “Pulp Fiction.”

Among those Thomas is survived by are his wife, Phynjuar Saunders Thomas, daughter Tuesday Rankin and sons David Thomas and Devin Thomas.

More than a year after George Floyd’s death sparked a failed push to abolish the Minneapolis Police Department, activists & several City Council members are trying again, with a well-funded initiative that would ask voters in November whether the department — disparaged by critics for what they say is an enduring culture of brutality — should be dismantled.

In its place would be a public safety department that employs a “comprehensive public health approach” & licensed peace officers “if necessary.” The new department would no longer be under the sole command of the mayor’s office, which is significant given that incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey opposes abolishing the police department while a majority of City Council members supports the idea.

More than 30 local groups are pushing for change under the “Yes 4 Minneapolis” banner. They gathered 20,000 signatures to get the measure on the ballot — almost twice the number necessary & have raised about $1 million, including $500,000 from Open Society Policy Center, which has ties to billionaire George Soros.

“What we knew as public safety — which is only the police right now, the only option that we have — was unacceptable,” said Brian Fullman, lead organizer with one of the groups, Barbershop and Black Congregation Cooperative. “The murder of George Floyd ignited a lot of historical pain & disrespect that we have been going through & we made the decision that we no longer wanted to have what we have now as the only option for public safety.”

A majority of City Council members first began pushing to eliminate the police department soon after Floyd’s death, but they failed to meet deadlines to get it on the ballot last November. The Rev. JaNaé Bates, a leader of the Yes 4 Minneapolis campaign, said the ease with which the campaign gathered signatures shows the momentum for change is still there more than a year after Floyd’s death.

“The residents of Minneapolis really were the ones who made the call for this, who were like, we can’t just let this lesson that took place in the summer to be something that fizzles out, and then what? We just wait for the next person to be killed by the police?” she said.

All of Mpls — a new group that has raised more than $109,000 — will begin campaigning against the proposal in the coming weeks with door knocking, community events, mailers & digital ads through the fall.

LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana woman charged in her husband’s fatal shooting used an axe to cut off his legs before trying to enlist her two teenage children in a failed plan to burn his remains.

Thessalonica Allen, of LaPorte is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse & several other counts in the July 28 fatal shooting of her husband, Randy Allen. During the 34-year-old woman’s initial hearing Wednesday, the judge entered a not guilty plea on her behalf & appointed her a public defender.

In court documents, authorities say a Michigan man who has a child with Thessalonica Allen told police about the killing last Thursday, saying she contacted him claiming her husband had been beating their child.

When the man entered her apartment, she showed him her husband’s body in a closet & sought his help moving it to her vehicle, but he declined.

The man told officers that Thessalonica Allen threw a gun out of the car as she dropped him off at his Michigan home & told him “she had to shoot Randy because he was beating on her and the kids,” the court documents state.

After police arrested Allen in LaPorte, she confessed to shooting her husband following a physical altercation & told officers “he beats me,” the charges allege.

Officers later found her husband’s partially dismembered body inside a tote in their apartment.

“She then admitted she had to cut Randy’s legs off because she wasn’t able to fit him inside the tote,” & had used an axe to remove the limbs, police said in court documents.

Her two teenage children told officers that they did not see any physical altercation on the day Randy Allen died. They said the day before he was killed, he was helping them do homework on a computer when he found a website their mother had visited.

After he confronted Thessalonica Allen about the website when she got home, they argued & the children heard a loud bang. The children said they then saw Randy Allen on a bedroom floor & he asked them to call 911, but their mother ordered them not to do it & sent them to their room.

She later awakened them in the middle of the night to ask them for help dragging his body from the apartment to her vehicle, but it was too heavy for them to move.

The children said their mother came home the next day with cleaning supplies and an axe, and awoke them a second straight night, this time for help putting the body into a tote. They then noticed that his legs had been removed.

The children said they & their mother made additional failed attempts to load the body into a vehicle. They told officers that their mother “had plans to take the vehicle & body to South Bend and set it on fire.”

Video After The Jump

Kin of the Brooklyn woman killed by a female shooter in a brazen caught-on-video crime say the victim was lured to her death with a phone call — and that her murderer was a “family friend” they recognized from the footage.

“She was on the block with us, she got a phone call, and when she got the phone call, she said, ‘I’ll be right back,’ ” longtime pal Shawn Johnson, 43, recalled Friday, referring to victim Delia Johnson, 42.

“Twenty minutes later, somebody called me and told me she got shot,” he said of Delia. “I told him he was lying. I was just standing here with her.”

Police released two zoomed-in photos of the suspected killer Friday — and family members said they recognize her from the snapshot showing the woman’s face.

“I know her!” exclaimed Delia’s mother, Delia Barry. “Oh my God, oh my God, she used to stay with us. She slept in my bed, ate my food.”

One of the victim’s younger sisters, Hadijah Pendley, called the suspect “a family friend who came to our family events, celebrations, holidays — whatever you want to call it, she came.”

Cops declined comment. The motive is still unclear.

Another sister, Khadyah Barry, said, “I know in my heart that somebody called her and knew what it was and set my sister up.

“Nobody can tell me otherwise,” she said.

Delia was talking on the phone on a crowded Prospect Heights street Tuesday around 9:40 p.m. when an assailant with a purse walked up to her and blasted her in the head before nonchalantly walking back to a double-parked SUV and driving away.

A teenage mother whose baby boy drowned while taking a bath with her is facing charges of murder & child cruelty.

Police say they believe Anslie Brantley, 19, from Georgia, had taken drugs & fallen asleep in the bathtub with her son. When she woke up, the 10-month-old was unresponsive. He was taken to hospital & pronounced dead later that day.

Ms Brantley was taken into custody on Friday & charged with second-degree felony murder & second-degree child cruelty over the death of the 10-month old.

A deputy from Coweta County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about an unresponsive child in June. He said Ms Brantley’s mother, Kelli Gordon, 36, told him she tried to check on her daughter & the child several times “since she had been in the bathroom for some time,” but then “went back to watching TV.”

About 10 or 20 minutes later she heard screams from her daughter, who had found the baby not breathing. Ms Gordon told the deputy that she “saw how blue he was & he was cold, real cold.”

The deputy reported that Ms Brantley was “sitting in a chair with only a towel wrapped around her crying,” & “not in a state where she was willing to speak” with him.

During the investigation, detectives said they discovered that Ms Brantley had taken drugs before she got into the bath with her son & fallen asleep. Officers found methamphetamine in the home & charged Ms Gordon with possession of narcotics.

Ms Gordon’s five other children have reportedly been placed in the care of the Georgia Department of Family and Children’s Services.

Ms Brantley is being held in Coweta County Jail & was denied bond. Ms Gordon is also being detained on charges unrelated to the death or the drug charge.

The NBA has opened up investigations into possible tampering violations involving two sign-and-trade deals completed in free agency, Chicago's acquisition of New Orleans's Lonzo Ball & Miami's acquisition of Toronto's Kyle Lowry.

The NBA's probe will examine illegal contact among teams and players ahead of the opening of free agency on Monday at 6 p.m. ET. Team executives, players agents & players have been notified of the opening of the league office's investigations.

The NBA instituted more stringent penalties in these cases in 2019, including raising the maximum fine for teams to $10 million & the possibility of suspending team executives, forfeiting draft picks & even the voiding of contracts. Team executives can also have their communications -- such as telephone records, texts & emails randomly audited.

Sign-and-trade arrangements are more complicated & time-consuming than typical free-agent player signings, often needing a greater level of discussion & negotiation to complete.

New Orleans agreed to trade Ball, a restricted free agent, to Chicago on a four-year, $85 million contract for Garrett Temple on a new three-year, $15.5 million contract & guard Tomas Satoransky. That deal has yet to be finalized with the league office & could look different in its final form.

Miami negotiated a three-year, $85 million deal with Lowry in the sign-and-trade that sent guard Goran Dragic & forward Precious Achiuwa to the Raptors. The Heat guaranteed Dragic's $19.4 million team option on Sunday, which allowed them to use him in the sign-and-trade deal.
