The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal of a Pennsylvania court ruling that overturned comedian Bill Cosby's sexual assault conviction.
Why it matters: Cosby had been sentenced to 3–10 years in prison for drugging and molesting a woman in 2004 before his conviction was overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
**Cosby was one of the first celebrities convicted of sexual assault in the #MeToo era.
The big picture: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in June that an agreement he struck to provide testimony in a civil lawsuit in 2005 and 2006 should have given him immunity in the case.
**Cosby, who has been accused of sexual misconduct or rape by more than 60 women, was released from prison last year.
**Prosecutors asked the Supreme Court to review the ruling that led to Cosby's conviction being overturned and the origins of the testimonial agreement.

Duane Parham is a national and international Smooth Jazz, Gospel and R&B saxophonist whose music spans several decades. Parham is a legend in the Detroit area, both due to his social connections as well as his inspiring music. As the founder of The Educational Arts Society, a nonprofit, he dedicates time to teach and fund aspiring young musicians, providing music to senior homes and helps preserve Detroit’s rich music history. The movie documentary “The Unsung Musicians of the Motown Empire,” and the song “Detroit City is Coming Back” reveal his deep love for the city he calls home.

Father-of-2 Tom Mansfield had miscalculated the amount of powder he was meant to use on kitchen scales.
An inquest in Ruthin heard the 29-year-old from Colwyn Bay fell ill straight after drinking his mixture on 5 January 2021.
Reaching a conclusion of misadventure, coroner John Gittins said the cause of death was caffeine toxicity.
Caffeine is used by some gym-goers, with some fitness websites recommending it for improving sports performance in certain doses.
However, experts have warned that when taking powders there is a risk of consuming over the recommended amount.
On Tuesday an inquest heard Mr Mansfield began clutching his chest & complaining his heart was beating fast after consuming the product.
Minutes later, after going to lie down, he began foaming at the mouth. His wife Suzannah alerted neighbors & family & called an ambulance
Paramedics tried to resuscitate him for 45 minutes but was later pronounced dead at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire.
The lowest weight measured by Mr Mansfield's scale was more than 6 times the maximum recommended dose
The hearing was told the scales Mr Mansfield had used to measure the powder had a weighing range from 2 to 5,000 grams, whereas he was attempting to weigh a recommended dose of 60-300mg.
It was this miscalculation which led to a massive overdose.
A post-mortem examination showed Mr Mansfield had caffeine levels of 392mg per liter of blood.
Caffeine levels would typically be 2 to 4 milligrams per liter if someone had drunk a cup of filter coffee.
Mr Gittins said it appeared Mr Mansfield had been aiming for the "mid-range of the recommended dose", but "he got his math wrong" & there were "unintended consequences" which had a fatal effect.

WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner was arrested last month at a Moscow airport after Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges.
The Russian Customs Service said Saturday that the cartridges were identified as containing oil derived from cannabis, which could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. The customs service identified the person arrested as a player for the U.S. women’s team and did not specify the date of her arrest. Russian media reported the player was Griner & her agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, did not dispute those reports.
“We are aware of the situation with Brittney Griner in Russia & are in close contact with her, her legal representation in Russia, her family, her teams & the WNBA & NBA,” Kagawa Colas said Saturday. “As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are not able to comment further on the specifics of her case but can confirm that as we work to get her home, her mental & physical health remain our primary concern.”
On Saturday, the State Department issued a “do not travel” advisory for Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine & urged all U.S. citizens to depart immediately, citing factors including “the potential for harassment against U.S. citizens by Russian government security officials” & “the Embassy’s limited ability to assist” Americans in Russia.
Griner, who plays for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, has played in Russia for the last seven years in the winter, earning over $1 million per season — more than quadruple her WNBA salary. She last played for her Russian team UMMC Ekaterinburg on Jan. 29 before the league took a two-week break in early February for the FIBA World Cup qualifying tournaments.
More than a dozen WNBA players were playing in Russia & Ukraine this winter, including league MVP Jonquel Jones & Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigley of the champion Chicago Sky. The WNBA confirmed Saturday that all players besides Griner had left both countries.
The 31-year-old Griner has won two Olympic gold medals with the U.S., a WNBA championship with the Mercury and a national championship at Baylor. She is a seven-time All-Star.
“Brittney Griner has the WNBA’s full support & our main priority is her swift & safe return to the United States,” the league said in a statement.

A Green Bay, Wisconsin, woman was charged with a gruesome murder after a mother discovered her son's severed head in a bucket in her basement.
Police charged 24-year-old Taylor Schabusiness with intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse & sexual assault on Tuesday.
The mother of the victim, a 25-year-old man identified as Shad Thyrion, called the police at about 3:25 a.m. on Feb. 23 after finding his severed head in a bucket in her basement.
When police arrived, they found the severed head & dried blood on a mattress in the basement.
Upon learning that Schabusiness was the last person to see the man, they found her at her home. Police said she had blood on her clothing & they discovered a crockpot with “additional human body parts including legs" inside.
After obtaining a warrant, police said they found additional body parts of the man at the first home, including a "male organ" in the bucket & an upper torso in a storage tote.
Police said that Schabusiness told them she and the man had smoked methamphetamine & began having sex with each other, but at some point she went "crazy" & strangled the man with her bare hands.
“Schabusiness responded that the police were going to have fun trying to find all of the organs as she dismembered the body. Schabusiness stated all of the body parts should be in the basement. Schabusiness stated there should be a foot or a leg in the minivan."
The complaint alleges that Schabusiness told police she intended to bring all the body parts with her but that she got paranoid & lazy, saying it was likely the meth that made her feel that way.
Police say she used a bread knife to mutilate the body. The complaint says she asked detectives if they knew "what it was like to love something so much that you kill it."
Bail was set for Schabusiness at $2 million because of the violent nature of the charges.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California woman whose disappearance and mysterious reappearance set off a frantic three-week search more than five years ago was arrested Thursday on charges of lying to federal agents about being kidnapped & defrauding the state’s victim compensation board of $30,000.
Sherri Papini, 39, of Redding, was found on Thanksgiving Day in 2016 after weeks of searching in California & several nearby states, with bindings on her body & injuries including a swollen nose & a “brand” on her right shoulder.
She had been reported missing Nov. 2. She told authorities at the time that she had been kidnapped at gunpoint by two Hispanic women, even providing descriptions to an FBI sketch artist along with extensive details of her purported abduction.
In reality, authorities said, she was staying with a former boyfriend nearly 600 miles away from her home in Orange County, in Southern California, and hurt herself to back up her false statements.
Papini does not yet have an attorney because she was just arrested, Talbert’s office said. Her first court appearance has not yet been set.
She was still lying about the kidnapping in August 2020 when she was interviewed by a federal agent & a Shasta County sheriff’s detective, the charges allege. They showed her evidence indicating she had not been abducted & warned her that it was a crime to lie to a federal agent.
But she still made false statements, the charges allege.
She also was reimbursed more than $30,000 by the California Victim’s Compensation Board based on the false story. They included money for visits to her therapist for “treatment for anxiety & PTSD” & for the ambulance ride to the hospital after she surfaced near Sacramento.
She faces a mail fraud charge related to the reimbursement requests that carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, while lying to a federal officer has a maximum five-year sentence.

The Supreme Court reinstated the death sentence for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who attacked the Boston Marathon in 2013, in a decision announced Friday.
It was a 6-3 decision, with the opinion written by Justice Clarence Thomas. Justices Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor dissented.
"Dzhokhar Tsarnaev committed heinous crimes. The Sixth Amendment nonetheless guaranteed him a fair trial before an impartial jury. He received one. The judgment of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit is reversed," Thomas wrote in the decision.
Breyer in the dissent said Tsarnaev should have been allowed to present evidence that his older brother Tamerlan had previously committed three brutal murders to bolster his case that he "radicalized him."
