Las Vegas police Capt. Dori Koren said officers received multiple 911 calls about a stabbing near Las Vegas Blvd. and Sands Drive at about 11:40 a.m.

Capt. Koren said officers responded to the scene, and with the help of security partners, were able to take the suspect into custody “very quickly” and were then able to render aide to the multiple victims.

Capt. Dori Koren said that as of now, there were eight people stabbed and one suspect as part of the incident.

Of the victims, Capt. Koren says two people have died and three are in critical condition. Police say the remaining victims are in stable condition.

The weapon that was recovered, according to Capt. Koren, was a “large kitchen knife.”

UMC Trauma shared that it had received five patients from the stabbing incident.

According to UMC, one of its patients is in critical condition and one patient has passed away. UMC said two of the patients are in serious condition and one is in fair condition.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A baby girl, her parents & uncle were found dead in a central California orchard & days after they were kidnapped at gunpoint from their business.

“Our worst fears have been confirmed,” Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke said.

Warnke said the victims were close to each other when found by a farm worker tending to an almond orchard in a remote area near the town of Dos Palos, a town about 30 miles south of Merced where the family was kidnapped on Monday.

He said he believed the family was killed before their relatives reported them missing Monday.

The grim announcement came after authorities earlier Wednesday released surveillance video of a man kidnapping 8-month-old Aroohi Dheri; her mother Jasleen Kaur, 27; father Jasdeep Singh, 36; and uncle Amandeep Singh, 39, on Monday.

Warnke said the kidnapper made no ransom demands but that he believed it was a financially motivated crime.

Authorities said they were taken by a convicted robber who tried to kill himself a day after the kidnappings. Jesus Salgado, 48, was in critical condition when taken into custody but has been talking to police.

The 4 family members were taken from their business in Merced, a city of 86,000 people about 125 miles southeast of San Francisco.

Surveillance video released earlier Wednesday showed the suspect first walking by the property before talking to one of the men. Later, it shows him leading the men, who had their hands zip-tied behind their backs, into the back seat of Amandeep Singh’s pickup truck. The suspect then went back to the trailer that served as the business office and led Jasleen Kaur, who was carrying her baby in her arms, out and into the truck before the suspect then drove away.

BANGKOK (AP) — A former policeman burst into a day care center in northeastern Thailand on Thursday, killing dozens of children & teachers & then firing on more people as he fled in the deadliest rampage in the nation’s history.

The assailant, who authorities said was fired from the force earlier this year because of a drug offense, took his own life after killing his own wife & child at home.

A witness said staff at the day care locked the door when they saw the assailant approaching with a gun, but he shot his way in. In footage posted online after the attack, frantic family members could be heard weeping outside the day care & 1 image showed the floor of 1 room smeared with blood & sleeping mats scattered about. Pictures of the alphabet & other colorful decorations adorned the walls.

At least 37 people were killed in the attack, according to police spokesman Archayon Kraithong. Another 12 people were wounded. At least 24 of the dead were children, mostly preschoolers.

Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old former police officer Panya Kamrap. Police Maj. Gen. Paisal Luesomboon told PPTV in an interview that he was fired from the force earlier this year because of drug-related offenses.

In the attack he used multiple weapons, including a handgun, a shotgun & a knife.

Local police chief Damrongsak Kittiprapha told reporters that the suspect was a sergeant on the force before he was fired & that the main weapon he used was a 9mm pistol that he had purchased himself.

KOREATOWN, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man who was killed in a shooting in Koreatown was a rapper, known as Half Ounce, and a father of three children with his wife expecting a fourth.

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday in the 700 block South New Hampshire Avenue. Officers responded to numerous calls of shots fired and found the victim lying in a planter at a nearby apartment building.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Further details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting were not immediately disclosed.

The victim, officially identified as Latauriisha O'Brien, was a local rapper who also worked for UPS.

"He was an artist around here. He was popular. He was coming up still... but it's such a sad story to hear," said Steven Gonzalez.

O'Brien was from Inglewood and did not live in Koreatown. Investigators are trying to determine what he may have been doing in the area.

No arrests have been made. The shooter, described as man wearing dark clothing, fled the scene in a possible dark SUV.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — A Purdue University student was arrested Wednesday in the killing of his roommate in their campus dorm room.

Ji Min Sha, a 22-year-old cybersecurity major from Seoul, South Korea, was arrested on a preliminary murder charge in the killing of 20-year-old Varun Manish Chheda, a 20-year-old data science major from Indianapolis, Purdue Police Chief Lesley Wiete said.

Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said an autopsy determined that Chheda died of “multiple sharp-force traumatic injuries.”

Wiete said Sha, who goes by the nickname “Jimmy,” called police at around 12:45 a.m. “alerting us to the death of his roommate” in their first-floor dorm room on the campus in West Lafayette, which is about 65 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

He has not been formally charged. Wiete said investigators don’t know why Chheda was killed, but they think he was awake at the time.

“I believe this was unprovoked and senseless.” Wiete told reporters outside the residence hall.

Students living near the crime scene were moved to other rooms & the university provided counselors for those who need it.

Purdue President Mitch Daniels said in a statement that “this is as tragic an event as we can imagine happening on our campus & our hearts & thoughts go out to all of those affected by this terrible event.”

PALM COAST, Fla. (Fox35 Orlando) - Bodycam video shows the shocking moments an armed Florida man allegedly used a 1-year-old child as a human shield during a standoff with Flagler County deputies.

Deputies say 27-year-old Brandon Matthew Douglas Leohner kidnapped his girlfriend's child while armed with a gun & then led deputies on a chase that ended at a McDonald's in Palm Coast.

Leohner then allegedly drove into the nearby McDonald’s parking lot & got out of the vehicle near the drive-thru with the child in his arms, using the child as a human shield & refusing to obey law enforcement commands to put the child down. Bodycam video from the sheriff's office showed the exchange between deputies & Leohner.

"Put the baby down!" one deputy yells to Leohner. "Put the kid down!"

After a brief standoff, deputies deployed a taser & Leohner dropped to the ground. Deputies are seen carrying the child to safety.

Moments later, the video shows Leohner up and appearing to try and run away until a K-9 grabs him & deputies use a taser on him again. He was then placed in handcuffs & paramedics were called in to treat his wounds.

Sadly, the child is heard saying "Dada" over and over again during the incident.

"Here is a case of a domestic situation turning violent, putting a 1-year-old child & innocent drivers in danger," said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. "Deputies were confronted with a very chaotic situation & a very combative individual that was putting his child at risk by using the child as a shield. Fortunately, the child was not hurt & was quickly reunited with his mother."

Leohner was arrested & is facing charges of kidnapping, using a minor as a shield, resisting with violence, child neglect, fleeing & eluding & reckless driving.

The Associated Press spoke with a dozen people in rapidly growing displacement camps during a visit to southern Somalia in late September. All say they’ve received little aid, or none. A day’s meal might be plain rice or just black tea. Many camp residents, overwhelmingly women & children, beg from neighbors, or go to sleep hungry.

Mothers walk for days or weeks through bare landscapes in search of help, at times finding that the withered, feverish child strapped to them has died along the way.

“We’d grieve, stop for a while, pray,” Adego Abdinur says. “We’d bury them beside the road.”

She holds her naked 1-year-old in front of her new home, a fragile hut of plastic sacks & fabric lashed together with cord & stripped branches. It’s one of hundreds scattered over the dry land. 

The home the 28-year-old Abdinur left was far superior — a farm of maize & dozens of livestock in the community where she was born & raised. The family was self-sufficient. Then the water dried up & their 4-legged wealth began to die.

“When we lost the last goat, we realized there was no way to survive,” Abdinur says. She & her 6 children walked 186 miles here, following rumors of assistance along with thousands of other people on the move.

“We have seen so many children dying because of hunger,” she says.

At the heart of this crisis, in areas where famine likely will be declared, is an Islamic extremist group linked to al-Qaida. An estimated 740,000 of the drought’s most desperate people live in areas under the control of the al-Shabab extremists. To survive, they must escape.

Al-Shabab’s grip on large parts of southern & central Somalia was a major contributor to deaths in the 2011 famine. Much aid wasn’t let into its areas & many starving people weren’t let out. Somalia’s president, who has survived 3 al-Shabab attempts on his life, has described the group as “mafia shrouded with Islam.”

Those who escaped al-Shabab now cling to a bare existence. As what should be the rainy season arrives, they wake in camps under a purple sky, or a gray one offering the tiniest specks of moisture.
