(Reuters) - At least one gunman opened fire at Fort Hood on Wednesday, injuring an unknown number of people at the U.S. Army base in central Texas that was the scene of a shooting rampage in 2009, officials said.
"There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and injuries are reported. Emergency crews are on the scene. No further details are known at this time," the base said in a statement.
All personnel on post are asked to shelter in place.

Local news reports said there may be two suspected shooters, while CNN reported that one shooter was believed to be dead, citing a U.S. official.
The number of shooters or casualties could not be confirmed by Reuters.
NBC reported that 8 people were wounded in the shooting, 4 of them critically.
News of the shooting, the third such incident at a military base in the United States in about six months, was being relayed to President Barack Obama, the White House said.
"The president has been informed of reports of a shooting at Fort Hood. He'll continue to receive updates on the situation throughout the evening," principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters.
The base has been put on lockdown and police were securing its perimeter, police and military officials said. Helicopters could be seen circling the base in live TV footage broadcast from the scene.
Authorities advised those on the post to stay away from windows and to keep doors closed and locked.
Central Texas College, which has a Fort Hood campus, ordered an immediate evacuation of all students and staff, and canceled all classes.

Like most of uf who have listened to Eminem's song "Rap God," French rapper/beat boxer Eklips was amazed to hear the hip hop legend spit 101 words in 16 seconds.
Eklips felt like he could top that and set up a camera to film himself firing off 105 French words in the same amount of time.
"Eminem if you're watching me right now I want to tell you, respect," Eklips says. "And it's not a battle. Let's do a track together if you want onstage or in the studio or both. And I think we could do something amazing."

50 Cent has landed yet another role in a big film. In the last year he's starred alongside John Cusack and Nicolas Cage in The Frozen Ground and Sylvestor Stallone and Arnold Schwarznegger in Escape Plan.
He's also wrapped up shooting Vengeance and the Bruce Willis flick The Prince.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the G-Unit mogul has now joined the all-star cast of the upcoming comedy film, Spy.
The cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Nia Long, Jude Law and Jason Statham.
Melissa McCarthy
The movie, which at one point was titled Susan Cooper, centers on a CIA analyst, played by McCarthy, who goes into the field for the first time.
Statham will assume the role of "an overconfident yet clumsy spy," while 50 will play himself.
The Paul Feig-directed flick will begin filming in Budapest in April.

Two "life long" Beyonce fans are taking the singer to court.
According to CBS Chicago, Raquel Castellanos and Gabriella Davidson, claim they bought general admission tickets to Beyonce's December 13, 2013 concert at the United Center in Chicago. They arrived early, along with other fans waiting for the gates to be opened.. Once fans were allowed inside a "rushing mob" knocked the two women to the ground and trampled them.
“As the hours passed, the group became larger, more dense and more anxious about how, when and where the gate(s) would be released and where ticket holders and fans were supposed to enter The United Center — none of which was explained,” the suit stated.
At 7 p.m. the gates were opened “without instruction or any reasonable system to permit and orderly entrance,
Both women were knocked unconscious and never got to see the concert. They were taken to the hospital and treated for broken bones and other injuries.
Beyonce, Live Nation and the United Center are named in a lawsuit filed by Davidson and Castellanos on Tuesday, April 1, in Cook County Court.
The women are accusing Beyonce, Live Nation and the United Center of negligence.
“To the contrary, The United Center encouraged it by the set up which it created and controlled,” the suit stated.
No word on the damages being sought by the two women.
