ATLANTA (AP) — A Georgia woman has been sentenced to serve nearly three & a half years in federal prison for fraudulently taking more than $6 million in COVID relief funds.
Federal prosecutors say 49-year-old Hunter VanPelt of Roswell submitted six false loan applications to the Paycheck Protection Program from April to June 2020. She requested a total of more more than $7.9 million & received more than $6 million.
Prosecutors said VanPelt, who legally changed her name from Ellen Corkrum in July 2016, owned or controlled six companies & lied about the average monthly payroll & number of employees at each company. She also filed false tax, bank & payroll documents along with those applications.
The Paycheck Protection Program represents billions of dollars in forgivable small business loans for Americans struggling because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s part of the coronavirus relief package that became federal law in 2020.
The federal government has been able to recover about $2.1 million of the money she received.
VanPelt pleaded guilty in August. The prison term of three years & five months that she received Tuesday is to be followed by five years of supervised release. The judge also ordered her to pay restitution of more than $7 million and to forfeit more than $2 million.
“The Paycheck Protection Program is meant to help legitimate businesses and their workers through the depths of the pandemic,” U.S. Attorney Kurt Erskine said in the release. “Unfortunately, VanPelt decided to use the program as her personal bank. A significant federal sentence, such as the one she received, hopefully deters others from following the same path.”
Sinead O'Connor's son has died, according to police ... it appears he took his own life, and Sinead is clearly angry at people who were in charge of taking care of the teen.
17-year-old Shane O'Connor apparently was on suicide watch in an Irish hospital just one day before he took his own life, but someone was able to leave. Sinead wrote the day before Shane's body was found, "Like, how has a seventeen-year-old traumatised young person WHO WAS ON SUICIDE WATCH in Tallaght Hospital's Lynn Ward been able to go missing???"
She went on ... "Hospital of course so far refusing to take any responsibility. Anything happens to my son on their watch? Lawsuits."
Police in Ireland issued this statement ... "Following the recovery of a body in the Bray area of Wicklow on Friday, 7th January 2022, a Missing Person Appeal in respect of Shane O’Connor, 17 years, has been stood down."
Sinead's rep confirmed her son's death, and she posted the tragic news as well, saying, "My beautiful son, Nevi'im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God."
She goes on ... "May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace:"
Police had been looking for Shane since Thursday, with Sinead pleading in a tweet, "Shane, your life is precious. God didn't chisel that beautiful smile on your beautiful face for nothing."
Her pleas got more desperate ... "This is a message for my son, Shane. Shane, it's not funny any more all this going missing. You are scaring the crap out of me. Could you please do the right thing and present yourself at a Gardai station. If you are with Shane please call the Gardai for his safety ... My world would collapse without you. You are my heart. Please don't stop it from beating. Please don't harm yourself. Go to the Gardai and let's get you to hospital."
The news has devastated the 55-year-old singer, who referenced a Bob Marley song ... "This is for my Shaney. The light of my life. The lamp of my soul. My blue-eye baby. You will always be my light. We will always be together. No boundary can separate us."
Shane's father is Donal Lunny, an Irish folk musician. He and Sinead are no longer together.

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -- The suspect accused of killing a man was a victim of circumstance by stealing a vehicle that happened to have body parts, including a severed head, in the back, his defense attorney said Tuesday.
Eric Holland faces a murder charge after Las Vegas Metropolitan Police conducted a vehicle stop on Dec. 23 on a Toyota Tundra with a suspended registration. Police said they followed the vehicle before Holland was seen driving a gold Chevrolet Avalanche.
LVMPD found a severed head and body parts in several coolers inside the second truck, according to an arrest report. The victim was identified as Richard P. Miller of Las Vegas, an acquaintance of the suspect. The coroner said Miller died from multiple gunshot wounds & his death was a homicide.
Holland's defense attorney David Westbrook claimed Holland happened to steal a vehicle with body parts inside. Westbrook asked rhetorically why Holland would intentionally lead officers to a vehicle with body parts inside.
“In order to believe he had knowledge of what was in that vehicle, you would have to believe he intentionally led police to the body," Westbrook said.
An LVMPD detective testified that multiple firearms & knives were recovered at the scene, along with tape and plastic bags. Prosecutors argued Holland was a danger to society & asked that he not be granted bail.
Judge Harmony Letizia agreed to not grant Holland bail. His next court appearance was set for Jan. 27.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — Justin Johnson, the 23-year-old man wanted in rapper Young Dolph’s murder, has a list of past criminal charges going back to a shooting at a bowling alley in 2017.
The U.S. Marshals Service on Wednesday identified Johnson as a suspect in the killing of 36-year-old Adolph Thornton Jr., better known as Young Dolph.
Police have issued a warrant for Johnson for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder & theft of property. He also has a warrant for violation of federal supervised release. A $15,000 reward is being offered in Johnson’s capture.
Some sources have reported that Johnson is a Memphis rapper who goes by the name “Straight Drop.”
Many fans are also making that connection, noticing where Straight Droppp shot a video outside of an abandoned home they believe is the same spot where a white Mercedes matching the description as the getaway car in Young Dolph’s death was discovered.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons said that Johnson was sentenced in the Western District of Tennessee and served time in prison from March 11, 2019 until he was released from a Louisiana facility on May 25, 2021 for good conduct.
Court records show that in January 2017, an 18-year-old Johnson was involved in a shooting that injured 3 people at Billy Hardwick’s All-Star Lanes in East Memphis. Police said a fight broke out at the bowling alley just before midnight & Johnson grabbed an assault rifle from outside and fired into a crowd, hitting three people before escaping with his girlfriend.
A month later, police said they found Johnson in a house in Parkway Village with marijuana, an assault rifle & active warrants for the January shooting. A police report listed Johnson as a gang member.
In May of 2017, Johnson pleaded guilty to several charges of aggravated assault, according to court records.
In May 2018, police said the 20-year-old Johnson drove a Dodge Charger into a gated apartment complex near the Memphis airport & refused to leave. Police say they found a loaded gun & marijuana in the car.
Johnson faced drug & weapons charges in that case, but Shelby County court records show the charges were dropped.

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Two parents charged with their son in a fatal Michigan school shooting are returning to court to ask for a lower bail to get out of jail.
James & Jennifer Crumbley have been locked up since Dec. 4, unable to meet a $500,000 bond. They’re hoping a judge is willing to reduce it Friday to $100,000.
The Crumbleys are charged with involuntary manslaughter for the Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School, which killed 4 teenagers & injured others. They’re accused of making a gun accessible to son Ethan Crumbley & refusing to take him home earlier that day when school counselors confronted them with distressing drawings of violence.
“The last thing they expected was that a school shooting would take place, or that their son would be responsible,” defense attorneys Shannon Smith & Mariell Lehman said in a court filing.
Separately, Ethan, 15, also faces a court hearing Friday. He is charged as an adult with murder & other crimes.
Prosecutors are opposing the parents’ request for a lower bond. They noted that the elder Crumbleys were missing for hours when charges were announced Dec. 3 before police found them miles away in a Detroit art studio early the next morning.
Smith said they had planned to appear in court on Dec. 4.
The Crumbleys “will flee if they get the opportunity,” prosecutors said in a court filing, noting they were behind in mortgage payments & had put their house up for sale.
Oxford High students are expected to return to school next week for the first time since the shooting but at a different building. The high school, roughly 30 miles north of Detroit, could reopen during the week of Jan. 23.

Drakeo the Ruler's family says it can't afford to bury him in a coffin ... so they're asking a court to give them access to his coffers.
According to new legal docs obtained by TMZ ... the rapper's mother says she just can't foot the bill for his funeral, which she is pegging at just under $52,000. She'd like to cover it with money from Drakeo's estate, but she can't access his assets without a court order.
In the docs, Drakeo's mom says her late son's assets should be at least $2 million, and she's asking the court to let her dip into those funds to say goodbye to her son with a proper burial. She adds ... the memorial she's planning will be full of "dignity, style and grace."
As we reported, Drakeo was fatally stabbed in the neck last month while backstage at the Once Upon A Time in L.A. festival.
In the docs, Drakeo's mother says she needs the money ASAP to secure a funeral date because it's hard to reserve a spot with funeral homes ... due to an increase in COVID-related deaths.
