UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — The white headmaster of a New York Catholic school forced an 11-year-old Black student to kneel while apologizing to a teacher & later explained that the punishment was an “African way,” the boy’s mother said.
Headmaster John Holian of St. Martin de Porres Marianist school on Long Island was placed on temporary leave after details of the Feb. 25 incident came to light.
The student’s mother, Trisha Paul, said that her son, Trayson, finished his reading early that day & took out another assignment.
Paul said the boy’s English teacher reprimanded Trayson for working on the wrong assignment, ripped up the paper & marched him to Holian’s office, where the headmaster told the sixth-grader to get on his knees & apologize to the teacher.
Paul said she called the school on March 1 and asked Holian if forcing students to kneel was standard disciplinary practice.
Holian said it was not but added that he’d learned the approach from a Nigerian father who said it was an “African way” of apologizing.
“Once he started mentioning this African family, that’s when it just clicked,” said Paul, who is Haitian American. “Like, this is not normal procedure. I felt there was no relevance at all. Is he generalizing that everyone who is Black is African? That’s when I realized something is not right with this situation.”
School officials sent an email to parents saying Holian had been placed on temporary pending an investigation.
Paul said her normally outgoing son has been reserved since the incident.
“My son was humiliated, hurt, embarrassed, sad & confused,” she said. “He reads about things happening because of your skin color. To experience it. ... he’s just trying to process it in his 11-year-old brain.”

VAIL, Colo. (AP) — A minor league baseball player is facing drug charges after police in Colorado found 21 pounds of methamphetamine & 1.2 pounds of oxycodone pills in his Chicago Cubs duffel bag.
The Vail Daily reports Jesus Camargo-Corrales, 25, of Tempe, Arizona, appeared in Eagle County Court on Thursday on charges including unlawful distribution of methamphetamine & oxycodone, both class 1 drug felonies, as well as charges of unlawful possession of each drug, both class 4 drug felonies.
“We are aware of the arrest of one our Minor League players,” said Julian Green, senior vice president of communications at Chicago Cubs. “We are investigating this matter & cannot provide additional comment until we have further details.”
He was ordered held on $75,000 bond.
The Eagle County jail confirmed he was still in custody as of Saturday. It’s unclear if Camargo-Corrales has an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
Camargo-Corrales was stopped on Interstate 70 in a silver BMW Wednesday morning near the ritzy ski area of Vail, Colorado after an Eagle County sheriff’s deputy saw the car speeding & drifting lanes, according to the arrest affidavit.
Camargo-Corrales was driving with two other passengers, who were also interviewed but police said were not aware of the drugs. They said they were driving to Denver from Phoenix but gave different accounts of the trip.
Camargo-Corrales told police he was going to Denver to teach a kids baseball clinic & claimed there were no drugs because he said he followed the Chicago Cubs’ anti-doping policy.
But police said a K-9 named Zane alerted authorities to the car’s rear wheel well & the back seat & Camargo-Corrales gave permission to a police search of the vehicle.
Officers then found a white bag with cologne & $1,000 held by a rubber band. In the trunk, a Chicago Cubs duffel bag that Camargo-Corrales said was his held baseball gloves & cleats, as well as several packages wrapped in white plastic marked “CO” and two packages wrapped in green plastic, according to the affidavit.
Police said Camargo-Corrales agreed to be interviewed & claimed a friend in Sinaloa, Mexico — where the notorious Sinaloa Cartel is based — offered him $500 to deliver the duffel bag to Denver. Camargo-Corrales, who is also from Sinaloa, said that he thought the bag had contained shoes or clothing, but also indicated he knew there were drugs inside.
He’s expected back in court on March 30.

More than $2 million has been raised for the two sons of a woman killed in one of three Atlanta-area spa shootings.
Randy Park, 23, created a GoFundMe account on Thursday to raise money for rent, food & other expenses after his mother, Hyun Jung Grant, 51, was killed Tuesday. Grant was one of nine victims in the shooting spree at spas in Atlanta & Cherokee County.
"She was one of my best friends & the strongest influence on who we are today," Park wrote on the GoFundMe. "As much as I want to grieve & process the reality that she is gone, I have a younger brother to take care of & matters to resolve as a result of this tragedy."
Park had set a goal of raising $20,000. But as of Saturday the account, which GoFundMe verified, had garnered more than $2.5 million. Park expressed his gratitude in a touching post.
"I don't know how any word I write here will ever convey how grateful & blessed I am to receive this much support," he said, writing that his family has been given "a second chance."
According to the GoFundMe page, more than 63,000 people donated money to Park & his brother.
"To those of you that have donated any amount of money. To put it bluntly, I can't believe you guys exist," Park wrote. "People I will probably never meet, hear, nor express my thanks to. This is simply a change in my life. Thank you everyone so much. This doesn't represent even a fragment of how I feel."
Park, who works as a cashier at a bakery, told NBC News that he & his younger brother grew up in Seattle with their mother. She moved them south about 13 years ago for a better life & because of Atlanta's rich Korean history.

The leader of an education advocacy group in Connecticut is shocked by a recent transaction at her local TD Bank & suspects racism was at play.
Gwen Samuel, who is Black, said a teller at a branch in Southington, Connecticut, refused to complete a withdrawal for her & she was forced withdraw the money at another branch.
Samuel, CEO & founder of the group Connecticut Parents Union, which advocates for equal educational opportunities for children in Connecticut, said she went to the bank to withdraw just over $1,000 to pay a vendor.
Since Samuel has been a TD Bank customer for 16 years, she figured it would be a simple transaction.
“I go inside, I had my TD Bank card & my license,” Samuel told Fox61. “They were cordial. I’m not even gonna say they were rude.”
However, the teller spent a lot of time going through Samuel’s account before coming back.
“She hands me my license & she says, ‘I don’t feel comfortable giving you the money,’” Samuel said. “So, I got confused, so I said, ‘You don’t feel comfortable giving me the money,’” she said. “She said, ‘Well you just deposited the check yesterday.’”
Samuel then pointed out to the teller that she had already verified the check had cleared.
She was shocked by the teller’s response.
“And she said, ‘Oh yeah, it cleared. The money is available. I just don’t feel comfortable giving it to you,’” Samuel said, adding that the teller never explained why she felt that way.
“I was so hurt & I didn’t want to start crying,” she told WFSB TV.
Since there was no policy preventing her from withdrawing the money in her account, Samuel checked the ATM outside of the bank & had no problem taking money out of the account.
She then went to another branch & withdrew what she needed to pay the vendor with the help of the employees there.

(Reuters) - Forensic teams & dozens of heavily armed police & military officials gathered at the cordoned off crime scene dotted with checkpoints after one of the worst mass slayings of Mexican law enforcement officials in years.
Though authorities say crime is widespread, residents were badly shaken by Thursday’s violence. Some houses were strafed with bullets in the small town nestled between verdant hills & corn fields, where most people make a living cultivating crops.
The attackers rounded up bodies of the fallen police officers into a pile & continued to spray them with bullets, according to a local officer at the scene on Friday.
“They finished them off,” said the officer, who declined to give his name. He had lost colleagues in the ambush, he said.
The police convoy came under fire in broad daylight as it patrolled about 40 miles south of the city of Toluca, in a zone where gangs including the Familia Michoacana drug cartel are known to operate, officials said.
The area is in a region of the State of Mexico often hit by gangs from Guerrero & Michoacan, adjoining states that have long been among the most lawless in the country.
Federal authorities are investigating but have yet to give a motive for the killings. Another police officer at the scene said it may have been an act of “retaliation,” without giving more details. Local police would not point to suspects.

OOZING “Pretty PK Kitty”
This beat will get your attention of the rip. It is different and has a pull to it to make the listener stay tuned for the whole thing. Pk is a lyrical monster and she definitely doesn’t disappoint in this song either. Oozing is a step up from the average “drip”. From her flare of the money dance and not spending a band verse to the overall hook she has on this, don’t sleep on this one.

Band Band Zay does it again with a feature with Pooh Sheisty. The song blends well with the two artists and their lyrics go hand in hand. He pulls his own weight with the heavy hitting new mainstream artist. Trapping at its finest, the beat has the turn up sound and the southern flair both artist are known for. Baby Gucci is a song to add to any DJs play list.

An aide to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told The New York Times that Cuomo ogled her & made inappropriate remarks — the latest accusation of sexual harassment against a governor who's already facing bipartisan calls to resign.
Alyssa McGrath, 33, told the paper that Cuomo would remark on her looks & make suggestive comments to her & another executive aide.
She recounted one instance when she was called into his office to take dictation.
“I put my head down waiting for him to start speaking, and he didn’t start speaking,” she told The New York Times. “So I looked up to see what was going on. And he was blatantly looking down my shirt.” She said Cuomo then asked her, "‘What’s on your necklace?’ Which was in my shirt.”
McGrath was also friends with another aide who reportedly alleged that the governor had groped her. The unidentified woman's complaint has since been forwarded to the Albany police department. McGrath said she discussed the alleged incident with the woman after The Albany Times Union reported on it last week.
The co-worker told McGrath that Cuomo had asked her not to tell her about the incident because he knew the two were close.
Cuomo has denied the woman's groping allegation. "I have never done anything like this," he said in a statement to NBC News last week.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In 2018, Gregory Bush walked into the Jeffersontown Kroger, shot Maurice Stallard, then walked into the parking lot & shot Vickie Jones.
Thursday in court, a judge asked Bush, a white man, if he shot the two victims because they were Black. He said yes.
Bush pled guilty to six federal charges: two counts of shooting & killing a victim based on race, and one count of attempting to shoot a victim based on race. The other three charges are gun related.
The maximum sentence in federal court Bush can receive is life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The death penalty was taken off the table at the request of former U.S. Attorney General William Barr in exchange from a guilty plea from Bush. Jones’s sister, Samuella Gathright, said she has mixed feelings about that exchange.
“I’m a Christian, my family are Christians & I don’t think we would get anything out of him being sentenced to death,” Gathright said. “As long as he never walks this earth again, I think I can live with that.”
Bush will be sentenced June 24 at 1 p.m.
In December, Bush pled guilty, but mentally ill, to murder, attempted murder & wanton endangerment in state court.
He has already been sentenced to life in prison for those crimes.
