The threat of extremist groups descending on statehouses across the country in demonstrations Sunday prompted some governors to roll out a massive show of force & ramp up security, less than two weeks after a mob overran the nation’s Capitol.

Fencing, boarded-up windows & lines of police & National Guard troops have transformed statehouse grounds ahead of expected demonstrations leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday.

The stepped-up security measures were intended to safeguard seats of government from the type of violence that occurred at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, when a supporters of President Donald Trump swarmed the building while Congress was certifying the Electoral College vote.

The FBI has warned of the potential for armed protests at the nation’s Capitol & all 50 state capitol buildings beginning this weekend. Some social media messages had targeted Sunday for demonstrations, though it remained unclear how many people might show up.

In Columbus, Ohio, nearly every business around the downtown capital square was boarded up. In Lansing, Michigan, police with dogs patrolled on foot & a helicopter hovered overhead. In Atlanta, armored vehicles were stationed on Capitol grounds.

Security in Washington, D.C., has also intensified ahead of the inauguration. Tall fencing surrounds the U.S. Capitol, the National Mall is closed to the general public & the D.C. mayor asked people not to visit. Some 25,000 National Guard troops from around the country were due in the city by early in the week. On Sunday, National Guard troops who have already arrived were stationed outside the Capitol with officers from the Customs & Border Protection as well as other federal police.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rock producer Phil Spector, who changed the sound of pop music in the 1960s with his “Wall of Sound” recordings and was convicted of murder for the 2003 murder of a Hollywood actress, has died at age 81 of COVID-19, according to media reports on Sunday.

Spector produced 20 top 40 hits between 1961 and 1965 and went on to work with the Beatles, the Righteous Brothers and Ike and Tina Turner. He also influenced artists ranging from the Beach Boys to Bruce Springsteen, who emulated the Spector sound on his classic single “Born to Run.”

Spector was diagnosed with COVID-19 four weeks ago and was transferred from his prison cell, where he was serving a 19 years-to-life sentence for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, to a hospital, the Daily Mail newspaper said.

One of the Capitol rioters who was arrested in the aftermath now has an audacious ask of President Trump ... she's begging for a pardon, saying she was just following his orders.

Texas realtor Jenna Ryan told CBS11 in Dallas she deserves a full pardon by 45 after she was arrested and charged by the FBI this past week during a national roundup of numerous insurrectionists.

Ryan faces 2 charges ... knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. But, according to her, she's been grossly overcharged -- she feels she did nothing wrong.

Check out her full remarks ... kinda surreal hearing her defend her actions by saying the exact opposite of things she said on Jan. 6 as she breached the Capitol. She's blaming Trump for gathering the crowd and rising them up ... and because of that, she says she and all the other charged rioters should be let off the hook.

Ryan doesn't get into the details of her case, but does say she's not the person people have made her out to be online ... a privileged, tone-deaf Trump supporter. We say privileged because she reportedly flew to D.C. on a private jet with friends.

As for tone-deaf ... there are tons of photos and videos of Ryan posing in front of the Capitol and with rioters behind her, acting like she was on vacation or something. She also admits to criminality in videos she posted ... and proudly said she and the mob were there to take back their country.

As for whether Trump's gonna pardon any of these folks? Hey, at this point, it seems like anything's possible.

Anthony Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn said a deal for the world heavyweight champion to meet Tyson Fury in an undisputed world heavyweight title bout this year is all but done, with a venue in the Middle East a front-runner to host it.

Joshua beat Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev last month to retain his IBF, WBO and WBA titles to set up the prospect of a mouth-watering clash with fellow Briton Fury who holds the WBC belt.

“The deal is done, really - without being signed,” Hearn was quoted as saying by The Times.

“The financial elements of the deal are done. We’re talking through the broadcast situation, the only thing really now is to paper it.

“And when you paper a deal like that, it does go back and forwards 15 times before every single letter is approved on the document.”

Fury has not fought since beating American Deontay Wilder in their Las Vegas rematch in February to claim the WBC crown.

Hearn said Joshua and Fury would face off in two fights - with the first likely to be in the Middle East later this year - and he hoped to bring the rematch back to Britain.

“The Middle East will be aggressive and will be front-runners in this. To stage this fight, you need significant government support. You need someone who is staging this fight as a statement for their country,” Hearn said.

“I’d like it (the rematch) to be (in the UK). Where? Millennium Stadium.”

As server Flavaine Carvalho waited on a family of four, she saw signs that something possibly wasn’t quite right with the young boy.

And she decided to ask a question that police said potentially saved his life:

“Do you need help?”

On New Year’s Day, Timothy Wilson II, Kristen Swann, an unknown family member and their 11-year-old boy went to Mrs. Potato Restaurant in Orlando for a meal, an Orlando police release read. Carvalho, their waitress, thought that something was off when the boy didn’t order anything.

Carvalho also thought that the child had bruises on his face and arms, and she was determined to figure out what was going on. So she wrote a note asking if he needed help, standing out of sight of the adults and waiting for a moment to give him the message.

The boy, after three tries, was eventually able to signal ‘yes.’

Carvalho immediately called police to the restaurant.

When officers arrived, they took the boy aside and noticed bruising on the right side of his face and a healing wound on the bridge of his nose, according to an arrest report. The boy said the bruises came from falling off his bed while he was sleeping and hit a table.

Then the officer found more bruises on his right arm starting from his shoulder all the way down to his wrist. The boy said these marks came from wrestling with his dad, Wilson, the report read.

The boy eventually told the officer ratchet straps were tied around his ankles and neck, and he was hung upside down from a door. He also said he was hit with a wooden broom and handcuffed and tied to a large moving dolly, police said. He didn’t get to eat on a regular basis as punishment.

Swann told officers she knew that Wilson was abusing their son yet did not take him to a doctor.

Wilson and Swann were arrested on Jan. 6. Wilson was charged with multiple counts of aggravated child abuse and child neglect, while Swann was charged with two counts of child neglect.

“By saying something when she saw something, Ms. Carvalho displayed courage and care for a child she had never even met before, and we’re proud someone like Ms. Carvalho lives and works in our community,” police said.

Kyrie Irving has been hit with yet another fine this season ... this time, the Brooklyn Nets superstar will have to cough up $50,000 for violating the league's health and safety protocols.

As we previously reported, the NBA was investigating video of a maskless Irving attending a private birthday party for his sister earlier this week, which is against the league's COVID-19 policy.

The rule states players cannot attend indoor events exceeding 15 people.

The Association handed down its punishment Friday ... and while KI was hit with the $50k fine, he will also forfeit game checks for the 2 games he missed following the party, which amounts to $816,898, according to insider Bobby Marks.

It's not the first time Irving has had to pull out his wallet this season ... he was fined $25k for refusing to speak to the media.

The latest development adds to the drama-filled season for Irving -- who went MIA on the Nets last week for "personal reasons."

Irving will be able to return to the team as early as Saturday -- as long as he continues to test negative for COVID -- but whether he actually shows up is a different issue.

PARKER, Colo. — Denver Broncos star pass rusher Von Miller is under criminal investigation by the Parker Police Department.

Josh Hans, a spokesman for the Parker Police Department, confirmed that an investigation involving Miller is under way.

He said if it is determined that a crime was committed, it will be turned over to the district attorney for a charging decision.

“We’re not commenting on the nature of the allegations,” Hans said. “We haven’t completed the investigation.”

9News attempted to reach out to Miller and his agent Joby Branion for comment but they did not immediately respond.

PHOENIX (AP) — The pro-Trump mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol last week aimed to “capture and assassinate elected officials,” federal prosecutors said in court documents.

The remarks came in a motion prosecutors filed late Thursday in the case against Jacob Chansley, the Arizona man who took part in the insurrection while sporting face paint, no shirt and a furry hat with horns.

Prosecutors say that after Chansley climbed up to the dais where Vice President Mike Pence had been presiding moments earlier, Chansley wrote a threatening note to Pence that said: “It’s only a matter of time, justice is coming.”

Pence and other congressional leaders had been ushered out of the chamber by the Secret Service and U.S. Capitol Police before the rioters stormed into the room.

“Strong evidence, including Chansley’s own words and actions at the Capitol, supports that the intent of the Capitol rioters was to capture and assassinate elected officials in the United States Government,” prosecutors wrote in their memo urging the judge to keep Chansley behind bars.

The FBI has been investigating whether any of the rioters had plots to kidnap members of Congress and hold them hostage, focusing particularly on the men seen carrying plastic zip tie handcuffs and pepper spray. Prosecutors raised a similar prospect on Friday in the case of a former Air Force officer who they alleged carried plastic zip-tie handcuffs because he intended “to take hostages.” But so far, the Justice Department has not publicly released any specific evidence on the plots or explained how the rioters planned to carry them out.

A judge denied bond on Thursday for 29-year-old Rayshawn Bennett, also known as YFN Lucci, who turned himself in to authorities & was booked into the Fulton County Jail Wednesday.

On December 10, officers were dispatched around 5:20 p.m. following a person shot all on the 900 block of Peeples Street in southwest Atlanta. When they arrived, they found 28-year-old James Adams laying in the street with a gunshot wound to his head.

Adams was rushed to Grady Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Minutes later, a second victim, 32-year-old Kevin Wright arrived at a local fire station by private vehicle. He suffered a gunshot wound, but survived his injuries, police said.

Bennett is charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, participation in criminal street gang activity & possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Police also arrested 23-year-old Ra'von Boyd & 17-year-old Leroy Pitts for their alleged role in the shooting death.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Clayton County woman was arrested this week, the sheriff's office said, after shooting & killing a man & sending his mother text messages threatening to kill her son.

The Clayton County Sheriff's Office said police first responded on Tuesday to a female caller in Forest Park who refused to give out information & who was gone by the time they got there.

Later, they were called to Atlanta Medical Center, where a man had been dropped off with a gunshot wound by a woman who told staff she'd shot him.

That woman was identified by detectives as Lakerria Williams after looking at surveillance video from the two sites they were called to.

In the video from the first call, "the victim is seen putting clothing into his vehicle & when he walks back towards his apartment, Williams pulls a gun from her coat pocket & shoots him," the Clayton sheriff's office said.

The Fulton County Sheriff's Office, which assisted in the arrest, identified the victim as Keith Winfrey.

"Once detectives spoke to the victim’s mother, they discovered that Williams sent her text messages stating that she was going to kill her son," a release added.

The Clayton Sheriff's Office said Williams later called & said she was ready to turn herself in, & she was arrested at the Waffle House on Old National Highway without incident.

According to jail records, Williams now faces charges of malice murder, aggravated assault & possession of a weapon during a crime.
