Jay-Z has topped a list of the world's richest rappers, beating Sean 'Diddy' Combs in a list from US magazine Forbes. The Empire State Of Mind rapper made $63 million (£40 million) in personal income between June 2009 and June 2010. Diddy made less than half that with $30 million (£19 million). Akon came third followed by Lil Wayne and Dr Dre. Big income Jay-Z's income was no doubt boosted by the release of his album The Blueprint III and a number of high profile live gigs including headline slots at Isle Of Wight and Wireless in the UK. Lil Wayne - real name Dwayne Carter - still managed to earn $20 (£13 million) despite beginning a jail sentence in March for weapons charges. Forbes noted that all the highest earning names on the list had "diverse" business interests outside of music - including alcohol sponsorships, clothing lines and film appearances. Perhaps most surprisingly Eminem came joint 14th in the list despite his most recent album Recovery selling 741,000 copies in its first week. The Detroit rapper earned $8 million (£5 million). Zack O'Malley Greenburg, the writer who compiled the list, said: "It's pretty shocking to see him so low down on the list. Compared to his peers, he doesn't really do much outside of music." The full list of the list's top 20 is as follows: 1. Jay-Z – $63 million 2. Diddy – $30 million 3. Akon – $21 million 4. Lil Wayne – $20 million 5. Dr. Dre – $17 million 6. Ludacris – $16 million 7. Snoop Dogg – $15 million 8. Timbaland – $14 million 9. Pharrell – $13 million 10. Kanye West – $12 million 11. Drake – $9 million 11. T.I. – $ 9 million 12. Swizz Beatz – $9 million 14. Eminem – $8 million 14.50 Cent – $8 million 14. Young Jeezy – $8 million 17. Common – $7 million 18. Soulja Boy – $7 million 18. T-Pain – $7 million 20. Lil Jon – $5 million 20. Gucci Mane – $5 million 20. Rick Ross – $5 million Source: BBC twitter-2a.png

Four years after a shooting left an unarmed Sean Bell dead (on the eve of his wedding) and two of his friends wounded following a tragic incident with New York City police, the city has agreed to pay $7 million dollars to settle a federal lawsuit filed by Bell's family and his friends.

According to The New York Times, in the early hours of November 25, 2006, five New York City police officers fired 50 shots into the car Bell — who was to be married that day — was driving outside a club in Queens, New York. The car reportedly struck a detective in the leg and hit a police van before the officers began firing. None of the three men in the car — Bell and his friends Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield — were armed, although the officers apparently believed at least one was.

In what's seen as the closing chapter in one of the most controversial police shootings in New York City history — three officers were acquitted of manslaughter and reckless-endangerment charges in 2008, a ruling many activists and rappers spoke out against — the families of the victims are looking to move past the tragedy.

As part of the settlement, Bell's two young daughters (whom he had with his fiancée, Nicole Paultre Bell) will receive $3.25 million; Guzman (who was shot 17 times) and Trent Benefield will receive $3 million and $900,000 respectively, according to Times.

Earlier this week, Foxy Brown — a close friend of Bell's fiancée — said Paultre Bell is a strong woman who remained in high spirits throughout the four-year ordeal.

"She just handled everything so gracefully," Brown said. "She just did everything with grace and class."

G-Unit member Tony Yayo, whose G-Unity foundation gave proceeds from a recent event to Bell's family, said the settlement is long overdue.

"I think it's a beautiful thing, but rest in peace to Sean Bell," Yayo said. "I mean, you have times now when a police officer can shoot you in your back, handcuffed on the floor, in a train station in front of everybody and get two years," Yayo said, referring to the Oscar Grant shooting in Oakland, California, in which found a transit officer was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter last month. "So Sean Bell's people deserve that money, definitely, and blessings to them."

(AllHipHop.com) After gaining the attention of fans earlier this week with a heart felt letter from behind bars, incarcerated New Orleans rapper Lil' Wayne is making headlines in a less favorable way.

Apparently the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is after Lil' Wayne’s fortunes, seeking over $1.13 million dollars in back taxes for the years 2004, 2005 and 2007.

The IRS filed and a lien against his One Family Foundation this past June in Dade County Florida courts, as the lien maintains the same address as his charitable organization.

This is the second tax lien filed against Wayne in the last 2 years as in 2008 he paid off a tax debt of $977,840

Representatives for Lil' Wayne could not be reached for comments at the time of press release.

Multiple sources confirmed with AllHipHop.com that the IRS has a special unit that tails and tracks the artists, as one of the methods used to keep a tab on their earnings.

The “issue management team” was formed in 2007 and its goal is to get unclaimed tax money from athletes and entertainers in the United States and foreigners who come to tour the country.

“A few years ago, they concluded that athlete and entertainer taxes might be escaping their radar. So they reinstated a division to only deal with this area,” said Bill Zysblat of the global touring/accounting company RZO Productions.

A number of rappers have fallen into tax troubles since 2007.

Artists and executives like Suge Knight ($6 million), Nas ($3 million), DMX ($1.5 million), Lil Wayne ($1 million), Swizz Beatz ($645,000), Snoop Dogg ($598,000), Fat Joe ($140,000), Method Man ($40,000) and numerous others have had to account to the IRS in the past year alone.

A source told AllHipHop.com that in the pursuit of the tax dollars, a variety of artists have landed in trouble for other infractions, such as gun possession and a variety of drug charges.

The IRS is also investigating a number of record labels and artists, who ran money through their non-profits for commercial gains.

I know yall thought Pastor Mason Betha wasn't really preaching the good word, but Ruff Ryders rapper Eve begs to differ.

Eve says a chance encounter with the sometimes rapper, sometimes preacher gave her the inspiration to pursue her rapping career.

The pair met when Ma$e was still wearing those shiny suits for Puffy and Bad Boy Records.

Ma$e stopped by the gentlemen's club where Eve was working that pole and convinced her she could do better.

Eve told VH1's Behind The Music about the encounter.

"He came into the club and looked at me and literally was like, 'What's your name?' And I gave him every stripper name under the sun! I was like, 'I'm Ginger, I'm Sassy!' He was like, 'Why don't you go get dressed, let's go just talk.' And we did, we talked throughout the night. He was like, 'You're really talented. What are you doing? You know you're not supposed to be here. You know it.'

Eve took what he said to heart.

"It was a confirmation for me that all these thoughts, all this sadness. All these times that I wake up in the morning, I'm like, 'Why do I feel like this?' And I know I'm not supposed to be there. It just woke me up."

Already a talented rapper, 18 year old Eve got an audition with Mike Lynn, A&R of Aftermath Records. After one verse and hook he knew he had a star.

Mike introduced Eve to Dr Dre who signed her to a record deal. But after Eminem came into the picture, Aftermath released her after only 8 months.

Eventually she got a chance to audition for Ruff Ryders and the rest is history.

The hip-hop star known as Eve, who is expected to release a new rap album this year, has been drawn into a massive U.S. Senate investigation into the illicit movement of millions of foreign dollars through the American financial system, a new government report shows. Senate investigators spent three years tracking money flowing into the U.S. from the accounts of her on-and-off again boyfriend Teodorin Nguema Obiang. He is the playboy son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, the corrupt dictator whose three-decade reign has been marked by rumors -- believed to be falsely spread to incite fear -- of cannibalism. Investigators believe most, if not all, of the millions in cash came from corruption related to the massive oil and gas reserves off the coast of the tiny West African country. According to the report released last night, Obiang used middle men – lawyers, escrow and real estate agents, and in one case, his then-girl friend, the statuesque rapper-actress Eve Jeffers – to allegedly set up shell companies in the U.S. Through those, investigators say, Obiang wired in funds that enabled him to buy luxury cars, a $30 million Malibu estate and place a down payment on a Gulfstream jet. Two Los Angeles lawyers allegedly carried out most of the scheme. They were summoned to testify before the senate today to explain why they set up shell companies on Obiang's behalf. Eve has a cameo in the report, as the president of what senate investigators described as a shell company. Obiang called it "Sweet Pink, Inc.," which was evidently set up in late 2005 "to employ individuals at the home [Obiang] maintained before he purchased the Malibu Property and to handle payroll and other matters related to the employment of those individuals," according to the report. It is unclear if the money may have also helped Obiang finance his elaborate efforts to woo Eve, which included setting up a record label and reportedly paying $700,000 to rent Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen's 300-foot yacht Tatoosh for a romantic Christmas cruise around St. Barts. Eve has appeared in movies alongside Hollywood superstars Daniel Craig, Kevin Bacon, Vin Diesel, Queen Latifah and Ice Cube. She recently starred on two episodes of the hit show Glee and is reportedly set to release a new album entitled "Lip Lock" this year. Her publicist did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The status of their relationship is unclear, though reports have since had Obiang linked romantically to others. If Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., has his way, Obiang won't be funneling more money into the U.S. to court women, or do much of anything else. The investigation, conducted by the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which Levin chairs, highlights the variety of loopholes that have allowed corrupt foreign officials to channel ill-gotten cash into legitimate American holdings. Audio After The Jump On Monday, we brought you info from the great Bun B and his journey to tear a hole in every beat he raps on this year. Uncle Bun wants his name next to dozens and dozens of songs this year, whether it's original material, freestyles or guest spots. Another MC known for knocking the lining out of a beat is Philly's Cassidy. Cass has been jumping on a slew of instrumentals, from Jay-Z's "On to the Next One" to Jay Electronica's "Exhibit C."
"I wasn't going to touch it," Cass told us about getting on Electronica's instant classic. "I heard so many radio DJs talking about it, and they talking like Jay Electronica was saving hip-hop with that record, so I said, 'I gotta get up on that joint.' I'm pretty much jumping on everything that's hot. I'm saturating the game, really trying to make people suffocate. ... I wanted to get the mixtape market in a frenzy, to let them know I'm coming back." Cass' new mixtape, Apply Pressure 2, is tentatively due February 5. Besides freestyles, Cass has been dropping original material for the streets like "She's Addicted" and "Henny and Bacardi." Cass said he sampled the voice of his former Full Surface Records CEO, Swizz Beatz, to show there is no bad blood with the super producer and they're still friends. Another friend of Cassidy's, NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony, has invested some dollars into the Hustla's project, affording him the comfort of recording like he's working with a major, even though Cass is independent now. The record is dropping through Larceny Entertainment, by way of E1. Cassidy's new LP, C.A.S.H., is coming out later this year. It's his first album since 2007's B.A.R.S. "My album is C.A.S.H. It stands for 'Cass Always Stays Hard.' Some people say it's 'Cass Always a Straight Hustla.' My last album was B.A.R.S., [which stands for] the 'Barry Adrian Reese Story.' They say it's a recession. I call my album C.A.S.H. because everybody needs money. I feel as though everybody that's a fan of hip-hop or a fan of music period, they need to come and support artists like me, because you gonna see hip-hop fall off the map, like other forms of music, if you don't. I don't feel it's going down a good path right now. I think they need to support artists like me that's really gonna put his all into it, go hard, be lyrical and be original, not a follower." Cass said the first single is pretty much done, and it features a "big, big artist" he's worked with before. He has "hundreds" of songs he's been whittling down, and he plans to mix and master this week. "I got a street record to shake up the industry," he said. "I'm dropping that in two weeks. I'm gonna let that rock and come back with the real single." That street banger is called "Face to Face." "It's basically talking about things I would like to see in the industry," he said about the song. "People talking about 'Hip-hop is dead.' I don't feel as though hip-hop is dead. The same people who started hip-hop is living. There's certain adjustments that need to be made to make sure it goes back to normal. I feel it's gonna shake up the game. It's gonna give the industry a lot to talk about. Even if you don't like how I rhyme or my tone of voice, just for the concept alone, you're gonna have a lot to talk about."
