It is one of the biggest nights in the music business and it seems that the American Music Awards was a night to celebrate the achievements of the fairer sex.

Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were among the female stars scooping up the gongs leaving their male counterparts curiously empty handed.

Nicki who had put on a stellar performance with David Guetta to open the ceremony held at the Nokia Theatre scooped the Favorite Album Awards for Pink Friday as well as landing the coveted Favorite Artist Award

Beaming the rapper and singer told the crowd: "There's so much love in this room."

Taylor Swift who was highly celebrated at the Country Music Awards recently scored the award for Female Country Artist and was congratulated with a warm embrace from Selena Gomez.

Jennifer Lopez, who had put on an extremely provocative performance with rapper Pitbull, before he went on to sing with her estranged husband Marc Anthony, was awarded the gong for Favorite Latin Artist.

Katy Perry who had showed off her curves in a stunning Vivienne Westwood dress on the red carpet was given a special honor to signify five of her songs from her album hitting the number one spot.

The "California Girls" singer took to the stage in her pink performance ensemble and was handed the gong by Heidi Klum.

The pair shared a kiss before Katy gave her thank you speech.

After her seriously raunchy performance which saw her strip off on stage Jennifer Lopez donned a sheer embellished gown to collect her award for Favorite Latin Artist.

Reflecting on the past year JLo told the crowd: "It's been up and down and just exciting and overwhelming and so many things."

Not all the winners were able to attend the ceremony and Rihanna gave her thank you speech via video link as she was in London.

Video After The Jump Hip hop fans remember Nate Dogg for his appearances on hit records from artists like Dr Dre, Ludacris, Jadakiss, Eminem and many more, as well as his solo albums. He and Warren G helped pioneer that West Coast G-Funk style of music. And when it came to singing hooks, the man had the game on lock. After suffering two debilitating strokes, Nate is on the tough road back to recovery. In a recent interview with Hip Hop Hollywood, good friend Warren G talked about Nate's progress. "Nate is in a lot of therapy right now. We actually got a website coming out where people can send donations," Warren said. "That's gonna help out with him, help him get back on his feet. Plus us in the industry, we're gonna do a lot to help out with him." When asked if Nate would ever sing again, Warren said he was hopeful. "Everybody just gotta keep him in their prayers, cause he had two strokes and that's real dangerous. And a lot of people don't come back from that. Luther Vandross did it, so hopefully Nate can do it. Cause the game needs him, I need him," Warren said. twitter-5d.gif

Jay-Z has topped a list of the world's richest rappers, beating Sean 'Diddy' Combs in a list from US magazine Forbes. The Empire State Of Mind rapper made $63 million (£40 million) in personal income between June 2009 and June 2010. Diddy made less than half that with $30 million (£19 million). Akon came third followed by Lil Wayne and Dr Dre. Big income Jay-Z's income was no doubt boosted by the release of his album The Blueprint III and a number of high profile live gigs including headline slots at Isle Of Wight and Wireless in the UK. Lil Wayne - real name Dwayne Carter - still managed to earn $20 (£13 million) despite beginning a jail sentence in March for weapons charges. Forbes noted that all the highest earning names on the list had "diverse" business interests outside of music - including alcohol sponsorships, clothing lines and film appearances. Perhaps most surprisingly Eminem came joint 14th in the list despite his most recent album Recovery selling 741,000 copies in its first week. The Detroit rapper earned $8 million (£5 million). Zack O'Malley Greenburg, the writer who compiled the list, said: "It's pretty shocking to see him so low down on the list. Compared to his peers, he doesn't really do much outside of music." The full list of the list's top 20 is as follows: 1. Jay-Z – $63 million 2. Diddy – $30 million 3. Akon – $21 million 4. Lil Wayne – $20 million 5. Dr. Dre – $17 million 6. Ludacris – $16 million 7. Snoop Dogg – $15 million 8. Timbaland – $14 million 9. Pharrell – $13 million 10. Kanye West – $12 million 11. Drake – $9 million 11. T.I. – $ 9 million 12. Swizz Beatz – $9 million 14. Eminem – $8 million 14.50 Cent – $8 million 14. Young Jeezy – $8 million 17. Common – $7 million 18. Soulja Boy – $7 million 18. T-Pain – $7 million 20. Lil Jon – $5 million 20. Gucci Mane – $5 million 20. Rick Ross – $5 million Source: BBC twitter-2a.png

Kanye West kept his cool, and Chris Brown completely lost it on what turned out to be a night of hyped comebacks and flashy arrivals at the BET Awards 2010. (Because it certainly wasn't a night of time management, with the show running a long-winded three-and-a-half hours.)

Sure, there was some déjà vu, too, with Mo'Nique scoring her bazillionth Best Actress award, and an expectant Alicia Keys winning twice, for Best Female R&B Artist and Best Collaboration, which she shared with an absentee Jay-Z for "Empire State of Mind."

But it was the long-lost wild cards that the fans were tuning in to see.

West and some dramatic pyrotechnics, including an explosive lava flow and a sparkly snow flurry, opened the show with "Power," marking the venerable rapper's return from Taylor Swift-interrupting exile.

T.I., backed by Travis Barker on drums, did a hot version of "Yeah Ya Know" for what was his first big post-prison performance.

And while Todd Bridges showed up to give a shout-out to Gary Coleman ("I was even hearing [that phrase] in prison!") it was Brown who was tasked with the expected yet still-surprising Michael Jackson tribute marking the first anniversary of the King of Pop's death. Brown even started out in silhouette, making us squint at first to see who was donning the trademark fedora.

Brown did justice to Jackson's dance moves (as much as anyone could, that is) and his sweet timbre, but whether it was out of feeling for Jackson or introspection directed at his own past foibles, the tarnished 21-year-old choked up and never recovered when "Man in the Mirror" got going.

And that was OK, considering the circumstances.

It was also a big night for honoring Mom.

"My mom didn't even know what channel this was going to be on," half-joked Best Female Hip-Hop Artist winner Nicki Minaj, clad in a prom-ready white gown and topped with a rocket-red wig.

Canadian upstart Drake praised his mother for raising him as a single mom while accepting his award for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, and Trey Songz, named Best Male R&B Artist, peered into the crowd and wondered where his mom went, only to realize she was already onstage behind him.

Performance highlights included Eminem's thundering rendition of "Not Afraid," which at one point included a massive gospel choir; Keys' medley of a bunch of her hits; Songz' covering "Purple Rain" in anticipation of Prince being honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award; and the all-lady tribute to Prince, featuring Keys, Patti LaBelle, Janelle Monae and more.

Prince's turtleneck with the drawing of himself on it was pretty cool, too.

"I'm just so thankful to be a part of this world of music," the wee, dapper legend said in thanks. "Thanks for a wonderful night. I'll never forget it as long as I live."

Smooth crooner John Legend was honored with the BET Humanitarian Award for his good works, particularly his efforts to eradicate poverty through improved education.

The show was hosted by the multi-costumed Queen Latifah, who didn't just wear a bunch of different gowns, but also a leopard-print muumuu, a basketball jersey and her prison-warden outfit from Chicago.

If you thought 2009 was a big year for music, just wait until you see what 2010 has in store. While the past 12 months were all about Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Susan Boyle and Adam Lambert, 2010 is shaping up to be the year of the comeback, the sequel and the new look, with anticipated discs on tap from a reunited Blink-182, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Diddy, Kanye West, Vampire Weekend, Usher, MGMT and the soundtrack to the third "Twilight" film, "Eclipse." Pop Perry has been "spilling out material" for the follow-up to her breakthrough, One of the Boys, citing such über-pop acts as Ace of Base and the Cardigans as inspiration. She's worked with Weezer's Rivers Cuomo and Rihanna collaborator Tricky Stewart so far, but hasn't really nailed down a release date. While we know Britney Spears has also been in the studio, working on the sequel to Circus, its unknown if the back-on-track pop diva will finish up the disc in time for a 2010 release. Former rival Christina Aguilera, though, has reportedly started her electro-influenced follow-up to 2006's Back to Basics with an eclectic group of women, including M.I.A., Sia, Santigold and Ladytron, but has seemingly put it on hold until she finishes filming her bit for the movie "Burlesque." Also potentially on tap for 2010: a new album from Madonna, troubled British soul singer Amy Winehouse's long-awaited follow-up to her Grammy-winning Back to Black breakthrough, and the second album from She & Him, featuring actress Zooey Deschanel and singer/songwriter M. Ward. Rock Unlike Green Day, My Chemical Romance are not planning to do back-to-back concept albums. The band is prepping a more aggressive return after the high-concept The Black Parade, with superstar producer Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen) helping them stay on track. Seven years after their last effort, reunited pop punks Blink-182 are expected to release their first album since 2003's self-titled affair. Drummer Travis Barker is also wrapping work on his solo debut but said the plan is to write and record the Blink disc in the first part of the year. Other releases on tap include: the much-anticipated second album from former buzz band Vampire Weekend, a new disc from Canadian collective the Arcade Fire, a potential release from Radiohead, a second album from Jack White's Dead Weather, a possible get-back from the Strokes, a new Fleet Foxes effort, Kid Rock's latest, the sophomore disc from Grammy nominees MGMT, and a new Gorillaz album featuring vocals from Lou Reed, Mos Def and the Bee Gees' Barry Gibb. Though no information is available yet, we can only assume that the soundtrack to the third "Twilight" movie, "Eclipse," will be a monster. Hip-Hop/R&B He broke his long silence with Relapse and Refill in 2009, but Eminem has more in store for 2010, as he's promised to drop the second half of his recent fruitful spurt of creativity, Relapse 2. While we're not holding our breath for the epically delayed finale from Em's mentor, Dr. Dre, there's a possibility that Detox will also finally hit shelves this year. One album we know is coming out is Lil Wayne's rock-tinged Rebirth. After moving around more than a half-dozen times in 2009, the disc is now due February 1, just a week before Wayne is slated to go to prison for a year on gun charges. Of course, due to that Amazon.com slip-up, 500 lucky fans already have the disc, which quickly became readily available online, so it's possible the official release will change the track list up a bit. It's also possible T.I. could drop his next album very soon after being released to a halfway house following his 366-day sentence on federal weapons charges, and imprisoned rapper Gucci Mane recently said he already has his next album, The State vs. Radric Davis: The Appeal, ready to roll. Another CD everyone is holding their breath for is Drake's debut, Thank Me Later, which is expected to deliver on the hype created by his mixtapes and EP. After a few delays, Usher's Raymond vs. Raymond is now slated for a March release, with hype already built thanks to the hit single "Papers." Nas' former wife, Kelis, is promising a "futuristic disco" sound on her upcoming disc, Flesh Tone. N.E.R.D. will have a new, "very 3-D" sound, thanks to the recent addition of female vocalist Rhea, and Erykah Badu will finally drop New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) in February, promising a less politically driven effort this time around. We could finally get a listen to Missy Elliott's first album in five years, Block Party, as well as solo discs from Big Boi — his long-delayed Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty — and Andre 3000, as well as a possible new Outkast collabo. Though he's been laying low since his VMA stage rush on Taylor Swift, it's possible Kanye West will have some new music for us this year. We know Diddy is on tap to unleash his concept dance album Last Train to Paris, and Travis McCoy is prepping his solo debut as well as a new album from Gym Class Heroes. After promising a swan-song, three-disc set called LupE.N.D. last year, and then having second thoughts, Lupe Fiasco has reportedly been working on a CD called Lasers that could see light in 2010. Also bumped to the new year is the ninth studio album from hip-hop iron men and Jimmy Fallon house band the Roots, with How I Got Over, as well as Ludacris' Battle of the Sexes, a reported duet album with DTP home girl Shawnna. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, because with all this action, we might also get a new one from Lady Gaga, which could really be a monster. MTV Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper

HipHopWired Reports Atlanta Hip-Hop duo Playaz Circle has fans buzzing with anticipation over their second installment into the rap hemisphere, Flight 360. The DTP tag team revealed exclusively to HipHopWired that they're keyed up about the timing of this album, saying that the “climate” is right and it's time for them to take off. “Everything is about timing,” said Dolla. “Like one of the DJs told me, if we would've come out about five or six years ago, we probably would've gone gold with a song as big as “Duffle Bag Boy.” I think it just goes to show that the climate of the game is changing but the great part about that is we're able to adapt.” They then continued on to speak about the success of their landmark hit, “Duffle Bag Boy,” which ironically turned out to be both a gift and a curse. According to Dolla Boy it helped them gain fame on the Billboard charts but confused fans that were unsure whether the song was Playaz Circle's or the property of Young Money CEO, Lil Wanye. “I think fans will be able to identify with us more this go around. The first go around there was confusion over “Duffle Bag Boy.” Is it Lil Wayne? Playaz Circle? Who's who? I think the time between Flight 360 and Supply in Demand has allowed the fans to identify the artist, get to know us a little bit better and become familiar with our music.” Despite their previous issues, Tity Boi and Dolla Boy are promising to release a conceptual album. Dolla added that they plan on incorporating photo shoots, video shoots and songs that tie together to form a story line. “We basically do conceptual albums, we try and tie it all in from the photo shoots to the videos, all the way down to the actual arrangements of the songs, to the skits. We think that's what Hip-Hop's been missing, the substance. We've recorded over 70 or 80 songs and we've picked the right 14 or 15 songs that compliment the title of the album and where we were going with our career.” Not only can fans expect a conceptual album, they can expect features ranging from the group's DTP family to the legendary Raekwon The Chef from Wu-Tang. “We fuck with people who fuck with us. Raekwon, the Twins formerly of Jagged Edge, Bobby V, of course Ludacris, of course Lil Wayne…shout out to Young Money.” Flight 360 drops September 29th, and just before takeoff Playaz Circle is leaving fans with one promise: “We ain't gonna stop, we're gonna continue making good music for everybody and all our listeners.” Check out their second single "Gettin' Rich" featuring Ludacris from Flight 360: The Take Off below
