Back to the basics

Most African Americans are born in poverty. When they are raised watching

their piers or friends sell drugs or murders, exspect them to do the same.

Most of us are taught nothing better than that. some enjoy the image they

put on playing to be a hard core gangster, or just trying to prove to their friends

that they are down to do what ever it is it takes.

Adult Swim’s upfront presentation “Owns the 9ight” was the hottest ticket you couldn’t buy thanks to Jay-Z, who provided the evening’s entertainment as the network announced its 2011-2012 lineup. The hip-hop mogul performed an hour-long set with a live band at New York’s Roseland Ballroom, bringing out Swizz Beatz for “On to the Next One.” But Mr. Carter had a bigger reason to be there. He is expected to announce a development deal with Adult Swim to create an original animated series. His peers Pharrell, Ne-Yo, Kid Cudi, and Fabolous were also on hand to rock with the Jiggaman.

It was a family affair as G.O.O.D. Music helped Common celebrate his 39th birthday with a surprise party at The Redbury Hotel in Hollywood on Sunday night (March 13). Kanye West and Kid Cudi stuck close by the Chi-town rapper as he blew out the candles on his movie-themed cake inscribed with “Happy Born Day Rash.” The birthday boy mingled with actors Meagan Good and Erik Fellows before heading over to a nearby bowling alley to keep the celebration going until the early hours of Monday.

In related news, Kanye is scheduled to perform on March 19 at VEVO’s Power Station during the SXSW Film Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas.

12348733457?profile=originalLas Vegas, NV – December 31, 2010 – It was a night unlike any other the Vegas Strip has ever seen at the grand opening of Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on New Years Eve. Acclaimed global superstar DJ Erick Morillo kicked off the night with a set in the club’s Main Room and led the countdown to 2011, while Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre got the party started in the club’s VIP room with DJ Ross One. After the Jay-Z and Coldplay private concert in the event center at The Cosmopolitan the celebrties decended en masse to the new mega club for a historic opening. Kellan Lutz, who showed up wearing a black eye mask to avoid the Twi-Hards lined up outside to see him, settled into a table in Marquee’s Main Room next to Wilmer Valderamma. 50 Cent arrived with friend Floyd Mayweather Jr., who was in anything but a fighting mood, and the two were seen dancing to music by DJ Erick Morillo before heading downstairs to the VIP room. Channing Tatum and wife Jenna Dewan, Haylie Duff and boyfriend Nick Zano, Christina Milian, Abigail Spencer Pruitt, James Marsden, Jamie Kennedy, Jessica Szohr, Deryck Whibley, Jeremy Piven and Mark Salling were also spotted dancing in the Main Room. The club which total’s 60,000 square feet filled up to a capacity crowd of nearly 3000 people quickly and the VIP room, also know as The Boom Box was taken over by the superstar rapper Jay Z and rockband Coldplay and their famous friends. It was so packed with A-list celebrities that you couldn’t take two steps without bumping into a Grammy Winner. Rihanna and Diddy came by to party with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, who all held court at a center table with views of the Las Vegas Strip. Kanye West and John Mayer, who surprised the crowd with performances earlier in the night at the Comopolitan of Las Vegas’s grand opening concert, were also spotted at the exclusive after-party, as were Alex Rodriguez and girlfriend Cameron Diaz, Forest and Keisha Whitaker, Mark Wahlberg and wife Rhea Durham, Ellen Pompeo, Kirsten Dunst, Kings of Leon’s Jared Followill, Kelly Slater, Olivia Munn, Whitney Port and Emmanuelle Chriqui. Celebrities looking for a more relaxed scene flocked to the club’s third floor called The Library Room. Ashley Olsen enjoyed cocktails with boyfriend Justin Bartha early on, while Jared Leto showed up later in the night, following his 30 Second To Mars performance at The Palms. Magician David Copperfield and Dylan Lauren also enjoyed the vibe in the Library Room. Meanwhile, Mark Anthony and his wife Jennifer Lopez took over a table with 25 of their friends and family members and danced up a storm with pal Leah Remini. At one point, Anthony stole the club photographer’s camera and started taking photos of Lopez who was playfully posing for him while a few feet away Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine and Blake Lively were spotted dancing together on a banquette late into the night. Bottles of Ace of Spades champagne were flowing into the early hours and Jay-Z was spotted pouring glasses for friends including Gayle King. Solange Knowles did a special DJ set for her sister and brother-in-law and fellow DJ Samantha Ronson grabbed the mic to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Approximately 2:30 am Kanye West continued to surprise guests when he took over the mic in the DJ booth and treated them to an impromptu performance. Soon after Diddy ordered a bottle of Ciroc for every table in the roomas he requested his new hit “Ass on the Floor”. Then Jay-Z joined Kanye in the booth and the crowd was going crazy. Jay-Z wished everyone a Happy New Year and the two started singing West’s hit song, “Runaway” then their joint hit called “Monster”. West and Jay-Z were then joined by Rihanna in a singalong to her hit song, “What’s My Name” and the crowd was in a frenzy. Following Jay-Z and West’s second performance of the evening, Jay-Z asked comedian Aziz Ansari to join them in the DJ booth and entertain the crowd with a “New Years Eve joke.” Ansari said no, but Jay-Z would not relent and eventualy Ansari took the mic and got a few laughs but not before Jay, Kanye and Rhianna were joined by Beyonce in the booth at which point Jay stopped the music to wish happy new year to everyone in the room and to his wife “B”. the party wound down after 5:00 AM on New Years Day but not before Diddy and his girlfriend Cassie made a final stop to say hi to his friend Erick Morillo in the main rooms DJ booth, Morillo proceeded to play Diddy’s dance hit “Hello Good Morning” as the crowd and the camera’s went crazy. It was a star-studded beginning to a New Year and a historic grand opening for Marquee Las Vegas that has set the bar for the club business once again.

FAST FACTS:
*Approximately 90 students at Frayser High School are pregnant or have recently given birth

*The startling numbers fall in line with high teen pregnancy rates in the entire Frayser community

*A new initiative to help combat the problem will soon be introduced

About 90 students at a Memphis High School are either pregnant, or have been recently.

The startling news was confirmed by a high ranking city official and comes as the community plans to roll out a new initiative to help combat the problem.

However, one Frayser High School graduate says teen pregnancy is not a new problem for the school.

"When we would come back from summer break, there would be a thousand people pregnant. We were like, what's going on?" joked Alicia Williamson, who graduated from Frayser in 2004.

"There were a whole lot of bellies. You had to watch out so you didn't bump into them. Being 2011, I thought a lot of them would have thought this is not the right way to go, having babies during school time," she added.

The organization, Girls, Inc. teaches girls about preventing pregnancy.

Deborah Hester Harrison, who heads the organization, says Memphis' teen pregnancy rate stands at between 15 and 20 percent, almost twice the national average.

In the Frayser zip code, the rate is about 26 percent. Harrison partly blames the media.

"So much of our society is sexually oriented. As adults we can look at that and it doesn't impact us, but kids are different," Harrison said.

It's why Girls, Inc. offers classes where teenage girls "care for" computerized babies to give them a feel for what teenage parenthood is like.

The organization will also be part of a new initiative tentatively scheduled to be introduced next week.

Frank Mir got the job on Saturday for the Ultimate Fighting Championship's debut in Indianapolis, but that's about the only positive for him. On a card that produced seven decisions, Mir narrowly avoided being part of the eighth by landing a right knee to floor Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and record a knockout with 58 seconds left in their main-event bout at UFC 119. The result came after two-and-a-half sluggish rounds. AS IT HAPPENED: UFC 119 play-by-play Both men appeared tentative for much of the contest. Filipovic followed his customary habit of circling and waiting for openings to throw punches and kicks from the left, while Mir generally threw punches just long enough to close the distance for takedown attempts. Referee Herb Dean separated them and restarted the action each round after extended clinchwork standing against the cage. The Indianapolis crowd booed heavily at several points as Mir and Filipovic eyed each other warily or wrestled while standing against the cage. The end came when Filipovic charged forward in the waning minute to throw a punch combination. Mir grabbed the back of Filipovic's neck for a sloppy Muay Thai clinch, pulled his head down and slammed home the knee. Filipovic fell to the mat stunned and Mir landed two more punches on his unresisting foe before Dean could jump in to halt the bout. Mir criticized his own performance heavily after the fight. "I could have pushed the pace a little bit," he said. "I'm not happy at all." The former champion admitted that he was wary of Filipovic's dangerous left hand and left kick. Mir also found flaws in his own wrestling technique; Filipovic, who is well-known for his takedown defense, shut down all of Mir's attempts to bring the fight to the mat. Filipovic, taking the bout on just five weeks' notice as a replacement for the injured Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, saw his winning streak snapped at two. Mir rebounded from a loss in March. Other results Saturday: • Ryan Bader preserved his perfect record with a unanimous 30-27 decision over fellow light-heavyweight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the co-main event. Bader (12-0) occasionally swung away with powerful overhand right when they were standing, but he largely focused on outwrestling Nogueira (19-4). The winner took down his opponent six times in 12 attempts, according to Compustrike. Bader made no apologies for his strategy. "I just had to be careful," he said. "I had a lot on the line in this fight." The win could vault Bader into the top 10 for light heavyweights. Nogueira and Bader are Nos. 6 and 16 in the USA TODAY/SB Nation consensus rankings for light-heavyweights. • Sean Sherk (33-4-1) put the first blemish on Evan Dunham's professional record with a split decision that drew vocal criticism. Sherk controlled the pace of the first two rounds with takedowns and significant stretches of top control on the mat. Dunham (11-1) threatened with guillotine chokes multiple times, though, and clearly outstruck Sherk on the feet throughout the fight. Two judges scored the fight 29-28 for Sherk. One saw it by an identical score for Dunham. The crowd heavily booed the decision as it was announced. Sherk, a UFC ex-champion, regained his relevance by beating Dunham, the consensus No. 10 lightweight. It was the first fight for the oft-injured Sherk since May 2009 and his first win in almost two years . • Chris "Lights Out" Lytle (30-17-5) avenged his 2006 loss to former champion Matt "The Terror" Serra (11-7) by winning a unanimous 30-27 decision. It was the polar opposite from the tedium of their first fight, as the welterweights came in determined to slug away this time. Lytle, an experienced professional boxer, connected often with hooks and uppercuts as the shorter Serra tried to attack the body. Lytle praised Serra, a highly decorated jiu-jitsu practitioner and, for brawling with him rather than turning the fight into a grappling contest. "I can't give the guy enough credit for that," Lytle said. "That was awesome to me. He gave me the fight I wanted." The result was the fourth consecutive win for Lytle, the consensus No. 23 welterweight. Serra currently has the No. 13 ranking. • Melvin Guillard won his third bout in a row with a decision over Jeremy Stephens. Guillard (26-8-2, 1 no contest) spent three rounds constantly moving in to deliver one or two punches before slipping away while the slower Stephens (17-6) missed with counterstrikes. Guillard expressed dissatisfaction with his inability to knock out Stephens. "I respected his right hand a lot," Guillard said. " I didn't want to get clipped. .... I'm happy with the win but I'm not as happy with the performance, how it ended up, because I'm an exciting fighter."
