NEW YORK (NewsNation Now) — A K-9 handler and former police officer says it is “highly suspicious” that cadaver dogs may have missed the ‘skeletal’ remains found in a Florida reserve Wednesday, even if they were located underwater.
“If the body had been there, when they went by with cadaver dogs, and the body had been there for more than two or three minutes, the odor would have come through the water,” Kyle Heyen said on Dan Abrams Live. “They should have been able to locate that body.”
The FBI confirmed Wednesday that investigators found what appear to be human remains, along with personal items belonging to Brian Laundrie at the reserve.
The Laundrie family’s attorney told NewsNation that Laundrie’s parents “had initially advised law enforcement” that Brian may be in that area.
“It’s highly suspicious,” Heyen said. “If the body was there at that time, x weeks ago, and if it’s the same dog and the same quality of dog or same quality of training, they should have found him. They would have detected Laundrie’s body.”
Heyen is the principal and founder of Detector Dogs International, Inc. He says the methodology he trained with involved using actual human parts to teach the dogs.
“If the dogs are well trained, well maintained, and we’re in that area, then yeah, they should have smelled the odor of the human,” Heyen said.

A distraught Alec Baldwin repeatedly asked why he was given a “hot gun” after his prop weapon discharged on his New Mexico film set Thursday, accidentally killing a cinematographer and injuring the director, witnesses have claimed.
The tragic accident unfolded while Baldwin was filming his upcoming Western film “Rust” at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Sante Fe.
Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, died and director, Joel Souza, 48, was injured after they were both struck when the gun discharged, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said.
Immediately after the incident, an eyewitness told Hollywood gossip site Showbiz 411 that Baldwin started asking how he could have been given a “hot gun” — meaning a firearm loaded with real ammunition.
“In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun,” the actor allegedly kept saying.
The witness said Baldwin was in shock after the ordeal and he “had no idea how badly they were hurt or Halyna was dead.”
The film set was sent into lockdown and production was halted immediately after the accidental double shooting, which unfolded at about 2 p.m.
Hutchins was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she died from her injuries.
The director was being treated at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, authorities said.
“Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
No charges were filed as of late Thursday and detectives are still interviewing witnesses.
Baldwin was among those questioned by authorities, and he was pictured in tears as he spoke into a cellphone outside the sheriff’s office Thursday.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The FBI on Thursday identified human remains found in a Florida nature preserve as those of Brian Laundrie, a person of interest in the death of girlfriend Gabby Petito while the couple was on a cross-country road trip.
The remains, a backpack & notebook believed to belong to Laundrie were discovered Wednesday in a Florida wilderness park, according to the FBI. The area where they were found had been under water during earlier searches.
The FBI’s Denver office said in a news release that a comparison of dental records confirmed that the remains were Laundrie.
The discovery of the remains concluded a massive search involving federal, state & local law enforcement that began shortly after Laundrie disappeared Sept. 14, two weeks after the 23-year-old returned alone to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida.
Petito’s family reported her missing Sept. 11, launching a search that garnered worldwide media attention & focused largely on the Carlton Reserve wilderness park near the Laundrie home.
The body of Petitio, 22, was found Sept. 19 on the edge of Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park, which the couple had visited. The coroner there concluded she died of strangulation & her body had been where it was found for 3 or 4 weeks.
Laundrie returned home alone Sept. 1 in the Ford van the couple took on their trip. He was reported missing after telling his parents that he was going for a hike in the Carlton Reserve, a nature preserve that was a key area in the search.

NEW YORK — Communities in New York and Massachusetts are mourning the death of 20-year-old Madie Nicpon.
The Tufts University student and Suffern native died Sunday, a day after choking during a charity hot dog eating contest, authorities said.
“In the face of this painful loss, our hearts go out to Madie’s family and friends,” Tufts faculty members said in a statement. “The number of community members who turned out to lend support to each other, to Madie’s friends, and to her family was a testament to how many lives Madie touched during her time at Tufts.”
Nicpon, who was studying biopsychology at the university, was also a member of its lacrosse team. In an emotional Instagram post shared by the team, fellow student-athletes shared their “heartbreak.”
“Madie will be remembered as a bright light, a social butterfly, an amazing teammate, a kind and generous person, a wonderful sister and daughter and a Jumbo that we can all aspire to emulate,” the post continues.
A GoFundMe campaign for Nicpon’s family has raised more than $160,000 for funeral and medical expenses.

In mid-September, Marcel Schliebs, a disinformation researcher at the University of Oxford who had been tracking messaging that Chinese diplomats & state media spread on Twitter for 18 months, spotted the emergence of a surprising coronavirus origin theory.
Zha Liyou, the Chinese consul general in Kolkata, India, tweeted an unfounded claim that COVID-19 could have been imported to China from the United States through a batch of Maine lobsters shipped to a seafood market in Wuhan in November 2019. It marks the latest in a series of theories that have been pushed by pro-China accounts since the start of the pandemic.
With some further digging, Schliebs uncovered a network of more than 550 Twitter accounts, spreading a nearly identical message, translated into multiple languages — including English, Spanish, French, Polish, Korean & even Latin — at similar times each day between 8 a.m. & 11 a.m. China Standard Time.
Some of the accounts were “unsophisticated sock puppets” with “very few or zero followers,” Schliebs said, while others appeared to be accounts that were once authentic but had been hijacked & repurposed to spread disinformation.
“Attribution is really difficult,” said Schliebs, a postdoctoral researcher of computational propaganda at Oxford’s Programme on Democracy and Technology. “But we can see there’s a coordinated effort & that it’s a pro-Chinese narrative.”
Articles in Chinese media, shared on social networks, have repeatedly suggested that Covid-19 may have originated from frozen-food imports. The same diplomat Schliebs noticed pushing the Maine lobster theory last month had already tweeted in December about the theory that Covid could have arrived in Wuhan from elsewhere via the "cold chain" & called for further investigation into the baseless claim that the U.S. military was involved in spreading the virus.
“This is the third or fourth major different redirection Chinese officials have gone in to try & somehow pin the Covid outbreak on the U.S.,” Bret Schafer, the head of the information manipulation team at the Alliance for Securing Democracy, part of the nonprofit German Marshall Fund of the United States, said about the diplomats spreading the messaging bolstered by inauthentic accounts. “It looks crude & not sophisticated when you look at individual accounts. But these kinds of networks are designed to try & get topics to trend on social media.”

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot an unarmed woman after she called 911 to report a possible rape happening behind her home was sentenced Thursday to nearly 5 years in prison — the most the judge could impose but less than half the 12½ years he was sentenced to for his murder conviction that was overturned last month.
Mohamed Noor was initially convicted of third-degree murder & manslaughter in the 2017 fatal shooting of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a 40-year-old dual U.S.-Australian citizen & yoga teacher who was engaged to be married. But the Minnesota Supreme Court tossed out Noor’s murder conviction & sentence last month, saying the third-degree murder statute didn’t fit the case because it can only apply when a defendant shows a “generalized indifference to human life,” not when the conduct is directed at a particular person, as it was with Damond.
Judge Kathryn Quaintance, who also presided at Noor’s trial, granted prosecutors’ request to impose the maximum sentence in state guidelines on Noor’s manslaughter conviction, 57 months. In doing so, she brushed aside the defense’s request for 41 months, which is the low end of the range. With good behavior, Noor could be freed on supervised release by next summer.
Noor, who was fired after he was charged, has already served more than 29 months. In Minnesota, inmates who behave well typically serve two-thirds of their prison sentences & the remainder on supervised release.
Noor testified at his 2019 trial that he & his partner were driving slowly in an alley when a loud bang on their police SUV made him fear for their lives. He said he saw a woman appear at the partner’s driver’s side window & raise her right arm before he fired a shot from the passenger seat to stop what he thought was a threat.
He was sentenced to 12 1/2 years on the murder count & had been serving most of his time at an out-of-state facility.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Police have charged a convicted murderer with the slaying of a South Florida woman whose body was found in a canal after being missing for three weeks.
Eric Pierson was charged Saturday with first-degree murder for the slaying of 33-year-old Erika Verdecia. Her stabbed body was found in a suburban Fort Lauderdale canal.
Sunrise police say Pierson confessed to stabbing the single-mother with a screwdriver on Sept. 25.
Pierson had been released from prison in September 2020 after serving 27 years of a 40-year sentence for the 1993 beating and strangling 17-year-old Kristina Whitaker.
In 1985, Pierson broke into a home and slit a woman’s throat. He served four years.
