NEW YORK -- Washington Wizards teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton drew guns on each other during a Christmas Eve locker room argument over a gambling debt, according to The New York Post. Last week, the Wizards and Arenas acknowledged that Arenas had stored unloaded firearms in a container in his locker, and the NBA said it was looking into the situation. It was during that investigation that a confrontation between Arenas and Crittenton was revealed, according to a Yahoo! Sports report. The dispute stemmed from an unspecified disagreement, sources told Yahoo! Sports. Citing an anonymous source, the newspaper reported in Friday's edition, however, that the standoff was sparked when Crittenton became angry at Arenas for refusing to make good on a gambling debt. That prompted Arenas to draw on Crittenton, who then also grabbed for a gun, league security sources tell the Post. Asked by the Post about the confrontation, Arenas denied pulling a gun on Crittenton. "This is unprecedented in the history of sports," Billy Hunter, executive director of the Player's Association, told the Post. "I've never heard of players pulling guns on each other in a locker room." The Wizards said on the night of Dec. 24 that Arenas had stored unloaded firearms in a container in his locker at the arena and that the NBA was looking into the situation. On Tuesday, Washington, D.C. police said they were investigating a report that weapons were found inside a locker room at the Verizon Center. Now, the federal government is also involved. Ben Friedman, a spokesman for the US Attorney's Office in DC, told the Post "we're working with the Metropolitan Police Department on the investigation." With the close of the decade here, there is no shortage of “best of” lists reviewing top achievements throughout the pop culture landscape. But when it comes to most noteworthy music of the ‘00’s, one album that has been showing up on just about everyone’s list is 50 Cent’s 2003 debut Get Rich Or Die Tryin’. The seminal release, which has to date sold over 12 million copies worldwide, transformed the troubled Curtis Jackson, a former Queens, New York drug dealer and local mixtape favorite, into one of the biggest musical acts on the planet. Propelled by the hypnotic Dr. Dre-produced anthem “In da Club” and the backing of hip-hop’s paramount seller Eminem (50 was the first artist signed to Em’s Shady Records, which released the project jointly with Dre’s Aftermath Records), Get Rich represented more than just a commercial triumph. It was a cultural landmark that gave East Coast street rap a fresh platform, opening up a new world for the unlikely entertainment mogul. Looking back on the album, 50 Cent has a more personal attachment to Get Rich or Die Tryin’. “With Get Rich I had so much to prove on that album,” recalls the rapper who dropped his fourth studio album, Before I Self Destruct, in November. “Everything had to be perfect in my head. I wanted to make sure that everything I said captured my true feelings at that time. I just felt like it was God’s plan to be where I was at. My mind frame at that point was the music. Anything that would have come in my way at that point I would have removed it the best way I know how. The ‘hood teaches you to do it in a way that’s not sensible.” One of the aspects that made critics take note of 50 Cent was his surprising vulnerability, a trait that you would not normally associate with a combative, controversial artist who has been involved in high profile verbal sparring with everyone from Ja Rule, Jadakiss, and Game to Kanye West, Rick Ross, and most recently, Jay-Z. But 50 insist he was just keeping it real. “A lot of rappers don’t write about their fears or point out where they didn’t get the best of a situation,” he says. “So the first time I experimented with it was with songs like ‘Many Men.’ I’m telling folks that there is blood in my eyes and I can’t see. I’m hurt at that point. I’m vulnerable.” Yet, after Get Rich, 50 Cent’s life would never be the same as his success spun off a multi-million dollar label (G-Unit Records); a successful G-Unit clothing line; a major film (2005’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’); and a stable of platinum acts (a crew that included Game, Lloyd Banks, and Young Buck). But even as the commercial muscle has dramatically declined for 50 Cent, the spitter insists that he is still the same hungry kid who made the music world take notice. “That’s what people want from me…. to give them the real shit,” he says. “That’s a part of me. It’s necessary to have aggression to survive but that’s not all of me. There’s so much more.” Source: Vibe.com Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper

When Michael Vick was named the Eagles' recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award - a distinction he received in a vote by his teammates - it didn't take long for the selection to draw criticism. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an animal-rights organization, released a statement yesterday condemning the honor being given to Vick. PETA has been critical of the NFL and the Eagles since Vick was reinstated after serving 18 months for his role in a dogfighting operation. "The Philadelphia Eagles fumbled when they gave Michael Vick the Ed Block Courage Award, which was named after a man who advocated in behalf of abused children," the statement from PETA read. "Michael Vick should not be the person anyone points to as a model of sportsmanship, even though he has now exchanged dogs for touchdowns after serving time for extreme cruelty to animals. We wish him well in educating others, but this is not appropriate and does not mark a joyous moment in NFL history." The Ed Block is an annual award given by each NFL team in memory of the former Baltimore Colts trainer. It is usually awarded to a player that has shown courage in rebounding from an injury or overcoming extraordinary difficulties. Past Eagles winners include long-snapper Jon Dorenbos, whose mother was murdered by his father when he was 12, and Correll Buckhalter, now with Denver who came back from several knee injuries. Vick, who did not practice yesterday because of a quadriceps bruise, said he appreciated the gesture by his teammates. "I've had to overcome a lot, more than probably one single individual can bear," Vick said. "Take a look at what I've been through. You ask certain people to walk in my shoes, they probably couldn't do it. Probably 95 percent of the people in this world - because nobody had to endure what I've been through, situations I've been put in, situations I've placed myself in, decisions that I've made - whether they were good or bad." Eagles coach Andy Reid, who said the vote was unanimous, was asked if he was worried about how his players' selection would be interpreted in light of the quarterback's past. "I'm not sure you can explain it, unless you've kind of gone through it here with him," Reid said. "Everybody is going to have their opinion on it I'm sure. Until you've been with him for the hours that his teammates have been with him and seen him through all these different things that he's had to go through, that time-tested part of it, you can't appreciate it. I don't expect everybody to understand it." Donovan McNabb, who lobbied Reid to acquire Vick, said the honor was "well deserved." "I don't care what people say on the outside," McNabb said. "That was something voted on by his peers." Philadelphia Inquirer Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper

Videos After The Jump Benzino recently resurfaced, taking shots at Royce Da 5'9 and Slaughterhouse. In a video shot by the former owner of The Source he addressed the beef and at the end of the clip showed a firearm. New Jack Swing pioneer and Blackstreet founder Teddy Riley is denying reports that he assaulted one of his daughters, claiming the allegation is the result of a financial dispute. Riley's 18-year-old daughter Taja filed a temporary restraining order against her father, claiming that she and her older sister were stomped and punched. The Los Angeles court filing also states that Teddy Riley allegedly threatened to kill them while swinging a Rock Band video game guitar. In a prepared statement, Riley explained that he spoiled his children over the years, and his daughter’s legal case is a response to him being a stronger disciplinarian. “I love my daughters, but I will not allow my children to disrespect me in my home. Contrary to what I have been accused of, I would never beat my children,” Riley stated to TMZ.com. “Perhaps, I should have been a stronger disciplinarian as they were growing up. I worked very hard so that my children would want for nothing. In hindsight, I see that it was a mistake to give them everything they wanted so that they could have the childhood I never had. Unfortunately, they have taken me, and the privileged life I have given them, completely for granted.” While not directly addressing specifics from the incident, Riley further alluded to the confrontation happening over some form of disrespect. “Instead of being appreciative and realizing how fortunate they are, my children have an inflated sense of entitlement and expectation without having to work or earn their way,” Riley continued. “However, my 'children' are no longer children, they are adults and I am trying to instill in them values and a work ethic of their own. I am not an uptight Dad, I am as hip as they come but I will not tolerate being taken advantage of or disrespected, especially in my home… I'm asking everyone to let this one go... I'm only being a good parent. I'm a great father and everyone who knows me, knows this is true.” At press time, Teddy Riley has to remain at least 100 yards from his daughter Taja until their January 2010 hearing. A lawsuit filed on behalf of Manny Pacquiao on Wednesday seeking compensatory and punitive damages for defamation of character names Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, as well as Floyd Mayweather. Jr. and Floyd Mayweather Sr., attorney Daniel Petrocelli told FanHouse, moments ago. A senior attorney with the Los Angeles-based O'Melveny and Myers law firm, who gained a wrongful death civil conviction against O.J. Simpson in 1997, Petrocelli was reached within an hour of filing the suit. "We filed a defamation of character lawsuit in the federal court in Las Vegas, Nevada, against the Mayweathers, Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer based on their false and defamatory statements about Manny Pacquiao -- specifically their publicly stating that Pacquiao was taking steroids or other illegal steroids or other illegal drugs to enhance his performance, knowing that there is absolutely no basis for any such assertions," said Petrocelli.

"We may be naming others as well, and may be adding others who have made comments since the lawsuit was filed. These guys have no right saying what they're saying. It's knowingly false, highly injurious," said Petrocelli. "Manny has an absolutely unblemished reputation, and accomplished extraordinary achievements through hard work and preparation," said Petrocelli, " and he can't sit by and allow people to accuse him of cheating because they can't beat him in the ring." In what he calls "my last official statement regarding" these matters, Pacquiao, a seven-division world champion, addressed rumors concerning steroid use, his ability to gain weight, and his view of the drug-testing controversy which appears to have scuttled negotiations for his potential WBO welterweight (147 pounds) title defense against Mayweather. "There seems to be concern from numerous members of the sports industry -- from writers, to reporters, even other athletes, regarding why I am concerned with random blood testing," said Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 knockouts). "As I have stated before I have never used anabolic steroids nor do I even know what they look like. I view using steroids, synthetic growth hormone, or any other illegal or banned substance as cheating. "I would never cheat this sport that I love. I would never cheat the legacies of the great champions I have been blessed to challenge. I would never do anything to cheat such great champions as Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, all of the Mexican warriors that I have been blessed to go into the ring and do battle with." Pacquiao and Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) were tentatively slated for March 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but promoter, Bob Arum, said that the "filing of a [defamation of character lawsuit] on Wednesday in the federal court in Las Vegas "effectively terminates everything. "Dan Petrocelli, one of the senior litigating partners, has filed the suit in Las Vegas," said Arum. "So this is serious stuff." Petrocelli said the suit seeks "compensatory and punitive damages." "No amount of money is specified," said Petrocelli, "but given the damage that these people have already done, it would be in the tens and tens of millions of dollars." Potentially the most lucrative matchup in boxing history, the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout was expected to garner a career-best of nearly $40 million for each fighter. But negotiations became increasingly contentious since they began shortly after Pacquiao's 12th-round knockout of Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14. Mayweather's side had demanded that both fighters be randomly tested for drugs using urinalysis and blood work that could be drawn as close to the fight as possible, while Pacquiao had agreed only to random urine tests, contending that he would prefer not to have blood drawn within 30 days of the fight because taking blood from him that close to the competition would weaken him. "My concern as a fighter is that there should be some limitations and agreements on how much blood they can take from someone prior to a fight. My other concern is how close to the actual fight itself can they take the blood," said Pacquiao. "It is my opinion that taking blood from a person can weaken you. I do not want to be in a weakened state when I enter the ring against any fighter." Pacquiao was, however, found to have had blood drawn 24 days from his May 2, second-round knockout of Ricky Hatton. "My concern has never been with someone randomly checking me with regards to blood or urine. I volunteered immediately to have my urine tested anytime someone wanted to -- all the way up to the time I am walking into the ring," said Pacquiao. "It was later brought to my attention and the attention of my staff that you can not test for synthetic growth hormone through urine; you could only detect synthetic growth hormone through blood tests," said Pacquiao. "Before all of these blood-testing and demands from other people, I had never even heard of synthetic growth hormone. I have never seen it before nor have I ever used it." The 31-year-old Pacquiao, whose career began at 106 pounds, attributes his ability to carry his power from lower to higher weight classes to the fact that "I eat foods that build muscle," and, "I work out hard." "I take my training very serious. I train 30 rounds a day to be in the best shape during a fight so I can give the fans the best show I can. I eat very healthy -- like chicken and fish and a lot of rice," said Pacquiao. "In order to make these new heavier weight classes, I have to eat more then I have ever eaten in my life. I actually have to eat five times a day and bigger meals than I have ever eaten before." Citing "hard feelings," Arum had said that he was prepared to announce New York's newly-crowned, WBA junior middleweight (154 pounds) champion, Yuri Foreman (28-0, eight KOs), as the new opponent for Pacquiao. "This thing [Mayweather fight] is hopeless. We feel that we've been trying, but that this isn't going to happen," said Arum, who also promotes Foreman. "I think that we're going to end up going with Foreman. Although it's not official yet, that's my position at this time," said Arum. "We're going ahead, I'm going to enjoy the New Year, and then, I'll be back in Las Vegas on Saturday night. By Monday, we'll have everything put together." Kid Cudi has never been a rapper that finds it necessary to bring down another rapper in order to promote himself. He is, however, a man that apparently believes in respect and will immediately shut down those that choose to not show him such courtesy. During a show at the House Of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the Man on the Moon spoke on his recent activity involving the assault on a fan that resulted in him being ejected from Lady Gaga's tour. The media has found many different angles and spins to place on the incident so Cudi has found no other alternative but to provide a little clarity and defend himself. "They trying to make me look like the poster boy for violence and ignorance," Cudi said. "I tell motherf*ckers I'm the poster boy for honesty, realness, anarchy, I don't give a f*ck about this business." Almost like a punching bag, the young rapper has been placed under the microscope and beaten by many, being judged for his preference and methods in showcasing his material his own distinct way. What started as a response turned quickly into his own uproar as the rapper proceeded to provide further commentary on the music industry and how his own experiences have forever changed his perceptions on particular artists. "I'm the truest motherf*cker in this business and people trying to destroy me. All these other n*ggas that y'all probably fans of is sucker a** n*ggas, I met them. N*ggas I was a fan of when I was buying their CDs, I'm not a fan of they music no more. Maybe the inmates really are running the asylum. A correction officer has been disciplined for dozing on the job after a colleague snapped a picture of her asleep while on post at a Rikers Island infirmary, officials said yesterday. A clearly conked-out Nadja Green is leaning in a chair with her head back, arms folded, eyes closed and mouth open. But even more alarming is an amused inmate seen hovering above her, mere inches from a set of keys that hangs from her belt. The picture was circulated around the department, and a source e-mailed it to The Post. Green was transferred on the island and placed on modified duty watching female inmates. She will face charges of sleeping on the job and other security- and performance-related charges. "We do not expect this type of behavior or performance from our officers, nor do we tolerate it," said city correction spokesman Steve Morello. The officer who took the picture, Claudel Barrau, was also transferred and placed on modified duty. Morello said possession and use of cellphones in jails, even by guards, is prohibited. "They are only allowed to carry a cell into a property locker and not into jail proper," Morello said. "And not where inmates circulate. It's a basic and obvious regulation and this represents a breach." Officials said the embarrassing photo was taken earlier this month in the prison's North Infirmary Command, formerly Rikers Island Hospital, which houses nearly 400 sick prisoners. The facility includes a wing for AIDS patients, one for sex offenders and one for exceptionally violent inmates. The disciplined officers will not be supervising inmates, according to officials. Morello said the picture was brought to the attention of the department's senior management. He said officials do not believe the sleeping officer was ever in any danger. There will be no charges against the inmate in the picture. Green, who turned 30 yesterday, has been on the job 4½ years. She lives in Queens and could not be reached for comment. Barrau, 47, has been on the job 18 years. When approached by a Post photographer at his Long Island home, he asked, "Why are you taking my picture?" A prison source described Green as "the Precious of Corrections," a reference to the movie about a teen from a dysfunctional family. A source said Green had a difficult upbringing and is the mother of several children. The source said she worked 96 hours of overtime this month. A union official said prison authorities should avoid a rush to judgment. "Many correction officers are forced to work 70 to 80 hours of mandatory overtime," said Correction Officer Benevolent Association spokesman Michael Skelly. "Since we don't know the particular circumstances of that particular officer, we are not going to condemn her. She may have been sick. "We believe it was highly suspect for the other officer to take a picture and potentially jeopardize her safety." New York Post Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper
