April 25 (Reuters) - Harry Belafonte, a singer, songwriter & groundbreaking actor who started his entertainment career belting "Day O" in his 1950s hit song "Banana Boat" before turning to political activism, has died at the age of 96.
Belafonte died of congestive heart failure at his home in New York on Tuesday with his wife Pamela by his side.
As a Black leading man who explored racial themes in 1950s movies, Belafonte would later move on to working with his friend Martin Luther King Jr. during the U.S. civil rights movement in the early 1960s. He became the driving force behind the celebrity-studded, famine-fighting hit song "We Are the World" in the 1980s.
Belafonte once said he was in a constant state of rebellion that was driven by anger.
"I've got to be a part of whatever the rebellion is that tries to change all this," he said in 2001. "The anger is a necessary fuel. Rebellion is healthy."
Handsome and suave, Belafonte came to be known as the "King of Calypso" early in his career. He was the first Black person allowed to perform in many plush nightspots & also had racial breakthroughs in movies at a time when segregation prevailed in much of the U.S.
In "Island in the Sun" in 1954 his character entertained notions of a relationship with a white woman played by Joan Fontaine, which reportedly triggered threats to burn down theaters in the American South.
In the 1960s he campaigned with King & in the 1980s, he worked to end apartheid in South Africa & coordinated Nelson Mandela's first visit to the U.S.

MEXICO CITY (AP) An impoverished man who went into a field to steal a pair of broccoli stalks was beaten and burned to death by a mob in central Mexico.
Local police managed to take the man away from the village of San Miguel Tianguistenco, but he died later of his injuries. The area is just east of Mexico City.
The chief prosecutor for the central state of Puebla vowed Thursday to find & punish those responsible for the killing.
“A poor person, out of necessity, went into a field to take a pair of broccolis & according to the preliminary information I have, that gave rise to them abducting him, beating him & burning him,” prosecutor Gilberto Higuera said.
Julio Huerta, the state interior secretary, said an estimated 150 townspeople participated in the brutality. Initial reports suggest that some beat the man with a baseball bat & others doused him with gasoline.
The man was identified only by his first name, Apolonio, in accordance with Mexico's laws protecting the identity of crime suspects & victims.
“This is truly an act we cannot overlook ... we are going to charge all of those who committed this savage act,” Higuera said.
Mexico has seen such mob attacks with some frequency in the past.
In 2019, 1 of the largest mob killings in recent memory occurred in another village in Puebla, when inhabitants killed 7 men they accused of kidnapping.

NEW YORK (AP) — Longtime CNN host Don Lemon is out at the cable news network a little over 2 months after apologizing to viewers for on-air comments about Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley.
CNN did not provide a public explanation for Lemon’s departure. But on the “CNN This Morning” co-host’s own Twitter account, Lemon contended the news came as a surprise to him & characterized it as a firing.
“I was informed this morning by my agent that I have been terminated by CNN. I am stunned,” he wrote in a statement posted shortly after 12 p.m. Eastern. “After 17 years at CNN I would have thought that someone in management would have the decency to tell me directly. At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network.”
CNN issued a rebuttal on its PR account: “Don Lemon’s statement about this morning’s events is inaccurate. He was offered an opportunity to meet with management but instead released a statement on Twitter.”
In mid-February, Lemon caused an uproar when, during a discussion on “CNN This Morning” with co-hosts Poppy Harlow & Kaitlan Collins about the ages of politicians, he said that the 51-year-old Haley was not “in her prime.” A woman, he said, was considered in her prime “in her 20s, 30s & maybe her 40s.”
Harlow challenged Lemon, trying to clarify what he was referencing: “I think we need to qualify. Are you talking about prime for childbearing or are you talking about prime for being president?”
“Don’t shoot the messenger, I’m just saying what the facts are,” Lemon responded.
Lemon issued a statement the same day saying he regretted his “inartful & irrelevant” comments.

NEW YORK (AP) — Fox News said Monday it has “agreed to part ways” with Tucker Carlson, its popular and controversial host, less than a week after settling a lawsuit over the network’s 2020 election reporting.
The network said in a press release that the last program of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” aired Friday. “We thank him for his service to the network as a host & prior to that as a contributor.”
Carlson became Fox’s most popular personality after replacing Bill O’Reilly in Fox’s prime-time lineup in 2016. He’s also consistently drawn headline for controversial coverage, including most recently airing tapes from the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection to minimize the impact of the deadly attack.
There was no immediate explanation from Fox about why Carlson was leaving.
Fox agreed last week to pay Dominion Voting Systems more than $787 million & acknowledged that some of its reporting following the 2020 election, which allowed former President Donald Trump’s aides to amplify false charges of election fraud — was incorrect.
Carlson was recently named in a lawsuit filed by Abby Grossberg, a Fox News producer fired after claiming that Fox lawyers had pressured her to give misleading testimony in the Dominion lawsuit.
Fox has countered with its own lawsuit, trying to bar Grossberg from disclosing confidential discussions with Fox attorneys & saying in a statement that “her allegations in connection with the Dominion case are baseless.”
“Fox News Tonight” will air in Carlson’s 8 p.m. ET prime-time slot, hosted by a rotating array of network personalities, for the time being.

A man in Punjab, India, was arrested Saturday for allegedly attacking his wife & his 17-year-old son with an axe earlier in the week after suspecting they had an affair.
Harjit Singh left his son Lovepreet Singh, 17 & wife Jaswinder Kaur, 38, with serious injuries after striking them with the axe multiple times at Kotla village in the city of Samrala on Thursday.
The man then fled the scene with his other 14-year-old son & was later arrested by the Khanna Police in the city of Anandpur Sahib.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Waryam Singh said that the man told police he suspected that his wife developed a relationship with their own son & allegedly tried to kill them.
"During questioning, the accused said that he was keeping an eye on his wife & elder son for 5 days. On Thursday morning he assaulted both of them with an intention to kill them, however they survived," said the DSP.
The victims were transferred to a hospital in Chandigarh, but no details were revealed about their conditions or the severity of their injuries. The Indian Express, however, reported that they have undergone multiple surgeries.

One of the survivors of a Mexican cartel kidnapping reportedly pulled a gun during a fight between children.
Latavia McGee, 34, was 1 of 4 Americans who was kidnapped in Mexico by cartel members who mistook them for Haitian drug smugglers. The group had traveled from South Carolina to Mexico so Ms McGee could get a cosmetic procedure when the group was taken.
She was 1 of only 2 of her group who survived the ordeal. Shaheed Woodward & Zindell Brown, who traveled with her, were killed. A fourth companion, Eric Williams, was shot in the leg, but survived. Ms McGee returned to the US uninjured.
She allegedly took her daughter to an apartment complex in Myrtle Beach, SC to fight another girl. A relative pulled her away from the scene.
Ms McGee allegedly returned to the scene and the children began to fight. The adults at the complex began to fight as well, which culminated with Ms McGee allegedly pulling a pistol from her purse & "waving it around."
The incident occurred on 17 February — before her kidnapping & police have only now acted on the warrant after reportedly giving her time to recuperate & spend time with her children.
She was ultimately arrested & charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Ms McGee was held on a $10,000 bond.

SPRING, Texas (Click2Houston) – The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office said deputies have arrested a woman who is accused of injuring a child in Spring.
According to the constable’s office, on April 19, deputies responded to the 4800 block of Aquagate Dr. for a welfare check on a child.
When they arrived, deputies were told the child had physical injuries. As they investigated, they learned Alexis Jackson, 30, had allegedly kicked and stomped the child’s head, causing visible injuries.
The child was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Child Protective Services was also contacted.
Jackson was arrested and charged with injury to a child. Her bond was set at $20,000.

A sister of LA Clippers star Kawhi Leonard was 1 of 2 women sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of an elderly woman in a Southern California casino in 2019.
Kimesha Williams, 1 of Leonard's sisters & Candace Townsel were convicted in February for the murder of 84-year-old Afaf Assad in a bathroom at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California. Sentencing for the first-degree murder convictions was handed down Friday.
Williams & Townsel went to the casino on Aug. 31, 2019 & Assad & her husband entered with a purse containing approximately $1,000 for gambling. When Assad went into a bathroom, Williams allegedly followed her & Townsel stayed outside to be the lookout.
A short time later, a woman in another stall heard a loud thud. Williams & Townsel were seen fleeing to the exit. Assad was found bleeding on the floor. She had a fractured skull & died 4 days later.
Williams denied killing Assad in a statement read by her attorney at the sentencing hearing.
Leonard grew up in the Riverside area & developed into a college star at San Diego State before becoming one of the NBA's top players.
Leonard's father, Mark, was a murder victim in 2008.
