LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks Jr. has died after battling prostate and other cancers. He was 67.

Spinks died Friday night, according to a release from a public relations firm. His wife, Brenda Glur Spinks, and a few close friends and other family members were by his side when he passed away.

Spinks won gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. But he rose in prominence when he beat Muhammad Ali for the heavyweight title in 1978.

Spinks had only seven professional fights under his belt when he got into the ring with Ali. The St. Louis native also was outweighed by Ali by more than 25 pounds.

QUINCY, MASS. (WHDH) - A Quincy man is facing criminal charges after police say he held his girlfriend against her will in their apartment for the last week and tried to kill her when she managed to escape by jumping out of a second-story window on Wednesday.

Officers responding to a report of a woman screaming for help on Wednesday found the area quiet and spoke with neighbors who said a man had just grabbed a woman from behind, covered her mouth, and dragged her back into an apartment, according to police.

After forcing their way into the apartment, officers say they found the woman unresponsive on a bed who was “agonal breathing” and had “red marks on her throat.” She was rushed to Boston Medical Center by ambulance.

An investigation determined her boyfriend, Matthew McAuliffe, 32, had held her against her will for the last week and she jumped from a second-story window to escape.

“We want to publicly commend the neighbors for getting involved,” police wrote in a statement. “They did exactly what we would hope: They contacted 9-1-1 and observed from a safe location. They were able to provide us with information needed to quickly locate the victim. We truly believe their actions, coupled with the immediate actions of (the officers) may very well have saved this young woman’s life.”

McAuliffe was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing at his arraignment in Quincy District Court on charges including assault to murder, aggravated assault and battery, strangulation, assault and battery on an intimate partner, and kidnapping.

MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) — Supervisors in a Mississippi county are discussing courtroom security after a video showed a man trying to attack a justice court judge during a hearing.

The incident happened Jan. 7 in Pike County Justice Court, when 27-year-old Sidney Newsome was making a court appearance after being charged with domestic violence.

Pike County supervisors on Friday watched a courtroom security video that showed Newsome arguing with a transport officer and Justice Court Judge Aubrey Rimes.

As the officer led Newsome toward a side door, He lunged at the judge and the officer pulled him back. Newsome threw papers at the judge and tried to come around the side of the court clerk’s desk.

The clerk moved away and the man threw a phone at Rimes. The judge walked toward the man, who threw more paper at him as the officer tried to hold him back. The judge grabbed the man and pinned him onto a table before deputies arrived.

Rimes charged the Newsome with contempt of court, and chief sheriff’s deputy Brad Bellipanni said he will probably be charged with simple assault. The man remained in jail without bond.

Pike County supervisors had a closed-door meeting Friday to discuss courtroom security, but took no action. After the meeting, board president Robert Accardo said, “We’re going to have to do something.”

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German prosecutors have confiscated more than 50 million euros ($60 million) worth of bitcoin from a fraudster. There’s only one problem: they can’t unlock the money because he won’t give them the password.

The man was sentenced to jail and has since served his term, maintaining his silence throughout while police made repeated failed efforts to crack the code to access more than 1,700 bitcoin, said a prosecutor in the Bavarian town of Kempten.

“We asked him but he didn’t say,” prosecutor Sebastian Murer told Reuters on Friday. “Perhaps he doesn’t know.”

Bitcoin is stored on software known as a digital wallet that is secured through encryption. A password is used as a decryption key to open the wallet and access the bitcoin. When a password is lost the user cannot open the wallet.

The fraudster had been sentenced to more than two years in jail for covertly installing software on other computers to harness their power to “mine” or produce bitcoin.

When he went behind bars, his bitcoin stash would have been worth a fraction of the current value. The price of bitcoin has surged over the past year, hitting a record high of $42,000 in January. It was trading at $37,577 on Friday, according to cryptocurrency and blockchain website Coindesk.

Prosecutors have ensured the man cannot access the largesse, however.

HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) — A man who barricaded himself in a North Carolina house with a woman and two children shot and wounded three police officers who tried to enter the home during the hourslong standoff, authorities said Friday. The woman was found dead and the suspect was later killed by police.

The children were uninjured, and the officers’ injuries were not life-threatening, said High Point Police Chief Travis Stroud.

The approximately 11-hour standoff ended when Josue Drumond-Cruz fired at officers who were assisting from the nearby Greensboro Police Department, and they returned fire, killing him, Stroud said. The woman’s identity and cause of death weren’t immediately released. The chief said he believes that she and Drumond-Cruz were in a relationship.

The standoff began after 11 p.m. Thursday when officers on patrol responded to a call about shots being fired. They found Drumond-Cruz in the yard and tried to communicate with him but he was uncooperative. He then went inside and came back out brandishing a rifle that appeared similar to an AR-15, Stroud said.

A tactical team and negotiators arrived, and investigators determined the woman and children were inside. About four hours into the standoff, and with no contact from the suspect, officers tried to enter the home and Drumond-Cruz opened fire on them, striking three officers, Stroud said.

Stroud said Drumond-Cruz also fired shots from the house periodically throughout the standoff.

“We had a lot of gunfire coming from inside the house throughout the morning,” he said.

About 10:15 a.m., the suspect shot at tactical officers who were assisting from the nearby Greensboro Police Department, and they returned fire, killing him, Stroud said.

Two officers were treated and released for wounds to the hand and shoulder, respectively. A third officer underwent surgery for a leg wound. All three were doing well and expected to recover, Stroud said.

T.I. and Tiny's reality show is pressing pause as the couple faces allegations of sexual abuse, even though they've vehemently denied the claims.

Production on "T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle" came to a grinding halt Friday as MTV put things on ice. Network honchos said, "We are aware of the allegations, and while they are not connected to our show, we have reached out to T.I. and Tameka Harris, as well as local and state officials."

Last month several women posted allegations on social media -- claiming the couple had drugged or coerced them into having sexual encounters. As far as we know, none of the accusers have reported claims to law enforcement, or filed lawsuits.

Still, MTV says, "Given the serious nature of the allegations, we have decided to suspend production in order to gather more information."

T.I. has strongly denied the allegations, and threatened legal action against at least one accuser.

The show had been shooting in Atlanta since December, but with this shutdown -- first reported by Deadline -- the fate of the 4th season is up in the air.

Phil Collins' ex cleaned up good at an auction for all of her jewelry & clothing ... including a $22k score for the singer's gold records & awards that had a severely low opening bid.

The folks over at Kodner Galleries in Florida auctioned off Orianne Cevey's collection of jewelry & clothing on Wednesday for a whopping $2,165,592. That number also included $22k for multiple gold LPs and "Assorted Phil Collins Awards."

We're told the first four auction lots -- the awards and gold records -- drew an extraordinary level of interest ... with more than 350 phone & online bids recorded. The final bidding price for those items -- which included a gold record of Robert Plant’s "The Principle of Moments" -- was a cool $6,325. Remember ... the opening bid was just one hundred bucks.

Because we know you're curious ... her fine jewelry collection netted $1,694,000. Five of her watches -- including 3 Rolex's & 2 Patek Philippe -- hauled in $235,572. And, some of her designer purses & clothing brought home $61,435. What's she gonna do with all the money? We're told a portion of the sales will be donated to Orianne's charity, Never Give Up Foundation.

For those who missed out on this auction ... ya need not worry. Kodner is holding a second auction featuring similar items from Orianne next month.

As we reported ... Orianne had said now that she moved out of Phil's mansion & downsized to a smaller house, she decided to unload items that no longer "spark joy."

A Louisiana mom was shot dead by hitmen whom her accused-rapist brother had hired to kill her daughter — pretending to be the target to save her child’s life, officials said.

Brittany Cormier, 34, was found shot to death in her Montegut home on Jan. 13 along with a 37-year-old neighbor, Hope Nettleton, who had been visiting her at the time, Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Timothy Soignet said.

Investigators quickly focused on Cormier’s brother Beaux Cormier, 35, a convicted sex offender accused of raping his niece, the sheriff said.

They have accused him of hiring two friends to kill the girl — even helping carry out surveillance as he joined them on the first planned mission, which was aborted.

When the killers struck on Jan. 13, Brittany Cormier pretended to be their target — as her daughter and stepdaughter hid in a closet, the sheriff told the Advocate.

“Brittany Cormier was murdered as a result of telling the shooter she was in fact the rape victim, likely saving the life of the actual rape victim,” Soignet said in a release.

Nettleton was shot dead while trying to fight off the gunmen, he said.

Samantha LeMaire, a friend who said Cormier was “like a sister” to her, told the Advocate that the mom “would do anything for her kids.”

“I like to think she locked them in the closet to protect them,” she said of the daughter and stepdaughter. The girls’ names and ages were not disclosed.

Soignet told the Advocate that Cormier quickly became a suspect because there was a “pretty solid rape case” against him “which provided motive.”

Fellow suspects Andrew Eskine, 25, and Dalvin Wilson, 22, later confessed to being hired for the hit, the report said. All three are being held on $2 million bond on two counts of first-degree murder.

“The death penalty is definitely on the table,” District Attorney Joe Waitz Jr. said.

Cormier — already a convicted sex offender — still also faces third-degree rape for the alleged attack on his niece, the sheriff said.
