LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A former U.S. Olympics gymnastics coach with ties to disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar killed himself Thursday, hours after being charged with turning his Michigan gym into a hub of human trafficking by coercing girls to train & then abusing them, authorities said.

John Geddert was supposed to appear in an Eaton County court, near Lansing. His body was found at a rest area along Interstate 96, according to state police.

“This is a tragic end to a tragic story for everyone involved,” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said.

Nessel earlier announced that Geddert was charged with two dozen crimes, including sexual assault, human trafficking and running a criminal enterprise. The charges were the latest fallout from the sexual abuse scandal involving Nassar, a former Michigan State University sports doctor now in prison.

Geddert, 63, was head coach of the 2012 U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team, which won a gold medal. He was long associated with Nassar, who was the Olympic team’s doctor & also treated injured gymnasts at Twistars, Geddert’s Lansing-area gym.

Among the charges, Geddert was accused of lying to investigators in 2016 when he denied ever hearing complaints about Nassar. But the bulk of the case against him involved his gym in Dimondale & how he treated the young athletes whose families paid to have them train under him.

Geddert was charged with using his strong reputation in gymnastics to commit a form of human trafficking by making money through the forced labor of young athletes.

Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving has an idea to change the NBA logo to honor Kobe Bryant -- and Bryant's widow, Vanessa Bryant, fully supports it.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Irving tweeted a modified NBA logo with Bryant front and center, with the caption "Gotta Happen, idc what anyone says. BLACK KINGS BUILT THE LEAGUE."

Vanessa Bryant shared Irving's post via Instagram story with her own caption, "love this. @KyrieIrving." LaMelo Ball, Stephen Jackson, and Dez Bryant also posted comments supporting the idea on Irving's original post.

Since Bryant's death in a helicopter accident in January of last year, the idea of changing the logo to Bryant's silhouette has gained traction. A change.org petition in support of the idea has gained 3.2 million signatures since early 2020. The creator of the NBA logo, current CEO and President of brand identity and communications consultancy firm Singlevision Alan Siegel, told Newsweek at the time "It's quite clear that this [Bryant] was a very respected figure by players and around the world and this is a really serious thing that should be considered by the league."

Former Laker Jerry West is the current silhouette of the NBA logo which has been in place since 1969. West has supported the idea of the logo being changed in the past, including a 2015 interview with HuffPost Live.

German customs authorities Wednesday announced the largest seizure of cocaine in European history, more than 23 tons discovered in two raids this month at ports in Hamburg, Germany and Antwerp, Belgium.

German customs official Rene Matchke told reporters the 28-year-old owner of a Dutch import company was arrested Wednesday in the Netherlands, where police say both shipments were bound.

German officers had first discovered 16 tons of cocaine hidden in containers from Paraguay at the port of Hamburg February 12, following a tip from a Netherlands-based company. German and Dutch investigations led the officials Sunday to seize another 7.2 tons of cocaine at the port of Antwerp.

German and Dutch police confirm the two shipments account for the largest amount of cocaine confiscated in a criminal investigation, and one of the top five in the world.

German customs officials say the investigation is ongoing and that they do not believe the man who was arrested acted alone. They say the drug haul would have been worth billions of dollars.

Lady Gaga’s dog walker, Ryan Fischer, has been hospitalized after he was shot while walking the singer’s bulldogs in Los Angeles, according to reports.

Police told the Daily Mail on Thursday, February 25, that the 30-year-old was shot in the chest four times by two men wearing baseball caps in West Hollywood on Wednesday, February 24. The men have also been accused of stealing two of Gaga’s three French bulldogs — Koji and Gustavo. The third pup, Miss Asia, was recovered by police.

The outlet reports that Fischer was conscious when officers responded to the scene, but he was subsequently rushed to the hospital as he was struggling to breathe. According to TMZ, Gaga, 34, is offering a $500,000 reward to anyone who can return Koji and Gustavo.

VOLUSIA, Fla (WZTV) — Body camera video shows the moment a Florida deputy rescued a missing teen from a motel room where she was found with a 22-year-old man she met online.

The Volusia Sheriff's Office released the tense video on Monday showing Deputy Royce James visiting motels & working with staff to find the 13-year-old girl who disappeared after school.

Her grandmother had called the police telling them she never came home & had missed her basketball game. Following leads, Deputy James was told by a friend of the teen the girl intended to go to a motel with someone she had met online from Orlando & that he was to pick her up at a Dollar General store.

After reviewing video from the store, Deputy James was able to identify the teen & then started hitting local motels.

His efforts paid off when he was able to identify the man she was suspected to be with at an Edgewater motel inside a "dark motel room" according to the department.

The department states the girl ran into the deputy's arms & hugged him upon his arrival, the deputy instructing the man to sit down after realizing he had found the suspect. The suspect has been identified as Tyler Thompson, Thompson arrested & charged with interference with child custody & using a computer to lure a child.

Additional charges could be forthcoming & Thompson was released after posting $15,000 bail.

The Hudson County corrections officer charged in the shooting deaths of his girlfriend & her best friend in Newark confessed the killings to a police officer before he was arrested.

John Menendez, 23, of West New York, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths Tuesday night of his girlfriend Anna Shpilberg & her best friend Luiza Shinkarevskaya, both 40 & Morris County residents. The women were found fatally shot in the head in different parts of Newark. They had just returned home from a trip & Menendez picked them up at Newark airport.

Shpilberg was found dead in the passenger seat of her car near Bruen Street & Edison Place near Newark Penn Station. Menendez, who had blood on him, walked up to a city police officer sitting in his patrol car near the scene, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

“I killed both of them. Just arrest me, bro,” Menendez allegedly told the officer. When the officer read Menendez his rights & handcuffed him, the suspect made further admissions, according to the affidavit.

“This is crazy. I can’t believe I did this,” Menendez told the officer.

In a recorded interview, Menendez told detectives he was angry that Shpilberg had gone on vacation without him, according to the affidavit.

“Both women had just been on vacation & Menendez said that Anna had been ignoring his calls,” police wrote in court records. “He said he lost it & killed them.”

CHICKASHA, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma man who had been released early from prison in January as part of a mass commutation effort is now accused of three killings, including the death of a neighbor whose heart he cut out, authorities said.

A judge denied bail Tuesday for Lawrence Paul Anderson, who faces three counts of first-degree murder, one count of assault & one count of maiming for the attack this month in Chickasha, about 35 miles southwest of Oklahoma City.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Anderson is accused of killing Andrea Lynn Blankenship, 41, & cutting out her heart. Authorities say Anderson brought the heart to his aunt & uncle’s house, cooked it with potatoes and tried to serve it to them before killing Leon Pye, 67, wounding the aunt & killing Kaeos Yates, the pair’s 4-year-old granddaughter.

Anderson sobbed in court during an initial court appearance Tuesday, The Oklahoman reported.

“I don’t want no bail, your honor. I don’t want no bail,” he said.

Anderson’s attorney, Al Hoch, indicated that he will seek a mental evaluation to determine whether Anderson is competent to stand trial.

Anderson had been sentenced in 2017 to 20 years in prison for probation violations on a drug case, the newspaper reported. Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt commuted the sentence last year to nine years in prison, & Anderson was released after serving a little more than three years.

Grady County District Attorney Jason Hicks criticized the criminal justice reform that led to the commutations of hundreds of Oklahoma inmates.

“It is time that we do better,” Hicks said. “If we have the highest incarceration rate in the world, OK. We can look at our citizens and be honest with them and tell them that you’re safe. I can’t tell the people in my district today that they’re safe.”

Stitt’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Jason Nelson, Oklahoma’s interim secretary for public safety, has said that the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board recommended commutation for Anderson on a 3-1 vote.

Tiger Woods is lucky to be alive this morning following a one-car rollover crash on Tuesday near Los Angeles, but his road to recovery will be a long, arduous one.

The 45-year old golf legend was immediately transported to a hospital where he immediately underwent surgery.

Woods suffered compound fractures in his legs, a source told CNN.

A compound fracture "is an open fracture, and the bone actually protrudes from the skin -- something that would have been noticeable at the time of the injury and ... something that obviously needs to be treated very quickly," CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta said.

"Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his lower right extremity that were treated during emergency surgery," Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, said in a statement that was posted on Woods' Twitter account.

"(O)pen fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia," he added. "Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."

A statement on Woods' Twitter account said he was awake and responsive after a "long surgical procedure."

Travis Fulton, a record-holding mixed martial arts veteran, is facing federal child pornography charges.

Fulton was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday on three counts: sexual exploitation of a child, possession of child pornography and receipt of child pornography.

The federal case is being tried in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, Cedar Rapids Division. Fulton's indictment was unsealed Friday. He has a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

Fulton is facing up to 70 years in prison if convicted, according to Tony Morfitt, a spokesperson for the acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa, Sean R. Berry.

Per the charging document, Fulton attempted to get a minor under the age of 18 to "engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing visual depictions of such conduct" with a Canon PowerShot camera in or around November 2020. Fulton also knowingly possessed or attempted to possess visual depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct on a flash drive, including a depiction of a minor under 12 years old.

In addition, Fulton is being accused of receiving & attempting to receive child pornography via "interstate and foreign commerce," per the charging document. The camera and flash drive were purchased outside the state of Iowa, elevating this to an alleged federal crime.

According to the Waterloo-Cedar Rapids Courier, Fulton was already awaiting trial on willful injury & domestic assault charges stemming from a September 2019 incident.

Fulton, 43, holds the MMA record for career professional fights with 320. He is nicknamed "The Ironman" in MMA for his record number of fights going back to 1996.

The Iowa native fought twice for the UFC in 1999, going 1-1. Fulton (255-54-10, 1 NC) last fought in April 2019 on an M-1 Global card in California.

On the one year anniversary of his death, the mother of Ahmaud Arbery has filed a lawsuit, alleging there was a conspiracy to protect those responsible for her son's death.

Wanda Cooper filed the civil lawsuit Tuesday in the Southern District of Georgia against the three men charged with murder -- Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael & William Bryan -- as well as more than a dozen law enforcement officers, Glynn County, former Glynn County District Attorney Jackie Johnson & Ware County District Attorney George Barnhill.

Cooper is seeking more than $1 million in damages.

The lawsuit alleges that, following repeated trespasses by various people at a construction site, Glynn County law enforcement authorized the McMichaels, Bryan & others to act as law enforcement within the community.

It also cites a 2019 memorandum from Glynn County Manager Alan Ours which stated the Glynn County Police Department had a culture of "cronyism, outdated policies, lack of appropriate training & loss of State certification." And that there is "an ongoing culture of cover-up, failure to supervise, abuse of power & lack of accountability."

The lawsuit states that the elder McMichael once worked as an investigator for Johnson's office & she personally intervened to try to keep him on the police force after he repeatedly failed to complete state-mandated officer training.

"Johnson instructed law enforcement not to arrest her former colleague, his son or Bryan," the lawsuit states.

Johnson gave the case to neighboring Ware County. But Barnhill also had a prior relationship with Gregory McMichael.

"When this connection was discovered, Barnhill, too, was forced to recuse himself, but not before issuing a letter intended to justify the murder of Ahmaud as "perfectly legal," based on a multitude of demonstrably false statements," the lawsuit reads.

Tiger Woods was hospitalized following a bad single-car accident in L.A. County on Tuesday morning -- with officials requiring the jaws of life to free him from the vehicle.

"On February 23, 2021, at approximately 7:12 AM, LASD responded to a single vehicle roll-over traffic collision on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Ranchos Palos Verdes," officials say.

"The vehicle was traveling northbound on Hawthorne Boulevard, at Blackhorse Road, when it crashed. The vehicle sustained major damage."

"The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer, Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods," officials confirmed.

"Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries," his agent Mark Steinberg said. "He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support."

NEW YORK — Federal agents grabbed Brooklyn resident Eric Spencer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida Saturday, accusing him of a brazen Feb. 2nd robbery at the luxury Chanel store in SoHo that was caught on a cellphone camera.

“Grab everything,” Spencer, 29, allegedly yelled at three accomplices, according to the federal complaint.

The FBI-NYPD Joint Major Theft Task Force worked the case together, accusing Spencer of making off with $189,500 of high-end Chanel handbags & other accessories—& then bragging about it on social media the next day.

Spencer allegedly wrote a post in capital letters, saying he had so many items that he could “OPEN A SMALL BOUTIQUE.”

The FBI complaint said when a security guard approached Spencer during the initial chaos inside the store, Spencer barked, “What are you going to do? Shoot me?”

He allegedly continued by warning store staff & instructing his crew, “Nobody touch me! Get everything! Grab everything!”

FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney, Jr. said, “We allege Mr. Spencer was part of a robbery crew, and in this instance, he carried a firearm during a violent takeover of a retail store. Mr. Spencer’s alleged actions violated federal law, and he is now in our custody.”

Spencer faces a maximum of 20 years in prison if he’s convicted on the robbery charge.
