SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WSBT/WKRC) - A missing persons case turned into a homicide investigation in South Bend.
“Somebody knows, absolutely 100%, somebody knows. Matter of fact, I would bet my life that more than one person knows what happened,” said South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski.
Alexis Morales and her five-month-old son, Messiah, were found inside a silver SUV in an alley on Monday night. Messiah was found alive. Police wouldn’t share the specifics about his condition, but the chief believes he’s stable.
A child being found in the same car as his dead mother is part of what makes this so horrific.
Alexis and Messiah were last seen April 12 at a park in South Bend. A Silver Alert wasn't issued until April 18.
Officers said a Silver Alert may not have been put out sooner for Alexis because she didn't have a medical condition or mental disorder. An AMBER Alert wasn't issued for Messiah because he was believed to be with his mother.
Police wouldn't discuss when or how Alexis died but say her injuries made it clear it was a homicide. The officers on scene were glad to find Messiah alive.
“When the officers arrived on scene, when they reached in and they found him alive. They immediately scooped him up, cared for him, gave him love, and got him to the hospital,” said Capt. Jason Biggs of the South Bend Police Department.
Chief Ruszkowski said detectives are questioning several people as suspects and witnesses. They're working to put together a timeline to paint a clearer picture of how Alexis died. But the chief has made it clear: they are not leaving any stone unturned.
The autopsy on Alexis is scheduled for Friday.

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – A video obtained by TMZ Sports shows former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson repeatedly punching a man in the face while on a plane leaving San Francisco International Airport.
TMZ is reporting that Tyson began hitting the man seated behind him on a flight to Florida when the passenger began to bother him. The man was intoxicated, according to media reports.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Tyson had been in San Francisco for 4/20 festivities, as KRON4 previously reported. He said he’d be “live and smoking” at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park to promote a new social media app, according to a press release.
KRON4 has reached out to the San Francisco Police Department, which is in charge of law enforcement at the airport, but has not heard back. The airport declined to comment, referring KRON4 to Jet Blue, which did not immediately respond.
Tyson once famously bit off part of boxer Evander Holyfield’s ear.

The mother of a 3-year-old who was fatally shot last month is now facing a manslaughter charge related to the boy's death.
Dallas Police said on March 28, 26-year-old Lacravivonne Washington showed up at Medical City Dallas with her son, Jalexus, saying he'd been shot in a road rage incident. The child, who had been shot in the face, did not survive his injuries.
According to the arrest report, Washington initially told investigators that 20 minutes before the shooting, she and her three young children – 2-year-old Layla Washington, 4-year-old Janiyah Washington, and Jalexus – left a donut shop. She claimed someone followed them and eventually shot at them.
But investigators told NBC 5 they found no evidence of road rage. Additionally, according to the boy's autopsy referenced in the affidavit, there was unburned gunpowder residue on the boy's body, indicating the gunshot that killed him came from close proximity and ruling out his being shot by someone in a passing vehicle.
Police said when they searched Washington’s vehicle, a handgun was found where the children could easily reach it.
Shortly after the incident, Washington was taken to the Dallas County Jail for outstanding warrants out of Carrollton related to a speeding ticket and failure to use a child safety seat. Dallas police said she was also charged with tampering with physical evidence and endangering a child related to her son's death.
At some point, she bonded out. Washington was back in police custody Wednesday morning, with jail records showing she was booked into the Dallas County Jail at 7:17 a.m.
Police also found a second gun with the boy's father, 27-year-old Jalexus Washington, Sr., and determined it was the weapon that killed the 3-year-old.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Jalexus Washington Sr. was initially arrested on a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon on March 30 and released from jail after posting a $1,500 bond. He was arrested again Wednesday on a charge of tampering with evidence and remains in the Dallas County Jail, with bail set at $25,000.
Police said both of the guns that were found were bought by Lacravivonne Washington on March 4.
Police have not said whether they think someone else shot the toddler or if he got a hold of the gun accidentally.

PANAMA CITY, FL -- A Florida teenager applied to and was accepted into 27 colleges and universities.
"It's so crazy to think about that I applied to all these colleges and I got in," Jonathan Walker said.
Walker is as well rounded as they come. In addition to being extremely smart and dedicated to his studies, he's also a staple on the school's football team.
In his free time, he invented a device that helps people who are blind and/or deaf.
"I've always loved creating devices to help people, so I definitely want to further that."
Walker's 27 schools include Ivy League institutions like Yale, Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania.
All told, his scholarship offers total more than $4 million.
Walker said all of his success is directly attributable to his family.
"I really do look up to them because like they showed me what it's like to be passionate about something," Walker said.

NEW YORK (AP) — The man wanted in the shooting of 10 people on a subway in Brooklyn was arrested Wednesday afternoon, a day after the attack on a crowded rush-hour train.
Frank R. James, 62, was taken into custody in Manhattan’s East Village neighborhood. Law enforcement located James after police received a tip about his potential whereabouts.
Police had initially said Tuesday that James was being sought for questioning because he had rented a van possibly connected to the attack, but weren’t sure whether he was responsible for the shooting. Mayor Eric Adams said in a series of media interviews Wednesday morning that investigators had upgraded James to a suspect, but did not offer details beyond citing “new information that became available to the team.”
In recent months, James had railed in online videos about racism and violence in the U.S. and about his experiences with mental health care in New York City. In some videos, he criticized Adams’ policies on mental health and subway safety.
The gunman set off smoke grenades in a crowded subway car and then fired at least 33 shots with a 9 mm handgun, police said. Five gunshot victims were in critical condition but all 10 wounded in the shooting were expected to survive. At least a dozen others who escaped gunshot wounds were treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries.
The shooter escaped in the chaos, but left behind numerous clues, including the gun, ammunition magazines, a hatchet, smoke grenades, gasoline and the key to a U-Haul van.
Federal investigators determined the gun used in the shooting was purchased by James at a pawn shop — a licensed firearms dealer — in the Columbus, Ohio, area in 2011.
Investigators believe James drove up from Philadelphia on Monday & have reviewed surveillance video showing a man matching his physical description coming out of the van early Tuesday morning, the official said. Other video shows James entering a subway station in Brooklyn with a large bag.
In addition to analyzing financial & telephone records connected to James, investigators were reviewing hours of rambling, profanity-filled videos James posted on YouTube and other social media platforms as they tried to discern a motive.
In one video, posted a day before the attack, James, who is Black, criticizes crime against Black people & says drastic action is needed.
“You got kids going in here now taking machine guns and mowing down innocent people,” James says. “It’s not going to get better until we make it better,” he said, adding that he thought things would only change if certain people were “stomped, kicked & tortured” out of their “comfort zone.”
In another video he says, “this nation was born in violence, it’s kept alive by violence or the threat thereof and it’s going to die a violent death. There’s nothing going to stop that.”
His posts are replete with violent language & bigoted comments, some against Black people.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Officials with the Baton Rouge Police Department are investigating a shooting that took the life of a toddler late Tuesday, April 12.
Police said Devin Page Jr., 3, was hit by a stray bullet while lying in bed. Investigators added he died at the scene.
A spokesman with BRPD said the shooting happened on Fairfields Avenue near North Foster Drive just after 11:00 p.m.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Mayor Sharon Weston Broome is calling for peace following the tragedy. She issued the following statement:
“The tragic overnight killing of a young child on Fairfields Avenue is a sad reminder that our community has a long way to go in addressing gun violence. This tragedy is beyond unacceptable. Someone in our community knows who is responsible and they must come forward. At this moment our community needs to refocus. Beginning Good Friday I am calling for a Week of Peace. Week over week community members join together in planning activities of hope, but there is a small percentage that still continue to choose violence. I implore individuals to settle their disputes with words rather than with violence. The outcomes from choosing violence are never hopeful. Choose hope and choose peace.”
