MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian court on Tuesday rejected an appeal by U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner of her 9-year prison sentence for drug possession, a step that could move her closer to a possible high-stakes prisoner swap between Moscow & Washington.
The 8-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury & a 2-time Olympic gold medalist was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.
Griner’s arrest in February came at a time of heightened tensions between Moscow & Washington, just days before Russia sent troops into Ukraine. At the time, Griner was returning to play for a Russian team during the WNBA’s offseason.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the decision “another failure of justice, compounding the injustice of her detention,” adding that “securing her release is our priority.”
Before her conviction, the U.S. State Department declared Griner to be “wrongfully detained” — a charge that Russia has sharply rejected.
U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in a statement that U.S. President Joe Biden “is willing to go to extraordinary lengths & make tough decisions to bring Americans home.”
Blinken didn’t elaborate, but news organizations have reported that Washington has offered to exchange Griner along with Paul Whelan, an American serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage, Viktor Bout. A Russian arms dealer who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. & once earned the nickname the “merchant of death.”
Adidas has ended its partnership with the rapper formerly known as Kanye West over his offensive and anti-semitic remarks, the latest company to cut ties with Ye & a decision that the German sportwear company said would hit its bottom line.
"Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism & any other sort of hate speech," the company said in a statement Tuesday. "Ye's recent comments & actions have been unacceptable, hateful & dangerous & they violate the company's values of diversity & inclusion, mutual respect & fairness."
Adidas said that it conducted a "thorough review" & would immediately stop production of its line of Yeezy products and stop payments to Ye and his companies. The sportswear company said it was expected to take a hit of up to $246 million to its net income this year from the move. The company is the sole owner of the design rights to Yeezy products.
Adidas is just the latest company to end connections with Ye, who also has been suspended from Twitter & Instagram over anti-semitic posts.
Earlier this month, Ye tweeted a threat that he would go "death [sic] con 3" on Jewish people, alluding to a defense readiness designation used by the U.S. military. He also posted a screenshot of a text exchange with Sean "Diddy" Combs in which he suggested Combs was being controlled by Jews.
West recently suggested slavery was a choice and called the COVID-19 vaccine the "mark of the beast," among other controversial comments. He was also criticized for wearing a "White Lives Matter" T-shirt to his Yeezy collection show in Paris. The phrase has been adopted & promoted by white supremacist groups & sympathizers, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
WAVERLY, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio man convicted of shooting 5 of 8 family members killed in 2016 testified against his older brother, George Wagner IV, in exchange for being spared the death penalty.
George faces the death penalty if he’s convicted in the slayings of the Rhoden family.
Jake & George’s mother, Angela Wagner, also has pleaded guilty to helping plan the slayings & is expected to testify. Jake & George’s father, George “Billy” Wagner III, has pleaded not guilty.
The 2 families had been close for years, but the Wagners became obsessed with gaining control over the child that Jake Wagner had with Hanna Rhoden, 19.
Hanna vowed in a Facebook message sent 4 months before the massacre that “they will have to kill me first.”
Jake Wagner testified that Hanna's comment was his “tipping point” when he decided she had to die.
George Wagner was with his brother & his father when they drove to 3 separate locations where all 8 victims were killed, went inside with the pair & helped his brother move 2 of the bodies.
Those killed were 40-year-old Christopher Rhoden Sr.; his ex-wife, 37-year-old Dana Rhoden; their 3 children, 20-year-old Clarence “Frankie” Rhoden, 16-year-old Christopher Jr. & Hanna; Clarence Rhoden’s fiancee, 20-year-old Hannah Gilley; Christopher Rhoden Sr.’s brother, 44-year-old Kenneth Rhoden; & a cousin, 38-year-old Gary Rhoden.
In late 2021 Pharaoh Don Records CEO, The Musalini, and Trust Comes First boss 38 Spesh, linked for a Bandcamp exclusive album titled "In God We Trust." Entirely produced by Spesh.
MARION COUNTY, Fla. (Fox4) - The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says a 14-year-old student at Lake Weir Middle School broke into her grandparents’ safe & stole about $13,500 in cash – half her grandmother’s life savings left over after she’d sold her house. Then, the sheriff’s office says the girl started handing the cash out to people at school.
The girl accused of stealing the money told deputies a friend who’d moved away gave it to her to hand out. Students who accepted the money told deputies the girl claimed it was her grandmother’s money & she had permission to give it away.
Some students didn’t buy that story & reported it to administrators and the school resource officer.
The young girl is now facing felony charges for grand theft. She was arrested Friday morning & given a $2,000 bond.
Deputies and officials at the school are trying to get the money back. They found around $2,500 left in the teenager's backpack. One student handed in $200 & at least 1 other brought $500 back to the front office. The Sheriff's Office and school officials are asking parents to check with their kids to see if they received any of the stolen money.

LUBBOCK, Texas — Thomas John Boukamp, 22, was sentenced to life in prison in federal prison Thursday for cyberstalking & kidnapping a 14-year-old Lubbock girl in 2020.
The minimum sentence Boukamp faced was 15 years & the maximum was life.
Boukamp was convicted of 16 charges in June. Boukamp represented himself at trial after he was allowed to fire his lawyers in May.
However, for his sentencing, Boukamp had an appointed defense attorney.
During the sentencing hearing, Boukamp’s father, older brother & sister spoke.
All 3 expressed how sorry they were for any & all pain that Boukamp caused to the victim – identified only as Jane Doe & her family.
The family said after Boukamp was arrested, he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They explained they believe that his diagnosis explained his actions.
During the trial, it was revealed that Boukamp began talking to the victim – identified only as Jane Doe – when she was 13. In November 2020, he took her to his house in Michigan.
Doe testified during trial that Boukamp sexually assaulted her several times a day in Michigan and forcibly removed her braces with pliers.
The federal judge presiding over the case denied Boukamp’s motion for a new trial on Thursday.
As the federal judge gave Boukamp his sentence, he told him that he had never had someone in his court with such a high offense level.
If Boukamp were released, he would be under court supervision for life.

Kanye West has just had 1 of his most important relationships in the fashion world ended ... Balenciaga has reportedly cut ties with Ye.
According to Women's Wear Daily, Kering, the French fashion house parent company to Balenciaga has released a statement saying, "Balenciaga has no longer any relationship nor any plans for future projects related to this artist."
While the statement did not expand further, you have to imagine the decision was made after Kanye's repeated anti-Semitic attacks & controversies over the past few months.
Kanye & Balenciaga have a long history & most recently partnered for a Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga collection that sold like wildfire.
Kanye also opened Balenciaga's Paris Fashion Week show, walking the runway & generating a ton of attention for the brand.
Of course, Kanye still has a multi-billion-dollar deal with Adidas -- a partnership the brand has reportedly said was "under review."
