EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. (AP) — A 76-year-old Minnesota man is facing criminal charges because he was shooting at a squirrel and a bullet went through a child’s bedroom window in a neighboring home.
East Grand Forks Police said they arrested the man Sunday after his neighbor reported some bullet holes in the siding of their home and a hole in the window of their son’s bedroom.
The man told officers he had been watching ball games on television and noticed a squirrel on his bird feeder, according to police. He told officers he shot a .22-caliber rifle from his bedroom window at the squirrel and believed he hit the animal.
He told officers he had shot at squirrels at least six times over the past two years because he considered it “war” when they got into his bird feeder.
The man’s wife said to him, “Well, I told you” as he was being arrested, police said.
The man is charged with recklessly handling a dangerous weapon, a misdemeanor, and a felony count of discharging a firearm within a municipality. He faces up to two years in prison and a $5,000 fine for the felony charge.

Authorities said an Iowa couple drowned their newborn in a bathtub shortly after she was born, fearing her cries would draw the attention of police. They’re charged with first-degree murder, even though the baby’s remains have not been found in weeks of searching.
Brandon D. Thoma, 31, & Taylor K. Blaha, 24, both of Fort Dodge, were charged Wednesday in the presumed death of the infant & Thoma also was charged with a felony count of abusing a corpse.
Webster County Sheriff’s Detective Amy Stringer said police received a call on Nov. 22 from a caseworker who said Blaha had shown up at a Fort Dodge hospital saying she had given birth days earlier at the apartment she shared with Thoma, the father of the baby & of Blaha’s 2-year-old child.
In a subsequent interview with Stringer, Blaha said she had discovered in April that she was pregnant & that she gave birth on Nov. 16 in the apartment bathroom after Thoma gave her methamphetamine to deal with the pain.
Blaha confirmed that the baby was born alive & said she & Thoma agreed to name the baby Kayleen Lee.
Blaha said they planned to give the baby to Blaha’s sister to adopt, but grew fearful her cries would draw the attention of neighbors & police, so they held the baby underwater in the bathtub until she drowned. Thoma then placed the baby’s body in a plastic storage container, wrapped the container in trash bags & carried it out of the apartment in a backpack.
Stringer said she also questioned Thoma, who admitted to drowning the baby, saying he feared police would discover meth in her system & take their 2-year-old child from them.
A text messages between Blaha & Thoma indicated he dumped the baby’s body in a wooded area, but a search there turned up nothing.
Both were ordered held Thursday on bonds of $1 million, with preliminary hearings set for Dec. 15.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans Police Department employee who was moonlighting as an Uber driver was stabbed to death by a passenger in what a sheriff said was a random act of deadly violence.
Yolanda Dillion, 54, was a fiscal analyst with the police department, New Orleans police chief Shaun Ferguson said Friday. She was stabbed multiple times Thursday afternoon in her car in the parking lot of a hotel in neighboring Jefferson Parish. She died later at a hospital.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto said detectives worked with Uber to determine the identity of her passenger, who had been picked up in New Orleans. They found him staying at the hotel.
Lopinto said Brandon Jacobs, 29, of Harvey, admitted to the killing.
“He stated that he woke up yesterday morning & decided he was going to kill someone,” Lopinto said.
Jacobs is being held without bond on a second-degree murder charge.
The sheriff said Jacobs posted video of the aftermath of the stabbing on social media & authorities worked with Facebook to have it taken down.
“We asked him specifically, ‘How did you pick her?’ His response was, ‘I didn’t pick her, Uber picked her.’ Meaning that she was the random person that picked him up that day,” Lopinto said.

"Don't make a wrong move," the officer said as he pinned the struggling subject to the ground. "Period."
The officer tightened the handcuffs around the subject's thin wrists.
"Ow, ow, ow, it really hurts," the subject exclaimed.
The officer pressed his weight into the subject's small body while school staff watched it all unfold. The person he was restraining was 7 years old.
"If you, my friend, are not acquainted with the juvenile justice system, you will be very shortly," the officer told the child.
Earlier that day, the child allegedly spit at a teacher. Now, he was in handcuffs & a police officer was saying he could end up in jail.
That child — a 2nd grader with autism at a North Carolina school — was ultimately pinned on the floor for 38 minutes. At one point the officer put his knee in the child's back.
In 2018, a 10-year-old with autism was pinned face down and cuffed in Denton, Texas.
Another boy with autism, just 11 years old, was handcuffed & dragged out of school & forced into a sheriff's deputy's car in Colorado in 2021.
That same year, officers handcuffed & screamed at a 5-year-old who had wandered away from school.
More than 700 children were arrested in U.S. elementary schools during the 2017-2018 school year alone.
Children with documented disabilities were 4 times more likely to be arrested at school.
Black students are even more disproportionately affected. They made up nearly half of all arrests at elementary schools. But they accounted for just 15% of the student population in those schools.
Anyone working with children with disabilities must understand how to respond when a child with an emotional or behavioral disorder acts out, according to Dr. Sonya Mathies-Dinizulu.
In a crisis, children need someone to "be there to help the kid start to de-escalate & help soothe," she said.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (11Alive) — A contentious divorce case led to homicide and arson at the law offices of one of the divorce attorneys late Wednesday afternoon, according to court documents and police files.
Popular, beloved Lawrenceville Attorney Doug Lewis was shot inside his own law offices, and his offices were set on fire.
It turns out one of Lewis's clients was a woman who had filed for divorce early last year, and police said it was the woman’s husband who went after Lewis Wednesday.
Lewis’s law offices, in an old, converted house along Stone Mountain Street in Lawrenceville, were set on fire and severely damaged at about 5:00 p.m. Wednesday. Then, inside, firefighters found Lewis’s body.
“It’s pretty brazen. It’s kind of out of the blue," Lawrenceville Police Lt. Jake Parker said Thursday.
Lt. Parker said Lewis was in his law offices by himself when a man named Allen Tayeh walked in and shot Lewis. Then, Parker said, investigators believe Tayeh poured gasoline inside the offices and started the fire.
Tayeh is initially being charged with two felonies, malice murder and arson.

Tom Pasquarello’s phone started buzzing around 7 a.m. on Thursday.
“Did you hear the news?” a friend asked.
“What news?” Pasquarello responded.
The news turned out to be the undoing of one of Pasquarello’s proudest achievements from his tenure as a regional director with the Drug Enforcement Administration. The U.S. had released the notorious Russian arms trafficker who Pasquarello helped take down 14 years ago.
Viktor Bout, the so-called “Merchant of Death” is who Russia received back from the U.S. on Thursday in a prisoner swap for WNBA star Brittney Griner. Bout, 55, was serving a 25-year sentence in an Illinois federal prison on charges of providing weapons to terrorists & conspiring to kill Americans.
“I’m kind of in disbelief that someone with the potential to orchestrate arms deals that can kill Americans anywhere in the world would be traded for a prisoner,” Pasquarello said. “I think this sends a terrible message that the U.S. will negotiate, that the U.S. will make concessions & that, if an American is held overseas, there’s always the potential that the U.S. will acquiesce to the demands of people like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin & bail them out.”
The U.S. alleges Bout smuggled military-grade weapons to rogue leaders & insurgent groups across Africa & beyond, elevating conflicts from machetes & one-shot rifles to grenade launchers & AK-47s. Russia alleges Griner flew into Moscow on Feb. 17 with vape cartridges containing less than 1 ounce of cannabis oil in her luggage.
Yuval Weber, an expert on Russian military & political strategy said Bout’s release may “incentivize rogue state & non-state actors to kidnap or imprison on trumped-up charges more Americans.” Weber also expressed concern that Bout might reprise his former role as an operative who exported arms to Russian allies at the Kremlin’s bidding.
