BARRON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin man suspected of abducting a 13-year-old girl made up his mind to take the teen when he spotted her getting on a school bus, and he made two aborted trips to her family’s home before finally carrying out an attack in which he killed Jayme Closs’ mother in front of her, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday.
Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, told investigators he was driving to his job at a cheese factory one day when he stopped behind a school bus and watched Jayme get on. At that moment, he said, “he knew that was the girl he was going to take,” the complaint said. Police have said the two did not know each other.
Prosecutors charged Patterson on Monday with kidnapping Jayme and killing her parents Oct. 15 near Barron, about 90 miles northeast of Minneapolis. He was also charged with a count of armed robbery and was scheduled to make his first court appearance later in the day.
Investigators believe Patterson hid Jayme in a remote cabin before she escaped on Thursday.
The criminal complaint said Patterson had gone to the home twice intending to kidnap Jayme, but broke off one attempt because too many cars were in the driveway and called off another because the house was too active.
On the night she was abducted, Jayme told police, she was asleep in her room when the family dog started barking. She woke her parents as a car came up the driveway.
She and her mother, Denise, hid in the bathroom, clutching each other in the bathtub with the shower curtain pulled shut. Her father, James, went to the front door. They heard a gunshot, and Jayme knew that James had just been killed, according to the complaint.
Denise Closs started to call 911. Patterson broke down the bathroom door. Jayme said he was dressed in black, wearing a face mask and gloves and carrying a shotgun.
Patterson told her mother to hang up and ordered her to tape Jayme’s mouth shut. Patterson told detectives that Denise Closs struggled with the tape so he wrapped the tape himself around Jayme’s mouth and head. He then taped her hands behind her back and taped her ankles together, pulled her out of the bathtub and shot her mother in the head.
He dragged Jayme outside, nearly slipping in blood pooled on the floor. He threw her in the trunk and drove off, pausing to yield to three squad cars speeding toward the house with flashing lights.
Patterson took her to a cabin that he said was his, ordered her into a bedroom and told her to take off her clothes and get dressed in his sister’s pajamas. He then threw her clothes into a fireplace in the cabin’s basement.
Whenever he had friends over, he made clear that no one could know she was there or “bad things could happen to her,” so she had to hide under the bed. He sealed her under the bed with tote boxes and weights so she could not crawl out, according to the complaint. She had to stay under the bed whenever he left the house, sometimes going for hours without food, water or bathroom breaks.
Patterson told investigators that he kept Jayme under the bed when his father often visited him on Saturdays, turning up the radio in his room to cover any noise she might make.
He said he assumed he had gotten away with the slayings and kidnappings after the first two weeks went by. He told detectives that on the night he kidnapped her he put stolen license plates on his car, disabled the dome light and removed an anti-kidnapping release cord from his trunk. He also shaved his head so he would not leave any hair behind and chose his father’s Mossberg shotgun because he thought it was a common model that would be hard to trace.
Patterson, who has no criminal history in Wisconsin, was described by people who knew him as a quiet and good student who participated in quiz bowl in high school. He wrote in his high school yearbook of wanting to join the Marines. On Monday, a spokeswoman for the Marines said Patterson lasted just a little more than month before washing out in October 2015.
The spokeswoman, Yvonne Carlock, said by email that Patterson’s early discharge indicated “the character of his service was incongruent with Marine Corps’ expectations and standards.”
The criminal complaint says Patterson told detectives he worked at the Saputo Cheese Factory near Almena for just two days before quitting. The company did not immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press.
Patterson’s defense attorneys, Charles Glynn and Richard Jones, said they believe Patterson can get a fair trial, but they are not sure where.
“It’s been an emotional time for this community and a difficult time for this community. We don’t take that lightly. But we have a job to do in protecting our client,” Jones said.
Police collected more than 3,500 tips following Jayme’s disappearance, but no hard leads emerged.
Then on Thursday, a woman walking her dog spotted Jayme along a road near Gordon, a town about an hour’s drive north of Barron. The woman said the girl begged her for help, saying Patterson had been hiding her in a nearby cabin and that she had escaped when he left her alone.
Neighbors called 911, and officers arrested Patterson within minutes.
The New York Post published photos of the cabin Monday. The images showed a shabby living area with a couch, refrigerator, an old television set and an unfinished ceiling. Exterior photographs show a lean-to loaded with firewood, a three-car garage and an empty box of adult female diapers in a trash can. A sign over the cabin’s front door reads “Patterson’s Retreat.”
Authorities have not said whether Jayme was sexually assaulted. The complaint does not charge Patterson with any form of sexual assault. The narrative in the document does not say what Patterson did with her.
Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said he met Jayme for the first time Sunday, and that she had an “awesome” smile on her face. He said she showed him her room at her aunt’s home in Barron.
“It was a moment I’ll never forget,” he said.

NBC Miami -- A Florida substitute teacher accused of spreading human feces on tables and grills at a park where a principal was set to host a birthday party told deputies she was "displeased" with how the principal was handling a professional issue.
News outlets report that a Sarasota County Sheriff's Office report says Phillippi Shores Elementary School substitute teacher Heather Carpenter told deputies she spread the feces Dec. 1 to disrupt the birthday party Principal Allison Foster had planned for her daughter.
Damage to the park totaled more than $2,300, including grills and tables that had to be replaced.
Forty-two-year-old Carpenter was charged with damaging property and criminal mischief. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports Carpenter didn't respond to a request for comment Monday.
Carpenter is pleading not guilty, according to court documents.

(Yahoo) -- A substitute teacher at a school in Sarasota, Fla. is under investigation for smearing human feces all over the picnic tables and grills at a local park last month. The vandalism is thought to have been an act of revenge against the school’s principal, whose daughter’s birthday party was set to take place at the outdoor venue.
Heather Carpenter is accused of causing more than $2,300 in damages when she showed up at the pavilion in Urfer Park on Dec. 1 to contaminate the picnic area, according to Florida’s Fox 13 News. An eyewitness named Mike Hutchinson happened to notice that Carpenter appeared to be wiping down the tables at 6:30 a.m. — but as he moved closer, he detected a foul odor and soon realized the woman in a surgical mask and blue rubber gloves was up to no good.
“When I walked back over here to see what was going on, the smell hit me,” Hutchinson told the local news station of the incident. “And I noticed she wiped it on every table. It was on the ground. It was a mixture of urine and feces, and she had it in a big cup, and was just pouring it out and wiping it in.”
He said Carpenter fled as soon as she realized she was busted and added that he was “shocked and appalled” at the mess she left behind.
Within a few days, the Sarasota County Police Department was able to track down and arrest Carpenter, whose van matched the description given by other eyewitnesses at the park. Once apprehended on Dec. 7, the teacher admitted to intentionally spreading the feces in order to be a party pooper — literally.
She explained to investigators that she was embroiled in a dispute with the principal at Phillippi Shores, where she had been a substitute teacher. The principal, Dr. Allison S. Foster, had reportedly invited all of the students in her 7-year-old’s class, including Carpenter’s child, according to Fox 13. So when Carpenter grew unhappy with Foster, she apparently decided to play dirty.
It cost Sarasota County $2,310 to clean up the pavilion and replace the grills and the wooden picnic tables. But it was the children who truly paid the price, as the party had to be canceled and rescheduled.
It seems like something a 12-year-old might do, not an adult,” parent Roy Baldwin said to WFLA, an NBC affiliate. “She should be stuck cleaning bathrooms for a while. Give her a chance to get up close and personal.”
Yahoo Lifestyle reached out to the Sarasota County School District, but has not heard back. A spokesperson for the district did tell WFLA that Carpenter is no longer a teacher at Phillippi Shores Elementary School, and she cannot teach or volunteer while an active investigation is underway.
Carpenter has been charged with third-degree felony mischief and property damage, according to WWSB, an ABC affiliate.

BARRON, Wis. (AP) - A 21-year-old man is jailed in the deaths of a Wisconsin couple he killed because he wanted to kidnap their teenage daughter, investigators said Friday, a day after the girl approached a stranger along a rural road saying she’d been abducted in October and held against her will.
Jake Thomas Patterson was taken into custody shortly after 13-year-old Jayme Closs sought help from a woman walking her dog in a rural, heavily wooded neighborhood near the small town of Gordon, about 60 miles (96.5 kilometers) north of Barron. Jayme disappeared from her family’s home near Barron after her parents were killed Oct. 15.
Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said during a news conference Friday that Jayme was taken against her will. He said investigators believe Patterson killed Jayme’s parents because he wanted to abduct her, and that Patterson “planned his actions and took many steps to hide his identity.”
Fitzgerald said investigators believe the girl was “the only target” and don’t believe Patterson had any contact with the family. Douglas County Sheriff Thomas Dalbec said Patterson was jailed on kidnapping and homicide charges.
The woman who first spotted Jayme on Thursday, Jeanne Nutter, said she was walking her dog along a rural road when a disheveled teenage girl called out to her for help and quickly grabbed her. Only then did Jayme reveal her name.
