HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Family members of a father of five who was shot to death on Friday said he was hoping to talk to a teen's parents about his daughter being bullied on social media when he was killed.
Brandon Curtis, 35, was shot more than once in the 10900 block of Spring Brook Pass in the Humble area. The shooter claimed self-defense.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it happened after Curtis took his daughter to fight other teens. However, Curtis' wife and sisters dispute that claim.
"I don't feel like it's right to let that come out like that. I'm angry. I'm angry about it," said Curtis' wife, Shantal Harris. "I know my husband. My husband is not like that."
"My brother would never put a hand on a child," said Curtis' sister, Jeran Perkins. "We want justice."
Harris said her 15-year-old daughter has been bullied on social media by the same teen boy for nine months. She shared some of the profanity-laced messages with ABC13 on Monday.
A few months ago, Harris said she and her husband spoke with the boy's father about it. She said Friday evening, her husband, daughter and son left to address the issue again.
"When he left from here, my husband went to go resolve the issue. He wanted to go speak to the parent," explained Harris.
However, Curtis never came home. Once outside the teen's house, the confrontation turned violent. Investigators said a 20-year-old man told them Curtis hit his teen brother.
The man got a gun to protect his brother and shot Curtis, authorities said. He died at the scene.
The man was not charged and the case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury, according to the sheriff's office.
Over the weekend, Harris said her daughter received a message that read, "we all had a fight and killed dey (sic) daddy."
"They think it's a joke," said Robinique Miles, Curtis' sister.
"For them to claim self- defense, it's sickening," added Harris.
Curtis' family want the man who shot him charged.
Curtis, a commercial truck driver, worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Now, they feel compelled to fight for him.

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – A video posted on social media shows a school resource officer at Liberty High School in Osceola County throwing a female student to the ground.
The video, which has been viewed more than 70,000 times, shows the deputy slamming the student onto the concrete walkway. Moments later, the deputy can be seen placing the student in handcuffs while a second deputy stands over them.
As the handcuffs are being placed, the student does not appear to move.
Tuesday evening, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office released a statement:
Today the sheriff’s office received information from school officials at Liberty High School about a video posted on social media depicting one of our School Resource Officers in a confrontation with a student. The incident appeared to take place between classes in the hallway. In the video, it shows the deputy taking the student to the ground and placing handcuffs on her.
Our office is in the initial stages of our investigation. We are collecting video, witness statements, and relevant information related to the incident.
We know that the School Resource Officer was in the process of trying to stop the student from fighting another student in the hallway when the deputy took her into custody. Once we receive more information related to the incident, we will provide an updated press release.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release information on the student’s condition, the school resource officer who slammed the student, or the deputy who stood over them.

Police have launched an investigation into a topless photo of Kellyanne Conway’s 16-year-old daughter, Claudia — which the teen says was posted on her mom’s Twitter & cops paid a visit to the family’s New Jersey mansion Tuesday.
Just before noon, 4 officers with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office & Alpine Police Department showed up with papers in hand at the Conways’ brick-faced home in tony Alpine & spent about an hour inside before leaving.
Alpine Police Chief Christopher Belcolle confirmed that a probe was underway.
“An investigation is being conducted. No additional information can be released,” Belcolle said, noting that records regarding juveniles are not made public.
On Monday, Claudia Conway took to her TikTok account to address a topless photo of herself that apparently was tweeted on her mother’s Twitter Fleets.
“Nobody would ever have any photo like that ever,” Claudia said in a since-deleted TikTok. “So, Kellyanne, you’re going to f–king jail.”
On Tuesday, the vocal teen apologized for publicizing the matter, saying she now believed hackers were to blame & calling on members of the public to stop contacting authorities about the matter.
Claudia has risen to social media fame for posting about her frequent clashes with her prominent parents, Kellyanne, once a top adviser to former President Donald Trump, & George, a lawyer who’s railed against Trump in the past.

Megan Thee Stallion recently sounded off about Tory Lanez allegedly shooting her, & now he wants to level the playing field & speak his mind.
A judge had ordered Lanez to keep his lips sealed about info he gets from prosecutors in his case, & also barred him from contacting Meg on social media -- but in a new court filing he says that's totally unfair.
In the docs, Lanez says it's unfair Megan is able to say whatever she wants ... while he is basically prevented from defending himself.
Lanez says he is particularly miffed about what went down last week, when erroneous reports began circulating that the charges against Tory were dropped.
Megan responded on social media, saying ... "AT THIS POINT IM GETTING ANNOYED! STOP BELIEVING EVERYTHING YOU READ ON THE MF INTERNET. Imagine how I feel waking every day seeing people LIE & turn my trauma into a joke? That whole team figures out ways to create doubt with my story every week & the media eats it up."
According to Lanez ... Megan falsely insinuated he & his legal team had something to do with the bogus reports, therefore maligning their integrity.
Megan also commented, "I can’t wait until the MF FACTS come out! Bitch you shot me & MY STORY NOT CHANGING & BITCH YOU GOING TO JAIL."
According to the docs, Lanez claims there's evidence refuting Megan's side of the story -- including "evidence of gunshot residue implicating others" -- but because of the protective order ... he's not able to disclose any of it.
Tory's also worried about optics -- in the docs he worries his silence might make it look like he's conceding what Megan says is true. So, he's asking the judge to modify the gag order against him.
As we've reported ... Megan has remained steadfast that Tory shot her in July after they left a party. Though Lanez initially seemed to issue a public apology in September by saying, "I was too drunk" ... he later denied it.

BAY HARBOR ISLANDS, FLA. (WSVN) - Newly released surveillance video offers a new view of a shootout in the parking lot of a Bay Harbor Islands condominium that, police said, involved rapper Pooh Shiesty and left two men injured.
The Oct. 9 incident featured over half a million dollars in exotic vehicles and the Memphis rapper, but what unfolded in broad daylight was no music video.
The footage shows a McLaren sports car, a Mercedes-Benz Maybach and another Mercedes pulling into the parking lot of the condo, located on East Bay Harbor drive condo parking lot.
Men inside the vehicles eventually get out and meet, but moments later a man in a white shirt, seen holding a pistol, and a man in the black sweatshirt, seen brandishing a longer gun, begin firing.
Both gunmen are then seen retreating back to the Maybach, and seconds later, the Maybach and the McLaren speed away.
One man is then seen hobbling back to the other Mercedes.
Both injured victims ended up at Aventura Hospital with injuries.
Police and prosecutors said Shiesty was the man seen in the McLaren, and he was part of the group that showed up at the parking lot that afternoon.
Investigators said the shooting took place right across the street from the Bay Harbor Islands Police Station and Town Hall.
Shiesty, whose real name is Lontrell Williams, surrendered to police days later. He was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and armed battery.
Police named another suspect in their affidavit. They said both men have since left the state in a private jet.
Detectives are using photos posted to Instagram, showing the hip-hop artist with an assault-style rifle and cash, as part of their case.
Police said the shooting happened when one of the victims tried selling high-end sneakers and marijuana.
A 7News crew spoke with Shiesty when he turned himself in.
“Pooh, they got the right guy?” the reporter asked.
Shiesty, who was later released on a $30,000 bond, declined to comment.
Shiesty’s court appearance that was scheduled for Tuesday was reset for Feb 9.

Jake Paul, the internet personality turned pro boxer, has his next fight set, and this time he'll be competing against an actual professional fighter.
Paul will face former UFC fighter Ben Askren in an eight-round pro boxing match on April 17, Triller co-founder Ryan Kavanaugh told ESPN.
The fight will take place under the Triller Fight Club banner and will serve as the main event. The location of the event, which will air on traditional pay-per-view platforms, hasn't been finalized yet.
The full card, which is expected to feature familiar names from the world of boxing, present and past, as well as other social media celebrities and MMA fighters all competing in boxing matches, will be revealed in the coming weeks.
According to Kavanaugh, the fight will be contested with 10-ounce gloves in a 20-by-20 ring. It will mark the first pro boxing match of Askren's career.
"I know Jake Paul is enjoying pretending he is a fighter," Askren said. "I think on April 17 he is going to have a rude awakening to what being a fighter is really like. Jake has led a privileged life and doesn't really know what the meaning of being a fighter is. I'm going to put his dreams to an end."
Askren, who is still under contract with the UFC, received permission from the company to take the fight, sources say.
While the weight class for the fight hasn't been finalized yet, sources say it is expected to be contested in the 185-190-pound range.
Paul, a 24-year-old who is considered one of the most popular and polarizing personalities on the internet and is the younger brother of fellow social media influencer Logan Paul, has made waves in the boxing world since his debut in January 2020. On that night, he defeated fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib, real name Ali Loui Al-Fakhri, via first-round TKO. He followed that up with a second-round knockout of former NBA player Nate Robinson in November.
Since then, Paul, who is also an actor and rapper, has had a slew of pro fighters and athletes call him out. He ultimately chose to fight Askren next.
"Ben Askren is a two-time NCAA champion, a world champion in two different global mixed martial arts organizations and has less losses on his record than Conor McGregor," Paul said.
"Me, on the other hand, I started boxing two years ago and I'm still going to knock his ass out faster than [Jorge] Masvidal. These MMA guys think because they throw punches they know how to box. The world complained because I knocked out a basketball player and not a real fighter. So now I'm giving the people what they want by taking on a 'real fighter.' After Ben Askren is added to my knockout meme collection, what can anybody say? Thank you to Triller Fight Club for giving me the platform to once again put a man to sleep. April 17, it's lights out for Askren."
Askren, 36, retired from MMA last year after announcing he needed hip replacement surgery. He had successful surgery in August.
His athletic résumé is an impressive one. Among the accomplishments: former two-time NCAA wrestling champion, a two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner, a 2008 Olympian, and a former Bellator and One Championship welterweight champion.
He started his career a perfect 19-0 (1 NC) before getting knocked out in five seconds by Masvidal in July 2019, which is the fastest knockout in UFC history. His last fight was a submission loss to Demian Maia in October 2019.
"Triller took the opportunity to allow Jake and Triller fans to have their voice be heard for who Jake should fight," Kavanaugh said. "The overwhelming vote was Askren."
This will mark the second boxing event that Triller, a video-making and social-networking app, has held. The first was co-headlined by Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. and Paul vs. Robinson in November.
