The world’s first living robots — known as “xenobots” — can now reproduce.
Details about the robots, created using the heart & skin stem cells from the African clawed frog, were unveiled last year after experiments showed they could move & self-heal.
Now, the scientists at Tufts University, the University of Vermont & Harvard who made the xenobots say the tiny blobs can also self-replicate.
The results of the new research were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday.
Experiments showed that the organisms can swim out into their dish, find other single cells and assemble “baby” xenobots.
A few days later, the babies become new xenobots that look and move just like the initial creation.
The new xenobots can then go out and self-replicate again, according to the scientists.
Xenobots, which are less than a millimeter wide, are designed on a computer and hand-assembled.
The scientists said they were stunned to learn the tiny blobs could spontaneously replicate.
“People have thought for quite a long time that we’ve worked out all the ways that life can reproduce or replicate. But this is something that’s never been observed before,” said Douglas Blackiston, who worked on the study.
“This is profound,” added Michael Levin, co-leader of the research. “These cells have the genome of a frog, but, freed from becoming tadpoles, they use their collective intelligence, a plasticity, to do something astounding.”
The team said the new research could be beneficial for advancements in regenerative medicine.
“If we knew how to tell collections of cells to do what we wanted them to do, ultimately, that’s regenerative medicine — that’s the solution to traumatic injury, birth defects, cancer, and aging,” Levin said.
“All of these different problems are here because we don’t know how to predict & control what groups of cells are going to build. Xenobots are a new platform for teaching us.”

Ye's on a mission to help the homeless population of Los Angeles, meeting with charitable organizations and coming up with strategies he believes can help to ease the growing problem in the city.
As we'd shown you ... Kanye stopped by the L.A. Mission to drop off 1,000 meals last week but turns out he also took time to meet with the people in charge. We're told during his sit-down with Reverend Troy Vaughn, CEO of L.A. Mission, Ye laid out 4 ways he believes he can help the homeless.
First, Kanye wants to create a plan to continue feeding the unhoused by establishing a working relationship with orgs across the city. He also wants to use his own companies to help provide education, jobs & housing.
Ye believes he can use his platform & Sunday Service to inspire and uplift the homeless community in L.A. in only ways his artistry has been able to do with others.
Finally, Kanye wants to partner with other groups tackling the crisis & combine their efforts with his ability to provide a bold & innovative vision for the future. Together, he believes they can eliminate the homeless situation.
As we reported, Kanye also spoke to those in attendance at the mission, saying he believes God will bring him & Kim Kardashian back together ... inspiring millions of couples in the process.
Of course, the homeless population in L.A. has only grown since the start of the pandemic, with lawmakers & citizens looking for ways to help those in need.
Just recently, an unarmed response pilot program was launched in Venice Beach to help assist law enforcement with calls, especially those that have to do with mental health.

Travis Scott's seemingly genuine gesture of wanting to cover burial costs for those killed as a result of his Astroworld Festival has been turned down by the show's youngest victim.
The family of 9-year-old Ezra Blount -- who was allegedly trampled at the concert, and later died from his injuries -- is rejecting the rapper's offer to pay for the funeral ... this according to their attorney, Bob Hilliard, who just filed suit against Scott on behalf of the Blounts.
In a letter, obtained by Rolling Stone, Hilliard writes ... "Your client’s offer is declined. I have no doubt Mr. Scott feels remorse. His journey ahead will be painful. He must face & hopefully see that he bears some of the responsibility for this tragedy."
Blount was laid to rest in a private ceremony last week ... after he was taken off life support a few weeks following the tragedy in early November. Ezra became the 10th person in the death toll, with hundreds more injured.
This rejection came in response to an olive branch extended by Travis' attorney, Daniel Petrocelli, who sent the Blounts the funeral expense offer on behalf of his client, writing ... "Travis is committed to doing his part to help the families who have suffered & begin the long process of healing in the Houston community. Toward that end, Travis would like to pay for the funeral expenses for Mr. Blount’s son."
R&B singer Tremaine Neverson — also known as Trey Songz — is being investigated after reportedly being involved in a sexual assault on the Las Vegas Strip over the weekend, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed.
The sexual assault was reported to LVMPD on Sunday and is under investigation by sex crimes detectives. It happened at a hotel in the 3700 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard, police said.
"Neverson is cooperating with the investigation," according to LVMPD.
As of Monday, no arrests had been made, police said.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Prosecutors asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the ruling that overturned Bill Cosby’s sexual assault conviction, arguing in a petition Monday that a dangerous precedent could be set if press releases are treated as immunity agreements.
Cosby’s lawyers have long argued that he relied on a promise that he would never be charged when he gave damaging testimony in an accuser’s civil suit in 2006. The admissions were later used against him in two criminal trials.
The only written evidence of such a promise is a 2005 press release from the then-prosecutor, Bruce Castor, who said he did not have enough evidence to arrest Cosby.
The release included an ambiguous “caution” that Castor “will reconsider this decision should the need arise.” The parties have since spent years debating what that meant.
“This decision as it stands will have far-reaching negative consequences beyond Montgomery County and Pennsylvania. The U.S. Supreme Court can right what we believe is a grievous wrong,” Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele wrote in the petition, which seeks a Supreme Court review under the due process clause of the U.S. Constitution.
Cosby, 84, became the first celebrity convicted of sexual assault in the #MeToo era when the jury at his 2018 retrial found him guilty of drugging and molesting college sports administrator Andrea Constand in 2004.
He spent nearly three years in prison before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court set him free in June.
Steele’s bid to revive the case is a long shot. The U.S. Supreme Court accepts fewer than 1% of the petitions it receives. Legal scholars and victim advocates will be watching closely, though, to see if the court takes an interest in a high-profile #MeToo case.

Teyana Taylor went to the hospital over the weekend ... because she says her body just gave out.
Teyana took a pic of herself in a hospital bed ... telling fans in Connecticut she was sorry for canceling at the last minute and promising a make-good at some point in the future.
It's unclear what happened, but Teyana's had a rough couple of months. Back in August, she discovered lumps in her breasts and underwent emergency surgery ... fortunately doctors gave her an all-clear.
As for the latest scare, she said, "... my body simply just gave out, which actually started a few days ago. SHUT DOWN, my body actually low key betrayed me cause ah bitch was tryna get on that sage."
She went on to caution, "But honestly you have to listen to your body and know when to sit down, or it will definitely sit you down. In the ER ... I've since got the proper fluids and nutrients put back into my body all night/morning & will take the next few off days to continue to recover."
