Alma Guerrero, left, was pushed out of harm’s way by Erinn Phelan, right, who sustained serious injuries in a New York City hit-and-run Sunday morning. The two friends are shown, above, at their graduation.

Video After The Jump

Erinn Phelan excelled in academics at Swampscott High School and at Brown University, and weeks after graduating last summer, she left New England for a dream job in New York City, working for Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s new volunteerism initiative.

Phelan came home often to visit her parents and former teachers. She planned to return next weekend to watch her alma mater compete in the Harvard Model Congress, one of the many extracurricular activities she participated in as a Swampscott High student.

But at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, as Phelan and her college roommate of three years, Alma Guerrero, crossed a street in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn, they were hit by an oncoming car. The driver didn’t stop.

As the car rushed toward them, Phelan, 22, attempted to push Guerrero, 23, out of harm’s way. Guerrero, who is enrolled in medical school at Brown, suffered a broken collarbone. But Phelan sustained a severe head injury that has left her brain dead.

Guerrero’s father told the New York Daily News Phelan pushed his daughter out of the way “to save her.”

Police are still searching for the driver of the car, an Acura Legend. According to authorities, the vehicle was found several blocks from the scene, and police believe the suspect, a young woman, fled by subway. Police are concentrating their search on Cindy Jasmin, 33, of the Bronx, who is the registered owner of the car.

Bloomberg hired Phelan as one of six coordinators for NYC Civic Corps, an initiative that supplies nonprofit agencies with volunteers and support services. He visited both women at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn Sunday night.

Yesterday morning, he spoke about Phelan, telling reporters, “this young woman is a fighter. She’s got a big heart and though she’s only been living here for a few short months, she’s a New Yorker and everyone in this city is pulling for her to get through this.’’

Her parents, John and Mary Phelan, have been holding vigil at their daughter’s room since arriving in New York hours after the incident.

In Swampscott, her grandfather, John Phelan Sr., said her act of selflessness in trying to protect her friend was not surprising. “That’s how she has always been, looking out for others,’’ he said.

The elder Phelan said his son drove to New York early Sunday immediately after receiving a call from police about what happened. “This has left the whole family grief-stricken,’’ he said. “We’re just waiting and praying.’’

In the summer after her freshman year at Brown, Erinn Phelan worked as an intern with the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

News of Phelan’s condition also sent a wave of grief through Swampscott High School, where she graduated in 2005.

Brian Salzer, the high school principal, said Phelan was close to several teachers, who considered her “more than a student, a friend.’’ Phelan returned to the school often, and her former teachers followed her career.

She was the one you knew was going to go places, because she had that great academic ability and was very service-minded,’’ he said.

Houston bred emcee Z-Ro, whose real name is Joseph Wayne McVey, is facing legal trouble for the third time after the Harris County Sheriff's Department charged the rapper for felony possession.

The self- proclaimed "King of the Ghetto" and Rap-A-Lot records MC has a trial date set for next Monday at the Harris County Courthouse from a February 2009 bust.

Police allege that McVey, 33, was in possession of a codeine mixture weighing more than 28 grams but less than 199 grams, including adulterants and dilutants.

Prior to the current charge, the rapper was charged in 2003 on another codeine charge, for which he eventually spent a couple of stints in prison after violating his probation.

This case came about two weeks after McVey was busted for misdemeanor marijuana possession and later found not guilty after taking the stand in his own defense at trial.

"The jury believed him when he said he didn't do it," Robert Jones, McVey's attorney, told the press. "He's a very honest, forthright person."

Although very honest, according to a report, another conviction could spell years behind bars.

"Right now, the penalty has been enhanced, so I would have to look that up to see what exactly that is, but I anticipate that he is going to trial because he didn't do anything, so the penalty is zero," Jones laughs.

Jones says his client is innocent of this charge. He says authorities found a bottle of pharmaceutical cough syrup in a bottle with someone else's name on the prescription in the back seat of a car in which McVey was riding.

Though set for Monday, Jones anticipates that the trial will be delayed, as he says that the D.A. has reindicted McVey for the same offense.

"They're trying to trump up the charges and make him scared so he'll take something," he says. "It is nothing more than a form of intimidation. It doesn't change the facts of the case at all."

It seems that the legal system is not playing around with rappers these days so we can only hope the best for Z-Ro. I just hope if he beats this case that he would run as far away from the “sizzurp” as possible.

Video After The Jump

Kanye West just released the video for "Coldest Winter" off his latest album '808's and Heartbreaks'

Yeezy doesn't make an appearance in the video. Instead we see a woman running through the darkness from the Grim Reaper.

Not sure what the song and video have in common, but hey it's a music video. I guess it doesn't have to make sense.

Video was directed by Nabil Elderkin

Lil Wayne may have an impending jail sentence, but in recent days some news about the MC has set the Internet chatter ablaze: Does he have another baby on the way?

The Cash Money MC has been spotted attending events and snuggling with a new artist on his Young Money label named Shanell. The Massachusetts-born/Atlanta-raised songstress (real name: Shanell Woodgett), sister of former Danity Kane member D. Woods, began as a background dancer for artists like Kandi Burress, Petey Pablo and Ne-Yo before deciding to write songs. Teaming with her high school friend and producer Bangladesh, Shanell recorded a demo tape and aimed to become an artist herself along with writing for other people. She met Wayne while serving as a back-up dancer for Ne-Yo during the Up Close and Personal Tour (which featured the rapper along with Chris Brown) and eventually passed the rapper Bangladesh's beat for "A Milli," which became a huge street hit for the Young Money leader. Soon after, Shanell joined Lil Wayne's artist enclave and began recording, touring and performing her single "Play in My Band" as well as co-writing songs for Wayne.

Now, as she preps her as-yet-untitled debut album, Shanell said the rumors about whether she's dating Lil Wayne have run rampant but have no basis in reality.

"Basically it came from a corny rumor that escalated," Shanell told MTV News. "First I was dating him, then I was his girlfriend, then we were getting married, then we were settling down and now I'm pregnant. It's so foolish we've haven't paid it any attention."

So what of the widely circulated photo where the two are hugging?

"We're taking a picture," she said.

The singer-songwriter says that the dating rumors were fine, but the pregnancy chatter was not.

"All the rest of the rumors were kinda funny except that one," she admitted. "When my mother called me like, 'Um?,' [I was] like, 'No! Are you serious?' I don't care about the rumors, but I just want people to know that I'm not pregnant. I've got an album coming out, I'm a dancer, I'm in shape and children are not anywhere in my future."

Lil Wayne agrees.

"Let me clear up this rumor, man: Shanell is not pregnant from me," Wayne said in a serious tone on a Ustream video last weekend. "Shanell isn't even pregnant! Period. Clear that up right now, man. Everybody talking about Shanell pregnant by ... No, she not even pregnant. Period."

Lil Wayne may not be the father this go round, but he saw the birth of three sons — from an unnamed Ohio native, singer Nivea Nash and actress Lauren London — between 2008 and 2009 alone. His first child's name is Reginae Carter, from his marriage to Toya Carter.

Allen Iverson is going to miss the next three games with the Philadelphia 76ers due to an undiagnosed illness of his four-year-old daughter, Messiah. He already missed two weeks earlier in the year due to the sickness. The Sixers are calling his leave "indefinite," according to the Camden Courier Post.

"At this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Sixers, Allen and his family that he be allowed to deal with a very serious issue that is far greater than the game of basketball," Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski said.

Some are thinking this could be it for Iverson and the Sixers, though. Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported yesterday that some in the organization are ready to send Iverson packing. The fact that it's never clear when Iverson is going to be in the lineup or not is starting to bug folks.

Sixers coach Eddie Jordan supposedly told his players on Sunday that Iverson might not be back.

Jennifer Lopez has parted ways with her record label, Sony’s Epic Records, as first reported by Deadline.com’s Nikki Finke (Lopez’s rep confirms the split to EW). The once-hot singer-actress had begun to stage her musical comeback late last year when she released a new single, “Louboutins,” and then fell while singing it at November’s American Music Awards. (See photo at left.) This likely means that Lopez’s seventh studio album, LOVE?, will not hit stores in April as had previously been planned.

Finke cites insiders who said that Lopez’s last two singles (“Louboutins” and “Fresh Out the Oven”) fulfilled the contract she had with Epic, and that LOVE?—said to feature production work from the Neptunes and Darkchild—was never finished. Lopez’s manager Benny Medina told Finke in a statement that “Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction her career as an actress and recording artist. She is grateful and appreciative to everyone Sony for all that they accomplished together.”

Lopez apparently isn’t walking away from her music career: Her rep tells EW that the singer is currently negotiating with another label.

Lopez is still set to host Saturday Night Live this coming weekend. Although, now it seems she doesn’t even have an album-in-the-works to pimp during the monologue. Should she possibly just pursue a talk-show gig instead? Weigh in below,

High School Star Killed By Mothers Ex Boyfriend

A high school football star who had signed to play at Vanderbilt University was shot to death early Thursday by his mother's ex-boyfriend shortly after police arrived to investigate a report of a person with a weapon, authorities said.

Officers heard four or five gunshots around 2:30 a.m. as they arrived at the home where Rajaan Bennett, 18, lived with his mother, said Powder Springs Maj. Charles Spann. Inside they found Bennett, a running back at McEachern High School who was rated among Georgia's top college football prospects, dead of a gunshot wound.

Boyd said Clifton Steger, 39, of Milledgeville shot Bennett and then killed himself. Bennett's uncle, Taiwan Hunter, 32, was wounded and underwent surgery. He was in critical condition Thursday afternoon. His mother, Narjaketha Bennett, and two other children were unharmed.

It was not clear what prompted the shooting, but Spann said there was no sign of a struggle. He also said there had been no previous reports of domestic violence at the west Georgia home.

"We are still investigating," he said. "We won't make any assumptions until we finish our investigation."

McEachern football coach Kyle Hockman said while Bennett excelled on the football field - he rushed for more than 1,800 yards and 28 touchdowns last season - he also led an exemplary life outside of sports.

"He was an All-State football player, but he was a better person," he said. "He touched the lives of thousands."

Bennett picked Vanderbilt over other schools because he felt it would help better prepare him for life after football, Hockman said. Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said in a statement that Bennett "was an extraordinary young man and an ideal fit" for his program.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his mother Narjaketha and family members," he said. "I know he meant so much to them."

Bennett, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., had an outsized reputation at McEachern, a sprawling school on the outskirts of west Atlanta that sports a football field in the middle of campus.

"We have a population of 2,200 kids, and when you're Rajaan Bennett, you touch the lives of all 2,200," said principal Regina Montgomery, who added that counselors will be on hand to help students.

More than 100 hundred students gathered at a somber candelight vigil in the pavement surrounding a park near the school, singing songs and sharing stories about Bennett. A poster sat near the middle of the vigil that read: "God only takes the best."

"He always had a smile on his face. He was definitely a leader. He was no follower," said Keyon McGhee, a 17-year-old senior. "It will be hard to get over this. Everybody knew him, even the freshmen."

Gov. Paterson has 99 problems -- and Jay-Z might be one of them.

The governor's friendship with the hip-hop impresario is raising questions because of the latter's involvement with AEG, the consortium controversially selected to run a multibillion-dollar racino at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Paterson's bond with the man born Shawn Carter was growing at the same time that Jay-Z was being courted to join the Aqueduct Entertainment Group.

Paterson tabbed AEG in late January to turn the aging track into a slick gaming venue with 4,500 video slot machines.

But the deal is under federal investigation after questions were raised about the secret selection process.

Last Aug. 31, Jay-Z and his wife, Beyoncé, shared a podium with Paterson to announce that Jay-Z would stage a 9/11 benefit concert at Madison Square Garden.

In early September, AEG Chairman Richard Mays approached Jay-Z through his business partners and asked whether he would be interested in joining the consortium -- which at the time ranked last among six bidders seeking the lucrative project.

Within days, Jay-Z had agreed to take a 7 percent stake in AEG through one of his companies, Gain Global Investments Network LLC.

Jay-Z, 40, had long been interested in the project, sources said. In spring 2009, he'd begun talking with casino mogul Steve Wynn about joining Wynn's bid to operate the racino.

No deal was hammered out, and Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts Limited, frustrated by the long review process and its murky rules, eventually bowed out.

"Paterson directly told Wynn he needed to have a minority partner, so he went and got Jay-Z. But when Wynn pulled out, Jay-Z was without a home," a source told The Post. "AEG went and grabbed Jay-Z after his deal with Steve Wynn fell through."

AEG jumped at the chance to recruit Jay-Z, who has become increasingly close to Paterson, sources said. The two dined together in June and hung out in the Hamptons.

After attending the 9/11 concert at Madison Square Garden as Jay-Z's guest, Paterson wrote to MTV: "I can personally attest to his commitment to New York and the impact he has on New Yorkers of all ages. He is most definitely deserving of the top-MC-of-2009 title."

AEG denies that it courted Jay-Z to win favor with the governor.

"Given [Jay-Z's] superstardom and his long and deep connection to New York, the partners thought he could bring a unique perspective to shaping a facility that would truly be an entertainment destination," AEG spokesman Jonathan Rosen said. "The partners were looking to bring in someone who could bring marketing and community advice to the team."

A Paterson spokeswoman added: "There is absolutely no relationship between Governor Paterson's friendship with Jay-Z and the choice of AEG."

Still. Jay-Z seems an odd fit with the group, considering that he brags in his music about having dealt drugs in his youth -- not to mention that he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and was sentenced to three years' probation for stabbing a record executive in a 1999 nightclub melee.

One member of the AEG consortium, Darryl Greene, has already been forced to drop out over his criminal past. He'd fleeced city agencies out of $500,000.

Paterson's relationship with others in the AEG consortium has also drawn criticism. Three days after the winning bid was announced this month, he met with the Rev. Floyd Flake, an AEG partner and Queens political kingmaker, in the governor's Harlem office. The two later said that they talked politics but that there was no quid pro quo.

Meanwhile, Paterson continues to pal around with Jay-Z, even lauding him last month in Esquire for supporting the administration through some rough patches.

"Jay tells me, 'I've got your back,' " the governor told the magazine.

Ashanti's Stalker Sentenced To Jail Time

ashanti-p01.jpg

The man charged with stalking R&B singer Ashanti and her family was sentenced in a New York court last Thursday (February 18). Devar Hurd was found guilty of stalking and aggravated harassment in December and will now go to jail for 2 years.Hurd insisted that his intentions where neither to "annoy nor alarm" the singer and her family with his messages."My intent was not to harm," he said to the judge. "I always wish the best for Ashanti."Hurd sent lewd texts to the singer and her mother; some of which included photos of his genitals and a picture of the family's Long Island home.Though Ashanti never appeared in court, her mother Tina Douglas testified and said that the messages were unsolicited and unwelcomed. Douglas even hired extra security and asked Hurd to leave her alone and stop sending the messages. Those pleas went ignored.Douglas responded to Hurd's sentencing through a spokesperson stated, "We're really so glad to have this behind us, and we feel justice has been served."The judge presiding over the case, Supreme Court Justice Thomas Farber, revealed that doctors had diagnosed Hurd with having a delusional disorder, however he was unable to find residence in New York, so probation with mental-health treatment was not possible. Assistant District Attorney Carolina Holderness pushed for the maximum sentence citing Hurd's actions as those not of "a man wooing a woman."Hurd has remained incarcerated since he was arrested in July 2009. His time served will count toward his 2 year sentence.YoRapFollow Me On Twitter @Chance_GunitBecome A Fan On Facebook Chance
