COLOMA, Mich. (WNDU) - A home health nurse is facing murder and drug charges after police claim she’s responsible for the death of a 3-year-old in Coloma Township.
Coloma police responded to 6209 Brecht Road around 2:30 AM on Monday.
That’s where they found the parents of an unresponsive 3-year-old performing life-saving measures on their child who was missing their breathing tube & already dealing with several medical conditions.
Police also found the woman hired to monitor the child that night in no state to help out.
“Through an investigation, the officers found out that was the registered nurse that was supposed to care for the child throughout the night. After the investigation was completed, we determined that she was high on methamphetamines & should not have been in care of that child,” said Police Chief Wes Smigielski.
That nurse is 42-year-old Judith Sobol who now faces a charge of second-degree murder & possession of meth.
She not only had meth on her person when police arrived at the scene, but she also admitted to using it.
According to the probable cause document, Sobol told police she shot up meth the same day she was scheduled to care for the victim. She also admitted to shooting up meth four days straight that same week before heading to work.
The report says she admitted she was “not in the right state of mind to be at work & should have never come to work at all.”
Police found a small container in Sobol’s purse with meth & 2 pipes inside.
Sobol is being held on a $500,000 bond at the Berrien County Jail.
Her next hearing is set for June 29th.

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) - A Paulding County mother has been arrested after two young children died & several others were injured in a house fire Friday night.
A neighbor called 911 just before 9:30 p.m. Friday after seeing smoke and flames billowing out of the windows of a home located on Woodwind Drive.
Police said 7 children were inside the home when the fire initially started.
When firefighters went inside the home, they discovered 2 young children unresponsive. Police said an infant & another child in the age range of 3-5 years old were found with burns at the top of the stairs inside the home.
A third child in the age range of 5-6 years old was flown to Grady Hospital with 75% burns. A fourth child in the age range of 7-8 years old was taken to Wellstar Cobb Hospital.
Police said 3 other kids between the ages of 14 & 16 years old jumped out of a second-floor window. One child suffered an ankle injury & the other 2 were not injured.
The mother of the children was arrested after sheriff deputies found her in the backyard of the home uninjured. Her name has not been released yet.
The incident is under investigation.

TAMPA, Fla. (Fox13) - A suspect accused of killing a man in his 70s outside a Tampa convenience store early Friday morning has been arrested.
According to the Tampa Police Department, officers were called to the 7-Eleven located at 4943 E. Busch Blvd. around 1:20 a.m. for reports of a person stomping on an unconscious man.
Once on scene, police found the victim unresponsive on the ground. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
After reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses, detectives say they identified Taron Criner, 39, as the suspect.
Shortly after 7 a.m. TPD says officers saw Criner, who appeared to be wearing the same clothing as seen in the surveillance video, walking near the roadway of E. Busch Blvd in front of the 7-Eleven. His clothing also appeared to have blood spatter on it, according to TPD.
Criner was positively identified and arrested for murder.

Prosecutors want Nicki Minaj’s husband to do serious jail time -- not home confinement -- for failing to register as a sex offender in California ... TMZ Hip Hop has learned.
According to new legal docs, federal prosecutors don't think 6 months behind bars followed by supervised release is sufficient punishment for Kenneth Petty, who pled guilty to the offense. They specifically note any home confinement ordered as part of his supervised release would be spent in a huge Calabasas home where he & Nicki live.
The feds point out it's in a "gated affluent community" & includes a pool, Nicki’s music studio & their beautifully landscaped backyard -- amenities not in line with their idea of crime & punishment.
In fact, the U.S. Attorney's Office seems to think that lap of luxury is what led Petty down the wrong path. In the docs, prosecutors say Petty kept up with his sex offender registry paperwork for nearly 20 years ... until he met Nicki in 2019 & moved to Cali. As they describe it, "Defendant began dating his wife, quit his job, moved to Los Angeles & adopted an affluent lifestyle."
Petty told the court he didn't know the specific requirements to register upon leaving NY state, but prosecutors say he was well aware of the rules after getting annual warnings for 2 decades. As we've reported ... Petty had to register as a sex offender after a 1995 attempted rape conviction in NY.
Now, federal prosecutors in CA are recommending he serve 15 months of prison time, 5 years supervised release & pay $55K in retribution. The judge will have final say when sentencing goes down July 6.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Friday’s outcome is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.
The decision, unthinkable just a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by an emboldened right side of the court that has been fortified by 3 appointees of former President Donald Trump.
The ruling came more than a month after the stunning leak of a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito indicating the court was prepared to take this momentous step.
It puts the court at odds with a majority of Americans who favored preserving Roe, according to opinion polls.
Alito, in the final opinion issued Friday, wrote that Roe & Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the 1992 decision that reaffirmed the right to abortion, were wrong the day they were decided & must be overturned.
“We therefore hold that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Roe & Casey must be overruled & the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives,” Alito wrote.
Authority to regulate abortion rests with the political branches, not the courts, Alito wrote.
Joining Alito were Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh & Amy Coney Barrett. The latter three justices are Trump appointees. Thomas first voted to overrule Roe 30 years ago.
Chief Justice John Roberts would have stopped short of ending the abortion right, noting that he would have upheld the Mississippi law at the heart of the case, a ban on abortion after 15 weeks & said no more.
Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor & Elena Kagan — the diminished liberal wing of the court — were in dissent.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,” they wrote.
The ruling is expected to disproportionately affect minority women who already face limited access to health care.
Mississippi’s only abortion clinic, which is at the center of the case, continued to see patients Friday. Outside, men used a bullhorn to tell people inside the clinic that they would burn in hell. Clinic escorts wearing colorful vests used large stereo speakers to blast Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” at the protesters.

Four months after Dave Chappelle helped block an affordable housing development in his home base of Yellow Springs, Ohio, the Yellow Springs News reports that he has purchased 19 acres of that same land.
Originally, Oberer Land Developers, Ltd. had acquired 52 acres in Yellow Springs, which is home to Antioch College & a year-round population of 3,697. Oberer came to the Village Council with a request to rezone the land, so that instead of hosting mostly single-family homes, it would become a planned unit development (PUD). Under the PUD proposition, relatively cheaper townhomes & duplexes could also be built, and Oberer would donate one acre to the village for affordable housing. It would add a total of 140 dwelling units to the community.
Chappelle vehemently opposed the PUD plan, saying in December, “I have invested millions of dollars in town. If you push this thing through, what I’m investing in is no longer applicable.” He reiterated his willingness to divest from Yellow Springs at a February public meeting, telling the assembly, “I am not bluffing.”
The Village Council ultimately decided against the PUD rezoning, voting 2-2 with one member abstaining. At that time, Oberer still owned the 52 acres and had the right to build a development of mostly single-family homes. Now, the YSN has confirmed that Chappelle bought at least 19 of those acres, though his representatives declined to say exactly how big the purchase was or what he planned to do with it.
It’s unclear if Oberer intends to keep the rest of its acreage. A spokesperson for the company said it was “considering market options,” and Village Manager Josué Salmerón noted at a Yellow Springs Development Corporation meeting in April, “There is no indication currently that the [Oberer] project is moving forward.”

ATLANTA (AP) — Nearly $100,000 in cash was taken in a weekend burglary at the Atlanta home of former NBA player Vince Carter, according to an incident report released Wednesday by Atlanta Police.
Two guns and more than $16,000 was recovered later outside the 10,000-square-foot (900-square meter) home in Atlanta’s affluent Buckhead neighborhood. Carter told police the recovered money was a small portion of $100,000 in cash he kept in a bag in a closet, the report said.
According to the report, Carter’s wife, Sondi Carter, was in bed with her two sons when she heard loud noises around 11:50 p.m. Sunday. They hid in a closet and she called 911, then texted her neighborhood patrol. A neighborhood patrol officer, who was the first law enforcement to arrive, saw a man fleeing in a black SUV but was unable to catch him, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Neither Sondi Carter, nor her children, were hurt, but police said a front window on the main house had been smashed. Outside, officers found “a large amount of $100 bills spilled on the ground,” along with a gold Desert Eagle pistol and a black Glock 26 pistol with an extended magazine, the report said. The Desert Eagle belonged to Carter, but investigators believe the Glock was carried by the suspect, the incident report said.
While in the closet, Carter later told police, she could hear someone rummaging through different rooms upstairs. According to the report, multiple rooms were in disarray and a gate at the top of the stairs had been broken off its hinges.
Fulton County property records show the home, built in 2016, is owned by Vince Carter, who played 22 seasons in the NBA before retiring with the Hawks in 2020. Carter bought the home, which sits on nearly an acre and a half (.6 hectares) of land, for nearly $7 million in August 2020, property records show.
A real estate listing described the property as a “family compound” with “state of the art home security” that includes 16 closed-circuit security cameras. A fence also appears to encircle the home, including an electronic gate across the driveway.
Police have not publicly identified a suspect, but the incident report said a fingerprint from the suspect was collected from the scene.
Carter, who now works as an NBA analyst for ESPN, has not responded to requests for comment from the newspaper.

Lil Tjay still has a lot of bumps in his road to recovery after Wednesday’s shooting ... TMZ Hip Hop has learned.
The platinum-selling rapper still remains unconscious in the hospital ... according to sources close to the situation. We're told he's scheduled for a CAT Scan and outside of moving his legs yesterday, he's made no other bodily movements.
TMZ Hip Hop broke the story -- NJ police say Tjay was shot multiple times by a man named Mohamed Konate, who was arrested -- but also admitted to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.
Prosecutors say hospital video shows someone leaving Konate on the ground outside a hospital.
The 2 men who were with Tjay at the time of the shooting were later arrested for second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon -- while Konate has been charged with 3 counts of first-degree attempted murder.
Tjay was gearing up to release his "Strictly4MyFans" EP this summer led by his "Lavish" freestyle -- but now his primary goal has to be making a full recovery.

(AP) Amazon’s Alexa might soon replicate the voice of family members - even if they’re dead.
The capability, unveiled at Amazon’s Re:Mars conference in Las Vegas, is in development & would allow the virtual assistant to mimic the voice of a specific person based on a less than a minute of provided recording.
Rohit Prasad, senior vice president & head scientist for Alexa, said at the event Wednesday that the desire behind the feature was to build greater trust in the interactions users have with Alexa by putting more “human attributes of empathy & affect.”
“These attributes have become even more important during the ongoing pandemic when so many of us have lost ones that we love,” Prasad said. “While AI can’t eliminate that pain of loss, it can definitely make their memories last.”
In a video played by Amazon at the event, a young child asks “Alexa, can Grandma finish reading me the Wizard of Oz?” Alexa then acknowledges the request & switches to another voice mimicking the child’s grandmother. The voice assistant then continues to read the book in that same voice.
To create the feature, Prasad said the company had to learn how to make a “high-quality voice” with a shorter recording, opposed to hours of recording in a studio. Amazon did not provide further details about the feature, which is bound to spark more privacy concerns and ethical questions about consent.
Amazon’s push comes as competitor Microsoft earlier this week said it was scaling back its synthetic voice offerings and setting stricter guidelines to “ensure the active participation of the speaker” whose voice is recreated. Microsoft said Tuesday it is limiting which customers get to use the service -- while also continuing to highlight acceptable uses such as an interactive Bugs Bunny character at AT&T stores.
“This technology has exciting potential in education, accessibility & entertainment & yet it is also easy to imagine how it could be used to inappropriately impersonate speakers & deceive listeners,” said a blog post from Natasha Crampton, who heads Microsoft’s AI ethics division.
