A Q&A WITH ALAN GOLDSHER
Let’s be honest, here: A 19-song album is insane.
ALAN: In general, absolutely. But in this case, I don’t think so. Most of the tunes clock in around two minutes, kind of like a film soundtrack, thus the album’s title. And yeah, 19 five-minute tracks would’ve been a bit much.
Your previous albums are traditionally formatted: Ten-ish cuts, four-ish minutes per cut. What happened here?
ALAN: The music dictated the format. I was in a compositional space in which the melody or the groove was enough — no improvisation or elaboration necessary. It wasn’t by design; the songs told me what to do, and the songs, for the most part, said, “Two minutes is cool, dude.”
Is there a precedent for this, something that specifically pointed you in this direction?
ALAN: Two obscure entities and two others that’re more mainstream. Between the late 1960s and early 1990s, dozens of European composers dropped hundreds of albums that fell under the umbrella of “Library Music,” meaning these songs were kept in a metaphorical library for film and television producers looking for soundtrack songs. I’d liken this album, what with its stylistic diversity, its overriding sense of funk, and its quick cuts, to those projects. Then there’s composer and arranger David Axelrod, who was also fond of short, funky material. On the more common tip, the Ocean’s 11 soundtrack is another touchstone, as are the Beastie Boys’ instrumental recordings.
What are some of your favorite cuts on the album?
ALAN: I very much dig the opening track, “Bullish and Bearish.” It’s a bass and piano unison groove with a chill beat, and it sets the album’s mood perfectly. “Bo Knows” and “My Favorite Sports” are homages to the New Jack Swing era, and are super-fun. And “Alt Af” is a groove-shifting cut that’s, well, alt af.
Finally, who do you envision starring in the movie that adopts this soundtrack?
ALAN: Anne Hathaway, the entire Ted Lasso cast, Paul McCartney, and Idris Elba. That’s doable, right?

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles judge on Wednesday sentenced the man convicted of gunning down Nipsey Hussle to 60 years to life in prison.
Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke II handed down the sentence to Eric R. Holder Jr., 33, who was found guilty of the 2019 first-degree murder of the 33-year-old Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist outside the clothing store Hussle founded, the Marathon, in the South Los Angeles neighborhood where both men grew up.
After the monthlong trial, jurors in July also convicted Holder of 2 counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter & 2 counts of assault with a firearm for gunfire that hit 2 other men at the scene who survived.
Jacke sentenced Holder to 25 years to life for the murder, 25 more for a firearm sentencing enhancement & 10 for assault with a firearm. He set several other sentencing additions and ordered that others run concurrent. He also gave Holder credit for the nearly 4 years he has served since the shooting.
Hussle, whose legal name is Ermias Asghedom & Holder had known each other for years growing up as members of the Rollin’ 60s in South LA.
The evidence against Holder was so overwhelming — from eyewitnesses to surveillance cameras from local businesses that captured his arrival, the shooting & his departure — that his attorney conceded during trial that he had shot Hussle.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Eli Hart's mother Julissa Thaler has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering her 6-year-old son on May 20, 2022.
Thaler was sentenced Thursday, Feb. 16, to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of first-degree murder. Before the judge handed down her sentence, she said she was innocent, used an expletive & called everyone "garbage."
Authorities said Thaler, 29, of Spring Park, shot Eli up to 9 times with a shotgun in her vehicle & then hid his body in the trunk. Orono Police pulled Thaler over on May 20, 2022, after she was spotted driving on the rim of her car & had a window smashed out. Officers drove Thaler home & discovered Eli's body in the trunk. She was then arrested.
Meanwhile, Eli Hart's father, Tory Hart, filed a wrongful death lawsuit earlier this year related to his son's killing, seeking more than $75,000 in damages. The lawsuit says Dakota County Social Services provided services to Eli, with Tory Hart claiming the county & its employees were negligent. Dakota County & 2 Dakota County employees, Sherri Larson & Beth Dehner, were named in the lawsuit.
Tory Hart had been fighting for custody of his son prior to his death. Tory Hart's now-wife, Josie Josephson, told FOX 9 the boy's mother struggled with drug addiction & mental health issues & despite their repeated calls for help, his biological mom was awarded full custody of Eli before his death.

Muslim activist Raquel Evita Saraswati, who claimed to be a woman of color, was outed by her mom.
Saraswati, 39, is the chief equity, inclusion & culture officer of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a Quaker organization that fights globally for peace & social justice.
Members say Saraswati, birth name Rachel Elizabeth Seidel, has been misrepresenting her ethnic background for years. The activist claimed to be of Latino, South Asian & Arab descent.
“I call her Rachel,” her mom, Carol Perone, said. “I don’t know why she’s doing what she’s doing. I’m as white as the driven snow & so is she. I’m German & British & her father was Calabrese Italian. She’s chosen to live a lie & I find that very, very sad.”
Her daughter converted to Islam in high school & at some point started presenting herself as being of a different ethnic identity.
Oskar Pierre Castro, a human resources official who helped AFSC hire Saraswati, said the activist presented herself as a “queer, Muslim, multiethnic woman.”
“In my mind it was, “Great, a person of color, a queer person of color, who happens to be a Muslim, it’s a woman,” all these things, and someone who seemed to get it. I definitely feel conned. I feel deceived.”
Some AFSC members believe the activist may have a hidden political agenda & is seeking to undermine the group. Claiming that after 9/11, Saraswati appeared on right-wing TV shows, where she was described as a “moderate” Muslim critical of Islamic extremism.
"I assure people that as soon as I am capable, I will provide answers to the recent discussion & attack on me," Saraswati wrote on Facebook. "I understand all the reactions you’re having. I am currently taking the time to get to where I can answer in a way that is most helpful and thorough."

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (ClickOrlando) – An 85-year-old woman was attacked and killed Monday by a gator in a Florida retirement community.
St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office deputies & Florida Fish & Wildlife officials responded to the call about an alligator bite incident.
Neighbors said the woman, Gloria Serge, was walking her dog when she was dragged into the water by an alligator at the Spanish Lakes Fairways 55 & older community.
One resident, 77-year-old Carol, said it was just past 12 p.m. when it happened.
“I heard kind of like a commotion,” she said. “I looked out & I saw the dog & I saw…my neighbor.”
Carol first called 911 & ran, trying & hoping she could help.
“I just remember her coming up & pushing her hair out of her face & I’m saying, ‘Swim toward the paddle boat’ & she said, ‘I can’t, the gator has me.’
“I got my longest Shepherd’s hook to try to hook her or hit him or do something,” Carol continued. “Hit him on the nose or something. I couldn’t do anything, which haunts me right now.”
The victim was recovered & a contracted nuisance alligator trapper captured the 10-foot-long alligator involved in the incident.
Authorities said the victim’s dog survived & is in good condition. FWC said the woman was pulled into the water by the gator after it tried taking her dog.

Da Brat and her wife Jesseca "Judy" Harris-Dupart are expanding their household roster, announcing the iconic MC is carrying a child at the age of 48.
There's a first time for everything -- Brat was the first female rapper to go platinum with her 1994 debut album "Funkdafied" and now she's expecting her first child, telling People, "It's been quite a journey."
Brat and Judy made the big reveal Tuesday, introducing Brat's baby bump in a shoot with photographer Derek Blanks ... with a gangsta motif to play into Brat's rapper exterior.
Brat understands there are some possible risks with the pregnancy, adding, "there's a lot of stuff we learned about women over the age of 40."
Brat and Judy already share Judy's three children together -- and the rapper had to overcome a few hurdles -- an embryo transfer that required surgery to remove fibroids and polyps from her body.
