(Minneapolis Star Tribune) Prince died from an overdose of painkillers, a source with knowledge of the megastar’s death investigation has told the Star Tribune.
The 57-year-old musician was pronounced dead the morning of April 21, one day before he was scheduled to meet with a California doctor in an attempt to kick an opioid addiction.
Two of his staff members — longtime friend Kirk Johnson and personal assistant Meron Bekure — found his lifeless body in a Paisley Park elevator about 9:40 a.m.
While the official autopsy and toxicology results have yet to be publicly reported, sources have told the Star Tribune that the investigation has focused on Prince’s use of painkillers and how he obtained them.
The Associated Press in Chicago, citing an unidentified law enforcement official, also reported Thursday that Prince died from an opioid overdose.
The day before his death, Prince was treated by a local doctor for withdrawal symptoms from opioid addiction. The physician, Dr. Michael Todd Schulenberg, a family practitioner, treated Prince for fatigue, anemia and concerns about opiate withdrawal.
Schulenberg, however, did not prescribe opioids to Prince, a source has said.
Prince died less than a week after his private plane made an emergency, middle-of-the-night landing in Moline, Ill. so he could be treated for a suspected opioid overdose following a pair of concert performances in Atlanta, sources told the Star Tribune.
Emergency responders arrived at the Chanhassen complex the morning of April 21 within five minutes of receiving a 911 call, but it was already too late. A responding paramedic told staff members, law enforcement officers and others at the scene that Prince appeared to have been dead for at least six hours by the time his body was found.
Sources have told the Star Tribune that Prince’s inner circle became so concerned about his health that they reached out to Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, a well-known environmental and labor activist in the San Francisco Bay Area who has been credited with helping Prince recover the rights to his early catalog of songs from Warner Bros. She has declined to comment, citing Prince’s concern for his privacy.
The night of April 20, less than 12 hours before Prince’s body was found, Ellis-Lamkins called Dr. Howard Kornfeld, a pain and addiction specialist in Mill Valley, Calif., seeking his help to get the musician off prescription painkillers, sources said.
Kornfeld could not clear his schedule to immediately travel to Minnesota, so he instead dispatched his son, Andrew Kornfeld, a pre-med student who worked with his father, to meet with Prince and a second Minnesota doctor who is certified to prescribe an opioid addiction treatment medication that Dr. Kornfeld uses.
That Minnesota doctor, who hasn’t been publicly identified, had cleared his calendar for the morning of April 21 so that Prince could go to his office for an independent evaluation, the source said.
Prince, however, died before the meeting could take place.

Scott Leemon, the lawyer defending Troy Ave against charges brought against him stemming from a shooting that took place May 25 at a T.I. concert in New York City, is frustrated with the way the NYPD is handling his client's case.
"What troubles me most is the misinformation that's being sent out. NYPD knows Troy didn't shoot himself. They know Troy didn't shoot his bodyguard. That man died a hero. And to imply anything that Troy actually hurt his life long friend is absolutely insane and irresponsible," Leemon told Fox 5 New York's Lisa Evers on Wednesday, June 1.
Leemon insisted that scientific evidence will prove Troy's innocence and asked for public assistance in helping to free the BSB Records CEO.
"What we're doing tonight is we're gonna ask anyone who was there ... and anyone who has any information or anyone who was there ... and if anyone knows anyone that was in that VIP room we have set up a special email address," Leemon said. "Because we know some people have trouble working and talking to NYPD. Help us, help me defend Troy."
The attorney goes on to give out an email address for witnesses to write him with information regarding the case.
When asked what assurances he could offer tipsters that they would remain anonymous, Leemon didn't make any guarantees.
"I really can't promise anything. All I'm doing is I'm asking for help," he explained. "We have a man here who is being accused of killing his best friend. He didn't do it and I need help to defend him."

Wiz Khalifa is taking the label that has been his recording home since 2005 to court in an attempt to free himself from a contract that he feels has taken advantage of him.
Billboard reports that the lawsuit filed Tuesday, May 31, in Los Angeles Superior Court accuses Rostrum Records and Wiz's former manager Benjy Grinberg of profiting from "virtually every aspect of plaintiff's professional life" for more than a decade, and entered a "series of other transactions, all in further violation of the rule against self dealing."
Wiz's relationship with Grinberg and Rostrum began in 2004 when he was 16. He entered into a verbal agreement that allowed them to manage his career.
In 2005 the Taylor Gang boss signed a 360 deal with the label that called for one album and five options for additional albums. The rapper says his 2016 album titled "Khalifa" fulfilled his obligation to the label.
The lawsuit alleges that Rostrum and Grinberg made significant profits with each release and along the way cut deals with Warner Bros. Records and Atlantic Records for his recordings while "intentionally conceal[ing] material information... in order to profit at his expense."
Wiz terminated his management agreement with them in 2014, and now wants a judge to void his contract with the label.
He's asking for more than $1 million in damages, as well as attorneys' fees and further punitive damages.
"To witness an artist turn on you after supporting them for a number of years is very disheartening," Grinberg told Billboard. "This is an egregious lawsuit filled with inaccuracies, yet unfortunately people sometimes resort to these practices as a way of conducting business.”

Bullets from a gun found in a hidden compartment of the vehicle that transported 33-year old rapper Troy Ave to the hospital following the May 25th shooting at T.I.'s New York City concert at Irving Plaza, match the one that killed his longtime friend and bodyguard Ronald McPhatter, according to DNA Info New York.
McPhatter, 30, aka BSB Banga, died from a gunshot wound to the stomach.
As we previously reported, NYPD Detectives now believe that during a fight backstage at the venue a rival fired the shots that killed McPhatter and wounded Troy in the leg.
During the brawl there was a tussle over the weapon. Troy is seen on surveillance footage bleeding from the leg and firing a shot at an unknown individual, who was out of view of the camera.
A second gunman is being sought by police.
Ronald's brother, anti-gang activist Shanduke McPhatter, told Pix 11 that it was common knowledge that the person Troy fought with that night had prior beef with the BSB Records CEO.
Shanduke McPhatter
"I was aware of the ongoing beef that was happening with Troy and the other individual," Shanduke said. "I would not have let those 2 gentlemen in that club."
Maggie Carrie Heckstall plans to sue over injuries she sustained during T.I.'s concert at Irving Plaza
Two others were wounded during the shooting.
26-year old model, Maggie Carrie Heckstall, was shot in the knee. She has hired The Blanch Law Firm of Manhattan in preparation for a lawsuit.
“We expect to be filing a claim against all responsible parties," the firm said in a statement.
Christopher Vinson, 34, was shot in the chest, but is expected to recover.
Troy Ave is being held without bond until his trial after pleading not guilty to charges of attempted murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, during a court appearance on Monday, May 30th.

Back in February we reported that Tomi Lahren, a conservative host of The Blaze, was up in arms over Beyonce's Super Bowl 50 halftime performance. Lahren was upset that Bey saluted the Black Panther Party.
She criticized the singer and took a shot at her husband, Jay Z, for allegedly being a former narcotics dealer.
“Beyonce, really? What is the political message here? What is it they are trying to convey here? A salute to what? A group that used violence and intimidation to advance, not racial equality but an overthrow of white domination,” Lahren said at the time. “Your husband was a drug dealer. For 14 years he sold crack cocaine. Talk about protecting black neighborhoods – start at home, right?”
In Pusha T's just released single featuring Hov titled "Drug Dealers Anonymous" the two rappers give Lahren a light jab by using a small sound bite from her rant in the song, which is all about moving product.
It didn't take long for Lahren to respond via her Twitter account on Tuesday night, May 31.
"Always wanted to be on a track with two drug dealers. Thanks @PUSHA_T & #JayZ #DrugDealersAnonymous," she wrote.
