LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville ride-share driver said he was just trying to drop off passengers. But around 12:55 a.m. Wednesday, at the intersection of South Preston street and East Oak streets, someone opened fire on his car.

The driver was Patrick Hemmerle, a Louisville real estate agent, drives for Uber and Lyft to make extra money.

"This car just came by and started unloading on us for no apparent reason," Hemmerle said.

He said he's not sure why he was targeted, but his cameras were rolling inside the car, something he said is recommended for Uber and Lyft drivers.

"You can see it in the video," Hemmerle said. "It bounces across my face and lands in my passenger floorboard."

He describes the car as a late model black Ford Fusion with silver and chrome wheels. Hemmerle posted the video on Facebook, where it's been shared hundreds of times.

Earlier this week, Louisville surpassed last year's total number of homicides, more than 90, with four months left in the year. The Louisville Metro Police Department also reports a sharp rise in carjackings. Data shows 58 carjackings between June 1 and Aug. 4 in Louisville. The department recorded only 14 in the same period last year.

"It's obviously not acceptable about what's going on," Mayor Greg Fischer said during a news conference Wednesday. "We're seeing more and more young people involved with these carjackings, so it's of great concern and something LMPD is focused on."

An LMPD spokesperson said they are aware of the shooting, but Hemmerle said he wants to see more action by police.

"The cops told me a detective would call me next week on it, and these guys are just riding around shooting random people," he said. "They need to be caught."

Standing in front of a mural honoring Spc. Vanessa Guillén at Houston’s Taqueria Del Sol on Wednesday, Trae Tha Truth gathered with family members of the slain Fort Hood soldier in the neighborhood where she grew up.

The Houston rapper, whose given name is Frazier Thompson III, presented Vanessa Guillén’s sisters, Mayra and Lupe Guillén, with a $30,000 check to help with expenses.

“It means a lot anytime you’re able to take the stress off somebody, even for a moment, knowing that they'll be going through this for a lifetime,” said the Houston rapper, “ I wanted to let them know they’re not by themselves.”

Vanessa Guillén's older sister, Mayra Guillén, said Thompson’s support has been unwavering since her sister's death. “Trae has been there for me and it means a lot.”

Lupe Guillén, Vanessa Guillén's younger sister, said she is grateful not only to Thompson but also to the countless people from around the globe who have reached out.

“We all have to stand together as a family," said Lupe Guillén. "It doesn’t matter if you’re blood. We're all brothers and sisters."

Thompson echoed Lupe Guillén’s remarks.

“No matter your race or anything else, we're in this together,” he said. ”We need to keep saying her name: Vanessa Guillén. We need to keep saying George Floyd and Breonna Taylor's names. This is going to be a long fight but we need to stand for what’s right.”

Vanessa Guillén, who originally disappeared April 22, was killed in a brutal attack before her body was dismembered and buried in a shallow grave near Fort Hood in late June.

The Army’s handling of its investigation on Vanessa Guillen’s death has been criticized by activists, lawmakers and civil rights groups. It's also led to a call for the reform of how to report sexual abuse and harassment in the military.

Vanessa Guillen’s killer shot and killed himself on July 1 as law enforcement tried confronting him, officials said.

Cecily Aguilar, charged with helping dispose of the body of murder victim Vanessa Guillén, is awaiting trial.

Lupe Guillén said a public memorial service for Vanessa Guillén will take place this Friday from noon to 8 p.m. at Houston's César Chávez High School, where Spc. Guillén attended.

A private funeral is scheduled for Saturday at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home.

“Everyone is welcome to attend on Friday. Face masks and social distancing will be required,” said Lupe Guillén. “We're asking for privacy on Saturday. It will just be for our family and close friends."

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A registered sex offender and a former sergeant with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office were among 16 people arrested in a sting targeting child predators in Hillsborough County.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister held a press conference Wednesday morning to share more details from “Operation Small Talk,” an undecover sting.

“The conversations, text messages and photos from these predators are so graphic, I can’t even begin to describe them, other than to say they are repulsive,” Chronister said.

Chronister said some of the men showed up to meet the teens with products they had purchased to use for sex.

Among those arrested was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, Melvin Rosa Viera, and former Manatee County Sheriff’s Office sergeant, Stephen Utter.

Deputies also arrested a registered sex offender, Michael Daughtry, and Matthew Jones, who was charged with 51 counts of possession of child pornography.

NEW YORK (AP) — Federal prosecutors announced charges Wednesday against three men accused of threatening and intimidating women who have accused R&B singer R. Kelly of abuse, including one man suspected of setting fire to a vehicle in Florida.

A longtime friend of the indicted singer offered to pay a victim $500,000 to keep her from cooperating in Kelly’s prosecution, authorities said, while a manager and adviser of Kelly threatened to release sexually explicit photographs of a woman who sued Kelly.

A Kelly defense attorney said he had “no involvement whatsoever” in any attempt to silence witnesses.

“He hasn’t attempted to intimidate anyone, or encouraged anyone else to do so,” attorney Steve Greenberg said on Twitter.

The Grammy-award winning musician has pleaded not guilty to dozens of state and federal sexual misconduct charges in Illinois, Minnesota and New York.

The charges range from sexual assault to heading a racketeering scheme aimed at supplying Kelly with girls. Kelly also is accused of having unprotected sex with a minor in 2015 without disclosing he had herpes.

Prosecutors described a third man accused of intimidating witnesses as being related to a former Kelly publicist. They said Michael Williams, 37, of Valdosta, Georgia, traveled to Florida in June and set fire to an SUV parked outside a residence where one of Kelly’s victims was staying.

Williams also conducted Internet searches for “the detonation properties of fertilizer and diesel fuel, witness intimidation and witness tampering and countries that do not have extradition with the United States,” authorities said in a news release.

A message was sent to Williams’ attorney seeking comment.

“The men charged today allegedly have shown that there is no line they will not cross to help Kelly avoid the consequences of his alleged crimes — even if it means re-victimizing his accusers,” Peter Fitzhugh, special agent in charge of the Homeland Security Investigations in New York, said in a statement.

Also charged were two Illinois men with ties to Kelly. His longtime friend, Richard Arline Jr., 31, is accused of offering to pay off a woman he believed had “too much” incriminating information against Kelly.
